Note to all :

1/ Please don't forget to change the Subject field to the subject of your message

2/ I am truly amazed at the ease of running a digest on a 5MX <BG>. I suggest we will let it run for a month or so and if by than the up5digest has not returned, I'll post a message here opening the debate on how to proceed for the future.

Enjoy,   Itamar

Subject: Phoneman Pro - an appreciation.

I had a problem in that my phone -Motorola T 250 - kept on sending the same old message. I thought this must be a fault with Phoneman Pro as I had just started using it.

However it turned out to be a fault with the phone, and Motorola have upgraded the phone's software - surely they mean firmware?- and it works OK.

I have made much use of Phoneman Pro on my Psion 5mx to manage my phone, and now have all my numbers stored in order of alphabet and phone location, have survived Motorola wiping the phone's memory, and have my text message correspondents specially flagged.

Motorola's helpdesk said that there was no way to clear the simm card memory all at once - you have to delete entries one by one. Do not despair - you can avoid doing this by clearing the sim entries stored in Phoneman Pro and copying the null entries onto your phone's sim card. Brilliant!

Using the Psion keyboard for text messaging is so much easier than a phone key pad.

I have yet to manage my contacts, but I am sure I will get there some how...

Perhaps Zenobyte and other developers will publicise the new digest, it has to be in their interest to do so.

Hell, I'm glad I never bought one!  Who has the time to

mess about like that every time the damn thing needs a recharge?  I can imagine all these people getting up and

having breakfast, but being late for work as they are

waiting for the charging current to drop to 7ma...  :)

The new digest seems to work just fine, but I think it's

a fairly extreme way to get rid

The 5mx seems to be more sensitive to removal of the CF card than the old Series 5 was.

I have started removing my CF card regularly too, since I finally gave up on PsiWin for backups.  I have found that if I shut down all running programs and switch off the machine while the CF is removed, then I don't get this problem any more.

Once or twice I have removed the CF without shutting down everything and without getting the error message - but making sure that there are no programs or files open on the D drive, and also switching off the machine while the CF is out.

To make this easier, I use Startup (Freeware by Philipp Salvisberg at

http://salvis.com/) to shut down whatever's running and start up my usual 11 applications.  Other people prefer JBStopGo.  I started using Flashback (16GBP shareware by Peter Csutora from http://www.pocketiq.com/) from PocketIQ to back up to CF and a CF reader to copy the CF disk to the

PC.  One of the things that originally appealed to me about Flashback was that if you leave it running in the background it can prompt you at user-defined intervals to do backups.  Ironically, I've ended up not using this feature.

Both applications allow you to create multiple configuration / batch files that you can just tap on to start up / shut down / back up whatever files you want to, so I keep a small selection of these on my C disk for various scenarios.

Subject: NETBOOK ROM

Hi Guys,

For Trygve re netBook ROM Build 158:

Have you also found that you cannot enable TLS and SSL in Opera Trgve? There have also been reports of IR issues, although I never got around to confirming these before reinstalling Build 156. I can confirm your impresssion of an apparent better performance from the battery. I get six hours in normal use with a brightness setting of 4, but it seemed that I would have exceeded that if I'd stayed with 158.

Other issues that I can mention:

- Original Build 154 Welcome to netBook file - still gives Psion Enterprise contact details!

- Original Build 154 Help file - still mentions Web in great detail!

- City codes for France in World/Time still incorrect! This app wouldn't read my 156 WLD_DATA.DBW file. Didn't check the UK codes.

- Still no Import Text File option in Sheet.

- Same tired old clip-art in Sketch.

- Same bug in Jotter that won't allow creation date for an entry.

- Couldn't install Web from the CD, so you would be stuck with a disfunctional Opera as your only browser.

- Once again, no change history provided.

Seems like a shoestring budget upgrade. Don't know what the beta-testers were doing for the last six months.

Peter

Subject: Revo battery problem

Firstly thank you for the trouble you take in putting this digest together.

Stavros' posting would interest Dennis who charges his Revo very differently indeed.

Here is my own experience:

I have had a Revo Plus for almost one year (10 June 01) [after two 3a and one 5mx] and my battery is in good shape.  I charge the Revo switched off all night when the level reaches around 50%.  But if necessary, I put it on and use it occasionally when charging, even if the red light is on.

In the morning after one night charge, the battery level is always 100%

This is not at all what is advised in Stavros' posting but it seems to work fine for me.

Subject: Removing CFs

Hi folks,

Nice to be receiving Digests again; thanks, Itamar.

To Christopher Marwood:

Chris, I had a problem with changing CF disks in the past, and the problem in my case was a folder D:\System\recogs. The solution was to transfer the contents of this folder to  C:\System\recogs, and to delete the folder in D. Maybe this may help?

I think I know this one....

I'm betting that you have one or more OPX files or something on the D: disk, and these are in use....

Copy the files over to C:, reset the machine, then delete them from D:

This should clear it up...

(May be other files too... )

In the last digest I wrote this about ROM 158 for the netBook:

The problem persists!

The clock is absolutely FUBAR, and seems to affect even Chadis7, so I can't even trust the 'time since last recharge' there....

This is aboslutely the shittiest piece of software Psion has ever launched!

56 would be on its way back on board...)

------

Psion pulling out of the modem business...

Well, I can understand them.

At the office we buy between 10 and 20 laptops every year, and the last two years ALL of them have come with a built-in modem.

(Which we don't use. Instead we stuff in a Nokia CardPhone II to give them mobile access)

For desktops that needs to dial in to the office RAS pool, we've ditched ordinary modems, and gone straight for ISDN routers.

(No crappy dialup dialogs, just the ordinary NT Network login, so that the users gets the same experience as in the office)

For once, Psion is actually looking ahead and pulling out of a market that's about to collapse.

Subject: RE: EPOC DIGEST -- just when I needed help!

Hi,

Thanks for the temporary solution. It comes just when I was getting desperate!

My PC has unexpectedly stopped recognizing the Psion when I have the two connected. So far I have:

1. Removed all the programs that I installed since the last time that the connection worked (and run Norton to clean out their remains)

2. Installed the updated PsiWin, removed it and reinstalled the earlier one

3. Checked the Com 1 box on the PsiWin properties form

4. Checked the Psion both for the Baud rate and that the link

is on "cable"

The PC is running Windows 98 and I am connecting with the Psion series cable that came with the PsiWin.

I need additional suggestions. Is there anyone who has had this problem and solved it?

Thanks,

Suzanne

Subject: Re: Email woes

Hi Christopher,

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but there are a couple of things you could try:

i) I occassionally get an email that won't download. It stops while downloading the header and jams the other emails. Usually I can clear this by logging on via a different ISP (with my S5) and it seems to download OK this way. Don't ask me why !

ii) It could be that message suite has become corrupted somehow. In the past I have re-installed Message Suite over the top of the existing installation (ie. don't uninstall first) and this way all my inbox messages are preserved.

Not sure if these will help, but worth a try.

Jason

Subject: Re:EPOC DIGEST

Hi Itamar and all digestives,

I've been in the U.S. and missed all the excitement !

I could only get low-speed data access, and at £1.10 a minute couldn't justify the cost. It took over 30 minutes to download all my emails over a 56k connection on my return. At 9.6k this would've been 3hrs assuming the connection never fell over (highly likely) which works out at about £200 !

Anyway, getting back on topic. A huge thank you is due to Itamar for devotion to the digest, without your commitment it would probably have disappeared long ago.

I've had a couple of thoughts about the digests future, and I guess it is looking less likely that it will resurface in its previous form.

It may be useful to break the link between the service provider and the email address, allowing us to change provider in future without changing the email address. As some of you will know I use a bigfoot address which redirects my email to any ISP (or ISPs) of my choosing. I believe Itamar uses a similar service (mail.com or post.com ?). I'd be happy to investigate these options.

There must be options out there to provide a similar service. Yahoo groups is the only one I've personally experienced and I do get a few viruses (not sure if they are connected, but timing suggests they may be). As time goes on, fewer and fewer services are available freely on the net, and we may need to find a way of paying for the service.

Alternatively, we could run it ourselves, as Itamar is currently doing. But using a bigfoot/mail etc. address would allow us to rotate administration between a number of volunteers, making it less onerous and covering holidays etc.

Any thoughts ?

Regards,

Jason
