Subject: Virus alert
A number of subscribers have already received an email "Epoc Digest with the subject EPOC DIGEST V1 # 081". As Mike and others rightly says it contains an attachment, photo.exe which is a worm called bugbear which can do a lot of damage if allowed to infect a system.
This email was NOT sent from the Digest Team. Someone used our name. Could be someone who is infected as the worm randomly changes email address and subject.
Let me also ensure all of you that it's impossible (so far) that you'll ever get any virus from the Digest. All messages are handled on and sent from Psion machines, hence viruses will have no effect on our Psion's and when handling the messages, even potential viruses are removed from the final Digest. If a virus should be included in the Digest the current operator would have to attach it manually. Quite unlikely to happen.

Michael Degn

You actually only need the first 16 bytes of the actual application,
since that contains the Psion software ID number. There is an
application that does this:
AppLink
Simon Long, shareware. AppLink creates links to EPOC applications - equivalent to shortcuts in Windows or aliases on the Macintosh. AppLinks are small (only 16 bytes) and can be put anywhere in the EPOC file
system. They display the same icon as the actual application linked to,
and tapping on one launches the application in exactly the same way as clicking on its Extras bar icon. You do not need to have AppLink
running in the background (or even installed on your Psion) for AppLinks
to work - they are handled by EPOC itself through an undocumented
feature of the OS. [Simon is refering to the 16 byte header of all Eikon applications, which includes the file UID and a checksum. I would
guess he has written a nice application for generating such stubs. Cute.] http://www.kudata.freeserve.co.uk/

That sounds almost as if the drive door switch was not indicating that
the card had been changed, leading to the Psion still believing it
had the 8 MB card.

Subject: Using Emulator
Hello John,
I am assuming that teh Emulator is installed and working and that you just want it to open you latest backed up files when fire it up...
There are three startup files called:
epoc.ini
vga.ini
large.ini
They are in C:\epoc32\data\
Each produces a different size screen on your PC. Large.ini works perfectly if you PC screen is 1024×768.
You need to edit whichever of these startup files you choose to use to point it to your Psion backup.
Mine (large.ini) looks like this:
ScreenWidth 800
ScreenHeight 600
ScreenOffsetX 85
ScreenOffsetY 50
LedOffsetX 33
LedSize 14
_epoc_drive_j C:\erj
_epoc_drive_c D:\Psion\CM5mx\Backup\Internal
_epoc_drive_d D:\Psion\CM5mx\Backup\Lexar80
where "D" is the PC drive containing your backup folders (Yours will probably be "C") and the rest is the path to your backups.
The only catch is that this will not work if there are spaces or non-standard characters in the name of your Psion. If there are you will have to rename your Psion. You may be able to do this with Psiwin Machine Manager or you may have to completely uninstall Psiwin (ask if you need instructions how to do this - its not straightforward) and reinstall.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes, CHris

The only other thing you might need to know is that you must have keyboard tones switched on on the phone (a bug).

Answer to: Rolf, Guillaume
There exist OS-es in several different languages for the 5mx Pro. The original development Psions were RAM only design. A select group of developers was given 5mx Pro's with the OS of their own language loaded to remove the errors of the OS-es. You can see the apparent problems yourself:
1. The French OS supports an AZERTY keyboard. Your German 5mx Pro has a QWERTZ keyboard.
2. These were the beta OS's. They look all right, but they can contain bugs.
3. Where can you get such an OS?
One of the fellow Benelux members of Symbian.info seems to have arranged for himself quite a big collection of these OS's.
Contact me off-list Guillaume and I can ask him if he has a French OS. This still leaves problem 1 open, though.
Yours truly,
Thomas van der Zijden

I think you exaggerate, Rolf! This hasn't been an issue
since Office 95 upgraded to 97: Office 97 apps can read all
subsequent versions, so only those using Office 95, surely
a minority, are likely to have any problems. And those who
still have Office 95 after all this time and who receive
Office docs in email have no doubt already downloaded the

Subject: New Sharp Zaurus romours
Following recent discussions here on the limited range of HPC form-facor devices I spotted a mention of a new Sharp Zaurus in slashdot.org today.
Apparently this will be "a new high-end member of its Zaurus PDA family". To quote further...
"The company is showing a prototype of the device, which it has labeled a personal mobile tool, at its Ceatec booth and says the company hopes to put it on sale in Japan by the end of the year.
Unlike the current Zaurus model, which is designed to be held in one hand and features a screen that is longer in the vertical than horizontal direction, the new Zaurus unfolds like a notebook computer with the display in the upper half and a keyboard in the lower half."
This sounds like it could present an interesting alternative for people looking for relacements for current Psion machines. Anyone got any more info on sneak previews/pictures/specs etc? I did note with some interest that the screen is VGA resolution, which would seem to put it more into the sub-notebook category rather than PDA.

Rolf,
You bet it matters! It matters because I am proud to use a Psion for much of my day-to-day work. I believe it works better than anything similar on the market and is a tremendous piece of engineering design. I want to play my part in promoting a great product. I certainly wouldn't want to promote (say) Outlook Express in the same way because it too is a product I know well and believe to be a bit of a dog in many ways!
So, up to a point, I don't care too much about the recipient of my emailed wit and wisdom. I want to fly the flag for a great alternative to the mainstream computer platforms.
I do agree that it generally shouldn't matter to anyone whether I use one product or another but I do have the freedom to choose.
The above comment would be akin to me saying "does it matter that I could follow Rolf's progress round the UK recently, through postings to the EPOC digest?". The answer essentially was no, it was of some interest but hasn't changed my life but I can see no reason to take issue with your choice.

Steve Hodgson

I think I would have to back up Rolf's comments regarding Windows (and
not just CE and derivatives). Microsoft have NOT got to where they are
by having the best product on the market. They have built their way to
the top by smart acquisitions and business practice. They have never
innovated but have generally used new technology from others to their
own advantage. Look at how much of WindowsCE comes from Palm and Psion
platforms. How much of the desktop platform components comes from
comes from academic and Open Source software such as BSD.
Looking at the latest directions the company is moving in with
Palladium and, to a lesser extent, product activation, I really think
that anyone with any sort of interest in ethical business needs to
seriously consider the alternatives. The direction is tending towards
a restriction of what I can do with my hardware and the software that I
own and a narrowing of choices.
Disabling rant mode...

Subject: CronTab & running macros
Hi all!
I am not going to prolong the discussion on what CronTab can be used for - I do use it for some tasks I want automated. This posting deals with a question that has bothered me for some time and has to do with CronTab running macros. Hope to get some help from you - maybe the answer is so easy or obvious it slipped me by.
When CronTab wakes the Psion to run a macro at a pre-set time, it runs the macro and then goes into the background and switches the Psion off. If - for example - the macro contains bringing forward an application and executing something with or within that app, it is necessary to see to it that CronTab does not switch the Psion off before the execution of the app is through. In most cases this can be secured by inserting an OPL PAUSE statement at a proper place in the macro. You can set the parameter of the PAUSE statement (e.g. PAUSE 200) so that the the run of the macro does not finish before the app has terminated whatever it is doing.
However, sometimes it is not that easy to find the value for the PAUSE parameter - you don't know how long the app need to run before finishing or the timespan varies. From this you certainly can deduce that I am just an OPL amateur, but maybe there is some other way to handle this my problem. Is there a way to write the macro so that it can "check" that there is something going on" and therefore does not switch the Psion off? All comments are welcome.
Cheers and sorry for the long posting,
Jan G

Dear Trygve,
<< What should be mentioned is that 9600 is more like a theoretical transmission speed... >>
I'm not inclined to describe it as 'theoretical' as it implies that the 9600 bps is possible on paper but can't be realised in a practical implementation. While the 9600 bps of GSM is a practical figure as that's what the network and phones are capable of. You can pump data over the network at that speed for as long as you want.
<< Just thought I should muddy the waters a bit more... >>
The waters are clear when you know a bit of the technical backgrounds. Problem comes when you have to decide whether it's better to take a GSM, HSCSD or GPRS account and with which mobile network operator. It's not easy to create a mathematical formula that allows you to calculate at *exactly* which point GPRS starts to become cheaper than GSM.

Dear Ivan,
<< I've already installed all the updates I found (IrDA Update 1.00 and Mobile Connectivity Update 1.10) >>
Big mistake, I'm afraid, as the IrDA Update 1.00 is for the Message Suite application supplied with the EPOC Release 3 based Series 5. While you have an EPOC Release 5 based Series 5mx for which there's the Mobile Connectivity Update 1.10 and 2.00. It's this mix of ER3 and ER5 components that's the reason why The Dialer and Email crash.
The best way to get rid of this mess is:
- to backup all you documents, spreadheets and other data files
- to perform a hard reset which puts the 5mx back to ex-factory condition
- then to install the Mobile Connectivity Update 1.10 followed by any third-party applications you had installed previously.
- finally to restore your data files.
As for the Motorola L7089, below the correct modem definition:
Modem tab
- Name : Timeport L7089
- Speed : 115200
- Connect : Infrared
- Fax Class : Auto
Initialisation tab
- Init (reset) : AT&F&K5
- Data : (blank)
- Fax : (blank)
Advanced tab
- Flow : Software (Xon/Xoff)
- Terminal (DSR/DTR) : Unchecked
- Carrier (DCD) : Unchecked
- Type : Mobile
The things to note regarding the L7089 are:
a) When you have an early L7089 there's the chance that it has a weird bug. Switch the keypad beeps off and the integrated modem starts to behave incorrectly. Solution is to keep the keypad beeps on or to see whether you can still get a firmware update.
b) Early L7089 models also had the nasty bug of the integrated modem not being reset correctly after having used it to send SMS messages. You need to switch the L7089 off and on again before you can use it to access your mailbox and browse the web.
c) Faxing isn't possible with the L7089 as it lacks the required hardware. A software based solution is only available for Microsoft Windows.
<< And if anyone knows about any other e-mail client for the 5Mx, I'd be delighted to know about it >>
Have a look at XJMail which was written to handle Japanese double-byte characters and also handles SMTP authentication in version 1.29.

Dear Kevin,
<< However, *solely* from the financial point of view (and ignoring time), could I suggest the following ... >>
What your procedure does is determining the cost for that *one* GSM, HSCSD or GPRS call.
a) As Trygve mentions in another message, you have to reckon with protocol request-answer delays. The busier your ISP's servers the longer the time of the retrieval. And a longer time means a higher cost for GSM and HSCSD.
b) GPRS data speed is variable (also during the call) as you share bandwidth with other GPRS users. The more users at the time of your call the lesser your part of the bandwidth. It can be so busy that a GSM/HSCSD call would not only have taken less time but would also have been less expensive.
c) Transmission errors mean additional requests and the retransmission of the damaged packets. Which adds to the per data volume costs of GPRS as well as to the time of retrieval.
To get a realistic cost picture you'd have to repeat your procedure at various times during the day from various locations for a period of three to four weeks and average the resulting numbers.

ct-01-01-168.zip
You can download it from http://www.mvcsys.de/download
The programm can swap applications.
After starting the OPO you'll find an empty screen but the menu key works!
Some menu translations (it's in German):
Datei = File
Shell.ini auslesen = read shell.ini
Applikationen tauschen = swap apps
Beenden = Quit
I hope that helps. I think you have do do a soft reset after you did the swapping to activcate it but I'm not sure. And don't forget to backup shell.ini first!

I saw a posting in the old UPS5D giving a list of Ctrl+Number to

Astrid Stappenbeck mentioned a "button tip" file on a German web
site in a recent posting (I can't find it) which has the numbers. I
think it was in response to a question about accessing Spell. Since
Spell is not a silkscreen button, there's no number for it.

The email quoted a fragment of the digest (in HTML!) but also included a file photo.exe. Obviously, I didn't run the file but I think that other subscribers may need to watch out for this one in case it is widespread.

Subject: OPL ER5 SDK / IR & MS XP
Re: OPL ER5 SDK
Does anyone know where I can get the OPL ER5 SDK from? I've long ago lost the CDROM which came with my 5mx & I don't even remember if it was on there or whether I have to get it from Symbian's website.
I want to set up my PC so that I can run the emulator against a copy of my Psion 5mx's backed up files. I've been onto Symbian's website & registered for their 'partners' program, which they say is how you can get hold of it, but I've been all over Symbian's & Psion Teklogix's websites & I can't find the actual SDK itself anywhere.
Is it perhaps part of the ER6 SDK, which I think I saw on my travels?
Alternatively, if anyone has a fast connection & wouldn't mind emailing it to me, or uploading it to some webspace somewhere, I'd be extremely grateful.
Also, is there anything I need to know about installing & configuring it?

Re: IR & MS XP
Do you (or anyone else) know if there's any way that PsiWin can be used over InfraRed on Win2K? I found a GNU freeware utility which implements IrCOMM on a virtual COM port & after a lot of faffing around I managed to do a file transfer between my PC & my 5mx using an ACTiSYS serial InfraRed adapter, but I can't get PsiWin to work with it at all.

Subject: Virus
Hi Mike and others,
I find it an increadable thought that someone is sick enough to target a specific smallish digest like ours with only around 600 subscribers with a virus. Could you trace anything from the internet header ? (unless you downloaded it on your Psion.
Anyhow, as a precaution against virusses I use my Psion exclusively for my personal email. At least the chance of getting hit is extremely low and any damage done extremely small if you keep regular back-ups. But no-one actually reported yet having been hit by a real virus on a Psion.
Best regards,
Itamar

Subject: 081 is a virus???
Just received what purports to be digest 081. It is an empty e-mail with an attached "photo.exe". Having great faith and being totally foolish, I tried to open it. My Psion said "cannot open this type of file" (good Psion! good Psion!). Then the thought occurred, what a good way for a hacker to try his/her hand with an EPOC virus.
I could save the file and move it an to my Dell when I get up to Port Townsend (all household goods are packed). Not!!!
Is this an error on someone's part (if so you are forgiven), or is it virus generated?
If it's an error I assume we will have a retransmission?

Steve, there is a freeware application entiltled SignIt, which I use. It offers three preset signatures, the titles of which are shown on a toolbar. I use Name, Home and Office. The app. icon is not exactly prominent on my Extras Bar, away down amongst the "More" section really; I simply call it up using Macro5. Just checking now, I cannot find any "About" info, so I cannot tell you from where to download it if you are interested... so I am mailing you three files (.app, .aif and .mbm) which you may wish to try: just create a folder entitled /System/Apps/Signit in either C or D, place the said files therein, and see what you think. As I say, if you don't want it to be prominent on the Extras Bar, you can arrange to call up the app. by way of a macro if you see fit. Anyway, it is fairly unobtrusive, yet effective, so see what you think...
