Just for the record, the 5ive is ER3. My Control Panel is filled (3x4 icons worth).
Itamar: Thanks for the tip about the s5tips file - I had completely forgotten about that file. I must go through it again - perhaps in
the evenings on my bike trip to Canada (Banff/Lake Louise). I'm
leaving tomorrow for 2 weeks.

Subject: PsiWont v Hyperterminal
After buying loads of cheap software at Berrys sale spent most of the day at my mate's PC running Windows XP trying to get my netBook to talk to it. Nightmare. Tried the cable in each Comms port in turn using every combination of ports possible. Nada. Searching through my database of digest tips came across following reference to Hyperterminal :
"With EPOC I tend to fire up the Comms app on the netBook and HyperTerminal on a PC and transfer the files that way."
Suspect it was from Mike McConnell cos found an excellent help file I'd downloaded from his website which guided me through the procedure from start to finish. And success! Works a treat. From terminal virgin to computer whizz in 5 minutes! So thanks for that Mike. So good I thought it was worth repeating.
After a bit of delving to locate port settings I whizzed through and uploaded everything neatly into place. Relief and a good reminder why I don't have a PC ! Am hoping things will proceed in a similar fashion when using the RangerDisk3 external drive if I manage to track one down. (Still looking if anyone wants to sell me one?)
As an aside came across another tip in my Digest file which did finally enable a connection with Psiwont 2.3, so at least I know it can work! This one is thanks to Lawrence Porter. Cheers mate!
"Before I connect the MC218 I have to use Hyperterminal (available in Accessories) to grab COM1. I then explicitly hang up the connection and -magically- the MC218 now connects."
Magic indeed. No idea why it works but it did - until Psiwin froze that is and I crashed the PC. So I finished off the session with Hyperterminal!
Just wanted to acknowledge what a great resource the Digest is. If I'd have tried to solve it on Psion's helpline would have cost me a fortune at £1 a minute and I wager they wouldn't have come up with the answer anyway. So nice one people, and especially Itamar for keeping it all together.
Darryl
Very happy not to have go near a PC again

Hi,
Itamar, I had a problem installing Pi beam from the control panel the 7 froze - you can use the standalone app. Apparently it's a known problem Thanks Andy for confirming the fact that 'No more'messes the CF. It was that that caused my CF to become unreadable and think bad things of the 7! I then had problems trying to reformat the card in my pc. I'm sure it worked on the Mc218 but there are more differences than you might expect.

Just use Outlook. Sync all your Psion mail with Outlook then install Active Sync and sync all your mail with you Jornada 710.

That's not always the case Andy. Many shareware applications come in cab form that can be downloaded and installed directly onto your Jornada. For those that aren't you can try mailing the developers who, IME, are often happy to supply the cab file.

Subject: Fw: Psion's future; screen problem; Samsung A300 & P5
Hi,
As an avid user, I am concerned about Psion's situation - can anyone update me? I know they have ceased production, but is there anyone carrying on? Is the design up for sale?!?! Are Ericsson going to make any more Epoc machines? Are there any other machines that use the Epoc platform?
Secondly, I have a more technical problem... I have a psion 5mx which seems to have suddenly developped a fault. When I turn the machine on, dark lines appear on the screen running from top to bottom. When I hold the screen at a certain angle, however, the screen functions properly. Any ideas? Could it be something to do with the ribbon connecting the screen to the rest of the machine? Is this replaceable, if so where can one get one/who could replace it.
Thirdly! I am trying to use my Samsung A300 with a classic Psion 5. I have spoken to my mobile phone company and have gone through the tried and tested setup but with no luck. Has anyone tried this combination with success? The problem must be with the psion... I have tried using the comms app set to Ir with an AT command to get a response from the phone but this does not work either. My mobile phone company even replaced the handset but this did not solve the problem. Any help?
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Regards,
Tom

Subject: netBook ROMs in S7s
Fellow Digesters,
Being an inveterate upgrade freak I am severely tempted to acquire and install one of Dave's netBook ROMs in my S7 but by so doing would this result in my S7 becoming a netBook per sae? I seem to recall, for example, that the S7 power rating is lower than that of the netBook - hence IBM Microdrives will not function in the S7 PCMCIA slot. After installing the netBook ROM what else would I need to do, in both hardware and software terms? Does Dave provide and installation an upgrade guide with his ROMs? Regards to all,
Brian

Does anyone know where I can get the comms components from and why they are not present even though they are still listed in the add/remove list.
Also if anyone has a psion travel modem (second-hand) that they don't use any longer and would like to sell it on, please contact me. I live in Scotland.

Kevin, While I don't know any sites that have ready made MP3s for Psions I have had good luck making ones using MusicMatch software on a PC.

If you have CDs or LPs or even other MP3s recorded at higher quality you can rerecord them at the optimum parameters for the Psion.

On the subject of not having easy access to a PC, does anyone know any sites where I can obtain Mp3 files that are already suitable for EplayM (the EPOC Mp3 player) i.e. ones that don't need conversion first via a PC to the less demanding format required to run on EPOC?

Subject: Using C2F
I have been trying to convert my 5mx contacts file back to data so I can use
it in my 'spare' classic 5 - but not successfully.
It seems to get through all 762 entries and stops well enough, and reports
that I have a file about 405k. But when I open "data", open file
"Contactstemplate" and then "file" "more" "import text file" and specify
drive and file name, I only get one or two lines of header, then nothing
else.
I recently read here that empty fields throws this program off - (and I have
many empty fields) can anyone move me ahead a little?
TIA - Joe
ps: I have been reasonably successful by synchronizing to MSOutlook and then
exporting a CSV file, which I can then import into Psion as DOS text file,
and merge into an empty new data file.

Hi All
Steve, you might find Outlook to be the best way to do the conversion. I use Powerbase for my addresses and am having the devil's own job trying to get the addresses onto the wince device, but some of this is due to the bad design of my database.
Thomas, thanks for the advice on Wince serial comms etc. The complexity of it all makes the "free" terminal app on a Psion look very good value!
Thanks

Subject: NETBOOK SCREEN ROTATION / ROM / IPAQ BASHING
Hi Guys,
Re netBook screen rotation:
Feedback on my request to Psion Teklogix to write software to rotate the netBook screen between portrait and landscape modes. The answer is no, because the corporates haven't asked for it yet. I suppose that the implication is that if a corporate does ask for it one day it may happen.
Re netBook ROM:
According to the grapevine, Psion Teklogix is busy with a significant order for netBooks in a European country. This is using most of their resources at present and priority is being given to Build 158 of the ROM in the language of that country. We are therefore unlikely to see a de-bugged 158 UK ROM for some months yet.
Re iPAQ bashing:
I see that the HP/Compaq iPAQ is coming in for a severe bashing from disatisfied users. Check out www.ipaqpetition.com/

Emil,

Voice guidance and a direction screen has been available for Route and Street Planner for quite some in the form of the CoDriver application. It uses a GPS to detect where you are and supplies spoken instructions before you arrive at a crossing, for example.

Subject: Re: TomTom and Symbian OS
Arent,
<< tom-tom is going for PocketPC because that's were the REAL money is Also there's the fact that few of the upcoming devices will use the native GUI/application interface layer >>
A quick visit to its web site shows TomTom has versions of it's applications for EPOC Release 5, Symbian OS 6, Windows CE / Pocket PC as well as PalmOS. The well-known Route Planner and Street Planner are available for all four platforms, for example. This illustrates that TomTom doesn't consider Pocket PC as the only money spinner. Why create Route and Street Planner for the Symbian OS 6 based Nokia 9210 and 9290 when there's no money in it?
The products for the Nokias also illustrates that TomTom has the abilities to port applications based on EPOC Release 5 and the EIKON user interface to Symbian OS 6 and the Crystal interface. Or to port them to completely different platforms, for that matter. TomTom won't have much problems fitting its maps on the 176 by 208 pixel screen of the Nokia 7650 when it has already done so on the 160 by 160 pixel screen of a PalmOS device. A limiting factor is the 4 MByte of memory a 7650's equipped with. The full-detail street map of the Greater London Area I have on my Psion won't fit. However, TomTom also has its Maps-on-Line service. The current version of the Maps-on-Line client for the Nokia 92xx can thus be ported to the 7650.
<< Treat the future of anything with the full implementation of EPOC 32 as very uncertain , even Psion-teklogix is now moving to MS-DOS/MS-Windows(CE) as the user/programming interface on its industrial handhelds >>
Psion-Teklogix wouldn't have brought the EPOC Release 5 based netPad to market if that were true. The company would have dropped the netPad development project in favour of a device that came out of the Teklogix stable. Fact is that both Teklogix and Psion Enterprise Computing had active development projects before their merger into Psion-Teklogix. These projects were continued, with the (former Teklogix) 7510 project finishing earlier than the netPad project.
<< Sony-Ericsson and Nokia are the only ones going ahead with full versions of the operating system on their communicators >>
Matsushita, a long-time partner in Symbian Ltd, licensed Nokia's Symbian OS based Series 60 platform this month. Siemens acquired a 5% stake in Symbian in April this year and licensed the Series 60 platform in May. Samsung became both a Symbian licensee and Series 60 licensee in March. Neither Matsushita nor Siemens no Samsung take out such licenses because they think Symbian OS' a cute operating system or because they like Jorma Ollila's face.
So, what's it to be? Does Symbian OS now become the basis for more communicators cum smartphones that those by Nokia and Ericsson or not? Ah, you mention "full versions". Well ... as I've yet to see what this "full version" is supposed to be you can use it whenever you like it and always be correct. Which makes "full version" as much a spin doctor's smokescreen as your repeated reference to a "native GUI/application interface layer".

Subject: Re: Line numbering in EPOC Word
Dear Paul,
<< is there any means by which Word on a 5mx can be persuaded to do automatic line numbering, using letters or numbers, preferably nested? >>
Not the way MS-Word '97 does this. What's possible is to create a macro that places a number in front of each line. Problem is that the macro needs to the change the left margin of the document and to close each line with a hard return to retain the text flow of the original. Which makes the numbered document ready for printing but unsuitable for revision editing.

Not sarcastic at all. I used the lottery to illustrate you were asking 'crystal ball' type questions even a business analyst familiar with this section of industry finds very difficult to answer. The questions you asked about Psion Group Plc. are of the same nature. There's, in principle, nothing against asking such questions. However, are we dealing a discussion when the contribution of the one consists for 90% of questions and that of the other of information and explanation? It may not be your intention, but you do test the patience of the other party.

Answer to: Steve Palmer
Re. Jornada 710 - Your best bet I think will be to synchronise your Psion to Outlook and than Outlook with the 710. Will you let us know how you got along and whether you are satisfied or not ?
Answer to: AndyHayes
Re. S7 "musings" - I don't think I'll buy a case. I can easily put it in my briefcase up and down to/from the office, and when traveling for holiday (like now) I put it in the same bag as my camera. A docking station is far too expensive, I'll use the charger at work and the battery life at home. Even over the week-end 8 hours should be more than plenty. Can always buy a 2nd charger. As to Extras bar I use Macro5 and Assistant as well as Merlin which combined give me all the flexibillity I want/need. I specially like Merlin as it gives you different toolbars in different programs or even files.
About the battery. Sitting in the airplane with my Merlin battery checker telling me I have 10.5 V left I got my first battery low warning. At what voltage is the battery really low and should I be careful ? To what extreme can one use the S7 before one gets into "real danger" ?
And another question. On the S7 when I double click on a zip file I get "program not found" while on my 5MX the zip file would open with RMRZip. Why ?
Answer to: Peter Keene
Re. netBook upgrade - Clear, but you misunderstood me. I meant to say that if in future one could upgrade the netBook to Symbian v. 6.0 (like the 9210) than it would be incompatible with my 5MX. EPOC 5.0 works fine and I don't need to upgrade the OS for slight improvements.

Hi all,
This is truly amazing...467 members and counting.
Time for a poll to create some activity here plus I am really curious
1. What are your top five "must have" Epoc apps? [can include in-built apps]
2. Top 5 uses of your Psion?
3. Wish List app.
Let me get the ball rolling:
Top 5 apps: DCP, PhoneMan Pro, Money, Data (in-built), Contacts (in-built)
Top 5 uses: Contacts, SMS, Database (for Library, Essential Info), Ideas generator, Personal Finance.
Wish list app: a Notetaker or Outliner that allows me to generate freeflow ideas easily. (I do not like PsiMind personally, maybe because I do not have a mind!) The other NoteTakers, ListMakers available IMHO do not really feel intuitive enough.
This is interesting....while generating the Top 5 uses, I realised that I was really struggling for uses and I am now wondering if I really need a PDA after all or can I live with something like a Communicator.
