Well, I think Owen meant that an electric timer would be supplying power to the unit once a day for only 30 minutes, just to allow it to top itself up if the Revo circuitry decided that it needed it. After all, once the Revo is plugged in it will charge itself up only as needed. I guess that Owen didn't see the need to leave it drawing AC all day when just a few minutes access to power a day should be enough to keep it topped up - hence the timer. Perhaps I misunderstood his intentions or how the Revo charging circuitry works?

Tim wrote: "EPOC Word if well beyond anything in the PPC/HPC world,"
Actually this in no longer true! A wordprocessor for the HPC (TextMaker) has just been introduced which is MUCH more capable (feature-packed) than EPOC Word, You can read about it here:
http://www.softmaker.de/index,en.htm
It will also be available for the Pocket PC soonish. I guess MS's decision to leave WinCE without a capable WP has finally paid off; there was a gap to be filled and now someone has filled it.
Another point: WordSmith on the Palm is surprisingly good, though not as capable as EPOC word.

Yup, great news, isn't it!?
"It's a printer driver that creates .PDF files of whatever you print. It works with most programs that are able to print. (It had no problem with a 207pages, red and black text and embedded picture EPOC Word document that I have on my netBook)"
It handled both of my large poetry manuscripts and my 600+ note Jotter file with aplomb! :)
"The only problem? ... It only works on ER5 and Nokia 92xx machines, so S5classic, Geofox One and Osaris owners can't use it."
Actually, right now (it's still in beta) PDFPrinter has a few other problems too. I noticed that *all* the font formatting (bold, italics etc) was stripped out in the process of printing to a .pdf file. Also, there are obvious extra blank spaces between letters and words. Hopefully these errors will be corrected before the final release. If so, I'm registering!

"Re. S7 - I thought about it for some time, but than decided that I used my 5Mx mainly in the office and at home, both on a desk, so the S7 was a good decision."
Agreed. If portability is not an issue and the unit will be used almost entirely indoors, away from bright sunlit locations, and the EPOC apps suffice then a 7 or nB is ideal -- this is especially true if the unit is used mainly at a desk. Even indoors though I find I really need a much smaller unit. I'm frequently schlepping the 5mx, a book or two, pens, pencils, paper, my tiny Sony shortwave radio, and a magazine or two all over the house. I'm easily able to throw it all on top of a padded clipboard and head with all my assorted gear from room-to-room. A 2.5 pound 7/nB would essentially squeeze out everything else. As I've said before: I really don't want to have to schlep a bag around - especially in the house! Besides that I think a 7/nB would be too large for me to use comfortably in the washroom! (OK, I admit it. I do compute in the washroom -- doesn't everybody!?) That said if I could afford it I would definitely add a 7/nB to my collection :) Though for me it couldn't take the place of a handheld, nor the place of a laptop, it could come in handy as a sort-of "simplified instant-on sub-notebook". It would certainly be great for writing.

Yup, from what little I know of Submarines I can imagine it could get pretty nightmarish. A short term jaunt in a sub would be great fun though!
"Sorry to hear about your condition."
Thanks for that, Peter. I should be getting a specific diagnosis (though I believe I know what it is already) next week when I see the Geneticist. Just to put this back on topic: the 5mx has been a great help with my condition. There are times when sitting is much too painful or tiring and I am able to lie on the couch with the 5mx and do most or all of my computing, mostly via thumb typing (thank G-d for StickyKeys). Now, it's not perfect since *all* my joints are affected - my wrists and fingers can hurt after a bit; but still it really is helpful to have such a smallish and portable handheld around. Also, I've got a collection of important medical docs (mostly in .html and .pdf formats) I've grabbed from the Web on my CF. I also subscribe to other lists which are related to my specific condition. Anyway, the 5mx with its small size, its onboard keyboard, CF expansion and built-in email capability (I use the IR Travel modem) has been a real boon for me. As a matter of fact I would say that the 5mx has been the best medicine possible, in that it really does improve my quality of life. I can't imagine being without it - that's why I've got the spare!

You *should* be able to open the file on your PC with Acrobat *and* on your Mako or 5mx with PDF (freeware at www.mbrainsoftware.com). I can't imagine anyone would create a Psion PDF zine which couldn't be read easily on a Psion; if PDF can handle the file so can Acrobat.

"I have recently asked POD (see www.podltd.com) whether they could replace the original B/W screen with a colour one: the answer (from Kenton Douglas) was that they were actually considering doing so within the next 3-6 months."
Absolutely fascinating. I'm wondering what sort of technology would this screen use. I don't know of a single handheld with a colour screen using AA cells. Did they happen to mention whether or not they'll be upgrading (many may feel it's a downgrade!) the battery technology too? Would this colour screen upgrade also require a LiON battery pack to be fitted?
FWIW, if they could fit a high-contrast colour screen into my 5mx and not effect the battery life or the battery type I would definitely want to upgrade. Who wouldn't? Honestly though, sounds a bit *unlikely*.

"b-b-b-but,... I have a Mako! Isn't that good enough?"
All right...I'll let you off the hook - this time!
"I synch with the MC218 at regular intervals, so won't loose too much if one of the machines dies or is lost. That said, the main reason I haven't bought a spare is that I want a S7 or NetBook (or preferably a colour 5mx), and that just isn't on the budget at the moment."
Well I can certainly relate to budgetary problems :), and we all wish that an improved 5mx were on its way. Have you considered the Jornada 728? Not EPOC (oh, oh) and expensive - but it's a (barely) pocketable handheld with a colour screen.
"I haven't lived in a house and had regular access to a fixed phone line since 1992, and as I bring my home with me when I travel, I never stay in hotels."
Quite an amazing lifestyle you've got going there. I don't know how you managed to arrange to live such a dream - but to use an ancient Jewish saying "more power to you!"
"So, why not use the backlight? If you use NiMh batteries or connect to the power supply there's no cost, so I use the backlight most of the time."
Well, I *do* use the backlight! But I assumed your comment on the quality of the 5mx screen (how it was perhaps being unduly disparaged) was on its normative unbacklit state. Hence my comments were too.
"there was some talk of the backlight wearing out with use, but I think experience has proven that this isn't a problem in real life. I've certainly never been able to see any difference in the brightness of the backlight on well used as opposed to brand new units. I suppose that even if it were true, the screen cable would break long before it became a problem..."
According to the figures which were offered up by Sharp (way back when) an EL backlight has a half-life of about 1000 hours (when it has dimmed by 50%) after which time the average consumer will start to notice the degradation. So if I used the light for an average of 3 hours daily the light would have dimmed appreciably in less than a single year! I use my 5mx for well over 5 hours a day - hence I tend to sit under a lamp (when at home), and only use the EL light when no other suitable light source is available!
"So, will I loose my 20-20 hindsight in a years time when I turn 40???"
Maybe. Obviously, it varies from person to person. My Optometrist is not the only one to confirm that 40 tends to be the age when the eyesight of most people begins to degrade :(
"> That and the lack of a card slot. No memory expansion, no onboard backup--yuck."
I'm not sure if that is appropriate for the Revo / Mako. If you want a Revo with a card slot, buy a 5mx."
I was only expressing how I feel about *any* PDA, including the Revo, that doesn't provide a card slot for memory expansion and onboard back up. The data I generate daily is far too vital to me for me to chance carrying it around unbacked up! Firing up my laptop just to backup my handheld every time I add or create an important document or make a change to a database is far to cumbersome to be practical. I could print out those documents and data entries (using my Actisys IR pod) but that's not exactly practical either - at least not for all the files that change day-to-day. Of course with a Revo one could IR synch with another Revo - but then I'd have to carry two handhelds with me! FYI, I use the wonderful Flashback to backup to CF daily, and immediately copy any new or altered important doc or file to my CF - wherever I happen to be. I've also setup a profile in FB to quickly backup just the Documents folder. FB's great in that it can be set to automatically encrypt the backed up files as well.
Also, my 128mb CF is almost full - I'd run out and buy a 256mb card if I could afford it. I suppose I could manage without all those ebooks, html and pdfs docs and zipped up sis files - but I wouldn't like it.
Also, I don't think a 5mx is really a Revo with a card slot. The Revo is much smaller for starts. If Psion had brought out a Revo 3 with an SD slot and a different battery type - I may have bought that instead of a 5mx. I did like the small size and build quality of my Mako.

"Dear David,
I think Psion would have continued with the 'Odin' project had it been close to the pre-production phase of development. The major work would have been done and Psion could have hired a handful of Motorola engineers (on a temporary basis) to assist with making the finishing touches. That Motorola's withdrawal resulted in Psion having to drop Odin points to a development that was at an advanced stage but not at a point for Psion to take over and finish it."
Thanks for the clarification on that, Rolf. So you seem to be confirming that it was indeed Motorola's decision and not Psion's that killed off the Odin project. According to your clarification Psion really had no choice but to give up on it then. Shame on Motorola for playing with the emotions of Psion enthusiasts everywhere- the fools! Didn't they know what they would be in for ;)

"I must say the Nokia impresses me when used in bright sunlight as providing it's not directly shining on the screen (which is easily shaded as necessary anyway due to its small size) it's actually quite readable in these conditions. I find even the S7 isn't particularly good under these circumstances. I wonder if this is due to the S7 being a lower resolution passive LCD type as opposed to the Nokia's higher resolution TFT?"
The 7's screen is lit from behind. Quite simply the bright sunlight is drowning out it's backlight and washing out the screen. The Nokia uses a reflective technology and therefore looks its best when reflecting bright light such as bright indirect sunlight. The chief advantage of an active screen over a passive one is that the active screen will refresh more quickly and will therefore not blur when scrolling or displaying high speed animation. If memory has failed me and the Nokia is not using a reflective screen technology - then forget everything I just said :)

Subject: The Times They Are Changing/PDF printer/PDF Magazine
The Times They Are Changing (Jim Watson-Gove): Jim, as a returning Psion user after two years of Palm devices I would only caution you that the problem with alternative PDAs is not necessarily the keyboard (I had one of the folding, full-size keyboards) but rather the screen. A resolution of 160x160 or even 320x320 is not conducive to working on documents such as spreadsheets and documents. At 160x160 you really cannot see much of the text and at 320x320 the fonts become so small as to be quite difficult to read. I still maintain that for serious working you cannot beat a Psion for its combination of great keyboard and landscape screen.
PDF Printer (Kevin Thorne)
Kevin, you do not print to file to create a PDF document. After installation you will see a new PDF printer 'device' which you print to and this creates the file for you. I guess that it would therefore be possible for a third party to create a 'print to file' printer driver too.
PDF Magazine (Various)
I would prefer to have the magazine available as a download rather than having it emailed to me (perhaps an emailed reminder that a new issue is out would be useful). However, in addition to just discussing the logistics of distributing the magazine has anything been done to actually put anything together yet? Do we have an editor and contributors? Have any articles been decided upon? So far it has all be rhetoric with very little happening AFAIK. No offence to Andy or anyone else who might be working on things behind the scenes but is anything actually happening?
Kind regards.

Philip,
As a similar exercise I converted the V1 #61 digest to PDF. Nothing
fancy used in the way of software (this is BeOS after all) just a PDF
print driver.
The digest came out at 15 pages long and 169K. Two pages long was 41K
but obviously this was without any graphics etc. The complete digest
itself as raw text is 36K.
In that case maybe one format to consider would be more like a digest
(HTML format??????) with emailed summaries of articles each
accompanied
by a hyperlink to the complete article. That way, email bandwidth is
saved with subscribers only needing to go online to view any articles
of interest.

It's probably accurate to say that most platforms now have access to at
least one freeware PDF viewer though.

Thanks to Mike, Jason, Jack, Julie Wills, Nicole for all your responses to my query. Particularly to Mike for suggesting Virgin.net & all those who suggested Orange.net. I had no idea you could use their SMS email notification service without being an Orange subscriber. I've now set myself up using Virgin.net for the basic ISP internet access using their 01483-881766 access number which should be included in my free minutes, & Orange.net for SMS email notification.
Using Bigfoot.com, all incoming emails are distributed to several mailboxes:
- One which is my archive, which I never delete messages from. - Another, which I use with my 5mx, which I keep clear by always moving messages to the Psion's inbox
- one with Orange.net for SMS notification to my phone.
So far this arrangement is working fine & I expect quite a reduction on my next mobile phone bill. So thanks once again
Incidentally, I use www.mail2web.com to access my POP3 mailbox from the web if I ever need to. This, I find very fast & reliable.

I've been using my 5 for some years now, and have been connecting to my PC using PSIWIN (2.3), and to my Revo using the IR port, totally successfully, with never an error. Suddenly, yesterday, when trying to send a file to my Revo, using IR, the 5 flashed up a dialogue box saying "Not found", not even attempting to start the send process, even though the Revo was actively waiting to receive a file. Tried a few more times yesterday, and again today, same result - "Not found". Then tried to connect to my PC using the 'Remote link/cable' option, and again the "Not found" box popped up immediately. Checked the cable, tried a few times, same result. It appears that the 5 comms for IR and cable has stopped working, very suddenly. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions as to how to get the 5 IR and cable comms working again? The 5 has proved a solid, stable workhorse. I'd hate to have to dispose of it.

Answer to: Thomas F. VAN DER ZIJDEN
Re. POP-blocks - Are these free ISP's ? I suppose the free ones earn their money from the commission of the telephone companies and when dialing in from a different ISP they don't earn anything. With Freeserve in the UK you have to dial up once in 90 days at least in order to keep your mailbox. I think it is understandable, nothing for nothing as they say. I still pay Compuserve 7 pounds a month and never have any problems at all (ok, work pays).
Re. SMS/Roaming - This morning there was a big story in The Times in the UK about the ovrecharging of the mobile phone Companies for roaming in Europe. In France, Britons phoning UK pay 60 to 99 pence, French people calling UK pay 44 p. Receiving calls in France costs 82 to 94 p. in Spain Britons calling UK pay 56 to 112 pence, Spanish calling UK 37 p. The European Commission is planning action to reduce the costs of roaming in Europe. Oftel, the telecoms regulator, wants costs cut by 12% a year for 4 years ! Hopefully we can look forward to cheaper calls in Europe. It is also interesting that GPRS in Uk costs with Vodaphone Gbp 2.35 / Mb (is abt. Euro 3.76) and in Germany Euro 25.- / Mb. Someone still in favour of the Euro in the UK <G> ?

Re. Bluetooth - Because EPOC v.5 is not being developed anymore. The only chance is a third party software writer who needs it for himself. Anyone ... ?

Re. In/out emails - No, there is no minimum. When using MochaPPP, you see the counter running both ways with outgoing emails and only one way with incoming.

Re. Freeserve no. - As the digest is handled via Freeserve, yes please, do dig up that STD number ? Thanks in advance.
Re. 9210 - Well said. But why Bluetooth if the palmtop and phone are already integrated ? But than, I am now getting used to my S7 with the much larger screen and great keyboard like the 5MX. A spreadsheet really looks like one with a lot of data viewable on one screen. I carry half my office data with me on the S7, if not more.

Subject: netBook ROM, DATA counter, old digests
Answer to: Peter Keene
Re. netBook ROM - Thanks for your answer. As far as I understood you do not gain the 16 Mb, as most of it will be taken up by the OS which now is not in the ROM anymore and needs space of the RAM. Will the same processor really work faster ?
Answer to: Kevin Cork
Re. DATA counter - The 6310i only counts the total data sent and received, not separately. How do you know what you sent and received ? I kept an almost complete list of DATA sent/received, only emailed, in 37 sessions I used 514,052 bytes which should cost me no more than Gbp 1.15. These were 94 minutes online .... cost using GSM at 9600 speed from The Netherlands ..... ?
