Hi Guys,
For Andy Longdon re conversions:
The app you need to convert your Epoc docs to other formats on board your Epoc machine is nConvert Andy. It's an excellent app but not perfect (there are some problems with tab conversions from Word to RTF). You will find it at www.neuon.co.uk. There is also XConverter (?) but I've never tried it so can't comment on it.
For Marc Jeitz re nFTP:
The answer is no Marc, nFTP is not included with the UK version of build 158 of the netBook ROM. Don't know why.

You Might try Vega-Holsters: http://www.vega-holsters.com/home.asp,
working your way through Computers/Psion/5mx.

Rich,
I use Phoneman Pro from www.sgsoft.com. Great for managing your phonebook and communicating with your mobile via IrDa. Only thing it will not do for now is write into the extended phonebook of mobiles like the Nokia.

Dick,
Get hold of the old Psion Modem Card Adaptor that came out with the 3c. You plug the PCMCIA modem card into this adaptor that is powered by 4 AA alkalines. Then plug the adaptor's honda connector into the 5mx data slot. Should work. You will just have to tweak the modem setings on the 5mx.

Hi All
Andrew asked about file conversion. nConvert is the tool that you want from www.neuon.com I bought it some time ago and although it is rarely used it has become invaluable and totally trouble-free.
Rich asked about MC218 and 7110. The MC218 was biased to work with Ericsson mobiles so it would be worth installing Phoneman Pro and seeing if that solves your problems.
John asked about Covertec cases. Is the Covertec site still up and running at www.covertec.com I seem to remeber looking there but it must be about 3 years ago now when I had one of the cases.

Reply to<address truncated>Cards with Street/Route Planner
Both products work from CF card, I have been doing so for many years, on a 5mx & Netbook.
You must re-load the application, whenever you transfer the CF card between different Psions, YOU DO NOT NEED TO RELOAD THE MAPS.
Maps can be spread over drive C & D, even drive E on the Netbook.

Re. Nokia 7110 - You will not succeed to make direct contact. I think the program Phoneman is the best to use for this. I use a 7110 with my 5MX and Phoneman too.
Answer to: Keith, Rafe & others
Re. Website - Have a look at www.psioneering.co.uk/digest.html, the website is up. However, Francis has not got the fund to make the connection with the search machines (Yahoo, Altavista and others). If anyone would like to help him either with the website or financially, I suggest you contact him off the digest at "Francis Creese" <address truncated>.
Answer to: Vlad
Re. Streetplanner - When installed the program reads the serial number of the Psion and indeed you cannot move the CF from one Psion to the other without reinstalling the program from the CD again. As to the garbage, looks like one of the files is corrupt. I suggest you completely remove it from your Psion and reinstall again.
Answer to: Mike McConnell
Re. BCC continued - Thanks for informing us of the bug. However, I still don't understand why it does happen when sending from the Psion via Demon Internet and Freeserve, but does not happen when using Compuserve (last 3 digests were sent from Psion via Compuserve, no BCC showing ...).
Answer to: Lord John
Re. Belt case - No, I don't know, but if you find one let me know, I am also looking for one for a business relation.
Answer to: Andrew Longdon
Re. Conversions on Psion - Yes there is. Look at nConvert from Neuon at www.neuon.com. I use it a lot. You convert a WORD file to a RTF file which almost any word processor can import. It also converts excel and other types of files.

First, do a backup. The following should not delete any data, but all I can say is that all 3 mechanisms work on a 5mx. I've never tried it on a Revo/Mako.
See below for what I sent to the UPS Digest on the 20 November 2000. Simpler alternatives would be
1) install Macro5 and get it to reconfigure the keyboard.
2) If the mako configuration has got messed up, then just delete the
c:\System\Apps\Shell\Shell.ini file and then press CTRL-SHIFT-Fn-K to KILL the shell application. When it restarts it will make a new Shell.ini file
3) If neither worked, then keep reading. Be brave!
All the best,

Subject: Keyboard Layout
Hi Owen,
First of all, I must say how much I enjoy reading about your travels - especially when I'm having a bad day!
I've tried the following and it worked for me on my 5MX:
1) First of all, you need a good hexeditor - try Hexeditor at
http://www.neuon.com/apps/hexeditor/. It's 'registerable freeware'.
2) The next step is to follow these instructions. These were sent in to this digest some time ago and relate to the 5 - they will need some very obvious tweaking (for silkscreen numbering) for the 5MX or Ericison. I'm afraid I don't know who the original author was, but they work!
Silkscreen Management
Here are some instructions for redefining the Silkscreen icons (the buttons at
the bottom of the display) on a Psion Series 5, without the need for an external mapping program.
The operating system--or, more precisely, the shell which is responsible for starting the different applications---considers the silkscreen as a part of the extras bars. The positions are numbered, starting from 0 (the System icon), through 1 (Word icon) to 7 (the Sketch icon). Number 8 is the position
above the word icon, number 15 the position above the Extras icon, and so on.
The layout of the Extra bars is stored in the file
"c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini". This file also contains the definitions for
the silkscreen icons, but while the layout of the rest of the extras bars can
be changed in the control panel, the meaning of the silkscreen icons cannot be changed so easily. Here are instructions for doing it by hand, using a hex editor.
Let's assume you want to start the web browser whenever you press the Sheet icon on the silkscreen. First use the control panel to select a fixed position
for the web browser on your Extras bar. Row one above the sheet icon would be
a good choice.
Now start a hex editor on "c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini", and look for the strings "Sheet" and "Web". In front of the string there is a single byte that
indicates the length of the string. The four bytes in front of that are the unique id of the applications. In front of that, there are three zero bytes, and
then there is a byte that contains the position of the application on the extras
bar. In our case, you should see the byte 02 in front of Sheet (if you counted, it should
be the ninth byte counting backwards from the "S" of sheet), and 09 in front
of Web. Simply exchange the values of these two bytes, i.e. put 09 in front of
Sheet, and 02 in front of Web. Save the file back to its original location. Now you have to do a soft reboot to make the shell read the modified shell.ini
file. Be careful not to do anything that would make the shell rewrite the file
before you reboot (i.e. do not change the extras bar or any system preferences). (It should be enough to restart the shell at this point: Ctrl-Shift-Fn-K.) Voila, press the Sheet icon. Your web browser should come up. You can check the extras bar to see that Sheet is now on the position where Web had been before---on row one above the Sheet icon. You can therefore start Sheet by holding Control when you press the Sheet icon.
Nothing can really go wrong when you do this. If you really mess up the file,
the system will simply discard it and overwrite it using the default settings.

Hi ALYG,
You asked:
>Supposing I'm working on a Sheet or Word document on my Psion and I need to email >it to a friend/colleague - but she doesn't have PSIWin on her PC. Is there a utility >available that would convert my document BEFORE I send it from my Psion. ie. such >that the attachment she receives can be dropped straight into Excel/Lotus123 or MS >Word/Amipro, etc?
The only conversion software I know that runs standalone on a Psion is nConvert by Neuon, see <www.Neuon.com>, and another one, perhaps X-Convert (not sure).
Concerning text conversion, it's ok, you have however to receive the texte files in an .RTF format (.doc or whatsoever doesn't work), converting native word files into .RTF format is also ok.
But .... I never succeeded in converting reliably excel files nor converting sheet to excel.
AmiPro, 123, wordpro and 123 (millenium or 32 bit versions)are unknown to nConvert (since now) I hope the authors will have a closer look at these file formats as they are now supported by PsiWin 2.33. Concerning the conversion probs encountered with excel files, I was in contact with Neuon but got no information on a futur update.
You may download the file and try it within 30 days for free if I remember well
Cheers,
Marc

I too find the IR Travel Modem extremely unreliable, which is a shame as it can be used with the Revo/S5/S7 which makes it the most versatile modem for all models. Good news. Yes, there was an adaptor which Psion actually tailor made originally for the 3c but it also worked well with the later S5 (I used one with both models) to offer maximum connectivity options. It simply plugged into the serial port on the Psion, took 4 AA batteries (or could be powered from the mains), was extremely compact and worked very well with my Nokia Data Card and old 2146 "housebrick" (remember them?) but would work just as well with a Psion Dacom Card plugged into a landline. Unfortunately Psion stopped manufacturing this handy adaptor quite a long time ago now but you may still be able to pick one up on the secondhand market. Hope this helps.
