>> I fully agree with Arent that the 'new' HPC's from HP might be just wat I need. Win CE has well evolved, be it that other Win CE users need to reset (but without data loss) much more often than you do. One doubt though: the PDA market seems to shift from real PDA's to smartphones (which are too small and often too limited to my likings). And to that: Microsoft showed a keen interest (too keen!) for the 5T (TouTe TableTTE) form factor. The new 728 is a good sign, but I am afraid that in a few months the HPC form factor will definitively be killed. What are your opinions on that, Arent?<<
From what I have read so far will HP continue with this product and will
integrate it with the iPaq line it inherited from the merger , i.e make it
possible that everything developed so far for the iPaq will run on the
successor of the 7** line as well ( including the linux distros and
Qtopia/Opie )
WindowsCE on StrongARM has been improved considerably after it no longer
was the stepchild of the ARM developer community ( i.e people mentioning
WindowsCE are no longer being shot at dawn )
However , the threat of inexpensive ultra PC's is still hanging over it
and when big names like Dell ,HP , Fujitsu , NEC , as well as the usual
Taiwanese manufacturers enter that segment , it will probably be dropped (
When ultra's mature , it is however possible that HP develops one that
fits the current Jornada clamshell .. )
Current price point of EUR 999 to 1099 puts it on the endangered species
list ( can I say Transmeta's EUR 1000 target price for ultras based on
their reference design is the biggest threat to ANY high-end PDA , with
linux it is probably possibe to shave EUR 150 - 300 off of that )
Both the Jornada and the ultra pc make good companions for your psion ,
you could use epocconnect on the ultra and on the Jornada you could run
EmuraTerm or Peacemaker Pro for file exchanges ( I use EmuraTerm and Comms to exchange files between my 680 and OsariS )
Re : Soft Reset on WindowsCE
People reported that they reset their WindowsCE devices on a daily basis ,
I do this too , but in contrast to a perceived or real instability of this
environment there are other compelling reasons to do so , namely :
Checking the integrity of the file system , WindowsCE runs an fsck
immediately after reset , so no creeping corruption of your flash cards
Auto-calibration of the tochscreen
Bringing the backlicht up to full strength immediately after start-up
Re-initialise any card inserted in the device
Re: Psion and WindowsCE
Yes , Psion is now finally moving away from Epoc as its main operating
system on its handhelds , sales of the netPad with WindowsCE are reported
brisk and there are reports in the newsgroups that the revised build 158 (
wich apparently has been pulled from the 'net ) is the very last as far as
Psion is concerned of R5
The Reg has the story at :http://www.theregus.com/content/54/26590.html
The netPad WindowsCE pages are at :
http://www.psionteklogix.com/netpad-pdk/wince_downloads.htm ( Free
Registration required ) (Surprisingly it should have been known that Psion is going WinCE ON THE
26/03/02 as that is the release date of the documentation , the SDK is
dated 16/08/02 and the user manual is from 02/10/02 )
This brings me to my last point
Re : Future of Symbian
yes , this development as well as the pending release of the first
WindowsCE-based smartphones -wich will use the same silicon as Nokia's
7650/3650 - will completely change the mobile phone playing field
Ericsson will probably totally disappear as a manufacturer/vendor , Sendo
and Samsung will vie for the first place , Motorola and Siemens for a very
distant second , Dell will probably enter this market too ( can I say $199
PocketPC ? ) and Nokia will become ( yes this will be monotonous ) a
third-tier vendor
It is the mobile operator that is now determining what goes into a
smartphone and this bodes ill for the non-embedded versions of R6/R7 None
of the new licencees have bought the full implementation ,Nokia , Ericsson
and Motorola are the only ones that have full licences ( i.e beyond the
kernel and wireless stacks ) and only Ericsson and Nokia have actually
brought devices to market ( Ericsson R 380 ,Nokia 9210/9290 , 7650 and
3650 )

Hi Owen,
Are you using ExAb? I'm working on similar functions as the excellent CoCoPaPa macro to be included in ExAb. A next release will include new hotkeys Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V and Ctrl+X for sequential copy, paste and cut of multiple clips. If you're interested you may subscribe to the ExAbEtAl mailing list to be warned when the new release will be uploaded. See my website (address below) for details.

Yeah this is an ideal solution for bitmaps, but the original query was
(I think) enquiring about convertions to the likes of jpegs, pngs etc.
I've also never got round to trying xnview, just heard it praised
widely and recommended by colleagues. I may give it a try again soon -
it runs from the command line on BeOS and I always found this a little
off-putting somehow. I may have to shave off my unix beard and stop
wearing sandals after remarks like that!

Subject: DSTEdit (and other essential apps)
Just wondered if any digest subscribers use this excellent text editor
and know whether the developer Dave Spooner is still active on the
Psion scene? I've emailed him a few times over the last few years but
never managed to get a reply. The website at Makesure services seems
not to have been updated now for a while so I wonder if any of the
other applications are still supported.
The application was one of the first third party text editors available
back in the early days when there was no Symbian text editor and no way
for text files to be 'associated' in the System screen. Even after
about 5+ years of use I've still not found anything to get close.
One of the earlier postings to the digest was asking what applications
people most used on their Psion. For me, there are a number of
applications that are a must for a PDA - either provided by native
applications or third-party products. The first of these is a good
database - nothing fancy, just a nice flat database, while Data on EPOC
is good, I really enjoy PsiDat despite the learning curve!
Next essential for me is a good text editor, hence this subject.
One final absolute essential application for me is that some level of
encryption is available to allow me to carry reference info like card
details, Passwords etc safely.

Steve Hodgson

socket, replacing the cable from the modem to the wall socket with the
appropriate cable, bought in a local electrical store. Sadly it didn't
work! ....<<
If the modem won't dial, I believe Stephan Block is on the right track,
as well as the one to/from Lyon at 270 klicks / 170 mph / n x Britrains!
However, this time I think the Frogs and les Roast-Beef are on the
"wrong" side together!
French and British phones use the outer of the four wires in US type
RJ11 telephone connectors that plug into the phones, against the inner 2
wires used elsewhere. (Maybe some later Brit phones use the inner 2
wires, but certainly many use the outer.)
Thus if you use the lead out of a French phone, it will not work in a
standard modem.
However the French phone sockets supplied without a joined lead, which
just have the female RJ11 socket, are wired normally.
The answer is to use a French telephone plug into which you plug a
standard US type phone cable with male RJ11 connectors at either end.
These are available in France and elsewhere.
This happened again last weekend at a lovely French hotel (Michel
Guerard's at Eugenie-les-Bains) - the lead from the hotel phone did not
work, but one with a separate RJ11 was OK.
The same is true of other phone equipment bought in UK influenced places
- our Panasonic fax bought in Hong Kong must be connected using a UK or
French type lead, else no dial tone.

Hi all (blush...)
Thanks to a suggestion from Kate, I managed to establish why my Psion couldn't pick up any messages from my ISP POP mailbox - it was because there weren't any messages there! I had activated the mail forwarding facility to a web based email system when I went on a trip abroad recently - and had forgotten to switch it off...
A good example of "USER ERROR: Replace user and press any key to continue.." Doh!!!
At least, although feeling stupid, I'm back in mobile e-business!

Owen, maybe too radical, but a switch to Mario Collado's Assistant freeware would make that possible and also let you do (almost) everything else that Merlin or Macro5 can do.

Subject: Onscreen keyboard for WindoZe (OT)
Howdy!
Would anyone here know if there is such a thing as an onscreen keyboard available for WindoZe? (I know there is for EPOC) I'm looking for a small keyboard on the screen that I can type on using the mouse. It should preferably be quite small and have the ability to be hidden, leaving only a small icon on screen to click on when I need it. It must of course have the ability to float over any other software and transfer keystrokes to that software as if they were typed on the normal keyboard.
The reason I'm asking is that I use the Toshiba for chart plotter software on the boat. There is a very limited amount of typing, typically naming routes etc, so during any passage, I would seldom type more than maybe 10 - 15 characters. It would be nice to be able to use a waterproof LCD screen in the cockpit and leave the laptop in a protected location.
Any suggestions for a waterproof pointing device would also be welcome. I've tried using an external glidepad wrapped in thin plastic. It works fine most of the time, but gets confused if my fingers are wet. Touch sensitive LCD screens are very expensive waterproof ones probably out of my league, and might suffer from the same problem.
PS. As this is OT for the EPOC list, I suppose off list replies are in order.

Euan, what do you mean by 'Psion format' ?
I use on my Psions RealMaps. The .MBM file format is used for it's maps.
Psion's BMCONV.EXE converts Windows .BMP maps for use on a Psion.
See www.realmaps.co.uk for the Realmaps app and

Answer to: Thomas van der Zijden
Re.: Modem cable - Well, some years ago I tried to connect my modem the same way at home and it did not work. After I brought home a modem cable from work it did work. The problem was clearly the cable. It might well have had to do with the 2/4 contacts.
Answer to: Bill Fuggle
Re.: Symbian 7 - I remember years ago when the Psion was introduced in the USA how everybody on the Compuserve Psion forum was saying they used bad marketing concepts. If it was clear to the public I never understood why it was not clear to Psion. As several others wrote I think Symbian is mainly interested in the huge mobile telephone and less so the PDA market. And as they don't produce machines anyhow it will be up to third parties to introduce these. Today such a machine will have to be truly a miracle machine to upset the powers to be (Palm and MS).
Answer to: Andy Salmon
Re. Virus - The subscribers data base is kept on a Psion, in fact the total digest is handled on Psion's only. If one of the subscribers is infected with a virus, your diving to the background will be too late ... <G>
And Kate, thanks for the virus advice, but I suppose the best advice today is to use a good antivirus program to stop the virusses before they hit the email program.
Answer to: Euan Mee
Re. Batteries - My calculation would be totally different. I changed my batteries on my 5MX every 3 to 4 weeks, so let's say 3 weeks. That means 35 batteries per year. A box of 100 batteries woluld accordingly keep me covered for just under 3 years. After 3 years, who knows what PDA I will have ? So why to spend more money now to buy a charger and batteries ?
Answer to: Dave Limbrick
Re. DOS - There was a program to emulate DOS on a Psion, but I don't think it wil run on the REVO as you would probably not have enough memory and disk space.
Answer to: Sussan S
Re. Virus - Hi Sussan, good to see you are still with us, trust all is well with you. The digest did not let a virus through, that is impossible as it is handled as said exclusively on Psion's. Most likely one of the subscribers was infected and the virus somehow read some of the email addresses in the digest and used these to spread the virus on. Unfortunately virusses are part of life today and if you don't have a good antivirus program, don't open any email without being sure it is safe to be opened.
Answer to: Ian Warburton
Re. Sunrise/set - the WORLD map of the Psion gives the sunrise / sunset times for any city mentioned in it's database. Do you need more than that ?

I've never used Assistant, so don't know anything about its capabilities. Does it support application- and file-specific toolbars? Anyhow, having paid for Merlin, (a long time ago), it seems a waste to abandon it. I remember back when I got my first S5 classic, I tested every software title available. Now a few years later, that simply isn't possible...

Hi,
I am trying unsuccessfully to send mails from my Psion5 via an O2 mailbox.
I have a mobile with these folks and at the same time an e-mail account. I can read the mailbox, so the access, login and password must be right? I have inserted the SMTP and POP3 server names that they provide. Everything seems to be alright.
However, sending mails gives me the message: 'Email message has an invalid ""To", "CC" or "Bcc" address'.
Any special formats that are supposed to be used? Any smart tests that can be done to check out what is going wrong here?
