Subject: PDF magazine file size

In reference to the PDF magazine, conversation within the Digest now seems to be concerned with if readers prefer the magazine to be e-mailed to them or to be downloaded from a website.

From my point of view, an e-mail may be best, but it's the possible size of the file that concerns me.  Bearing in mind that this stage we don't know how many pages the magazine may consist of.

As a point of interest, during the course of my work, I have received some pages of A4 as a PDF file from the printers (as a proof). The file size was 390k for just two A4 pages!

Although a PDF magazine is a great idea, do we want such a large download? Even if the file is zipped, the file is still likely to very large. Also all recipients of the PDF magazine would need an Acrobat reader.

Stephanie,

What an excellent idea!  A colour screen sounds just the thing.

Will it also overcome the dreaded screencable problem?

I'd consider getting one.

BTW the URL you gave did not work.  Did you mean

Subject: Area codes / 08-numbers / POP-blocks / SMS

Hello group,

Rolf, thank you for your re-explication on the matter of area codes. Sorry, I did misunderstand you.

08-numbers:

Hi Jack, sorry, but I am more the expert on the same situation in The Netherlands. ;-)

When in the UK I use my French Freesurf account and according to Freesurf I have to dial up in 0845 1264001 . Also a 08-number... I'd go for the Virgin Net number if I where to use a British T-mobile phone.

POP-blocks:

I was recently informed by a Dutch Tiscali subscriber that Tiscali blocked access to its POP-server by non-Tiscali IP addresses, effectively obliging their clients to use Tiscali's dialup numbers.

This effectively blocks:

- ADSL/cable subscribers who want to check the Tiscali mail from their parents's address (happened to this client, his parents asked him to check their e-mail and summarise the contents).

- Psioneers who want to check their e-mail when abroad. Dialling in into Tiscali NL is a bit expensive and some Dutch ISP's use 06760 telephone numbers which are not accessible from a foreign country.

- GPRS-users.

Bad luck for the first guy, but it becomes harder and harder for Psioneers to use the 'Internet without frontiers'. Yes, webmail exists, but that is not very Psion/mobile friendly.

Did you already experience troubles, Rolf?

By the way, 12Move and Uwnet have the same policy nowadays.

Re: SMS

Rolf wrote about my troubles with my telco which charges free SMS-es:

"Better check the conditions of supply as they define what's free of charge and

what's billed. Opinions don't count in cases like this.

"

Agreed! Here is a short summary of the matter:

1. With an earlier bill I noticed that my foreign SMS-s were not in the 'SMS' chapter, but in the 'Phone calls from foreign countries' chapter of the bill. I enquired why this was the case and the customers service replied:

"All actions which you perform with your phone while in a foreign country are billed by the foreign operator. We have absolutely no insight in it, we forward what they say us to forward. We cannot do _anything_ about it! They decide what to charge you."

For a normal customer, this sounds logical.

2. SFR sent me an SMS 'Send free SMS between June 25th and August, 31th every evening between 7 and 8pm (...) see sfr.com for details.

3. As I agree with Rolfs statement, I checked out www.sfr.com carefully and found out that their offer was valid to all subscribers of networks which had a roaming agreement with SFR and which were not on SFR's opt-out list. Ben was not on it (Vodafone NL WAS by the way, as the only Dutch operator). 4. I went wild with Phoneman ;-)

5. I received a bill with all of these SMS-es.

6. I asked an explanation to Ben's customer service. I still don't have a formal answer, only opinions of their employees: "You WILL have to pay, anyway!"

7. I asked an explanation to SFR and received a written (euh... well... e-mail) confirmation that Ben definitely had this deal with SFR. (I could continue with some juicy details. One of Ben's operators read SFR's website to me... stating that it said that Ben did not cooperate with this deal... but it was in French... and clearly I was too stupid to understand French...anyway, ramble, ramble...).

8. Keep in mind, that in '1' Ben said that the foreign operator decided the costs. SFR is clear on the matter: those SMS-es are free.

9. My conclusion: I have fulfilled my duty as a good consumer to be well informed. Even when this deal does not exist (and I am quite sure it

exists) the matter is not between me and my telco, but between them and SFR. Better yet: most consumers do not even do this and they will not even notice they pay their 'free' SMS, because they are only on the internet specification. On the paper, they are grouped under 'foreign calls'.

Technical detail: Ben (my telco) informed me that foreign SMS-es were charged in two parts on my specification. 17ct to the message centre and 17ct to the phone you actually sent it to. On this specific bill the first part is not present. Therefore, there is something special with these SMS-es. I am inclined to believe SFR's story that they have a deal with Ben.

And no... I could not use SFR's message centre. The SMS-es did not arrive, because its message centre is blocked against foreign users.

Pfff... long story. Sorry, but it is a bit on topic, because it is likely that Psioneers have used this offer as well (they have phoneman and they are usually more informed about telecoms matters than the general public).

Now for the questions:

1. Are there any other fellow Psioneers who used this offer from SFR and who got charged anyway?

2. Are there any other fellow Psioneers who used this offer and DID get their SMS for free? If that is the case, than I have a proove that apparently this deal existed between SFR and _your_ telco.

3. With the risk of opening an OT discussion: I would appreciate your general opinions on whether I missed something here or not. It is better to receive it from you than from my telco. ;-) (You can mail it off-list of course).

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden

<<Then, re: the "Dream 5mx", I have recently asked POD (see www.podltd.com) whether they could replace the original B/W screen with a colour one: the answer (from Kenton Douglas) was that  they were actually considering doing so within the next 3-6 months...a new, more legible

screen for my faithful 5mx. Another (cheaper) option

could be a B/W screen like the Revo's.  What about organising a poll between us, to check the "potential market" for thePOD people (price level, quantities, after-sales,...), so that they are

encouraged to start the renewal operation ?>>

I think perhaps Stephane is referring to D&G PDA Upgrades (?)  They seem to have a superb reputation and, if THEY offer a color screen or Revo quality screen upgrade for the 5mx then I will take two today!

Subject: Re; time offset on EPOC

Hi there,

There's been many entries on the digest about the time offset not being applied.

I downloaded a UniversalTime patch for Java (from the EPOC Developer site, if I remember correctly) as when I set up an applet to display the time it showed as GMT not "proper" time.  In fact, when I checked the Java system settings it shows user.timezone as GMT.

I tried the patch and it certainly displays the "correct" time, but this will only apply to Java programs that are written with a reference to the patch code included so I don't think that it could be applied to existing programs - although it might be possible to set the patch to run in the background; perhaps someone with more EPOC/Java knowledge could help here?

All the best,

Hi Simon,

I use Orange's email service which includes free SMS notification of incoming emails. You can sign up at www.orange.net and certainly at the moment it's free.

I see that you use Bigfoot for your email - once you've set up the Orange account you can then set up Bigfoot to send a copy of all your emails to the Orange account as well as your normal email account. I download via POP3 to my S7 via my ISP's email account and just use the Orange one for the SMS facility.

I would like to add my thanks to Itamar , Michael and the rest of the team for continuing, and IMHO improving, the digest.

Those who want to sign up to have it mailed can, and those who just wish to download it in their own time, or even look back at past issues can visit the website.  Yahoo Groups do it this way and it works very well!

Subject: X-Link Review

Has anyone done a review of the application X-Link by Eric Sebban?  Any

views in general?  It was pure chance that I stumbled across it and was

surprised that it had slipped under my personal Psion-spotting radar,

going through 3 complete revisions since the end of May!  This is where

a Fanzine could be a really cool way of covering things that don't make

it to Usenet and get left behind with paper-based mags.

I was having a play around with this and really like the look of the

program.  It's created by Eric Sebban (who also created DCP, Smallbase

etc) and seems like a really powerful tool, allowing the creation of

projects to link all sorts of related information types - some linked

into the built-in apps.  It's a powerful interface and very flexible, a

couple of things struck me about the application.

The first thing was  that this is the application that Notepad Deluxe

COULD have been if it had continued development.  This was my standard

application for work-related tasks for a long time but development just

seemed to crash and burn, with the website being stuck in a time warp

back in 1999.  It wasn't even a case of "If it ain't broke.." it just

seemed to die.  It's clear though that this leaves NotePad for dead in

terms of functionality.  I think my way of working with my Psion has

changed now, so I am not totally sure that this appraoch fits in my way

of working.

The second thing that struck me looking at the icons is that -- (and

this is really trivial) this guy has been lucky enough to use BeOS!

Check out http://corisoft.free.fr for more info on the application.

Dream 5mx

Easy, everything the new sony clié nr70v has: colourscreen, proper mp3, camera, usb, hwr.

Great thing! I would have bought one if it wouldn't miss almost everything I love on my 5mx: proper keyboard, cf card slot (not the crap memorystick), word, sheet, data - all those wonderful complex and stable inbuilt and extra apps...

Bluetooth is the other thing I would like. I have read, that there are now several other older pda's that can be upgraded (Palm and Handspring). I know that there are some bt cards that have the exact size of a cf card and therefore allow the cf card slot to get closed. If palm and windows can add bluetooth - why not epoc?

____________________________

POD upgrade - count me in

A colourscreen on my 5mx, absolutely brilliant great fantastic thrilling wonderful - yes, yes, yes, I want one!!! The only doubts I ever had about my psion were caused by the absence of a colourscreen. I have often thought of buying something else, a jornada, zaurus, palm, handspring or a smartphone like Nokia's, the treo or magcom but in the end I stuck with my 5mx with the sigh "if it only had a colourscreen". Now it seems my dreams will come true.

Isn't there something else that the guys at POD can do about our wishlists? Bluetooth or USB would be nice. My willingness to spend a lot on those features is a bit limited but if it isn't too much technical trouble and so to get for a reasonable price, I would really like it.

What else can they do - and what would we like them to do?

Solar Power

I don't think that there is a big demand for an inbuilt solar power charger among psion users. I, for one, get very uncomfortable with the idea of my 5mx being exposed to the sun for several hours and what that might do to the processor or the batteries. Those who would like such a feature should perhaps better look towards an external charger. Some time ago I did come across a portable device called "Scotty" which was build by German company, I think. A light portable device that could be clipped on a backpack and connected to a portable something which it would load on the go. I doubt that it could generate enough power in what I would call a reasonable timespan but whoever is interested might give it a try.

That's all

<I use my 5mx with my mobile phone (still using the trusty SH888!) on a contract with T-Mobile for all my personal email.  I use various ISPs (Freeserve, BT-click, OneTel, BizOnline, etc.).  The only trouble is, they all have access numbers beginning with 08, which T-Mobile doesn't include in their free minutes allowance, so I have to pay for each data call, even though I have many free minutes left over at the end of each month.  Does anyone know of a 'free' ISPs with whose access number does not begin with '08'?  Or is there any other solution?>

Simon, many thanks for your detailed explanation on the ER5 bug which makes the email date/time stamp incorrect - I'm pleased that I wasn't just imagining it or going ga ga!  Regarding your query, I'm on Freeserve and at one time I used a London STD number for data access on Orange so I could use my inclusive minutes up, just as you want to do.  I no longer need to do this as a while ago Orange changed their data access policy and now allow 08 prefixed numbers within the inclusive minutes quota.  So yes, I'm sure you CAN use an STD number with Freeserve.  Just ask the Freeserve helpdesk or if you can wait a few days I'll try to dig it out the number from one of my old bills (just let me know if you want me to try to find it for you).  I think I've also got a list somewhere of other ISP's STD dial-up numbers.  In any case you are not limited to just 08 prefixes with many ISP's.

<Have just made the jump and bought a Nokia 9210, have been analyzing my usage of the 5mx over the past few weeks, and have come to realize that the 9210 would be far better suited to my requirements. All I need is Agenda, Email, City guides, tiny bit of web browsing, games, (is Shookban available) Database will need to purchase power Data or Small base.  and letter writing not big esays just 200 hundred word reports.>

My thoughts on the 9210 are "they nearly got it right".  But although I love the phone/palmtop integration I don't feel it has the power and versatility of the 5mx.  This of course will be fine for many (and it's great that you are happy with it so do enjoy it!) but I find it a bit limiting.  But at least there is a very good chance of further development (unlike the deceased 5mx) so it does have plenty of potential to go much further.  The biggest single thing Nokia could do to make me happier is to give the thing a decent amount of RAM as although ER6 is a powerful multi-tasking O/S, one cannot really run more than just a small handful of programs simultaneously without memory problems, unlike a 5mx.  Sure, you can always close some down but then this rather negates the point of having a multi-tasking O/S in the first place!  I'm getting more used to the keyboard now (it's not soooo bad really, it's just that anything seems inferior after a 5mx!) and I'm sure we all agree the TFT colour screen is just beautiful.  On the next upgrade I'd like to see more RAM, Bluetooth and a better and more functional ROM (bring back that "print to file" option for starters).  Those things excepted, I like it too :-)  For me though, it has to be just a bit better before it can take the place of my old 5mx.

Subject: NETBOOK ROM / ODIN

Hi Guys,

For Itamar re netBook ROM:

I've mentioned before that I'm not a "techie" Itamar, but my understanding of the advantages of installing the netBook ROM in an S7 is as follows:

1). Because the os is loaded into only one of the two 16M RAM cards of the netBook "ROM" you effectively gain 16M RAM. This means that, if you have already done an upgrade to 32M RAM, you would have a 48M S7. (I think you may also gain the 3MB left by the os.img file which is +/-13M.)

2). Clock speed of the processor would be increased to 191Mhz - same as the netBook.

3). Support for ethernet cards in the PCMCIA slot (see below).

4.) Support for the IMAP4 protocol in Email (see below).

5). The same ROM upgrade path as the netBook. According to the grapevine, build 158 will be debugged and re-released. This would give you, amongst other things, 802.11b WiFi capability (if you want it of course).

As for software, Psionet will provide a netBook CD-ROM as part of the deal. This means that you can install whichever netBook apps that you want on your machine and leave the rest (you could even run the machine with only third-party apps if you wanted to!). Be aware though, that each time you want to change the subset of the app suite on your machine, you will have to do a hard reset and install from scratch.

Usual disclaimers.

For all re ODIN:

There have been some postings recently referring to ODIN as a colour-screened, keyboard machine. I think whoever made this reference is referring to the (probably) fictitious "Series 9" which first appeared on a Norwegian website (in 2000 I think), the address of which I can no longer find. I still have a photograph of this "machine" in my netBook. The giveaway was a colourised Revo ER5 screenshot on a machine that was supposedly a CRYSTAL communicator running Symbian V6.

ODIN was a QUARTZ (Palm) form-factor communicator. There was a photograph of it on the same website, but I never downloaded it as I wasn't interested in Palm-style machines.

Interestingly, in one of the press statements announcing the cancellation of the project, David Levin said that Psion may later seek another partner to complete it. Somehow, I don't think that's going to happen now.

Just a small detail in the grand scheme of things. :-)

IMHO, the sent counters in the 6319i must be overstating matters; and, if not, GPRS may transpire to be more costly than we had thought!  I know I browsed

the first day to experiment, as I said recently, but I *sent* very little in tha past week since I connected, just a few e-mails as far as I can recall.

One would think that whatever one is alleged to have received, surely one can only send what one sends! Now, my counter shows 106Kb sent (most unlikely: a handful of single unattached messages), as against 350Kb received (quite possible: because, as I said, I did use Opera at first to try GPRS out; although, I also noticed that a 52Kb inmail Digest seemed to increase my received counter by 64Kb!) Maybe we'll learn more of the data counter's reliability when the bills arrive: let's hope that the service providers are more accurate...

Oh, and yes, I'd ver much like to recceve a copy of the Sheet file you mention, please, especially in the light of the above.  Many thanks......

Went to Comp USA yesterday to see if they have the new Zaurus.  Not only do they have them but they have a full counter of PDAs and another full counter of PDA-Pnone units.

I checked the Z keyboard to see if it is usable.  It is, because of the nature of the keys, and not that much different than the 3a.  You have to thumb type on the unit.

I asked if the Trio was available and he had both the PDA and the PDA phone.

The keyboard, IMO is a bit better than the Z.  They also had the Sony CLIO (I believe it's called) and it looks a lot nicer and usable in person that it

does in the web pictures.

Two conclusions for me.  First - when I can no longer get my Psions repaired and the final unit goes belly up there are usable keyboard machines out there.

Second.  The market is blossoming here in the US.  The guy behind the counter at Comp USA actually understood PDAs and could talk intelligently about operating systems and available applications.

Subject: Init.String - problem solved

Hi, All!

I managed to solve the problem with SMTP sending of e-mail through GPRS connection.

The problem solved by using the foll. init.string:

ATZ\Q1+CGDCONT=1,"IP",cytanet.net

Phone used: SIEMENS S45

I do not know what is the "AT\Q1" - but this small thing solved the SMTP sending.

Rgds,

Alex

Subject: A Haapy User Of The Psion IR Travel Modem

On a different list I found this story about a happy user of the Psion Infrared 56 k Travel Modem

He even reports landline connections using a Nokia 9290 Communicator with it !

Anyone more info on this ?

Sorry , could not let it go ....

B>Psion Travel Modem

by Gary Thomas (pdaddicted x at x aol.com)

Developer: Psion Inc.

Price: $129

BlueTooth devices have finally arrived. Yet, how many of us are fortunate enough to have a spanking new BlueTooth enabled PDA and access to peripherals

that utilize this long awaited technology. Sure we can buy a Bluetooth Card

and upgrade our device, but we may be using our expansion slots for memory cards. There is one technology, however, that we all share, no matter what OS

or PDA we favor -- good old fashioned infrared.

Like many of you, I have owned or experimented with a variety of PDAs. No matter which platform I tried, I have found one infrared enabled accessory to

be invaluable, the PSION Infrared Travel Modem.

The mouse-size modem can be powered by either two double A batteries or an external "wall wart" AC adapter. The modem has worked flawlessly to create a

landline connection for a Psion Revo, Nokia 9290, Palm VII, and Kyocera 6035

as well as for several Windows Powered devices. It has enabled me to keep my

expansion slots available for storage while on line.

Unfortunately, the modem does not support faxing, but my mobile fax needs are

satisfied by Ureach.Com, an integrated messaging service. Although Psion is

no longer marketing PDAs, the modem is described on the Psion Web site (http://www.psion.com/connect/tmmenu.htm) and can be ordered from Buy.Com for

$129 or found on eBay. HP has branded it for use with the Jornada

Subject: PDF documents

<The creator of PDF and PDF+ for EPOC have just release a Beta version (V.8) of a new program, 'PDFprinter'...

It's a printer driver that creates .PDF files of whatever you print. It works with most programs that are able to print.>

Hmm.  Sounds good.  However, as it's described as compatible with ER6 I'm curious as to how it would work with a Nokia 9210 as this machine has no "print to file" option.  Does it add this option to the printer options I wonder?  If so, I'd guess it would also be possible to add the ability to simply print to a text file too?

Subject: Trade Makos for Classic 5

Anyone on the list lusting for the Revo/Mako experience?  I would be willing to trade 2 Makos and kit (only one set of CDs) for one classic 5 in good condition.

One Mako is just fine.  The second is a bit suspect in the battery department - does not last as long as the other on a full charge.

I have put a dab of acrylic paint on both units to keep them straight (one dab my first good machine, two dabs on my second machine with the suspect battery.

I went to the websites and discovered they both use contacts database so will not work on my classic 5.  So will continue to use data for my databases and use Contacts only for e-mail and continue to be sure I have a saved text file of my Contacts database when the 5mx has to be repaired.
