Just to note that, of course, any subscriber who genuinely feels hard done by has only to contact Palmtop Pubs. and complain, to receive a refund of outstanding monies - although I believe that out of tens of thousands of readers, only about a dozen have actually done this. This very low complaint rate, plus the HUGE number of positive comments (see the web

Hi Chris,
Have you tried my program ExAb. It expands the set of shortcuts that you define yourself "on the fly". You still need a hotkey though, I'm afraid it won't be easy under EPOC to have a program listening in the background to series of keytaps all the time.
You can find ExAb at the below website. Although shareware, you can try a virtually unlimited version indefinitely (I know, I'm too good..;-)

Registering ExAb will motivate me to continue support of my programs. ___________________________________

Subject: S7 screen callibration
Hi All!
Been enjoying the new look digest - thanks for continuing it.
Anyone know why I need to keep recallibrating my S7 screen for pen input? I started having to do this a few months ago, and now it seems I'm having to do it every day. The pen can be wildly off screen location (by as much as 1 - 1.5cm).
The backup battery is reported as 'good', and the main battery is charged. I hope it's not a sign of impending screen cable failure ON THE 7!!
Top uses:
1. Agenda (memory)
2. Data (phone numbers/addresses)
3. Crontab (alarms)
4. Word (letters/notes)
5. Sheet (general number crunching)

Subject: wireless working
Dear all
I wonder if you can help me with this little quandry. I live on a houseboat where I have a PC, very old laptop and a Psion or two. There isn't much space, so I have started to rent a shed on the nearby island. This has electricity but no phone line. The shed is about 150 metres from my boat, and I would like to put my PC in there, out of the way, but I am trying to figure out a way of getting internet connection from there to keep software up to date etc. I could run a telephone cable through the trees to the shed, but this seems a bit dramatic. I can use my land line digital DECT cordless phone in the shed OK - is there any way of using a normal modem with it? I wonder if anyone sells those old acoustic modems? Would that work over a cordless phone? Another option might be some new wireless technology - what about this bluetooth thing? Is it cost effective for a little home computer? A final thought might be running a network cable between the two. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I saw that in PalmTop. But I see nothing to indicate that the 90 can be connected to a modem, No mention of a browser or e-mail capability. I suspect all that went away when the phone capability was removed.

Subject: Mako Battery Report
Before leaving on my Canadian bicycle trip I backed up my Mako, let it run down, charged it all night, removed the charger in the morning just before departing. Sixteen days later I returned to find the Mako dead. Plugged in the charger, hit the Esc key and got a hard reset. After a full charge I did a restore.
I took my trusty 5ive with me on the trip, using it many times each day to enter info on my photos, diary, banking, bike app, and automatically copied a zipped C drive to the D drive during each night. At the end of 16 days I still showed about 50% usage left on the replaceable alkaline batteries.
Some will say I could have brought the Mako charger with me. But I don't want to have to carry any "extra" items with me on a bike. Every extra ounce must be carried up each and every mountain.
I like the Mako but it sure has a shitty battery system.

Subject: netBook connection to POP3 and Webmail
Greetings All
I'm a 'new' psioneerer (armed with a netBook (build 158)) and I would like to retrieve my mail from Hotmail (MSN) and also the new Mac Mail (pronounced dot Mac) which as a web mail facility I thoroughly recommend.
I've managed to sort myself out with my BTinternet POP3 account and can send and retrieve from that but so far, I can't manage to retrieve from either my hotmail or .mac IMAP accounts.
Can anyone explain what settings I need for those to work?
Secondly, I have a Nokia 6210 and although I can (if patient) retrieve email from btinternet via IR link, I can't manage to send or retrieve SMS. Is there a good reason for this or is it simple that I'm doing something wrong?
This is the first time that I have used the EpocDigest so would really appreciate someone taking the trouble to give me the benefit of their greater email/communication knowledge and
experience.

Subject: Saving web pages in Web
Hello group,
Not only is Web not very good in saving web pages a long with their accompanying pictures, it also has another problem, at least on my Psion. When I want to save a page, it needs to reload the page from the Internet! i would imagine it has the page in its cache! This provokes two problems:
1. If it is a big page it costs me a lot of download time, not only with the mobile phone, but also with the Travel Modem.
2. It needs to load the directory structure of my CF card to present the 'Save as' dialogue. This costs time. As you know from my previous posts, this provokes the TM to disconnect. If I want to save the page, I have to reconnect, which costs a lot (first minute costs EUR 0,11 , the others cost EUR 0,02).
Do I miss something here? Why can't it save the page from its cache?
Yours truly,

Subject: Re: Bluetooth driver
Dear Darryl,
<< If I remember correctly the next Revo model (odin?) Psion was developing with Motorola was to have been Bluetooth >>
Memory fails you, I'm afraid. The Odin joint development project with Motorola would have resulted in model to take the place of Series 5mx. Psion itself was working on a Revo with Bluetooth but the project was stopped when Psion decided to withdraw from the consumer market.
<< Anyone know anyone at Psion to contact re getting hold of the drivers, as presumably they were already written. Unless of course it was to have run ER6 and not ER5 >>
There's the possibility that the 'Bluetooth Revo' would have run Symbian OS 6 as it would ensure compatibility with the 'Odin' model. But when the driver would have been for EPOC Release 5 there's still the problem that it's a driver for internal hardware. Not for external Bluetooth adapters in CF or PC-Card format. Meaning that the driver needs to be supplied as source code for an interested developer to work on. Note that licensing issues could be a complicating factor.

Subject: Route Planner and Street Planner
I've just sold my 5mx which had both Route Planner and Street Planner 99 installed. I've never bothered re-installing them on my S7 but now, with no access to using these programs anymore due to no longer owning the 5mx, I'm thinking of doing so. I know these old programs were later updated a bit with a "Millenium" tag attached to the name but I'm curious to know the following:
1 Do either the old original versions or the "Millenium" equivelants run in colour and full screen mode on the S7? If so, what is the use of colour like?
2 What are the differences between the old and newer versions of the program?
3 Presumably even the newer "Millenium" version has to be installed directly from the CD-ROM or does it actually exist as a SIS file for easy on-board installation directly on the Psion?
Someone on the digest mentioned recently it did but I thought that all Palmtop BV (aka Tom Tom) software required the installation to be carried out from the CD-ROM only.

Hi all,
I seem to recall that an Oxford dictionary of some sort and, if I remember correctly, also a Grolier encyclopedia were once available online in Tomeraider format. Does anyone know if these are still available for download somewhere? Were they freeware? If so, and if it's not too much trouble, could someone please email the files to me? If they're available as shareware or commercially please provide an URL!
Thanks...

Subject: Palmtop Magazine
Hello all.
I received my first Palmtop User Mag. in the mail. Since I didn't subscribe to it, I was a bit surprised but I found out that they sent it to me free because the cover was slightly bent and therefore "damaged."
But anyways, I have been reading both sides of the discussion about this "new" magazine. First and foremost, I agree that there is just not enough EPOC/Symbian material. For every one mention of Psion, there were 50 mentions of Windows and Palm. (OK, maybe I'm exagerrating, but that was the impression I got)
I agree with Steve that we all should look at other platforms with an open mind. However, as a devout Psion user, I was utterly dismayed by the lack of EPOC material. If I wasn't looking for Psion in the magazine, I wouldn't have found it. Yes, I do admit, reading about Sony's new Clie was interesting, but I do also admit that reading countless pages about Palm and PocketPC programs was not interesting. In fact, it was quite boring- reading something that had no revelance to me. I even skipped over the programs for the Nokia communicator and S5, since I own a Revo.
But, this is just my 10 cents worth, and thanks to all you at palmtop user who sent me a "damaged" copy for free.
Sincerely,
Caspar

Thomas,
One use that I know of is for protecting customized programs. There is a developer in Singapore who wrote a life insurance program for agents. To prevent an insurance company from buying one set then copying the program onto many Psions, he ties in the unique ID on each machine to a specific copy of the program.
He sells the program on a memory disk (an SSD card for the old S3 and the CF card for the S5). When you initially load it into a Psion, the program searches for the unique ID, tags the program with the ID. When you try to use the memory card to copy the program onto a different Psion, it will not execute.

Darryl,
I checked the SonyEricsson website (try Asia Pacific site) and the Technical Data section of the User's Manual does state that the R520 is IrDa capable and is fax capable - both Class 1 and 2, Group III (9600 kbps).
Could it be a software issue with your program on the Psion?
The very old Ericsson phones - even those that used the DI-27 IrDa module - could talk to the Psion so it seems quite odd if the newer phones do not.
Hope this helps.

Owen,
For people who do a lot of travelling and want to use and access only one email account, there is the Gric network. If your ISP is a member of Gric, you register your account. Then you are given a whole database of local numbers in the major cities in each country. Your access to the internet then becomes a local call with usage billed to your single account.
In Norway, the member ISP is Multinet AS.
You might want to check out their website at www.gric.com. There are over 300 ISP's in this network all over the world.

There is a new version of Phoneman Pro on their website - "PhoneMan298F". This one incorporates the beta plug-ins and now allows reading from and writing to the extended phonebooks of Nokia phones.
The plug-in I used for my 8310 before this new release was identified as "Nokia71xx111F". The website says this has now been integrated into "PhoneMan298F". So it seems like you can now use the new release for your 7110.
I am now using 298F and it is working very, very well. No problems.
