I have the slight edge on you I'm afraid. And now want one of those new improved netBooks! My collection at the moment stands at 12 thus :-
MC400, Series 3, Series 3a, Series 3mx, Siena, Geofox 1, Series 5, Series 5mx, Ericsson MC218, Series 7(32MB), Series 7 with netBook ROM, netbook(64MB)
Spend far too much time on ebay when I'm not touring! Only machines I bought new was first series 5 which got nicked along with my motorbike, and the Ericsson I replaced it with. Everything else was off 3lib, ebay, loot, slimsimms or in the sale!
Got the second Series 7 the other day for £160 from cex cos mine has been round Europe on tour far too many times and have screen contrast problems and power connection is knackered - problem charging the battery. (Same thing with the MC400 -any solutions Trygve?) Still good going after 2 years constant use and a lot of abuse. Only lost data once and that was cos let backup battery drain(Was in a field working a festival at the time). I know Itamar has a spare 5mx in the safe but I wanted a spare 7! (just have to get it fixed first) netBook was gonna be my home machine but as been homeless since June have it on road with me at the moment (and being very careful)
When around long enough want to try setting up the DOS emulator on one of the 7s with intention of running a SIBO emulator for DOS on top of that. Then can try out all those Series 3 programs I keep buying. I think it was Harold Fuchs who had managed this so if he's still on the digest I would like to know if he has any tips. Or anyone else for that matter.
Have just bought myself a copy of MS DOS 6.2 off ebay so when get back to London (November 2nd) am gonna try and borrow my mate's PC and have a go at setting it up. If I'm around even longer there's the Linux OS I'd like to investigate as well. Anyone any experiences of running this on a Psion?
Never bothered with the Revo - too many battery issues. Whole point of a PDA is can take it with me anywhere and not be tied to a power socket every day. Siena was always my favorite pocket computer (and fits in the Palmtec Revo case) but couldn't share info which was why stopped using it eventually. MC218 took over for long time but since got the 7 screen seems painfully inferior, and the Palmtec belt holster was never very substantial so don't carry it as often as I used to. Use the 7 almost exclusively, with MC218 as a reserve/reference machine when I'm out on the bike. But cos had that a while as well took the 5mx on my round the world jaunt in the spring in case the screen cable failed on me. But touch wood haven't had that problem yet. So should be set for the next few years at least with all the hardware I have now. Couldn't face using another OS. EPOC was my first intro to computing (apart from crashing my bosses PC at work) and although very sad to see their recent fall from grace at least it's meant that I've been able to buy nearly everything at well below retail prices!

PS Talking about the Revo - has anyone tried to run thebuilt-in 'Today' app on another machine - 5mx or 7? Tried a 'Today' style app off Tucows but it was for ER3 so only interfaced with Message Suite and not the ER5 EPOC Messaging app.

Subject: Re: 1Gb CF for 5mx
Dear Alan,
<< Rolf, does it read the 'Path' down to the directory or the whole disk tree, even if re-saving a file without closing it? >>
The way I understand it is that it reads the first level of the disk tree whenever the function you use triggers the display of a file dialog box. In Word this would be such functions as:
- Create new file,
- Open file,
- Save as,
and,
- Import text file.
Highlight the Folder list box of the file dialog, press [Tab] and the whole tree is read.
Note that this isn't necessarily true for all applications. Some of the applications I've installed use Neuon OPXs and function libraries and they're are much quicker in listing files and directories. One of the OPXs that's installed is called nDirNav and I trust this is an alternative to the standard EPOC file I/O functions.
I haven't noticed any difference in performance between small and large cards when saving an existing file - [Crtl][s].
<< If it's only the path and not the full tree, then better performance would be achieved by a better organisation of our directories >>
I've noted that switching the display of the System directory off improves the responsiveness of the above Word functions. Some other applications, however, disregard the 'Show System folder' setting. Making my daily backup copy of the C drive hidden on the CF card also improves responsiveness.
I'd like to that that I haven't really tested the speed differences between various organisation methods. I've organised my directories and files structure on the basis of a personal "Where would I look for..." set of ideas. When this results in a less than optimal file dialog response, so be it. Hunting for a file also takes time.

Subject: Re: 1Gb CF for 5mx (4 Rolf B.)
Dear David,
<< Sorry Rolf, I'm confused >>
It's not that difficult - the speed advantage of the 256 MByte SanDisk Ultra isn't an absolute. Take a 128 MByte SanDisk, a 256 MByte SanDisk and a 256 MByte SanDisk Ultra and put an increasing number of files on all three.
a) The Ultra always wins the speed race when the file/folder set is less than 128 MByte.
b) The Ultra also wins from its normal 256 MByte stablemate when the set is more that 128 MByte in size.
c) Compare the 256 MByte SanDisk Ultra at (say) the 200 MByte of files and folders point with the normal 'filled to the brim' 128 MByte SanDisk and the speed advantage of the Ultra has all but disappeared.
The reason for this behaviour is EPOC's directory/folder tree scanning whenever an application calls the standard EPOC file dialogs on screen. The more first level files and folders you have (root and folders off the root) the longer it takes EPOC to 'prepare' the file dialog.
Coming back to your original question - whether you're better off paying extra for a SanDisk Ultra needs to be answered with a qualified Yes. It's only worthwhile when the responsiveness of the standard SanDisk you currently own bothers you. Buying the next size up in standard SanDisk form will then become a pain.

Dear Philip,
<< When you wrote "Donating old PDA gear to a worthy cause is something I'd like to recommend to all EPOC Digest readers" it sounded very socially responsible, even sensitive and sensible >>
It's probably because I associate social responsibility with actions and activities that are of more direct benefit to (local) society. Also because the reason why I made the donation was something as mundane as running out of storage space at home. I've effective used the museum as a prestigious rubbish dump for my old Psion Series 3 gear.
<< It's very English to be so self-deprecating - did you enjoy Durham so much that you became a little English? >>
Nope - It goes against the old Dutch strand of Calvinistic thought that something without suffering won't be any good <G>.
As for being English, I first visited England together with my parents when I was 14. Which was followed by a string of other holidays in England, Scotland and Wales. Either with my parents or on my own. I've come to love the country and its people and consider it my home from home.
<< I've seen a few English cathedrals ... >>
I've visited most of the cathedrals you mention through the years but the smaller churches can be just as interesting. I've visited Hexham Abbey during this holiday - a very nice one with, for me, an interesting history.
<< The Roman castle at Hardknott Pass is a good place to go, the view is marvellous ... >>
The northern border of the Roman empire in Britain is one of subjects for this holiday and I, indeed, went to the Roman fort at Hardknott Pass. I'm very lucky to have had such good weather as Hardknott Pass can be a cold and bleak place.
<< And you're a reader who hates throwing books away ... >>
When I go bankrupt it won't be because of buying Psion gear or other gadgets but because of buying books, magazines and newspapers. I'm at two thirds of my holiday when I write this and the tally stands at nine books, seven magazines plus The Times each day. And I've reserved the last afternoon of this trip for a good browse in the bookshops of Newcastle upon Tyne. I'll therefore leave Britain looking like a travelling bookseller (as usual).

Dear Itamar,
<< A bit ironical of course that Nokia uses Symbian 0.6 and Psion leaves it behind ... >>
It's a general misconception that every Symbian OS release would be the next step for Psion. This wasn't the case shortly after Symbian was formed (think of the four reference designs) and hasn't been the case ever since. Most of the work that went into versions 6 and 7 has been concentrated on supporting the hardware platforms of the phone manufacturing partners and adding phone/communicator related services. Psion-Teklogix can use a number of modules that are part of the 'construction kit' that is Symbian OS 6/7 but most of them won't be of any interest.
<< I am not sure what it will mena for further development of Symbian 0.6, but if correct it could be the end of this great operating system. Third party developers surely would not be happy hearing this. >>
This doesn't make any sense to me as you appear to take no regard of such devices as the Nokia 9210, 9290, 7650 and 3650 plus the SonyEricsson P800. You also take no account of Siemens and Samsung having licensed Nokia's Symbian OS based Series 60 platform. It won't take that long for Nokia to have produced more Symbian OS devices than Psion and Psion-Teklogix combined.

Here's one way I know of.
1. Make sure Show Hidden Files and Show System Files are checked.
You need to get on system screen, then use Tools/Preferences to
access these boxes. If the System silkscreen button doesn't work,
you can get to the system screen via Ctrl+10064.
2. In System screen, Ctrl+Tab will bring up what you usually see
when you "Browse Folders".
3. Up arrow to get to the Disk box, then Right arrow to get to Z.
4. Down arrow to Spell.
5. Right arrow, then down arrow to Spell.app, then Enter.
6. This brings you to the System screen with Spell.app selected.
7. Enter. Viola! Oops, voila! :-)
A bit of a hassle, but it does work. Maybe somebody else has a
niftier trick.

Subject: Cleaning Keyboard?/Goldcard Modem Woes
Hello all,
My S7's keyboard is in dire need of a good cleaning. My elderly FIV+ Mr. Kitty is a prolific shedder and try as I may, there's no keeping these keys from snatching his hair from his back if he so much as looks at the keyboard!
Can S7 keys be removed and replaced safely or are there other
suggestions?
More troublesome: My Goldcard Multifunction PC Card GSM & ISDN Ready modem is no longer reliable. This is an older version. I started getting an error message telling me that the modem was not responding, make sure it was on etc,
I thought perhaps it was the cable but switched to my travel modem which proceeded to eat up every battery I owned and made the folks at Radio Shack, then Costco very happy to see me. Sometimes I'd have to do a soft reset because Web or the modem would be confused and then I'd try the gold card and it would work for a few sessions and only if it's on a flat surface and not moved (?).
The motherboard had to be replaced earlier this year and I had to send it back to repair again because the modem wouldn't work at all afterwards, so this could be related. But I splurged and ordered a new card from Sparco.com, received the latest model, suitable for WAN, but without cable -- nowhere on the form to order to, so I assumed it was included, called the company to request they send it, they agreed to, never heard from them again. Using my old cable, I inserted the new modem and got ..."not supported" I've been playing phone tag with the folks at Psion here and in England. I'll continue to try to get someone (preferably the guy who worked on it before if he's
still around, anyone know Nick at Psion Repair in Kentucky, USA?
Many thanks,

Tom, a couple of months ago Lineone (now called Tiscali) changed the access number. On the PC it was a case of clicking on the letter they sent and it installed the new number for you, and you may have done that. But that would not have worked on the Psion. Check the access number is 0845 6614681 and if it isn't, make it so and all should be fine.
I just connected using the number given here and it worked fine. I then tried to use the old number and it connected but then also sent a message warning me to change the settings. As I had no mail waiting, I have no idea if the old number would have given me my real posts.
Try changing the number and see if that does the trick.

My two-pence worth how I use FM for business. When I go for final negotiations I have the contract in a Word file and a Sheet file with the floating costs, etc. data. I have a Voyager SVGA card and during the talks I feed the oncoming ideas "what if we..." into the sheet and project it. So everyone (=all levels of the deceison making process at the partner) can understand it at once. (Sometimes our side walks out to let them discuss the on-screen data alone. Or if we are few and meet in a hotel or a lounge, just sit around the netBook, and I do not use the VGA Card.)
I *must* use a very narrow Adobe Type1 font installed on my Psion: this way the 640x480 screen is enough to show everything. When I tried it with the wider built-in fonts, the continuous scrolling prevented the usual 5-10 partners to enjoy the "show", because -as general- everyone was interested in a different point.
When we reach agreement, they usually say, "please, send the contract and data sheet to us by e-mail", but to make sure I do not make any change in it, they had to make tiresome notes. Then I pull out my magic wand: Citizen PN60i (with its 1kg weight, incl. battery, IRDA port, 300dpi on A/4 plain paper it is a constant success and draws everyone's attention). Using Andrew Johnson's great printer driver which works perfectly with Font Machine, I put the fine-tuned contract on paper using the company's own letterhead & document Windows TrueType fonts, and the data sheet with the narrow font. One of my assistants makes the necessary stamping and after signing we hand over a ready made contract even before the last question about the Citizen printer is asked.
Usual disclaimer: ...just a happy user.

Chris,
When I use Shift+Control+Fn+S I get a dialog (Save screen image as EPOC
picture file) that allows the location of the file and it's name to be
defined along with the number of colours etc. This also works within
application as well.
I've never used a 5mx so can't be certain, but would imagine this would
be the same - a quick check on TBH's Revo confirms this.

Subject: JOTTER / NETBOOK OS
Hi Guys,
For Janet re lost Jotter app and files:
Jotter was not one of the built-in apps on the S5 so I'm assuming that you installed it from a .sis file, which is interesting. If you restore the backup that you made before going on vacation then obviously you will not be restoring the Jotter data that you made while away, but you should get the app back if you installed it on the CF card.
You don't mention whether you have your 5mx back yet, but I would suggest that you wait until you can put the card into that machine and see if your data is still there before resorting to a restore on the S5.
By the way, the status of the backup battery should be of no consequence to the apps and data on the CF card and would only be of consequence for the C drive if the main battery ran flat at the same time.
Re netBook OS:
I finally got around to reading the Register postings on the netxxx and WINCE. It is confirmed that only the netpad will offer a CE platform as an option to ER5 at this stage. As for the netBook, apparently the next generation machine could offer a choice of two OSs - CE and something else. The something else could be an updated ER5 or a heavily revised version of Symian v7 (not designed to run at VGA resolution) or ... something else. The posting was based on an interview with Raf Jerziesky of Psion Teklogix and apparently an updated version of ER5 is more likely.

My guess is you're not really doing anything wrong except mis-timing your key presses. If no dialog box appears to offer you a choice of file name, where to save it and image type then try pressing Shift+Control first, wait a second THEN carefully press Fn THEN press S (i.e. don't press all the keys simultaenously). I used to find this would happen quite frequently on my 5mx and it's probably due to trying to squash four fingers simultaenously into the tight space on a 5mx. When I started using a S7 the "problem" disappeared, probably due to the keys being much further apart.

Subject: 1Gb Microdrive performance
I mentioned about a week ago that my new 1Gb Microdrive ran more quietly and was faster in operation than my old "first generation" 340Mb one. I also mentioned IBM's claim that it was also more power efficient, but at that point in time I couldn't verify that claim as I needed to run several full charge to discharge cycles on my S7 and use ChasDis 7 to monitor its performance with the new drive. Well, I've now done 4 full charge to full discharge cycles and I can now say yes, it is definitely making a measurable difference. I'm probably getting approximately 20 to 30 minute's more run time now from my S7 on each of those last 4 cycles. No doubt the run time figures would improve significantly more if I used a CF card instead but that 1Gb size that has been mentioned recently is rather expensive! Perhaps all us S7/netBook owners should have a run time competition to see who can get the longest run on one charge, a bit like those AA mpg competitions ;-)

Subject: What SIM and ISP in the Republic of Ireland?
Howdy!
I arrived in Carnlough, Northern Irland at 03:00 this morning after a good 9 hour crossing on a broad reach in force 3 - 5 from Gigha Island in Scotland. It got a bit bouncy off the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre with the wind falling light and the confused waves knocking the wind out of the sails, but was otherwise quite pleasant. I should be in southern Ireland in a few days. When I get there, I'll need to buy a new SIM card for my T39 and find an ISP to connect me to the net for my daily dose of the EPOC digest and some private e-mails too.
Does anyone have any suggestions for which "'pay as you go" SIM offers the best balance of price and coverage, and what free ISP to use? I'd also be thankful if someone with landline Internet access could help me subscribe to a free ISP in Ireland. As I'll continue to use my frisurf.no address, I don't really need an e-mail address, just an Internet connection and access to an SMTP server.
PS. Someone else mentioned problems connecting to Tiscali with their Psion. When I first arrived in the UK a little over a month ago, I used my old psion.net / tiscali account to connect with my Psions and T39 (with Vodafone SIM), but then suddenly it wouldn't work, so I switched to UK2 which works fine. I haven't tried Tiscali since, so don't know if it was just a temporary problem. Maybe they've changed something. From what some other users have reported, it seems they may be getting greedy...
Connection details for UK2 are:
0845 609 1370
Username: uk2
Password: uk2
POP3 Server: mail.uk2.net (only for UK2 addresses)
SMTP Server: smtp.uk2.net (must use dialup)
(First posted by Rick Gillion, thanks RIck)
PS. Anyone in the Belfast, Dublin or Cork area, or anywhere inbetween with a good harbour or anchorage, please contact me. I'd love to have you aboard for a Psion chat, a cup of tea or something stronger... (What could possibly be stronger than a Psion chat and a cup of tea...)
PPS.
Carnlough is a lovely little harbour. I'm glad Naomi isn't any bigger though. If I'd had a 50 footer, I'd only be able to get half the boat inside the harbour mouth!
PPPS:
The Caledonian Canal was very nice, but if any of you are going to that area just for a weekend trip sans boat, the other smaller Lochs are prettier than Loch Ness (but don't have monsters of course...)

Subject: NEW GENERATION NETBOOK
Hi Guys,
The apparent confirmation (in the Register's interview with Psion Teklogix's Raf Jerziesky) that a new generation (NG) netBook is being considered, set me to wondering about what I, as a business user, would like to see in the netBookNG. This is over and above what the netBook currently offers (support for Bluetooth is apparently on the way).
I've divided my wish list into must-haves, nice-to-haves and options.
MUST-HAVES
1.) An update of ER5 as the OS. I'm not interested in the WINCE option, and I don't believe that a revised Symbian v7 will give the business-level functionality that I'm looking for. I'm familiar with ER5 and prize its stability. The OS should include native support for:
Colour printing of text and graphics with on-screen display of the actual fonts.
Screen rotation.
Synchronisation with both Macs and Windows machines.
2.) An updated and expanded ER5 app suite. The updates and new apps that I'm looking for are:
Word - should include native conversion to and from RTF and MS Word formats.
Sheet - should include native conversion to and from Excel.
EMail - should include support for multiple windows.
A stable full-function web browser that is memory efficient.
A relational database with native conversion to and from Access.
A full-function PDF app.
An app that allows me to create and display (on board and via projector) presentations that include text and graphics, with colour support. This should include native conversion to and from Powerpoint.
Integration between Agenda, Contacts and Email.
The PsiBoard virtual keyboard, for use when the screen is in portrait mode.
3.) Genuine 8 hour battery life in normal use.
4.) Splash protection to IP3 level. (It already has an IP rating of 3 for protection against the ingress of solids.)
5.) A backup utility allowing incremental backups to CF. Copying the C drive each time takes too long.
NICE-TO-HAVES
1.) An internal modem.
2.) Support for more colours on-screen.
3.) Keyboard backlighting.
4.) Battery monitoring like the netpads, but with prediction of remaining life at current discharge rate.
5.) A full-function find-file utility.
OPTIONS
1.) A transflexive screen for outdoor use.
2.) High capacity battery.
Once I've added my must-have third party apps - RMRZip, MBMView, Plan5 and TimeLog - that should do it for me, but I'm sure that many of you would have different requirements of the netBookNG.
Apologies for the long posting.
Regards,
Peter

Re. Repair - You don't write in which country you live. In the UK you can use either Psion repair or POS, but below 70 pounds you will not get it repaired.
Re. Subscribe - See the instructions at the bottom of each digest how to subscribe. You either send an email or subscribe via the website.
Re. Connection - First try a soft reset. If that does not work, try to delete the Lineone settings, do a soft reset, and re-enter the settings again. This should do the trick.
Answer to: Chris Cooper
Re. Screenshots - When I press these keys I get a window allowing me to name the file as a EPOC picture file. Maybe you should also do a soft reset and try again ?
Answer to: Alberto
Re. Screencable - Some people have had more than their fair share of this problem, others not at all. We have 4 5MX's in the Company and did not have a cable problem as yet.
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re. nConvert - Yes, I agree. But than, there is soooo much that Psion SHOULD have done and they might still be selling PDA's today <G>.
Answer to: Kate Head
Re. Spell - Anyof the known programs like Macro5, Extrabar, Assistant, etc. will allow you to create a shortcut or choose programs to run with key strokes. Eventually however the cable will stop functioning alltogether so a repair at POS might well be a good idea.

>Subject: S5mx-Toshiba IR transfer
>Has anyone successfully transferred files between an S5mx and a Toshiba Pocket PC using infrared?
If you mean that you want to transfer an arbitrary file, rather than say a vCard object, then you probably need an IrOBEX client at each end
that is happy about sending or receiving any file as an IrOBEX object. For the Psion, that would be either the shareware PlBeam (or the free equivalent C-Pen have released as psion.SIS). For the PocketPC, I believe that you need a program called Peacemaker.
You could also attempt to send an arbitrary file by using the Psion Comms application. That works for me for beaming Postscript files to
my laser printer, however I'd expect the PocketPC would need an equivalent comms application that was IrDA aware. (I'd assume
in thjis case the transfer would be via the legacy IrCOMM).
Please note that each end still needs to know how to deal with the
file in question. That is, a PocketPC won't recognise a Psion file, and vice versa. It only makes sense to send files that have a common
format. For example, a text file or an HTML file. You may also get away with converting Epoc Word or Sheet via nConvert to Microsoft
Word or Excel, as I understand the PocketPC may now accept them.
You probably have to open the files from within a File Open dialog, not from a System screen.

That is the correct keycode. On my Psion 5mx it pops up a dialog for where to save the resulting capture. I suspect that you have some sort of keystroke macro running, and that is capturing some of your keyboard input.
You can find a list of keyboard codes at

While I was away I took a lot of notes in Jotter. I didn't turn on the
Series 5 for about a week after I got back home and discovered it needed a backup battery which I then replaced. After installing the new battery, however, Jotter had disappeared along with its data!
I have to wonder if the lack of battery power caused a full reset, in which case your notes would be lost.
The original Series 5 does not include either a Find nor a Jotter, so I am not at all sure what you were using for your Jotter entries. There have been some third party products for doing notes. There is also a fairly easy way to set up a standard Data file as a Jotter (the Jotter in the series 5mx is just a specialised instance of Data, just as the Help system is). Do you recall anythin g about your Jotter? The name of the file, for example? There
are some third party Find utilities you could add to a Psion 5 to make it easier to locate a file whose name you know. Some can also find a file
by Date, so looking for files updated while on holidays may work.

Chris,
Try Fnc+Cont=Shift+S. You should then get a splash screen headed 'Save screen image as EPOC picture file' and you can proceed to save it before opening in an appropriate app.

Hi Chris,
How very odd- in fact so strange that I have to respond and see if you really have this problem about the Screenshot function.
The one thing I know is important is the sequence in which you press the keys. All at once is not always a guaranteed success. Try holding CTR-Shift-Fn and then add "s" to it.
You may like StickyKeys if you are short on fingers. Also try changing the keyboard responses in the control panel.
Remember that MBMView takes over this function if running and you do not see the result in the screen.
Hard reset maybe?? Good luck, I remain curious. Hanno

Speaking only of the 5mx: how long did your 5mx's screen-cable last? I'm about to buy a second round of apps for my 5mx and it has just occurred to me that it wouldn't be worth spending a lot more on apps if the cable is going to break *too* often. I've had my 5mx for well less than 6 months. I suppose I should have asked earlier, *before* buying my first round of apps - but at least I'm asking before I spend the dough on rounds two and then three :)

I'm running the demo of nConvert with an eye towards purchasing it in the not too distant future. Unfortunately, I find that nConvert can only convert (about) half of the .html files I throw at it :( The other half won't convert - instead nConvert pops a "This file cannot be converted" message on-screen. Can anyone offer an explanation for this? I figure it has something to do with the convertible and the unconvertible .html files being different in some way. If there is a workaround or solution I'd like to hear that too - other than manually opening each file myself with Web and copy-pasting into Word! Automated conversion of .html files to EPOC Word format was one of the chief reasons I was considering buying nConvert. Any thoughts?

When done properly a dialog box will pop up asking you to name the new file and to choose a location for it. I assume by what you've written that you're not seeing this dialog box. Perhaps you've set a hotkey (in Macro5 for instance) to Shift+Control+Fn+S? This would certainly prevent EPOC's built-in screen grab from working! Can't really suggest anything more, I'm afraid, but whatever you do - do give StickyKeys a try - it will make multiple key combinations *easy*! I don't have an URL handy but a search on Google.com should locate it. I can mail you a copy too - let me know :)

I found the same thing and, like you, now use M5 for all hotkeyed macros. Quite a nuisance!

The ebook fonts are not usable in most EPOC apps though. I'll see if I can find the font loader from Zavorine though.
