So are you saying that you think Jotter was not as important to a majority of ER5 (or would be ER5) users as other things and hence it should have been left aside for those more important things - or that Jotter is just not a particularly important app or feature to you? IMO, it would have been foolish for Psion to have released a consumer-oriented handheld without a note-taking application in ROM.

Subject: Mac OSX - Psion 5mx connectivity

I have installed Trafic s5 (as mentioned here a week or so ago) on my OSX iBook, and (after installing the X drivers for my Keyspan USB-serial adapter) it seems to work OK. Its not perfect however, it has some quirky features,and I'm notthat keen to spend the registration key until it is a bit smoother running. And I have just spent out for EpocBackup, with the idea that I'd make zip archives of all my data and move them to the iBook via CF card (keeping a separate card just for this, and only having zip archives on it not big system trees to save the mac corrupting the card), and using jpl for transferring the odd single file. If I hadn't paid for EpocBackup I might well have paid for Trafic S5 instead.

Will play with it for a few more days till the 15 day trial runs out and then uninstall the X drivers so jpl (which has yet to come out in a X version) can get at the serial link).

Subject: Virus / SilkScreen Codes

Hello.

-------------------------VIRUS

I'm not an expert but a virus "xxxx.exe" is a C program compiled. (am I wrong?). Then the compilation is made on a machine or for a machine in particular. You could compile on a PC and it don't work on a UNIX machine and so on. This is the reason why a Psion is more secure.

However you must be careful with open all kind of programs and make backups. The Psion (5, 7, netbook) bears a ARM processor with RISC (R=reduced) architecture (PowerPC too), that is different to CISC (C=complex) of Intel and AMD architecture.

"C" compile over machine code only, and machine code is soported by newest generation processors family, thus a C program runs on a Pentium II it will run on a Pentium IV but the other way around is no always possible.

There are another that exploit program bugs of explorer,oulook,netscape.. and do thing that it is not authorized.

(perhaps I am wrong, It is only amateur knowledge, then get out me of mistake).

--------------------------CODES FOR SILKSCREEN

You could take it from this OPL progras. This codes are in the code for events:

PROC silkscreenCodes:

         GLOBAL ev&(16)

         DO

         GETEVENT32

         PRINT ev&(3)

         UNTIL 0

ENDP

Touch with your pen on a silk icon: menu, cut, zoom... if tap over "Word"

or another program you will must come back to OPL program from "system" (little window in task bar at top-right) "files/ open programs".

AH!  "Ctrl+Esc/on" to exit from OPL program.

Don't worry about another events they are "pen press","pen

release","program backwards"... Read only in range 10000.

The codes that I obteined:

Menu------>10000

Cut------->10001

Infrared-->10002

Zoom in--->10003

Zoom out-->10004

System---->10064

Word------>10065

............

Extra----->10072

Too ctrl+13=enter.... cursors,del...(0 to 32)

Someone know more tricks? I didn't know what I could use it directly from system.

Regards.

Subject: H/PC MACHINES / NEW GENERATION NETBOOK

Hi Guys,

Firstly my apologies for these rather late responses, but mysteriously # 83 was never sent to me. I have just received it via the kind offices of Michael Degn. Thank you Michael.

For Rolf B re H/PC machines:

It seems that I will have to remind you of what you wrote to # 72, that is: "It looks like Microsoft gave the frog his redundancy notice some time ago. Which wouldn't be surprising, given that H/PC now consists of a single HP model and a single NEC model."

Obviously the future of the H/PC platform is important for those who are considering it as an alternative to EPOC. Given that there are many more machines than the two you have mentioned, including some in the lucrative vertical market, it makes the possibility of H/PC being carried into the future, not certain, but more likely. By the way, HP have already announced that they intend futher development of the 7XX series, albeit under the IPAQ rather than the Jornada brand. Me, I don't care either way - my present and future machine is the netBook.

For Rolf B re new generation netBook:

You wrote: "What you're effectively looking for is the equivalent of a Microsoft

Windows based laptop that's Symbian OS driven. One that has Symbian

equivalent to Microsoft Office XP. I'm sorry, but I think you can forget

Psion-Teklogix to come with such a device. That's not the "business"

they're in."

Err, no, actually, I'm looking for a next generation netBook - I've been using a netBook for more than two and a half years now Rolf. I have very good relations with Psionet (RSA Psion Teklogix) and bought the machine after they marketed it to me. I speak to them frequently and know exactly what business they're in, in fact probably better than you do. The netBook already provides much of the functionality of a laptop - I'm asking for a bit more.

You also wrote: "There's no such thing as splash-proof IP3. The IP rating (Ingress Protection) of a device is defined by *two* digits. The first digit defines the protection against the ingress of solids. The higher the number the smaller the size of solid (particle) the device is protected against. The

second digit defines the protection against the ingress of liquids. Again,

the higher the number the better the protection.When you want to have a splash-proof netBook it needs to comply with the requirements of IP65 (which is equivalent to the hybrid NEMA 4/5 classification for our North America friends). It's impossible for a netBook to get an IP65 rating because the hinge mechanism prevents it getting a rating higher than IP30."

Well, wrong again I'm afraid. Firstly I wrote:"4.) Splash protection to IP3 level. (It already has an IP rating of 3 for protection against the ingress of solids.)"

In other words, I'm looking for an IP33 rating. which is "Protection of equipment against access by anything larger than 1/10 inch" (first 3 - WHICH IT ALREADY HAS) and "protection against rain or water spray at up to 60° angle" (second 3) By the way the IP65 that you quoted is "Complete protection against dust" (6) and "Protection against a low pressure water jet from any angle" (5). I'm not looking for that actually, IP33 will do nicely. I could send you a copy of the IP ratings table if it would clarify things for you.

Finally, you wrote: "In other words ... queue here for your copy of the Holy Grail."

Nice of you to say so, but aw shucks, I can't take all the credit ;-)

Hi Jan,

you can start your program with

r&=RunApp&:(...),

then check the status of this program with

LogOnToThread:(r&,ThreadStatus&)

WHILE 1

geteventa32 evst%,ev&()

iowait

IF ThreadStatus&<>&80000001

BREAK

ELSEIF Evst%<>-46

IF Ev&(1)=&401

p&=0

r&=KILLTASK&:(r&,p&)

BREAK

ENDIF

ENDIF

ENDWH

I use this procedure in the DigHandler. It waits, until RepEvMail is closed, when you press A to reply.

But I don't know, whether this works in a macro.

If you can say me which program you want to include, I will try to find a solution together with you.

Re: strange Corruption on CF cards

Hi sorry to hear about your problem, I had a similar problem a year or so ago. I bought a cheap 128 MB card from Scan .co.uk and although it worked fine the first time it would do exactly the same as you describe.

It would work fine with my iPaq or ixus. When I rang Scan and explained they agreed to swap it. I now have a new one which works perfectly. It seems there are some cards the Psion cannot handle?

Good luck

Subject: Mobile phone roaming  charges

Further to an earlier report a bout roaming charges from todays The Sunday Times in the UK :

"The European commissions is preparing to take action against mobile phone Companies that are alleged to have colluded to charge customers extortionate prices for using their phones abroad". The article continues to describe that after a warning in the next few weeks they will have 60 days to react. It is expected that they will get fines of 3 to 4% of the money they make from international calls. For Vodaphone that could be 80 million pounds. "Alongside fines, Mario Monti, the European competition commissioner, is expected to order a sharp cut in the cost of international calls. Britons using their mobile phone abroad typcically pay more than 80 pence a minute to receive a call that costs the telecom Companies less than 15 pence. Calls back to the UK are charged at 3x the rate locals pay for calls to the UK.  UK mobile Companies may well decide to drop their prices when they receive the warnings from the commission.

It looks like we can expect cheaper rates soon.

Answer to: Steve Hodgson

Re. Signature - The difference I suppose is that EPOC has been more or less discontinued and no-one will look for EPOC machines anymore after reading your signature. And in general, I think signatures on the digest should be as short as possible (but that's my own personal opinion).

Answer to: Jan R Gustafsson

Re. Crontab - Are you sure that Crontab does switch off before the the macro finishes to run ? I  only have one short macro in Crontab to bring my diary on the current day to the foreground at 4.00 am so that when I open it in the morning my diary is the first thing I look at. It always works without problems. Maybe you can enter in the Macro a switch-on command that will override Crontab ?

Personally my problem with Crontab is that it does not correctly reads the working days from the Psion settings and some months it will open files and/or programs set for week-days only in the week-end as well.

Subject: OPL SDK & the virus

Hi,

The OPL ER5  SDK is at <http://partners.psionteklogix.com/netpad-pdk/epoc_downloads.htm>. You'll have to register (free) and it's pretty big!

I got the virus but my machine are EPOC (almost impossible to infect) and Mac (with good up-to-date anti-virus software). I hope no-one actually got infected.

Itamar can't see the point in targeting this digest but I suspect that he, like me, cannot see the point in targeting anybody.

Even if this kind of spreading is built into the virus, someone deliberately built it in. It is fruitless trying to fathom the motives of such virus spreaders as they function at a very different level from us. The best we can do is support anti-virus groups and report infections to the appropriate groups/authorities. The same applies to inveterate spammers, etc..

This is the electronic equivalent of vandalism and I'm glad so few understand it.

Good luck,

Phil.

Subject: OPL-SDK

Hi,

you can find the OPL-SDK under http://www.mvcsys.de/download/oplsdk.zip [27 MB, it took half an hour to upload via ADSL]

But don't tell anybody else, because its barely legal to put it there...

Install:

Unpack the file to an empty directory and then map that directory to a single drive letter with subst (this is temporary for the install). Maybe this works from a directory as well but I'm not sure. It's better to istall from the temporary drive letter.

Map another drive letter to the installation directory which you must create in advance. Use the latter "drive" as the installation target.
