Subject: NETPAD - FINAL PART
Hi Guys,
It seems that I should write something about IP (Ingress Protection) ratings.
I don't have my reference resources with me here in Pretoria, but I'll try to be as accurate as possible. An IP rating is not a manufacturer's specification. It is a rating awarded after a machine has been tested (sometimes to destruction) against an international engineering standard. If a machine is awarded an IP rating of 67 (one of the highest) then it means that it WILL prevent an ingress of fine dust particles, and it WILL prevent the ingress of fluids after temporary immersion to a depth of 1,5m. It is not necessary for me to go swimming with the (very expensive) machine to prove it. :-)
To more interesting things - the netpad in daily use.
The netpad is not a device that you're going to slip into your shirt, or even your jacket, pocket. It weighs just over half a kilogram and is somewhat bulkier than the S5mx. However, it takes up little room in my briefcase and, during the trade expo I'm attending, I have been carrying it in my hand when I go walkabout. I have used it to make notes about the products on exhibition, in Jotter, as well as the notes for this report. It's nice to be able to stop for refreshments without having to worry about beer or coffee slopping over it. (Err, no Psionet, it hasn't happened yet.)
I have found that it is easiest to use the netpad in portrait mode when standing but, unfortunately, all of the ER 5 apps open in landscape mode only. Now, I know that the netpad is intended to run bespoke apps, but it would have been useful if Psion Teklogix had included a notetaking app that opens in portrait mode. That said, it is no great problem to type notes with PsiBoard in portrait mode and then turn the screen if you want to read them.
The control and function keys on PsiBoard are "sticky" so key-shortcuts are not a problem - even Shift+Ctrl+Fn+S for a screenshot. Pressing Shift brings up caps and pressing it again changes the choice of special characters on the keys. There is also a Caps key. PsiBoard can be moved around the screen by dragging the title bar. It can be sent to the background or always kept "on top". Re-sizing the keyboard in portrait mode gives you very elongated keys.
I found that using most of the standard ER 5 apps with only the pen and PsiBoard was pretty straightforward. However, I think that Psion Teklogix should provide the option of a plug-in keyboard for entry of longer texts. For instance, although I kept the notes for this report on the netpad, I wrote the report itself on the netBook. I can foresee that a field worker would be happy with PsiBoard in the field but that, at the end of the day, perhaps when a report on the data collected has to be sent to head office, it would be a bit fatiguing to tap out 2 000 words or so on the screen. The angle at which the netpad is held in the docking station almost implies the presence of a keyboard at its base. Interestingly, the netpad's footprint is almost exactly the same as the netBook's keyboard. Does that get the design juices going? I see a neat little unit with... let me not get into that.
Although the netpad has a slightly faster processor than the netBook (206 Mhz StrongArm) I noticed no speed difference - both machines are very fast. I opened a few web pages with Opera and downloaded and sent e-mails - smooth as silk.
The netpad is a very usable machine. It can give you all of the functionality and power of the ER 5 app suite in an extremely robust package. Unlike the netBook, it could be carried in a holster on your belt or in an overall pocket. But you would have to have very deep pockets - the money kind. In South Africa it sells for the rough equivalent of USD 2 000. If you're in the kind of business that keeps you outdoors most of the day, or if you're sailing in rough seas, or if you're climbing a mountain in a snowstorm, this one's for you.
Maybe it's a sign of a revival - in the July 2002 edition of Pen Computing magazine, there's a full page colour advert for the netpad. Haven't seen something like that in a US magazine for years.
I hope you've found this informative, and that it's restored your faith in the future of Psion somewhat. I still have the machine for a few days so if there's something I haven't commented on, please ask. I haven't gone into great detail about the spec because you can download it, in PDF format, from the Psion Teklogix homepage.
My thanks to Psionet for allowing me to play with their machine - it was and is a great experience. That said, I must affirm that I have no connection to Psionet whatsoever, other than as a very satisfied customer.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Jan,
Yes, you can safely move these to the D drive. If there are apps you never plan to uninstall you can even delete them without issue. Alternatively, if you are happy to do manual uninstalls you can delete all of them.

Hi there,
Thomas F.VAN DER ZIJDEN, in the UK area codes are not required within the area concerned with land-lines but with mobiles . . . I don't know but I suspect they are.
As regards spammers harvesting addresses, a ZIP file should be impervious to their engines, especially an encrypted ZIP file with the password published (freely) on the website. Perhaps the Psioneers who run this digest should ask if we can all unZIP stuff.
For Jan R Gustafsson re SIS files: I delete them as some of them will delete files (OPX usually) I need for other programs on my 5mx but I have a fairly large D drive and many programs. If you need those SIS files there is no reason not to store them on the D drive; if any need to be on the C drive then move them as needed. I've had less trouble doing manual deletes and using OPXScan (Ralph Sprenger) than I had before.
For UK news (not NG news; Google for that) I find that "Snowmail" from Channel 4 is best for me. Also (like BBC news) it is in plain text rather than HTML - I'm told that I should read HTML news on the desktop. Doesn't that defeat the object?
Good luck,
Phil.

-----------
Kevin,
I would have gladly paid £400 for a "5mx(c) "Professional" a few months ago; as it was I paid almost as much for two new 5mx's. That said, I don't find myself missing a colour screen too much (my last PDA had a TFT colour screen) or a built in modem as the IR Travel modem works great for email and the occasional fax. BTW, as Rolf (I think) pointed out sometime earlier: Psion *had* developed a significantly upgraded and more modern colour-screened unit, somewhat similar to the unit you've described, but could not bring it to market once Motorola, who had co-developed it with them, had pulled out of their ill-fated joint venture. I think it was more Motorola's decision then it ever was Psion's that really killed off the chance for a "5mx(c) "Professional". Still Psion gets all the blame, I guess.
Right now I'd be happy if it were possible to change the reflective backing in my 5mx's screen to the kind found in the Revo, Palm V etc.

Well, it had to happen , Itamar's followup to the UPS5Digest has apparently bitten the dust , however before taking any action , can anyone of you receiving this email find out what actually happened and mail the result to some key subscribers to the old digests ( UPS5 and EPOC ) as well as me
If action is taken , I think we should move to person2person email + posts on the Psion section of PDAStreet (can someone set up a mail gateway ? )
Another option is to create a virtual digest on the comp.sys.psion.* usenet groups by including a [ EPOCDIGEST VI ] marker in the subject field , rather than trying ( again ! ) to create a mailing list

Yes, Contacts supports the vCard standard...
(I've used it to beam contacts from my netBook to several Palms)
Make certain that the machines are CLOSE to each other before trying.
You might also try to beam to other machines, or even do an IRDa print (If you have an IRDa enabled printer) just to test the Mako's IRDa port...
Personally, I'd blame the HP...

What happens here is that it's the Web browser which have been associated with text files.
Sometimes, if it's done with MIME, it can change again just by opening and closing the CF slot...

Jan,
The SIS files are used by the Add/Remove utility and moving them around will probably screw this up. You can of course always delete applications manually in which case go ahead but don't blame me if it goes wrong! 80)
As for why the SIS files would be on a different drive to the installed application I have no idea except that perhaps applications installed to the D drive also put an SIS file onto the C drive.

Caspar,
>I had trouble beaming my contacts (on a Mako) to a friend of mine who has a PocketPC Journada. I have installed PlBeam, but the contacts still doesn't send.
plBeam is only active for sending files from the system screen or by firing up the plBeam application from the extras bar. plBeam implements the IrOBEX protocol for infrared filetransfers. I hope you didn't try to send the C:\System\Data\Contacts.cdb file to the poor Journada. The contents of the file is not directly understood by PocketPC software.
>I thought that Contacts supported the VCard standard that allowed cross platform beaming.
vCard is a file format, pure ASCII, with tags to denote the fields of a contact record. The Contacts application of your EPOC machine is able to create and read files with multiple records. This is performed by the import/export functions in the file menu. You can use plBeam to send such an exported file to an external device. (I had to do some editing of the file on the PC to get it to work on my Palm but I finally succeded.) I dont't know whether PocketPC accepts such a
multiple Record vCard file for input.
Contacts can beam single records via IrOBEX (without the help of plBeam!) to other devices. It accepts vCards via infrared as well. Maybe you have to send each and every record seperately
to the Journada, but my advice would be to export your complete database from the Contacts application and use plBeam to transmit the resulting file. What to do with it on the Journada
depends on the options of this machine which I do not know.

You bet I'd pay up UKP400 for a '5mx(c)' with a colour TFT LCD screen! In fact I'd pay that even if it didn't have Bluetooth or a modem. 64MB would be nice, but 32MB would be fine.
To be honest, surely there couldn't be too much involved technically in replacing the 5mx B&W screen with a colour one. The 7/Netbook already run a colour OS. Shame Psion or another company can't step in and produce these slightly modified machines for what seems like a relatively small outlay, given the potential market. They'd crush the competition.
As a side note readers may like to know that Expansys now have new 5mx's in stock, fresh in from the recent (last?) batch made. They're going for just $284, which is pretty good value, considering 2nd hand units on ebay are going for a similar figure. I ordered one to go with my 5 and 7... trying to prolong my time with these great machines until something better emerges. Nothing seems to be on the horizon.

There's no such thing as *the* init string. The contents of an init string depend on the type of connection you want to make. A general purpose Psion modem definition for the S45 is the one mentioned below. But it's not necessarily the one you need for your purpose.
Modem tab:
- Name : Siemens S45
- Speed : 115200 bps
- Connect via : Infrared
- Fax class : 1
Initialisation tab:
- Init. (reset) string : AT&F
- Data init. string : AT\Q1
- Fax init. string : Leave empty
Advanced tab:
- Flow Control : Software (Xon/Xoff)
- Terminal detect (DSR/DTR) : Unchecked
- Carrier detect (DCD) : Unchecked
- Modem type : Mobile

Subject: Re: Fax Init String
Dear Gary,
<< Is there any difference between the Fax Init String "AT+FCLASS=2" amd "ATS0=2" which is what I programmed into my settings in my Revo? >>
The S0 register determines whether the faxmodem will answer an incoming call automatically and, if yes, after how many rings it will go on line. S0=0 means that auto-answer is off and S0=2 that the faxmodem will answer after the phone has rung twice. It's a setting you don't need to use at all. Nor do you need to do something with the +FCLASS command. It's all taken care of by the Psion.
Set the "Fax class" entry to "Auto" in the modem definition (System Screen -» Control Panel -» Modems) and the Psion finds out for itself which fax class(es) your faxmodem or mobile phone supports. It sends the AT+FCLASS=? enquiry to the faxmodem/phone and picks the highest class that's reported. When this is fax class 2, the Psion will send the AT+FCLASS=2 command as one of the steps in preparation of sending a fax message. Use "2" as fax class setting in the modem definition and the Psion doesn't need to check the fax capability of the phone. Meaning it skips the AT+FCLASS=? enquiry step.
When the Psion needs to be ready to receive a fax message you use the "Wait for fax call" function in Email (Menu -» Transfer -» Fax -» Wait for fax call). The Psion then sends the appropriate S0=x and +FCLASS=y
commands to the faxmodem/phone to activate its auto-answer function using the right fax class.

Psion doesn't make LCD screens, it buys them from specialist manufacturers. Compare the 5mx's screen with greyscale screens of the same spec used by other handheld computer suppliers and it's one of the best. There are better greyscale screens available from LCD manufacturers but these are horribly expensive. And the current screen is already the single most expensive component of a 5mx.

Also like Itamar I want to ensure you that the Digest is alive and well (just look at the number of subscribers and postings).

Answer to: All
Re. S7 bug ? - When I open my S7 the next day first it does not relate to my setting of password once a day. When I close it again and switch it on again it will ask for my password. Did anyone experience the same ? Jan Walker, thanks for the remark about entering the password.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. Color Magic - Let me refrase it. It is unfair they did not warn you in advance that a soft reset would be required, blocking the machine to do anything else and thereby forcing the user to loose any data that were open and not saved. In the meantime I am a happy registered user of the program, and I am quite prepared to pay for programs I do use.

Re. SPAM - See my other message, the email addresses have been changed on the website of the digests.
Answer to: David Lir
Re. RMRZip - Save the zip files in the "Standard setting" and you will be able to open it with Winzip too. I don't know which of the two is better, I don't know the other one and registered RMRZip a while ago.
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re. Dream 5MX - I would pay for the new one, like many of us. Unfortunately Psion are neither listening nor interested.

That depends. If my MC218 died tomorrow, I would have to get a replacement right away, so I'd look for a new or second hand MC218 or 5mx, but that's because I'm cruising and living off (meagre) savings and won't have any income until some time this autumn. (How's that for a run on sentence...?) If the colour model was on the market and I was working and earning money, I'd go for the all singing all dancing new toy. No doubt about it!
I might in fact buy a S7, NetBook or even netpad this winter if I manage to find a reasonably well paying job, but I'd prefer a colour 5mx. BTW, I have absolutely no use for a built-in modem. I'd prefer two CF slots where at least one was full spec and could be used with modems, external hard drives, CD-roms, network cards etc. Maybe, if it supported network cards, that would provide a better and faster way of connecting to my Toshiba than PsiWin? Anyone here have experience with this? networking a NetBook with their home computer for file transfers etc. rather than a big office network?
BTW, I don't really think the MC218 / 5mx screen is as bad as some people say, but then I use the backlight most of the time and always have freshly charged NiMh's available. However, I would like colour which would be great for using the machine as a chart plotter (Does anyone know if PsiNMEA supports colour on the S7/NetBook/netpad?).
I'd also like to be able to keep a portable photo album on a palmtop. For this reason, I'd like a bit more than 256 colours. I'd also prefer standard penlight cells so that one could pick up a pack of Duracells in an emergency, just like my MC218. My early bronze age HP200LX (DOS palmtop) has a built in charging circuit and can use either alkalines or NiCd/NiMh's. It's about the same size as the 5(mx).
In my not so humble opinion, the main thing that's wrong with the Revo\Mako is that it's missing a little round cover with a coin slot to open on one end of the machine so that the NiMh's can be user replaced when they are dead. In my experience, NiMh's seldom last more than two years, and for anyone not capable of performing surgery on the machine, that would be the end, as sending it in to have the battery replaced would cost more than the machine is worth.
BTW, I have no problems with my Mako's battery in daily use. I simply switch the Mako off and connect it to the charger every evening before I go to bed, and the machine works fine every day. As I've said before, the most common mistake European Mako owners seem to make is to get a too small power supply. It has to be able to supply AT LEAST 500mA at 6V, or you'll kill your battery. Also, use and charge the machine every day, and if you leave it at home when you go on holiday, put the charger on a timer so the machine gets 30 minutes per day.
To Peter Keene Re: netpad
I may have missed it, but you seem to have omitted the most important part of the netpad saga. What's the PRICE?
If I do decide to buy a netpad, one of its chief functions will be running PsiNMEA with nautical charts. Is it possible to connect a GPS whilst retaining the watertight integrity of the unit, or do you need the docking station to connect stuff to the RS-232? I assume the docking station is not waterproof? Would the RS-232 connector corrode if subjected to salt water spray? Also, does the unit sit securely in the docking station, or is it likely to fall off in the violent motion that can sometimes be encountered in a yacht at sea, or rattle off when the engine is running?
To Rolf Brunsting Re: "EPOC32 Rumour"
Very Well Put! You have mastered the art of gracefully plucking someone off his high horse! I'll happily buy you a banana any time. I'd even buy you a beer! :o)
PS. I ran "scanreg /restore" on the Toshiba, and it _seems_ to have cured my mouse and keyboard problems even though the earliest date available to restore to was after the problems started. Bill Gates moves in mysterious ways...

Thought for the day (Ode to my Toshiba):
I really hate this damn machine, I wish that I could sell it. It never does just what I want, but only what I tell it.

Subject: GPS Receiver
I am looking for inexpensive GPS receiver to connect to my Psion 5MX. Can you advise some quite good and not expensive unit?
And, by the way, are there any maps available for use in Cyprus?
B Rgds,
Alex.
