Subject: Broken flange

I have the same problem with mine, and I am always able to slide the base back under the aluminum plate, but it does require some coordination.  I use a silver letter opener -- a thin table knife might work as well.  It has to be long, narrow, and very thin.  Put the edge of the blade (about 1/2 inch from the end) under the surviving flang, and work the tip under the edge of the aluminum plate.  Then "lever" the flange under the edge, using the blade something like a shoehorn.  Sometimes it helps if you slide the case closed as you are doing this.  It might take a few tries.  I've done this more times than I can count, and the machine seems no worse off, so I don't think you can do much harm.  Just keep trying different angles.

Dear All,

I have finally given up on my Psioneering, after many years, first with the ii and then with the 3 and lastly with the 7.

Alas, i have finally bought a notebook. I do still have the seven and several sets of cables a psion dacom 56 k modem and compact flash card. also, have pswin cd rom and manual for the psion plus a leather case. the 7 has the dimm memory upgrade etc.

The psion is working fine most of the time, sometimes the keys behave unpredictably,  but has been around the globe with me so it is not in mint condition. Is anyone interested in buying the lot off me for a reasonable sum?

<Re. IR modem - If it does not work for you, replace it. My problems are linked to where I use it. At home = problems, Oslo hotel room and office = problem free. It might well be the phone line ? Just before you throw it away (I live too far away, otherwise I would stand underneath your window when you throw it out <G>) try it somewhere else.>

I'll try anything (and I'll let you know the result once I manage to get a few uses from a different landline source), although I fail to understand why the phone line could make any difference to its operation.  Even if it did, this would be of no help to me as I can't use it reliably at home!

Subject: 5mx flapping keyboard: flap over

Just to let you know that I took my courage in both hands and followed the guidance by Paul Dunkel on http://gamma.nic.fi/~jmietti/pda/psion5rep1.htm in order to remove the bottom half of the clamshell, which enabled me to hook in the catch on the underside of the keyboard.

The hardest part was reattaching the bottom cover: for some reason I had the bloodiest job getting three little plastic tags into their slots, and I was bending the casing and the keyboard perilously, as well as threatening to scrape the PCB constantly. I left the AA batteries in, but  inevitably I heard the beep of a hard reset in the middle of all this.

But now it's coming up to 2:30 a.m., I've restored, and all seems well. Thanks to Susan for her advice (sadly, I couldn't figure out how to follow it - maybe I had the wrong kind of paper-knife) and to anyone else whose advice is on its way as I write. Alarmingly, Susan says she's done this more often than she can remember. I'd hate to have to go through this often.

But I have some of that satisfaction I imagine you get when you've stripped a car engine down and put it together again. Trouble is, the next problem will be something quite different.

Cheers,

Chris

This happened to me a few times.  I was able to stick a long thin knive under the keyboard and push the tab out enough to get it back in while the keyboard was open half way.

However, the tab on the right grew weak and it got harder and harder to put back in every time it popped out.  Finally I bit the bullet and broke off the right tab, and everything's been wonderful ever since.  The left one now stays in no problem, and the keyboard works fine.

Managed to dig out the following from "Your EPOC" :-

"How To Find Worms

Hit ctrl-tab to bring up the file dialog in the system screen. Switch to the "Z:/" Drive and navigate to "System\Programs." Click okay. You'll be back in the main system screen and you should see the "Worms.opo" file. Run this file!"

The netBook I bought already had ROM 158 loaded onto it, but no trace of Worms. However I decided to do a hard reset and reload the ROM from the netBook CD, which turned out to be ROM 153. Checked the Z drive and lo and behold there was Worms exactly as described. Great fun to play!

Then loaded ROM156 to have a look to see if it's still there and it's not!

On another note the original Italian version of ROM 158 was reported to come with nftp bundled with it. This was later removed. BUT I've just come across it for download from the PsionTeklogix site. You have to register for free for the Partners program, then go to the Netpad development kit section and it's in the Downloads section. FTP engine version 1.31(50). Pukka!

Also Opera v3.62 release 1.04 - much nicer than my release 1.0, shows you the link when you tap on it ala WEB and has a help file this time! Plus it also includes a pdf Opera User Guide! Might finally work out how to use the thing now.

Just noticed that all the individual built in apps also come with their own User Guide. Nice touch.

Subject: FAXING ON GSM / 7210

For Peter in Cape Town who wrote

"Apologies if this is a dumb question, but are you enabling IrDA reception on the cell as soon as you get the fax ringing tone?"

Answer is yes! Used to fax all the time via IR on my old SH888 no bother. It is only the newer Ericsson models that seem to be non-IR enabled. Thanks for confirming that the Nokia 6210 at least works over IR as been unable to verify that myself. Mention stuff like that to mobile phone salesmen and they generally don't have a clue. In the UK at any rate phones are more of a fashion accessory these days. I bought my R520 off line cos I was told it was fax and data enabled - but not with a Psion it turns out! An expensive mistake I am keen not to repeat.

Itamar asked about the 7210

This is to replace the 6210i and will have Java Technology, polyphonic ringtones, MMS, and triband coverage. Due late September so might be some cheap 6210's going about then!

I did the same myself about a year ago, my open Psion fell from chest height to the floor, disassembling itself but still working.

I can't remember exactly how I repaired it, but I do remember using a small screwdriver to further disassemble the Psion before I could get the slots back in. I also seem to remember plugging in the power cord in order to preserve the memory, as this disassembly involved unscrewing the battery holder.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but hope this gets you on the right track. If I can work it out I'm sure it can't be that hard <G>.

Jason

Subject: Palmtop User

hiya all,

Steve Clack who used to publish the excellent Palmtop magazie for Psion users and the Palm User magazine for Palm  users, has now combined these in a new publication Palmtop User. See http://www.palmtop.co.uk or e-m

I have always thought that the original Palmtop magazine was a good one for Psion users. Not a "commercial magazine" stuffed with adverts, but a good quality user magazine with adverts which were for the products in the magazine. To me it looks like the new Palmtop User will continue this with the advantage of all the various PDAs and mobile platforms under one roof, which will help make comparisions.

BTW the new EPOC digest features on page 8 bottom right.

If you subscribe you could mention my name. I have know Steve C and L (the 3-lib guy) since the 3a days.

Subject: Keyboard problem

Hi  Chris,

Your problem is definitely possible to cure yourself, but NOT with brute force. I corrected it in the past for one of my colleagues. You have to open the 5MX totally and try to move the keyboard slightly to one side and bent it up a little in the middle, at the same trying to wiggle the catch back underneath the slot. You might try to use a SMALL screwdriver to do this. If the second catch is broken you will have to be careful with opening and closing it and it eventually might need repair. If you live in London I would be able to help you ..... any travelplans ?

Subject: Update on SMS

Hi group,

I reported that I could not send SMS's to French phones when in France. Jack has succeeded in sending me some SMS's, but I still cannot do the inverse. I tried Itamar's advice to use the local message centre from SFR, but the result was that none of my SMS's arrived, not even the messages to the Dutch phones. So I reverted to my own, Dutch message centre.

But even stranger things happen. My 7110 has two memories, on the chip and in the phone. If I use the phone's memory, the phone does not recognise the caller (it just says 'appel'). If I use the SIM's memory, it does recognise the caller, but then it only shows the number, because their names are all in the phone's memory. It works fine in The Netherlands!

So... this is getting a bit OT, but I think that my Dutch network screwed something up with my chip. I have absolutely _no_ idea how.

That having said: I am still using the beta of Phoneman's plug-in for the 7110 and I am not very convinced of its functionality. I especially dislike the fact that when it has sent the SMS's, Phoneman still keeps communicating with the IR port of the 7110. I never know when it has finished its tasks. And I still have to keep in mind that the beta has a bug which can sometimes reset the Psion, if I read the memory of the phone first and then try to send an SMS.

Phoneman also sometimes refuses to send long SMS's (>160). Yes, I have enabled that function. It refuses to send them at random. E-mail's SMS functionality CAN send the same SMS.

When will they finally fix it for my 7110? I guess never, because it is now an 'old' phone.

Anyway, enough ramblings. The Psion's keyboard still is a great help for SMS!

Re: registration tied to the Psion.

I have two questions on this.

1. Why did Psion include this unique ID in every Psion? Was it meant for registration purposes for shareware? Psion itself uses the registration number for reparation purposes (combined with the RMA) which is not identical to the unique ID in the ROM.

2. Arent, could you confirm that the unique ID of your Osaris is 12 times 0, or something general like that? It seems that Oregon did not bother to give unique numbers to their machines. A big advantage for Osaris owners who change their machines! ;-)

Yours truly,

Should I ever attempt to open the 5mx myself I will have a very good look (again) on

Ruey Loons pages.

There he provides a detailed guide with lots of photos of how to dismantle a 5 (including the keyboard). The purpose for writing such a guide was the often mentioned screen-failure-problem and how to solve without replacing the whole screen. But you might find the needed instruction for your keyboard problem as well.

Good luck!

Subject: gsm infax

Hi Itamar,   Subject: In faxes

Your suggestion of using a third party faxmailer, >www.yac.com< for instance, looks good to me.

I never liked to have to fire up both the irDA mobile phone and psion as soon as an incoming fax rang me to do so, nor did I like to hang my psion with Email as a permanent fax answering machine.

So I tried some web based solutions; www.Comparatel.fr became my favorite; it allows to download AND/OR forward incoming faxes (as attached .tiff or .gif files that Mnbview convert a treat).

Usually one as to pay (PRO) to get real time SMS or email warning of each incoming msg.

For this I use an €1.5/month option from my gsm operator which :

- gave me an infax # (different from the vocal#)

- send one SMS to tell me each time a fax reach this fax number.

- forward the incoming fax(es) to my Comparatel inbox (from where I'll download and/or forward them as attachement(s) to email).

I would really like to read more from experienced fellows psionists  on their infax solutions.

Subject: Arriving in UK soon, need Psion.net / LineOne dialup number

Hi gang.

If the weather suits, I'll be in Shetland within a few days. I'm now in Ålesund in NW Norway making some last preparations and waiting for a more favourable wind direction for the crossing than the present south-westerly.

I have a Psion.net (LineOne) Internet account which I signed up for years ago, and as the e-mail address and POP server works, I assume it is still active. When I get to the UK, I'll need to connect to the Internet via an UK dialup number which works via GSM (with a cash card). Does anyone here have the dialup number for Psion.net / LineOne, and can you confirm is this works via GSM?

I'd also like suggestions for which cash card to buy (Ericsson T39m if that makes any difference) and alternate suggestions for free ISPs which works via GSM if there is any reason I shouldn't use Psion.net. Can I use UK2 which Rick Gillyon mentioned via GSM from the UK? I tried connecting to the UK2 number from Norway, but that didn't work.

From Shetland, I'll be heading south via Fair Isle, the Orkneys, The Caledonian Canal and Irish sea, and hopefully spending the winter somewhere on the south coast of Ireland or possibly Wales or Cornwall. Please if any of you live along my route or will be in these areas when i pass through, don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be delighted to meet fellow Psioneers.

Activating the IR port, doesn't matter how many times you do it in sequence, switches the phone to what's best described as 'IrDA discovery mode'. In other words, the phone starts to send out "Anybody there?" messages.

I'm sorry, but you're mixing up messages. The reason why things appear to be confusing.

Note that I've already been rapped on the knuckles for writing lengthy messages. There's a fellow Digest subscriber who's wondering whether his next mobile phone bill means instant hart attack. The reason why I have to ration my words and can't always go into the nitty gritty details.

As for GPRS, we're effectively saying the same thing but take a different approach. Explaining the differences would take me well over my word quota so it's better to leave it at this point.

Subject: Re: Palmtop User magazine

Dear Steve,

<< In defense of the magazine I help produce(!), can I say that .... >>

I'm sorry Steve, what you overlook is that a magazine subscription is no different from any other long-term product supply contract. The supplier can't make unilateral changes to the product halfway the contract period without:

a) Informing the purchaser well in advance of the product change coming into effect,

b) Giving the purchaser the opportunity to cancel the contract because of the product change with no questions asked,

and,

c) Settling any outstanding or advance payments with those customers who decide to cancel their contract prematurely.

Shipping the new product without items a) to c) above is nothing else than a breach of contract as the customer doesn't receive the product that was agreed on.

The change from Palmtop Magazine to Palmtop User isn't a simple name change. The editorial policy and content has changed to such an extent that Palmtop User is a completely new magazine. It was therefore *mandatory* for Palmtop Publications to give prior notice of the demise of Palmtop Magazine and the launch of the new Palmtop User. Any subscriber who disagrees with the change of magazine has the right to cancel his/her subscription and claim the money for issues of Palmtop Magazine that won't appear. They can even ship their copy of Palmtop User back to Palmtop Publications and claim the shipping costs.

<< there are still 39 pages of direct relevance to Psion/Nokia owners, plus we think that if you read the rest with an open mind then you'll find most of that interesting too >>

The number of pages of EPOC related content is immaterial. Saying that you get an x-number of pages on PalmOS and PocketPC for free doesn't cut any ice. What counts is that the magazine is no longer the magazine people subscribed to.

And it's a bit risky to talk about open minds. Somebody who has his/her reasons to disagree with the change to Palmtop User could interpret the above as "You've no reason to complain and are a small minded person when you do". Being open minded when it comes to handheld computers doesn't imply that you're interested in (say) PalmOS devices. Could very well be that PalmOS doesn't appeal - leaves you icy cold. What reading time you have is then better spend on articles about handheld computer hardware, software and peripherals that do interest you.

<< There just isn't enough happening in the Symbian world, let alone the ER5 world alone, to make a magazine worthwhile - we'd have to keep repeating ourselves! >>

It may not be as easy as it was, but there's sufficient material to fill the magazine. Colly Myers resigned from Symbian in February - contact the man and persuade him to look back on his years at Psion and Symbian. Some subjects are well worth revisiting. Think of the use of a mobile phone in combination with a Psion. New phones have appeared on the market with new features and functions so that it's well worth updating the article of Palmtop Magazine no. 21. Ever done a performance test on CF cards?

No problem...

The Siemens M50 isn't IRDa either...

I'm using a serial cable to connect it to my netBook.

You may be right, I've yet to try...

The email downloads are over so quickly that I haven't had anyone call me while it's in progress yet.

This may not come as a surprise to you Itamar: I recommend the T39m or the T68i. According to my experience, both work excellent with the 5mx (and should do the same with the S7) using GSM or GPRS. Softwarewise the two are almost identical - besides the superior T68i screen of course.

As you may have noted from postings lately, the real problems stem from operator shortcomings. But if you settle for one of the T phones, see to it that you get it upgraded with the latest sw version - Release 4.something - as the early ones showed unstable GPRS comm behaviour.

Noticed that I forgot to mention Assistant by Mario Collado in my response to the app poll. Its a superb support sw that does a lot of useful things in one well written package. Could  not do without it.

Best regards,

Jan G

Maybe the simplest answer already has been posted: when you close a GPRS session on the T39, you should find that the phone prompts a "session summary" on its screen with info on the volume of data sent and received. This screen does obviously not appear if you've been connecting via GSM.

Subject: Dream app: predictive text-generator for S5

Good as the 5/5mx's keyboard is, anything that can push up typing speeds would be very valuable for someone like me who uses it for a lot of writing. One piece of software that I'd love to see would be a program to generate text predictively. (That is, after typing a few characters of a word, the program would offer a choice of word-completions.)

It wouldn't have to be a fully fledged word-processor, if it could just churn out reams of correctly spelled text, to be copied into Word.

From time to time I measure my own typing speed on the 5mx: I bash away for 3 minutes, either making up a stream-of-consciousness text or copying a paragraph from a newspaper. I don't backtrack to correct errors, just rush on.

The number of words of raw text I produce can be as much as 140 when I'm making the text up - I take care to keep the words short ...  About 13% are mistyped. So the net rate is about 40 correctly typed words / minute. But as I said, that's on a good day.

When copying text, I might hit 100 - 110 raw words /min, with maybe 17% errors, resulting in about 30 correct words/min.

This compares with a speed on a full-size keyboard of about 55 wpm.

The slower speed of the Psion keyboard isn't a real problem, because my writing speed is mostly limited by my thinking time. Still, anything that speeded up typing would be a boon.

I got excited recently by a small piece of freeware or shareware (I've completely forgotten what it was) that offered predictive text-generation as a bonus. But it turned out that it would only complete words that had been explicitly entered into its own dictionary, so it wasn't relevant to general writing.

Just a pipe-dream ...

Chris
