Subject: Broken 5 / IR 6310 / 3Link Serial Cable / Extrabars
Hi All
Just trying to catch up on a few days of the EPOC Digest since a family tragedy. My son dropped his spare 5 a couple of weeks ago and it shattered on the concrete into many pieces. It didn't seem worth sending it for repair, but I met an old mate of mine who can fix anything from a lawnmower to and a satellite. I gave him the five and he told me that he could get it going but it might be a bit of a bodge. A week or so later he gave me it back. It looked nothing like a 5. He had managed to salvage the keyboard and the stylus from the 5 and had bonded the former to the bottom half of an HP Jornada 690 (WinCE) utilising the Jornada motherboard. The 5 screen was totally smashed so he nailed a Palm screen to the Jornada bottom half. Somehow he managed to get the EPOC OS running on the Jornada motherboard. Well I said that he could fix anything. Anyway, he handed over this mutated thing to me and I wondered how on earth I was going to explain this thing in my hand to my son, who was so full of hope of getting his five back. I needn't have worried as the new Palmtop User magazine landed on my doorstep the following day. It seems to cover his "new" PDA perfectly ;-)
Daryll asked about IR on the 6310i. Pressing the button twice doesn't keep the IR on I'm afraid. I doesn't on the 6210 either. I still haven't set mine up on the net, so I can't answer any questions on that front yet.
Phil asked about 3Link cables. These sell on Ebay for stupid money so I wish you the best of luck in getting a free one.
Extrabars is one of those apps that I wouldn't be without. It is a shame that it seems to be unsupported now. It is also a shame that it fails to hide so many of the apps on my netBook. One solution to your problm Philip might be to rename the .app file with a .xxx extension and then rename it back to .app for each of the problem apps. This sometimes makes the device "find" them again. I don't think that this idea works with RMRZip though for some reason. An additive to Extrabars that might work for you would be an app called NoMore. unfortunately I have had a number of problems with this screwing itself up and giving a message that the D: drive is corrupt on my netBook. The fix was always to put the CF in a laptop and delete the NoMore folder from System / Apps. A couple of other people have had the problem, but there may well be people that have had success with it. i must admit to having not contacting the author to advise him/her of the bug.

Re. GPRS - This has now been around for quite some time. Can someone commenthow the costs compare to a normal GSM connection ? Is it a lot moreexpensive to use, slightly more expensive or not at all ? Did anyone try theroaming in other countries with GPRS ?

Hi Itamar,
The way I justify the cost of GPRS (about £2.50 per Megabyte per month withVodafone's new GPRS Select Tariff) is to know that I haven't got to watchthe clock at all when
I'm online. I just have to think about the data flow! How many pages of textadd
up to a megabyte? -I don't know, but I'm sure someone is working it outeven now ;-)
You can clock up a bit more while on the web via Opera, especially withpages downloading
so quickly. However, as you probably read in the last Digest, my psion seemsto want
to close down Opera if it starts to run out of memory, so in a way it'sself-limiting.
As for roaming, am I right in thinking that Voda have a deal with telecomproviders in France?

Robin

No, there's no difference.
The .htm version is a result of a poorly designed file system and even worse software... (FAT and Windows)
Basically, when the Web were begun, EVERYONE who did anything used *nix (Unix, AIX, and all those, not Linux, it was before the age of penguins )
All *nix versions have rather well designed file systems which allows for decent sized file names, so they picked one letter from each word (Hyper Text Markup Language) and used that as the ending.
Then came M$... This was in the good old days with win 3.1...
Windows, and programs running on it, couldn't handle files with four letter endings.... Therefore just .htm
Interestinly enough, you could make the File Manager in WfW3.1/3.11 display 'long' 16.3 filenames on network disks if you edited the ini file.
(In case you had a M$ Lan Manager or IBM Lan Server, both OS/2 based and using the HPFS filesystem)
As for why WEB/Opera or any other browser displays the files correctly...
They spot the first part of the file <HTML> which tells them that it's a 'valid' html file.
If it can't find the tag, it assumes that it's a 'pure text' file and displays it like that...
(Unless of course, a plugin or something exists for that file type)
---
About GPRS, there's one function that no one's mentioned yet...
Some phones allows BOTH GPRS Data and GSM Voice at the same time...
(I really must try this with my M50 soon :-)

Fun computer fact of the day:
The Norwegian 'West PC800', introduced in 1984, was a dual processor setup with a 6502 to run BBC basic and a Z80 to run CP/M. It also came with built-in 300baud modem and an alarm central, making it capable of calling you at work if someone burglarised your house. The keyboard was detatchable, and used Infrared leds to relay your keypresses.(Had a poor regulator, so you knew it was a new keyboard if smoke poured out of it)
The PSU was made by prison inmates, and the first 50 or so fitted so badly that they had to be beaten with a rubber mallet to slot into place...
How I know this, and what does this have to do with Psions?
One of the designers later started his own computer shop where I bought my first Psion, an S3a 512KB model, and later the S5.
He also designed the binoculars Luke Skywalker used early in Star Wars.
(Yes, it's a REAL set, only the exterior was changed)
How he got me hooked? He demonstrated his S3(classic), which, incidentally, he still uses.(Don't need more, he says)

Subject: Re: Drente
Dear David,
<< 'Drent' is a place? or a person who comes from a particular area? >>
A Drent is somebody who's born in the province of Drente, one of the 12 provinces of the Netherlands. As I was born in Assen, the provincial capital, it makes me a Drent. But the Brunsting family itself has lived in Drente for centuries. A distant family member is working on the family tree which currently goes back to Leffert Breustinghe who was born around 1550.
The family originally comes from the village of Hijken but bought a plot of land from the Ten Achterenkamp estate of squire Jacob van Eghten in 1621. We have a copy of the charter of sale as well as a copy of a land registry map of 1639 showing five farms plus their allotments. One of the farms is in the name of Leffert's grandson, also called Leffert. These farms were the beginnings of the small village of Brunsting where my father was born, my grandfather was born, my great-grandfather was born, etc, etc. Additional plots of the Ten Achterenkamp estate were purchased and the whole estate was mentioned as owned by Aaldert Brunstinge in 1728. My great-great-great-grandfather.
<< Are you seafarers? Or tulip growers? Or perhaps cheese makers? >>
The family were gentleman-farmers. Their title was that of "Eigengeerfde" which dates back to the time when the whole of Drente was a fiefdom of the Archbishop of Utrecht. Some of the Archbishop's leasehold farmers had received the right for the lease to be passed on from father to son. Eigengeerfde literally translates into 'self-inherited'.
Being an Eigengeerfde included some additional rights and duties. One of them was that only an Eigengeerfde could be elected as "Ette". That is, being the representative for their area, called a "Dingspil" in the "Etstoel", the provincial court of law. The above Leffert Breustinghe was Ette in 1609 and between 1612 and 1618. His grandson Leffert was Ette from 1635 to 1663. While my great-great-grandfather Otte Remmelt Brunsting was Ette from 1767 till 1790, the year the Etstoel was abolished.
Though the Etstoel doesn't exist anymore it's part of the history of Drente that's been revived. The meetings of the Etstoel are now recreated once every year. Only those who can prove they are the descendant of an Ette can preside at these meetings. This year's meeting is at the end of this month and I'll be taking the seat formerly held by my ancestors as Ette for the Beiler Dingspil.
Don't make too much of the above. The Brunstings were a wealthy and important family. It was at the lower reaches of the national scale, however, as Drente was the poorest province of the Netherlands. It consisted mainly of vast peat bogs, large stretches of sand with few vegetation plus a few forested sections. It wasn't one of the founding provinces of the Republic of the United Seven Provinces as it didn't even exist as a province at that time. The economical development of Drente only started around 1860.
As for the Brunstings of Brunsting - none of the family members live in Brunsting anymore as my grandfather moved to Beilen in the early '30s. The farmhouse where my father was born was demolished in 1946. And the last of the lands were sold by my grandfather in 1967.
<< Do you wear clogs? >>
I did wear them as a small boy.
<< Can you dance? >>
I leave that to my nephew and his wife - they're members of a folkloristic troupe that keeps the old dances alive.
<< Are your herrings sweet or sour? >>
Either sour or salty. That is, from a historical perspective. Brunsting was too far removed from the sea for fresh herring. What herring there was available, as Drente was difficult to travel through, was of a pickled variety we call 'green herring' or as salted herring.

Kind Regards,
Rolf Brunsting - Darp - Drente

Re. RMR - Another reason why I choose the S7 over the 9210, I have over 80 extra programs on my S7 (5MX) with many officially registered ones. Just think the cost of reregistering most of these .... And yes, the digest did get a mention in the PalmtopUser, reason why we are now over 500 subscribers. Who had thought that when I started with just some 30 addresses.
Re. IR modem - If it does not work for you, replace it. My problems are linked to where I use it. At home = problems, Oslo hotel room and office = problem free. It might well be the phone line ? Just before you throw it away (I live too far away, otherwise I would stand underneath your window when you throw it out <G>) try it somewhere else.

>>Re. Fax classes - The possibillity to send faxes depends also heavily on the modem used. I remember that I never succeeded with a USRobotic modem, my old travelmodem was not ok but my Nokia 7110 was no problem.<<
Yesterday , I got my US Robotics Courier to reliably send and receive faxes
The secret :
I found that the Ericsson DI-27 worked so I copied the settings to a new modem profile called USRobotics Fax
Left all the fields blank ,selected hardware flow control and ticked only DTR on
I have checked the log ( c:\system\FAXLOG.TXT) and the transmissions went fine (Msgsuite on ER4 ignores however the "End of document transmitted <dle><eop>"response from the modem or remote fax machine when transmission/reception is completed so checking the fax log is the ***only*** way here to know if your fax has gone through
Note for Marcus :
I used the setup I described earlier in the CompuServe Palmtop Forum to connect two palmtops together , now with the OsariS which can receive faxes as well as send ,this offered me the opportunity to do extensive testing of the OsariS fax capabilitiess before going live
The faxes received on the OsariS from my SHARP Zaurus Classic are as crisp as documents created on the device itself
I also did succeeded to transfer a 14 page document that way from my Zaurus to this thing and forward it to my HP680LX wich has bSquare's bFax Pro on board
Tip :
Using the ATI6, ATI11 and ATI 16 commands you can get a connection log , including all call parameters ,as well as the amount of data sent and received and the time you stayed online
How to get these info :
First open a Datacomms session and check if the modem responds
Now close the serial port and start MessageSuite , when you're done log off using Ctrl+U Ctrl+U , leave Msgsuite open , go back to Comms and open the port
Type in the abovementoned commands and you will now see a link diagnostic screen (ATI 6 followed by ATI 11 ) and then a line frequency characteristic (ATI 16) in the form of an ASCII histogram
The OsariS does **not** offer logging facilities for Email !
Today I purchased at Funtronics a Psion 12Volt adapter wich I plugged in the junction box I made myself to allow me to use a single power brick for both the OsariS and the modem ,the same also powering a FriWo GigaBox for recharging the NiMH's
(You will need a 12-15 Volts 2Amp power supply to do this !)S7/netBook/netPad users can use this setup to charge the battery offline disconnect the power lead from their device when going online
Battery usage on my OsariS until now is 826 mAh for 18 hours on a set of 1800mAh GoldPoints
MessageSuite as a whole works fine but it is godforsakenly slow on this machine , so slow that there is little or no improvement when going past the default 4800 baud setting on the serial port
Downloading files and documents using Web worked fine (nice touch :if Web encounters a "mixed "file such as a .cab or .sis file it displays the text portions of it
To save such a file go into the "file" menu ,select under "More" "Save As" ,then Web will redownload the file and when the second download is completed comes back with a Save As dialog box
Email : Again great idea but impracticably slow ,takes ages to refresh remote mailboxes , uses maildir in extremo but no separate local mailboxes corresponding for each remote one
Multiple attachments are not always recognized ( guess who's responsible for that ?)
Fax and email messages share common in and outboxes

I had similar issues with an USR Courier V Everything 56k Corporate Analog modem
After making a separate fax settings template (all fields blank) it worked
In Fax mode no initstrings are necessary , in Data mode a full script that includes modem initialisation and dialling commands as well is necessary
Modems that require full sripting can be used for Data only fax requires an Email to fax service ( so no fax receive and no formatted text , non-US character sets and no graphics )
This is however an extremely rare situation as most modems auto-init for fax transmissions

Subject: Bluetooth drivers / Nokia Ir port
Kevin Thorne was bemoaning the lack of Bluetooth drivers. My R520 has Bluetooth so that might even solve my fax problems : )
If I remember correctly the next Revo model (odin?) Psion was developing with Motorola was to have been Bluetooth enabled. But Motorola pulled out and it never came to production. Anyone know anyone at Psion to contact re getting hold of the drivers, as presumably they were already written.
Unless of course it was to have run ER6 and not ER5. The Nokia 7650 is Bluetooth enabled (data only) although that might be because it's a Nokia rather than because it's a Symbian device. And the 9210 is not Bluetooth enabled at all. So my guess is they had Bluetooth drivers for an ER5 device which would more than likely run not just on the netBook but the 5mx as well as they were to have been for a "Revo" type device.
Or is this just wishful thinking?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nokia IR auto off
Well so far digestees have written in with the following results, all negative
6210 7110 9210 8810, 6310, 8310 and 6510
I tried it on a friends 8210 and while the Ir icon did stop flashing after selecting twice, it then started flashing again after a short while and cut out after 2 minutes!
But the thought did occur to me (later) that it might have started flashing again because it was idle. Has anyone actually connected to the web while the icon was stable? This might be what the Nokia guy I spoke to was on about. Or he might just have been trying to sell me a phone! Might be worth trying to see if once a connection is made whilst the icon is stable, the auto off is disabled until the connection is terminated when the icon starts flashing again and automatically turns itself off.
Reminds me of those indicator switches in cars that automatically cut out as you turn the corner, but also cut out when you're half way round the roundabout so you have to reengage them in the middle of the manouvere! Looks useful on paper but a pain in the arse in real life!
I haven't received the promised phone back re Fax Class support from Nokia so am biding my time, at least until the 7210 appears late Septemberish. If I am going to upgrade might as well upgrade to the latest toy!

Subject: Fax with Psion
With reference to Jason Garbutt's posting re "...faxing with my T39m..."
"Having perservered with different settings, I have now managed to send faxes using both Class 1 & 2.
However, I have been unable to receive a fax.
If it can send faxes, and answer an incoming fax call, I can't see why it can't receive a fax ?"
Exactly what I want to know! Since losing my SH888 been having endless grief trying to fax via my Psion. Has saved the day more than once when my boss's server has been down! Trawling through the old digests seems to be a long running problem with Psions and mobile phones. Even the SH888 seemed to suffer at one stage:
"Reading some complaints about Ericsson IR phones not working with incoming or outgoing faxes, I remember having the same problems with my SH888"
However mine always worked faultlessly so I think this was just a firmware issue, which seems to have occured again with the R320 :
"I have the r320. It works perfectly well with a Psion (except for incoming FAXes)"
"Incoming faxes are only a problem with some firmware versions"
Ericsson were very emphatic, if unspecific, on the matter when I queried them re this :
"Your R320s should work fine as a fax modem."
They were equally emphatic about my R520m :
"NOTE: ERICSSON SWEDEN STATE THAT THE R520 AND MC218 WILL NEVER BE COMPATIBLE" [for data and email]
"(R520 does not support fax on Psion devices)"
And on the Psion website at the moment only Nokia handsets seem to be fax compatible. For Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens it says the following :
"You will not be able to send & receive faxes using this handset as it does not support Fax Class 2 or 2.0. Due to timing difficulties with GSM networks the Series 5, 5mx and 7 require Fax Class 2 or 2.0 support."
"Due to timing difficulties it not always possible to send faxes using the Siemens SL-45."
Someone on the digest did manage to fax from the S35i but they didn't mention if they could receive :
"Sending faxes works, but with problems...managed to stabilise sending faxes by lowering the modem speed to 4800"
The T39 is not a "Psion tested phone" so is missing from the Psion website chart, but I was informed by Ericsson Data support, after much prodding, that all current Ericsson handsets do not support Fax Class 2 (T68i etc.) But they were unable to provide any info as to future handsets such as the P800.
Rolf Brunsting gave a very helpful discourse on Fax Classes (thanks Rolf) but he also had the following info re T68 in contraindication to this :
"I've checked a command response log for an Ericsson T68 I had left on one of my Psions and it responded positively to the AT+FCLASS=2 and AT+FCLASS=2.0 commands."
I ran these as commands with my R520 and just got ERROR, probably because they're not actual commands (!) but did elicit the following info from my phone :
ati7
R520 Modem Configuration Profile
Product Type Internal Terminal Adapter
Interfaces Bluetooth, IrDA, System Bus
Options FAX, GPRS, OBEX, RLP, V42bis
AT+FCLASS=?·
0,1,2
OK
This would seem to imply, to me at any rate, that the R520 supports Fax Class 2 over IrDA! But I have only managed to send from my Psion with fax Class 1, and cannot receive at all. I get the following command on my phone screen when receiving a fax :
"You can only answer this call from external equipment eg a PC"
Rolf did say "...that the fax transfer protocol wasn't written with GSM in mind."
But the problem doesn't seem to be limited to GSM. Found the following in an old digest
"There is an incompatibility (bug?) between the 5mx and the old 14.4k Travel Modem which means that it doesn't work properly with fax."
With all this talk about 3G networks and such doesn't bode very well when can't even send a fax! Hardly cutting edge technology is it ? And disappointed that Psion have failed to implement it successfully, especially when ER5 was around for so long. Anyone with a Palm/Pocket PC have this problem?
This has turned into a huge posting so apologies for not being more concise. Basically would just like to know WHY all this hassle with Fax over GSM and is there anything that can be done to 'fix' the fax function on the Psion.

Subject: Off Topic - In-car holders
Hi All
Apologies that this is so far off topic, but knowing what a wide range of skills that we have on this list I thought that it might be useful to put this forward now as I no longer have access to these materials / tools.
I use an in-car phone holder which is just a magnet with a piece of double sided sticky tape that sticks to the dashboard. The phone has a small piece of fairly thin metal stuck, again with double sided sticky tape, to the battery. To buy this kit is about a 5ukp, but you have to buy the battery each time. I only need the 40mm x 15mm piece of metal which I could stick with double sided tape that I have at home.
Is there anyone on the list that could turn out say half a dozen 40mm x 15mm strips of thin (ferrous!) metal with a small rad on each corner? Measurements dont need to be accurate, a few mm either side wouldnt make any difference, and the rad is purely to make it easier to handle. I am happy to pay for time / materials / postage (to West Sussex).
Thanks a lot
Andy Hayes

Subject: Faxing or Email using Ericcson MC218+T28W+di27
I've just received a new MC218 and a Diamond MAKO (Revo) with a Ericcson T28W phone and DI27 modem
Here in the USA, I can obtain Voicestream (a GSM) service provider.
Has anyone any information as to the proper way to configure the MC218 / Diamond Mako to send and receive Email and/or Fax using the above equipment, with the correct settings, etc.
I realize that I am coming rather late to the Psion family, but the units are just great so far.
TIA

I tried it out. If you change the name of the word-document (which consist of html) to *.html and open it with web, no warning 'this file could be open with word' will appear. The file will be opened with web and only few bytes of the header will be displayed at the beginning and few bytes at the end. (Tested on a 5 mxPro)
I would prefer the Symbian Text Editor anyway...

Therefore they know about the relationship :)

Subject: Re: SMS / different languages / colour magic / FreeUK
Hi group,
Re: SMS
Itamar, I have used the message centre for my home network Ben NL. Do you mean that when I am in France I have to use the SFR, Orange or Bouygues message centre? I always thought that the advantage of SMS was that it always works with your home network message centre.
Update: I have succesfully managed to send SMS's to Dutch phones when in France, and when I drop the +33 from the French phone numbers and use the 06 format instead I do not get any error messages, they are sent away, but they are not received. If I use the 06-format, am I actually sending it to a French phone or to a phone in my home country. When I _call_ a 06 number, I get a French phone.
Re: different languages
Peter, your example of a French bank employee is not a good one. ;-)
They _always_ behave like that even with their French clients!
One of my Dutch friends actually has a chequebook with 'ETRANGER' (foreigner) stamped on every cheque in big red letters. Now, he really DID upset the employee, apparently.
Re: Colourmagic.
Itamar, you are not afraid that it might mess up you 7 as it did with Trygveh's Netbook?
FreeUK
I finally got the official answer from Free UK on my request whether it is possible to use my French Freesurf account with their servers. The &*%£ sent me the settings to connect with Freesurf in France while using a Free UK account ('for our sister company Freesurf France')!!!
Aaarghhh...
Yes, I did ask clearly the inverse AND they know I am a Freesurf user, because they sent the answer to my Freesurf mail address.
Fortunately, I also got an answer from Jack and from someone at Freesurf. If anyone is interested: you can connect with your Freesurf account in the UK with your login name, your Freesurf settings and the number 0845 1264001 . You might change the SMTP-server, though, that is not quite clear to me...
Yours truly,
Thomas van der Zijden
