Reply to Rolf Brunsting:
<When you want to have a presentation that works well on the Series 7 it needs to be designed for the Series 7. I therefore think you're actually much better off when you'd recreate your A4 pages for Series 7 output. Preferably on the Series 7 itself.>
Thanks for all the info Rolf. Looks as though I've found something to keep me busy on the S7 during the long dark winter evenings to come! Can you or anyone recommend a good drawing package to help? Has anyone tried RMRArt for example?
Reply to Mystery Man:
<Just wondering...what's the maximum Compact Flash capacity used for a Psion 5MX. I've got a 512MB and watn a larger one! I know that a 1GB one is useable, but I WANT MORE!>
Hey, I thought I was greedy enough! I've held back on getting a 1Gb IBM Microdrive (I currently use a 340Mb one) for my S7, thinking that they would probably bring out a larger size in due course, but this was 2 years ago now and nothing bigger as far as I know is in the pipeline. However, CF cards just keep getting bigger. I don't think that there is a theoretical maximum size but I do know that Psion's policy is not to support any CF sizes bigger than their own largest branded ones of 20Mb. This of course does not mean larger sizes would not work, just that Psion would say "too bad" if an unbranded one would not. The reality of course is that many of us now use other (much cheaper) non-Psion branded CF sizes that were unheard of when the S5 first appeared, with no operational problems at all.

Err... my point exactly. :-)
For Darryl re netBook upgrade:
I think you may have already answered this by ommission, but, any indication of an upgrade to 1024 colours on the screen? Apparently early netBooks (before the public release) provided this colour palette, but then the machine was downgraded to 256 colours for some reason.

Dear Tim,
<< There are 3 listed drivers: PCL Laser, PCL Inkjet, PCL (HP Cable). SOunds like they are PCL-centric, but then I didn't expect anything else from an HP computing product at this price >>
I've always considered it strange that HP only supports PCL as it excludes quite a number of HP's own inkjet printers. Supporting all the features of these GDI printers may require more processing and memory resources a Jornada 720 or 728 can offer. Like printing a full A4 page photograph using HP's optimisation technology (PhotoRet, if I remember correctly). But that you can't even print a simple letter, e-mail or contacts listing is difficult to understand.

Dear Tim,
<< PalmOS: Palm VIIx/i705. for wireless email independent of the company. I'm playing around with this. Much better than the Blackberry or Motorola T900 2-way pagers systems ... >>
I was interested in the Palm VII(x) when it was launched. The integrated wireless communication might have persuaded me to accept the use of a separate add-on keyboard. Problem was that the VII(x) uses a packet radio network that's not widely available outside North America. Understandable when you think of the VII(x) as a 'testing the waters' device. It's better to perform a market trial on home turf than in far and distant lands.
Given the numbers sold I was half expecting a successor to the VII(x) to be available in a GSM version. Allowing Palm to expand the tried and tested palm.net infrastructure into Europe, Asia and elsewhere. I was therefore surprised to see that the i705 is only an update of the VIIx - still using the same packet radio service. (Though Palm devotees will certainly berate me for my "only an update".)
As for the Blackberry, RIM has a version that supports GSM and GPRS available in Europe. Trouble is that I've only seen it advertised in combination with corporate mobile network accounts. I've made some enquiries in the Netherlands and was ensured that I could get one - when I supplied my company's name, address and bank account details plus chamber of commerce registration number. In other words, no-go for a private person like me.
I'm therefore wondering why Palm and RIM are limiting themselves in this way. GSM's Short Message Service (SMS) has been such a success that 2-way alphanumeric pagers never made it outside the emergency services and specialised corporate applications. The small country that is the Netherlands (16 million people) exchanges more than 3 million SMS messages each month. Young people, between the age of 15 and 25, take account of 70% of this volume. And you should see the number of e-mail messages the same age group exchanges in addition to SMS.
When Palm would come with a 'groovy' [1] mixture of M130, i705 and GSM targeted at this age group, and press the mobile networks for some purchase subsidy support, it's going for a market much larger than the one its targeting with the i705. When RIM would get rid of its company-only attitude it could create something equivalent to the Lotus 1-2-3 effect of driving PCs into corporations by employees rather than IT staff. I'm afraid they're leaving the largest catchment market to Handspring (Treo 180 and 270), Nokia (3650, 7650, 9210 and 9290) and SonyEricsson (P800).
Note [1] - My use of the word 'groovy' shows that I'm much too old to belong to this age group.

Dear Trygve,
<< Psioneers must be more socially responsible than most... >>
I wouldn't describe me donating my Psion Series 3 gear to the Delft Museum of Technology as "socially responsible". The simple reason for the donation was that (a) I'd filled my Delft home to the point that I had no storage space left and (b) that I value a collection of books much higher than a collection of old computer gear. It's books that I'm going to read again while I wasn't going to use a Series 3a again.
Books are inspirational while Psions are tools. Getting rid of my old Psions didn't hurt at all. Moving from Delft to Darp, a home with much less shelf space, was something quite different. It meant I had to dispose of about 700 books ... two weeks of agony ... indecision ... moving titles from the 'keep' to the 'lose' piles of books... from the 'lose' to the 'keep' piles of books ...
And now that I've seen Durham Cathedral with my own eyes I do wish I'd kept my copy of Betjeman's "English Architecture".

Psion to switch handhelds to Windows

One of Microsoft?s main competitors, Psion, is to switch its top-of-the-line handheld over to Microsoft's Windows CE operating system in time for Christmas. According to industry sources, the group has told its sales channels that it will produce a netBook personal digital assistant (PDA) that runs the Microsoft operating system some time in the fourth quarter this year.

Hi,
Steve Hodgson wanted to know about PsiLoc+. I can't comment about S7 or netBook but ExtraBars . . . yes.
The Psiloc+ add-ons (ExtraBars, etc.) probably won't be available as the company is concentrating on development of ER6/7, understandably. Other than that I can say that PsiLoc+ works very well indeed on my 5mx.
Good luck,

obligatory. It gives 2005. I do not know the regulations in the EU, but they can be similar. Following them is really *honest*, but I would not consider it exceptional or fantastic."
As I pointed out with Philips, not every company keeps its obligations. (Sharp has been notable here too, and has run afoul of the law at least once in this regard). Anyway, I merely meant to say (as far as service and support goes) that Psion *is* keeping its obligations - whether that is 'fantastic' or not is up to you :) Unfortunately, in the Corporate world it may indeed be exceptional.
I've read more than a handful of complaints online stating, or strongly implying, that Psion is not keeping its obligations to its consumers - I don't think that's fair since I honestly don't think that's true.
"(And IMHO buying any product means buying the product itself *and* the repair service, etc. The calculated prices of any product always includes the repair/change costs, damages, etc. - depending on the product). So it is not a gift, if we get the service we have paid for.)"
Agreed (sort-of), but that is most definitely a consumer's point of view - not all manufacturers or resellers think that way. Also, I didn't mean to imply that it is a gift :) Just that some companies have not provided the level of service and support that their customers may have been ethically or legally entitled to - and that Psion, IMHO, has.
Paint me naive if you will, but I *am* 'grateful' to Psion for the sloooow removal of the 5mx from the marketplace. This allowed me to take the time I needed to ascertain that no newer Psion handheld was coming and to buy a couple of 5mx's from Exportec before they were all gone. I also think it was notable for Psion to have made that last run of 5mx's. I bet that there are hundreds of users out there who are grateful for that last run! I don't know about you, but I believe that I should feel gratitude towards anyone (or anything) who has done me a good turn or who has otherwise helped me out in some way - I'm even grateful to my cane for reducing the pain in my hip! Why be grateful to an inanimate object? - because it instills a positive change in *me*. While feeling simple gratitude or saying 'thank you' may not bring me an *obvious* benefit - not feeling grateful or saying 'thank you' will surely cause me no small measure of harm. I think these two should be viewed as being complimentary apps (ok, technically speaking PDFPrinter is just a driver) rather than as true alternatives to each other.

Here's how I clean the screen of my laptop and all of my handhelds. I use a high quality microfibre optical cloth ($4 cdn from my Optometrist) to wipe the screen down with *just a bit* of liquid screen cleanser. My current bottle is 'Kensington's Screen Guardian' - but there are others. First I lightly dust the screen with the dry cloth and then I wipe it down again with the cloth slightly wetted with the cleanser. Once I've done the screen I move onto the keyboard, the casing and the stylus.
Works great!

Thanks for that interesting and informative explanation :)

Hmmm. I looked more carefully at the problem message. Though it can't be seen from the Editor view, I *can* see the problem character in the Subject header from the Folder view. Rick has pointed out that the character is actually a 'Shift-Space'. Unfortunately the combination of StickyKeys, fast-typing and this character's invisibility in both Word and Email means I may inadvertently do it again :(

Kind of hard to copy 'pure text' from Word into Email isn't it?? There's no 'paste as pure text' feature in EPOC that I'm aware of. If there's a way to copy pure text into Email please let me know! I know I can do an export to text in Word and then copy and paste, but a real 'copy pure text' feature could be useful - maybe.

Yup, you're quite right :) Holding Shift down while inserting a space does create the 'problem' character (I can see it in the Subject header from Email's Folder view). I own a 10 MByte Psion branded SanDisk, a 40 MByte and 128 MByte SanDisk plus a 256 MByte SanDisk Ultra. The Ultra is indeed faster than the other three. Thing is, that the Psion reads the directory tree and the directory contents when you want to open or save (say) a Word file. The larger the disk the more extensive the tree and the more files, negating the speed advantage of the Ultra. Reason why I don't experience that much of a difference when I swap the 128 MByte card for the 256 MByte one."
Sorry Rolf, I'm confused. A larger CF card should be slower than a smaller card of the same type formatted the same way - no? Is the 256MB Ultra about as fast on your 5mx (even when dealing with the Psion's annoying method of reading the entire tree and contents) as the smaller standard 128MB card? If so it would seem that the Ultra technology is at least offsetting the increase in size of the 256 Ultra - that is without the Ultra technology the 256MB card would be substantially slower in a 5mx than a 128MB card. When you say: "I don't experience that much of a difference when I swap the 128 MByte card for the 256 MByte one." doesn't that indicate that the Ultra technology is indeed offsetting the increase in card size (storage)? So then, is the Ultra technology - to your mind - worth paying extra for if a large card will be used solely in a 5mx?

For sure, yes, but I was comparing more with the Psion range in this respect
IYSWIM."
Well, you had compared the Jornada screen with that of "a decent laptop" - I just thought it was important that readers (especially any prospective purchaser of a 72x out there) understand the differences in quality between today's average laptop screen and the screen found on a Jornada HPC.
What does IYSWIM stand for?
"Not my experience, on both my Psion models the keyboards look awful and worn now, even after cleaning, my 680 is fine, no wear etc. and it's had way more use in the last couple of years.
The screen is fine too, no cable trouble yet, which is more than I can say for my 5mx unfortunately."
Sorry, when I wrote "The 720 has the superior keyboard, in terms of feel, but I do think it is a bit more delicate in some ways." I was thinking only in terms of liquid and contaminant entry, not actual mechanical wear and tear. I have read of 680-720 keyboard failures (besides those caused by liquid entry) due to small bits of the keys (underneath) breaking off. More likely this would happen in a fall, I suppose. BTW, Thanks for telling us of the mechanical longevity/durability of your 680's keyboard - it's good to know.
Even though the larger and heavier HP (compared to a 5mx) is of an arguably more robust design - I would still carry it in a good HARD-case. Unfortunately, unlike the 5mx, their is no form-fitted hard-case for the Jornada. The Otterbox is available and affords even better protection than a PalmTec case does a 5mx, but that really makes the already large HP HUGEMONGOUS! I like that I can carry my 5mx in a protective hard-case and still fit it in my pants or jacket pocket. Unsurprisingly, I'd like to see HP's next HPC line come down in size!
BTW, how old was your 5mx when you suffered its first cable break? How many times a day would you estimate that you had opened it on average?
"But yes, it's pluses and minuses with the hardware but IMHO I reckon the HP machines shade it - but they are more expensive and are a lot heavier."
Do you find the HP too wide or too heavy or otherwise unsuitable for thumb-typing? Is it uncomfortable to hold in one hand for any substantial length of time? How many apps can you have running at once without the HP slowing down or becoming unstable?
Here is what's running right now on my 5mx: Agenda, two large TomeRaider Dictionaries, a *large* Jotter file, two Data files, DreamConnect, QuickNote, the latest Digest in PDF, an ebook in Ebook, Email, Macro5, ExtraBars, Locker, RecycleBin (demo), ZipManager (demo), VoiceMan, StickyKeys, BatCheck.
With all of this running I've got 2700k left in RAM and I am seeing no problems with slowdown or stability. Could the HP run a comparable number of similar apps without problems?

Isopropyl Alcohol is also known as Rubbing alcohol. It can be purchased at most any pharmacy.

Consider what you like, it WAS written and I meant it. Unfortunately, you don't seem to have got the message - your posting to Itamar in # 75 goes beyond pedantism to verge on harassment."
Is it just me or is it getting HOT in here? Didn't Itamar mention sometime ago that he did *not* have a problem with Rolf's posting style (or something to that effect) ? Certainly when Rolf mentioned the 'missing' address change notification he was ultimately just asking a question, and his comments on Itamar's quoting method recently (below) - well wouldn't it be advisable to see if it bothers *Itamar* before getting all heated up? Personally I don't see anything wrong with Rolf's having commented on Itamar's posting style, or with the way Rolf did it. Honestly, I don't see how it could be construed as being so extreme as to 'verge on harrassment'.
"To avoid boring or irritating other subscribers I am happy to continue this dialogue with you off-digest."
Perhaps it would have been best to have *started* this particular dialogue offlist?
Rolf wrote to Itamar:
"Sorry to sound linguistically pedantic, but it's best to put a repeat of words between quotation marks. Specially when you don't quote in a traditional fashion."

Have you tried a Web search using Google.com? Something like "daylight savings time" should turn something up :)

Subject: RE: HHC usage?
"David,
"Well, OK, you asked..."
Oh, oh! I don't like the sound of that! :)
"I can accept needing a desktop somewhere to load SW, and maybe to back up to."
I can accept the former (if I have to) - but *never* the latter!
"I do not like any system that cannot run independent of the desktop for long periods of time."
Same here.
"I use separate units for home/hobby and for work"
I could never manage such a feat of juggling!
"Color? I'm ambivalent. It looks cool, but I'd rather have the run time on batteries instead of a color screen."
Agreed. Runtime comes first - but colour is *nice*.
"Currently used HHC (HandHeld Computer) OS types: PPC, HPC, EPOC, Palm."
Again, I don't know how you can manage to juggle them all!
"I decided to abandon any clamshell HHC for PIM usage."
I've gone back and forth between clamshells and small slates a few times - this time I'll stick with a clamshell for as long as they make 'em. But If I wanted a PDA *only* for PIM usage I'd have either bought a 3mx, (great Agenda, clear screen, super long battery life on AA cells, and a good keyboard!) or I'd have stuck with a Palm.
"PalmOS: Palm Vx. My current work HHC for PIM. I use QuickOffice, HandDBase, etc. It isn't a clamshell - no hinge to fail."
Nope, just a LiON cell to be replaced by Palm - eventually.
"I can keep up with any meeting notes using a Palm folding keyboard - very nice."
I was using a PPK too. Nice to use, but not always there (in my pocket) when I needed it - hence the move to a Psion.
"Handwriting recognition on any PDA - Palm or PPC - just
doesn't cut it for more than a few words or short notes."
It can be done - it's just more work :)
"HPC2000: Jornada 720. My first foray into the Microsoft
understanding of a handheld OS. Somewhat erratic and needs a soft reset about once a week."
Not too bad - not too great either.
"Need to use TextMaker for actually creating documents due
to severe limitations in Pocket Word. ListPro is a "gotta have"
application"
Yup, and yup. ListPro is an excellent listmaker with database features - but it's not much of an outliner. The best outliner I've ever seen is ShadowPlan on the Palm. I'm still hoping that myList will make it to ER5 though!
"Enough?"
Oh yes - definitely! ;)

Tim wrote:
"After my touch screen digitizer failed on the J720 and was repaired under warranty (LCD screen assembly was replaced), I noticed that the newer screen has a lighter touch."
Very interesting. Perhaps they've been quietly improving them?
"I have noted that the "hard" push that is necessary sometimes seems to be due somehow to the OS, not to the sensitivity of the screen in that exact spot. Another WinCE'ism I'm afraid."
I wonder if this problem is somehow related to HP's choice of processor? Some users of other HPCs (NEC, Intermec/Sharp) when comparing to the HP have noted that this problem was Jornada specific. Perhaps it's not the OS after all?
"I have to admit in some 4 copies of a Psion 5MX I've never had a screen failure of any type in over 4 years."
Glad to hear that, I wonder though - why 4 5mx's in 4 years?
"A keyboard from one 5MX has been popped out of place so many times, I'm getting really fast at slipping it back in to it's slides."
What's the cause of this? I'm guessing you're not keeping that 5mx stored in a hardcase!
"I've had over 6 copies of the RevoPlus or Diamond Mako,"
Again: why so many?
"and I've had only one battery related problem"
Glad to hear that too. Unfortunately my one Mako was all too problematic :(
"The run time on a RevoPlus before having to recharge is just too short,"
The Mako was giving me 6-7 hours. That was too short a runtime for me too.
"and the self-discharge of the inaccessible rechargeable battery of the Revo really confused other members of my family with random usage."
Good point. If you don't use a PDA much (per day) you'd be better off with a good LiON cell or better yet sticking to alkalines. Either way best to avoid NiMH in such a case.

Subject: Next netBook with choice of Symbian/EPOC or WinCE
Hot article at The Register:
netPad (not netBook) in test with WinCE (german version at Psionwelt or Mobile2Day)
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27154.html
netPad successfully tested with CE in US and Europe! The next version of the netbook leaves the choice of the OS to the customer: WinCE or Symbian/EPOC !
And a faster CPU is necessary for CE...
What is your opinion?

Subject: SMS transfers to S7
Does anyone with a Nokia 9210 know if it is possible to transfer received SMS from the phone to the Psion using the "Synchronise with phone" option in the Email app? I used this option a lot when I used my 8210 but it doesn't work with the 9210, although fax and data work fine (I didn't even need to change my original 8210 modem settings).
Regards
Kevin Thorne
