Subject: NETBOOK ROM

Hi Guys,

For Eamonn re netBook ROM:

Before resorting to the drastic step of e-mailling you Build 156 (it's about 6 Meg zipped) let's address your comment that you couldn't restore your data - its the first time I've heard someone mention this problem.

Did you try to restore via Psiwin or via CF? I restored from CF so that I could have more control over the restore process. You have to be careful when restoring the System folder because Build 158 has already created some updated files when the ROM is installed. If you just try to restore your backed-up System folder you will get a "Disk Corrupt" message (the Disk isn't really corrupt - no need to change underwear). Is this what's happening? If so, my suggestion is to go through the 158 System sub-folders one at a time and to only restore files that were not created when the ROM loaded, for example third party apps. Also don't forget to comply with the instructions in the Read Me file that comes with the os in respect of your Commsdb.DAT file. (See Trygve's posting on this to #8.)

For Marc Jeitz re German ROM:

Good grief! And I thought that the UK version was bad. By comparison it's a masterpiece.

Subject: 5mx back into production / Francois Boller cannot read his mail

Hi group,

On the 5mx rumour: as far as I see it, it will be the original black- and-white 5mx, because the demand is for that machine. While

modern consumers want colour screens, businesses want

machines which last longer and which can operate on just two penlites, hence the 5mx.

The Netpad is therefore a bit of a weird thing. It is a colour 5mx without a keyboard. I still think that a colour 5mx *with* a keyboard would also be great!

I did also hear that the screencable on the most recent 5mx's is far better than that on the first batches, so that is kind of taken care of. You do have to take in mind, that the clamshell design itself introduces a weak point. Even my laptop (which I am using now)

has a failing screen and a big, visible crack on its hinges.

If you read Dutch, then regularly check www.symbian.info, because

it seems to have a direct link with Symbian. It will be translated in French and English as well, so I have been told.

Itamar, someone did mention on symbian.info that the research of

the Germans, which indicated that 36% of the responders wanted a

5mx could have been biased, because (nearly) only Psioneers did

fill in the form... I don't know, but it has to be taken into account.

As for Francois Boller's problem with not being able to read his e- mail in foreign countries: caller ID for roaming mobile phones is usually disabled and ISP's sometimes do not like this. Having said

this: I never had problems with checking my French Freesurf

account in France with my Dutch mobile phone. Nevertheless: your

ISP could make problems because of it.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden

Subject: Siemens phone?

Firstly a big THANK YOU to Itamar and the others who pointed me to the new Digest.

I'm ready to buy a new mobile phone - my service doesn't offer many tri-band models (I live in California but travel to the UK and plan to move back soon). One option is the Siemens S70 (tri-band) --- anyone have any comments on this? Another option is the Ericcson T61z , though I don't think it's tri-band.

Hi all,

recently I have bought another Psion S5mx Pro and with it came the PsiWin v2.3. Unfortunately the cover nor the CD show the exact version, meaning the third digit like v2.3.3. Would anyone know which version this is? The CD includes Opera WEB Browser, WAP Browser, SMS Configurator Easy Setup. Copyright PSION GmbH 2000. Designed for MS WinNT and MS98. Is this CD the version 2.3.3???

Would anyone of you also have any idea how well the newest v2.3.3  works with Windows XP and Office XP? Any major problems or something I should be aware of?

Many thanks and special acknowledgement to Itamar for his endeavor to make this digest work.

Subject: EPOC Email Woes..

"A while back I posted about my Email woes. An increasing number of messages are coming into 5mx Email showing no sender, no subject, somtimes even no date. The effect of these varies - sometimes it renders the mailbox inaccessible until the offending message is removed by other means, sometimes the message just can't be downloaded - highlighting and trying to move it gives a message "No message highlighted". Todd Andrews from the Digest list kindly volunteered to help but we have not reached

any conclusions yet. Has anyone else seen anything similar? Sending a message to myself from the Popcorn mail reader always seems to produce this effect - can anyone else confirm that (Are you there, Sergio?)?"

Sounds like the problem I am having with a MDeamon server. The problem is even there when you telnet into the mail server and send a mail using the manual commands.

The only thing I can offer is that the headers of the message are being corrupted somehow which is causing the message formatting to be lost. You could try sending a mail from another email client - try from an online account using a web browser - or you could try using another email provider altogether

Good luck!

Michael

Hello Kit, I too like my Extras bar icons to be in the places with which I am familiar, and find having to go through this restoration is the single biggest chore in the wake of a hard reset.  Accordingly, I for one would be delighted if you could find somewhere to  upload your macro...

Re. Extrabar Macro - That soundes great. I don't know where you can upload it to, but surely would like to receive a copy <G>.

Answer to : Fernando

Re. Books - I suggest you download from the Palmtop Magazine the index in DATA format and check what interests you, than try and obtain only those issues you need for these subjects. The magazine is a good source for information (I am just as amazed how easy it is to manage the digest on the 5MX). A to software, start with the website of Tucows and look at their EPOC site, a wealth of programs sorted on subjects.

Bye for now,

I've enjoyed lurking for over a year on the old digest, and was sorry to see it disappear.  I have a classic 5 (will have to go to POS as it won't fore up at all (even from mains), and a 5mx which is great (but the backup battery is not recognized - so that 1)I don't use it as much as I should ((I get a month's use out of a pair of AA's))and  I backup more often {probably a good idea anyway}.  SO I'm glad there is still a forumn - and I appreciate the effort it must take.

<Currently Toshiba 2GB PCMCIA HDD are really cheap (£80). I tested one in my series 7 but couldn't get it to register as drive E at all. Anyone have any explanation as it's not meant to require drivers. Does it require too much power from the motherboard? I am hoping to upgrade shortly to a Netbook - would this be able to handle this memory device? Or is the microdrive the only large scale memory option Psion has?>

The Microdrive will not work in the E drive on the S7 because this machine cannot supply enough current for it to operate - it will however work in a netBook's E drive as it can give the higher required power output.

<1) I think you all US-DIGESTERS are GREAT, and i have not seen any other

users so helpfull and active as you are. Added value to the machine.

Therefore, one of the reason i got one myself. I wanted to be in the

club!!!! Thanks Itamar for keeping the digest going!!!

I hope the rumour about the 5mx going back to production is true!

With the amount of happy users PSION has got, and the big amount of machines

still on sale from different sellers - going under 200 pounds new-, as long

as we have updated soft, i think we

can have PSION for same or even longer time than some other models in the

market that appear and desappear. We, the happy users, are not only loyal

but also the best (and free) publicity for potential buyers.>

I think the 5mx has now got to the point where it is really now an affordable option for many more new buyers who, like you, are discovering just what a great palmtop it really is.  When I bought mine 3 years ago it was retailing at nearly 500 pounds but now of course it can be had for almost a third of that original price.  For me, there is still no keyboarded machine that can come near to matching its overall funcionality.  It would be wonderful if it really did go back into production, even better if Psion would continue to support it and develop it still further.  For me anyway, it's crying out for a decent bright colour screen (look at the success of the 9210 Communicator) with a decent snap-on lithium ion battery giving at least a whole day's use and a permanent fix for the infamous screen cable problem, which after all is only really just a (rare for Psion) design weakness.  The 5mx-c perhaps?  Oh well, no harm in dreaming but sometimes I feel like making the damned thing myself :-)

<2) BOOKS: I am thinking to suscribe to the palmtop mag, but anyone has any

books about the 5mX, which are worthy to have? (If you want to get rid of of

some old palmtop mags send me an email, pls)>

I would definitely say it's worth subscribing to Palmtop Mag as it will keep you up to date with what's happening in the Psion world.  Of course, this digest does that for free but sometimes you just can't beat curling up with a good magazine!

<3) Extra toys: Next, I am going to need an Irda PRINTER. I will get it color

to be able to use it on PC, too. Please, advised me the best option.>

I've used a Canon BJ-85 which is very compact, has Irda built-in and works well with a Psion.  It's a good hassle and cable free option.

<COMPACT FLASH, is there a limit on the size that the 5mX will recognize???

Any CF to avoid?>

I use a 256Mb Simple Technology card (110 UKP) with no trouble at all.  I also use a S7 which uses a 340Mb Microdrive (and can handle a 1Gb Microdrive too), so obviously EPOC can support storage of this size.  However, Psion themselves would only ever support their own branded cards up to 20Mb.

<Modem: at the moment... i see it too complicated for me. So i will stick to

the PC for internet. I am amazed how well Itamar is managing the digest from

the 5mX!!>

This just shows how versatile the 5mx (and Itamer of course!) really is :-)

To Itamar, Marcus, and Phil

Thanks for your generous advice on disabling the alarm and to you, Itamar, also for the Web pages for Hebread. It has all been very helpful.

I am wondering  now, though, which of these two programs you have mentioned , AlarmPlus and PsiLoc+, is a better program. Or maybe they do different things? If you heve nothing better to do with your time (or even if you do...), it would be nice to heve your recommendations on one or the other (or both)?

Subject: Advertising the Epoc Digest

With the kind help of Nicole we have now exhausted our sources for email addresses, that were kindly passed on to me by several of you from old digests. All addresses received an email and we no stand at 276 subscribers. Now has come the time for all of us to try and increase the membership numbers. How can each of us help ?

1/ if you know people that might be interested or showed interest in the past, send them a copy of the digest

2/ if you have a website which is partially designated to Psion / Epoc, mention the digest on it

3/ Has anyone contact with the major existing websites like Revoworld and others ?

Lastly, would anyone have the knowledge / interest / time / possibillity to launch a simple one page website for this digest explaining in short what it is about, have an old digest as an example on the site and link it up to the major internet search machines ? I have no idea at all, would any money be involved in that ?

If you have any other ideas, just launch them.  We are just a bunch of EPOC enthousiast and there is no need for formal approval to help this digest establish itself.

I suppose that after a full month of absence it is getting rather unlikely that the ups5digest will reappear.

Bye for now,

Itamar
