<< I have been happily using my Mako to access emails from my orange.net email account using my Orange Nokia 6210e for some time now. As Orange has announced the ending of orange.net in 2 or 3 weeks time....>>

It is my understanding that in the near future Orange are withdrawing their ISP service for connecting to the internet. They are not withdrawing their "Email" service and both SMTP and POP3 servers will remain in operation. However, as you will no longer be able to connect with Orange as an ISP,

use of their SMTP server for *sending* mail will require "SMTP Authentication" which is not supported by the Psion. This means you will still be able to retrieve your mail from Orange's POP3 server but will have to connect to the internet with a different ISP and send mail with the different ISP's SMTP mail server. You can still send messages with your Orange email address if that's what you normally do.

<< I use a 6210e that has a built-in modem and connects with your Psion with Ir.>>

....and as the "e" suffix indicates an "Orange" phone presumably you are using HSCSD for a 28.8k connection?

<< I've bought a Psion 56K travel modem to use with my Revo Plus and have noticed, when trying to view web pages via Opera, that the actual data transfer rates are in the order of 1-2KBps rather than 56K.>>

The data transfer rates you are seeing may well be related to the time taken by the Psion to render pages rather than the ability of the modem to shift the data :-)

I very rarely use a Psion to web browse but the 56k Travel Modem for email retrieval is fairly fast in my experience.

Yes, the best tip is: don't try Opera! IMO, you will only run into trouble.Opera for the Epoc platform is not stable and if you suceed in installing ityou will most certainly run out of memory or experience unexplainable abortsor hangs. Furthermore, Opera can not handle the modern secure banking sites, which otherwise would be one argument for using it.

I can't possibly agree with Jan on this matter.

I've used Opera on my 5Mx - both v3 and v5 with no trouble other thanperhaps sometimes overloading the machine

with too many web pages - easily done with GPRS since they download soquickly!

As for Opera not handling secure bank sites. I use my machine to regularlymove money around from my Barclays UK site.

However, if some people are having trouble with Opera, then I must bow tothat. Perhaps different build machines and software

versions can stack up with the odds all being unfavourable - I've just beenone of the lucky ones.

G'day everyone - I'm new to the list and am still learning heaps. Thanks for all the tips you guys are willing to share. Can anyone help me delete "dead" icons from my Extras Bar? Somehow I've got a duplicate icons for "Web", one of which does not open the browser - simply gives me a "Not found" message.

Also is anyone aware of any good software for Psion for high school teaching - admin tools etc?

Many thanks

Answer to: Stephan Block

Re. Modem cable - They are the same as telephone cables but for the connection to the plug, as you write yourself. Some telephone cables are wired differently. The cable coming with the modem is a modem cable, but replacing it will not always work. Many years ago I bought in the Netherlands a small connection piece to connect two RJ11 plugs together. In hotel rooms (if the system is not digital) I take out the telephone wire from the telephone side and connect it with this little connector to the modem cable of the modem. Never gives a problem.

Re. Synchronise Psion - Last week I synchronised my Outlook clients database with my Psion. First of all be aware the file cannot be a shared one on a server but has to be a private one. I only synchronised the contacts to an empty Psion data file (to have all the business contacts with me on the road). YOu have to synchronise it with the right folder en file name, something like \Public files\favorites\Contacts (that is where I put my copy). I do this once every few months and it always works.

Re. Demise of orange.net - In which country do you live ?  In the UK Freeserve will work fine and does not cost anything. There are other free ones that will work as well. Maybe best to have a look at Mike's website at http://www.mikemcc.net/.

Answer to: Ed Vesterberg

Re. Rechargable AAs - I use now a S7. However, I always used disposables with my 5MX to abt. 2.2 to 2.3 V and never had a problem with writing to my CF card. When it stopped writing to the CF that was a sure sign to replace them. But than, I have all programs on the CF and all files on the C disk so I tend to write very little on the CF card itself. Backing up I do to  a PC.

Answer to : Euan Mee

Re. Rechargable AAs - Well, I used my 5MX mainly connected to an adaptor at work and at home, that's why I used the batteries a lot less.

Answer to: Alan R Morris

Re. GSM v. GPRS  - You write "if you can afford GPRS". I think GSM is not exactly cheap either, and if  you don't have any free minutes I think it is hardly cheaper than GPRS as you need a lot more time connected. And with GPRS you can keep connected while reading something without being charged.

Re. Replacing 5mx Screen Cable - Sory to hear you have this problem. Yes, you can order the part form POS Ltd. at www.posltd.com in the UK if you live outside the UK. There are instructions how to do this somewhere on the net bu tI don't know the website address. Personally I would send it in for repair and not take the risk to destroy my Psion beyond repair.

Answer to: Iván

Re. Citymaps - Which version do you use ? On the London map I got with Streetplanner millenium (2000) surely all the tube stations are there, you can find them with the find function. I've got an overlay with a lot of speedcamera positions in NW London and some other parts (over 250 cameras), London at night and all theatres.

Subject: Rechargable AAs

I had no problems with corrupt CF cards and low battery power. The 5mxand mc218 gave a warning and would not write to the CF if the power wastoo low (<2.2v). Unlike the series 5 where it gave no warning and woulddefinitely corrupt the CF card.  I used NiCad Batteries with theirnotorious sudden voltage drop and still had not problems.  I would justuse them until they died and swap them at that point.

You will note this is all in past tense as all my machines have died(screen cable x6) and I think I will have to go for the Dell PPC machine- US$250 new with two card slots and all the bits seems like a goodoption.  I will miss the keyboard, any advice on alternatives gladlyreceived.

Hope this reassures you, I recommend you back up your CF card though.

Best Wishes

Wayne

Subject: Opera/Screen Cable/Rechargable AAs

Hi,

Opera - I have read many criticisms of it but it works well for me on both my Psions. I rather think it's up to the prospective user to try as it seems to have problems on some Psions and not others.

Screen Cable - I think you can't change the cable on it's own however competent you are. The cable is apparently part of the screen assembly and not a separate item.

Rechargeable AAs - For years now I have been charging ordinary Duracells in my Battery Manager Ultra though someone apparently had a battery blow up in one. I did a little research on this as I don't want a blow-up in my flat!

Certain batteries are made not to take a recharge and may explode if you try. If I remember correctly they release a flammable gas in reaction to the attempted charge through a one-way one-time valve. The battery manager is meant for ordinary valveless alkalines and I believe it is now only available in the UK in the Innovations mail order catalogue. I only use Duracells now. On these it works. It worked with Sony batteries too.

Good luck,

Phil.

Subject: Tinycalc - new calculator software for ER5

To all ER5 users.

I have just released my new calculator software for ER5. It's called Tinycalc, has an on-screen keyboard and runs on all ER5 machines (Revo, Revo Plus, Series 5mx, Series 7/netBook, netPad, Ericsson MC218 and Diamond Mako).

Tinycalc only occupies about 14k of disk space (excluding helpfiles).

If anyone would like to try the software its available from:

To Simon:

I have bought the CF at the following retail store:

Reise & Fotowelt

Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 213

D - 47179 Duisburg - Walsum

Phone: +49 203 991844

Fax:   +49 203 991846

Email: ReiseundFotowelt

Cost was EUR 820,00 incl. VAT of 16%.

At the same store I have also bought a Sandisk 512MB Ultra at EUR 359,00 incl. VAT of 16%.

I have not yet encountered any other place with a lower price.

Generally speaking one can say the bigger, the slower; especially opening and closing of programs. Other than that I would rather go for the SanDisk 512MB Ultra.

Hope this helps.

I am also having trouble with S7 calibration, despite a visit to psion. I have to do a system re-set about once a day - it would be nice to hear from Psion if there is a solution. It does seem to be the recent build of S7 as my other one, a very early model, does not have the problem peter heseltine

Hi John,

Orange.net are ending their dial-up but if you have GPRS can still use orange services and email. Why not upgrade your Nokia 6210e to a 6310e which has GPRS or one of other orange GPRS phones. I have the t68 but a colleague is happy with 6310e.

From: Stephan Block

Subject: Re: Rechargable AAs

Hello,

Here is my 2 cents regarding the use of rechargeable batteries. I use them ever since I got my first 5mx (I'm at the second now, due to the famous screen cable problem). For me the main reason to use them was that I don't want to produce huge piles of toxic waste. I have several sets (I don't use them exclusively in my Psion, but also in other equipment) of NiMH rechargeables (made by GP), from 1500 to 1800mAh. According to the Psion battery info, they give me between about 1000 and 1300mAh before the battery low warning shows up, which means about 18 to 22 hours of continous use, which in turn translates to about one / one and a half week of usage from one recharge. I always carry at least one recharged replacement set with my Psion, and I change them as soon as I get the battery low warning. Although this happens quite frequently during writing to the CF card (since this is a relatively power-hungry process), I have not yet experienced any CF card corruption. The Psion just tells me "main battery too low to write to CF", then I change the batteries and hit the "retry" button. In fact I haven't had any problems at all due to my use of rechargeables, and I largely prefer this approach over the built-in battery of e.g. the Revo, since it gives me greater flexibility. In my opinion however it is important to scrupulously respect the battery low warning and change batteries immediately as soon as the warning shows up.

Best regards

Stephan
