Most places in Europe, you can BUY a basic GSM phone for around 50 Euros with a pay as you go SIM card with about 20 Euros worth of credit on it. Not tri-band, but it'll work anywhere in Europe if you just need a phone. Some may be locked to the operator whose simcard you buy it with, so check this if you intend to use the phone in another country than the one you buy it in.

You might have to pay a little more if you need something that connects to your Psion.

No, just add the appropriate settings to the Data string in Control Panel / Modems.

For 14.4kbps enter:

AT+CBST=14,0,1

For 28.8kbps enter

AT+CBST=16,0,1

HSCSD is only available with Orange in the UK but, if your phone is the 6210e, presumably you are on Orange.

Subject: Series 7 Woes

Dear Friends,

Two weeks from tomorrow I leave for my annual trip to Sikkim and Nepal, two weeks later than last year.  And today, one year almost to the day, my S7 once again refuses to make connection with the mains adapter.  The unit is receiving no power, no light and the battery's not being charged.  At least this time I'm still in the States and not fuming in Nepal like last year and I have my good old 5mx.  Strange stuff has been happening, not just the modem that makes me think the mother board is acting up, again.  Hope they get it right and in time for the trip...  any words of wisdom?  Remember I'm in the US.  I'm even wondering if I should wait til I return and buy a Netbook instead.  I'm interested in a Psion that can be used as a stand alone.  I don't require many bells and whistles, the S7 was fine but it seems the Netbook will continue to get support for a while

longer?

TIA

Regarding Kevin Thorne's comments on the EPOC Digest:

My battery life was about 2 days, but after 4 months it has gone down to 1 day.  About 1 - 3 hours computer use and 60 minutes of call useage per day.

I am doing more emails, IR, and internet lately to btring it up to 50-60- minutes.....

This my 4th phone since July - when I purchased the original one.  I don't think it is designed for remodelers or handymen, or people in the trades./

It is not durable for my use.  I am quite careful, however.  I have used a Psion 5 since 1998.  They lasted about a year, typically.  When the PDA's are working well, I don't use a laptop or desktop except when doing CAD, internet, or backups.

Since I am not in my home office often - the PDA becomes my main computer.

But, now I have to carry the computer every where I go because I depend on my cellphone so greatly.....it  was better to leave the mini-computer in the worktruck and walk to it as needed.  I still enjoy the screen and the connectivity in spite of the extreme grief over the malfunctioning units.   I *am* getting used to the inferior keyboard after 3 to 4 months (Psion 5 keyboard is the greastest!) and now I can type estimates and reports quickly on the Nokia Communicator with about 90 percent accuracy.

I would still by a Psion5 with a color screen ( or a fantastic B & W screen and a GSM  IR phone if I could buy one.  I do want to stick with the EPOC/Symbian OS.

Hi Chris... and welcome to the list!

Well, I have used a 6210 and 5mx successfully for HSCSD, and the settings for the Psion were as follows:

MODEM

Name: Nokia 6210 (HSCSD)

Speed: 115200

Connect Via: Infrared

Fax Class: Auto

INITIALISATION

Init (reset) string: AT+CHSN=4,0,0,0 (or 6,0,0,0 is even faster but less stable)

Data init string: AT+CBST=0,0,1

ADVANCED

Flow control: Xon/xoff

Terminal detect: not ticked

Carrier detect: not ticked

Modem: mobile

Hope this works :-)

The CD jacket for 2.3.3 says, "for Windows 95/98/2000/NT"

It's rather odd as copying the files works OK, they just error within a backup.

Answer to: Chris Edwards

Re. Nokia 6210 & MX5 - AFAIk the only thing you have to do is to arrange a HSDC connection with your provider, and set the right init string (which I don't know, sorry).

Answer to: Alan R Morris

Re. MBMview - I use MBMView 4.12 and do not have any memory problems on my S7.

Answer to: Douglas Brown

Re. SPACEHOG - In short, every time you back-up and files in the back-up folder are not present on the Psion anymore, these files are moved to Arc folders, each time down the line up to Arc06, after which they are deleted. You can however set the number of Arc folders in Psiwin. As to your full disk problem, i suggest you run over the folders on the PC and delete the files you don't need anymore, and than do a restore.

Subject: MINI-CLAMSHELLS

Hi Guys,

Thought some of you may be interested in these comments by Conrad Blickenstorfer (Editor-in-Chief) about mini-clamshells in the October 2002 Pen Computing magazine. They were made in a reply to a reader who was bemoaning the fact that he has been unable to find a suitable replacement for his Psion S5.

Quote:

I think you hit the nail on the head. A lot of people feel the way you do. And there really isn't a good replacement for the old Series 5. Personally, I have been using CalliGrapher/Transcriber handwriting recognition for many years, so it works for me - and I also like the thumb-boards as long as they are done well, as on the RIM Blackberry 957.

I think what happened is this: Based on the great success of the old HP 95/100/200 micro clamshells and the flopping of the earlier PDAs such as the Newton, Microsoft decided to go with the clamshell form factor when they introduced Windows CE in 1996. However, those devices turned out to be underpowered and not nearly as competent as the old HPs were in their day. I think it was a combination of uninspired hardware and underpowered software. When Microsoft finally started to get it right with "Jupiter", the larger versions of those handhelds and rev 3.0 of Windows CE, they got cold feet because those machines were a potential threat to low-end notebooks with their much more lucrative Windows licences. So they "crippled" those devices on purpose and let them die. That, incidentally, gave Psion a huge opportunity to take over the the US micro-clamshell market. They halfheartedly tried with their Revo and the Series 7, but either didn't have the marketing budget or were just too boneheaded. As a result, many find themselves in your predicament.

Unquote.

successor is likely to become the 68** series

In that model Nokia has seriously cut back on features , memory has been

reduced to 4 Mbyte  , the text editor is stripped back to a simple

notetaker with a filesize limit of 3000 characters , all Web capabilities

have been taken away from the browser , no built-in spreadsheet and no

ability to run native Symbian applications

No triple band ( i.e separate versions for African/Australian/Eurasian and

Nort-/South-American markets )

Apparently mobile operators want to offer many of the old Communicator's

features over their networks so that they collect monthly as well as per-

minute and per kilobyte usage charges instead of an one-off up-front

payment ( less up-front cost but higher running costs . both for the end-

user and the operator )

To Rolf Brunsting

Yes , applause and thanks for Rolf , both for his in-depth and expert dig in Psion's recent history and his prompt comments on the latest breaking news on Sendo's decision to scrap the Z100 and go for Symbian and the Series 60 platform

They mentioned however on their site that it will take several months to move over to that platform , a time frame wich will give Ericsson the opportunity to roll out the P800 ( or even a revised successor -as they did with the T 36 , wich was lambasted for not having GPRS and Bluetooth. Ericsson then revised that model and finally released it as the T 39 M  ) and Nokia to add more Series 60-based models to its line-up

Reports on Finnish radio's Swedish-language channel Vega and on the usual Net sites claim that one million copies of the 7650 have been sold since it started shipping in july and that handset sales in Finland are brisk as people upgrade to the newer color-screen MMS - capable handsets

It is expected that over a million new phones went over the counter in Finland alone  this fall

One article on the 'Net mentioned the mobile gear manufacturer's fear of being dominated by MicroSoft the same way as the PC industry

It is in this light we may see Sendo's defection from the evil empire , it is interesting to note that on the PocketPC ,alternative environments are reaching mainstream status too , of the new players that entered this market one ( SHARP ) opted for Linux , two (palm and sony ) opted for PalmOS 5 and only Dell and VieuwSonic opted for WinCE

In the emerging class of secure PocketPC devices of the two offerings nearing production status , one runs Linux ( a development by IBM and a small Hong-Kong - based outfit ) , only HP's iPaq-based offering will run WindowsCE

Psion/Symbian historicians now have something to munch over in the coming weeks , so Rolf , if you can dig up more , let it roll ..

On another note , it was sales far below expectations that led to the canning of the 'fox so that story about Psion pulling the licence causing sales to implode can now be safely withdrawn

That other story , the one behind the release of the s3mx because the original chip was no longer available is also a very interesting one ,I have never read elsewere

Subject: Runyon (OT), Duplicate Files, Latin (OT) & Defence

Hi,

Shakespeare/Runyon

Sorry Susan, you're absolutely right, I was thinking of West Side Story. Unfortunately I find most musicals, stage or screen, too contrived for my taste; the same applies to opera (that's not a criticism, just taste; I love most music, particularly jazz; I tend to keep my eyes closed to avoid distractions).

But wasn't Runyon a guy too? And would he have minded being confused with Shakespeare?  : • )

Over-Restore

Douglas Brown had problems with an "over-restore". John Boyce, better known for his series 3(a/c/mx) programs, has several 5(mx) utilities and *all* his Psion programs are freeware. He certainly has written a duplicate-file-finder for EPOC machines.

As I have a 3a too (anyone got a disk-drive for it they don't want?) perhaps I am more familiar with him than most 5ers. His software for the 3 series was very widely used and I think some of his 3(a/c/mx) utilities haven't been written for EPOC yet. In his own, quiet, way John is a Psion hero!

It's all Greek to me

Alberto, old friend, my copy of "Asterix the Legionary" says 'TIMEO DANAOS ET DONA FERENTES' - I was told it means 'Beware of Greeks bearing gifts' though 'Danaos' doesn't actually meam 'Greeks'. Am I the only person to use "Asterix" as a reference book?

I remember Alasdair Manson

Alasdair has contributed generously. I have disagreed with him and agreed with him. As far as I remember he hasn't always toed the company line nor has he insisted he (or Psion) is (are) invariably right. His disclaimer was courteous and may have been necessary. Arent didn't insult him, he just named him as a Psion employee who wrote in public fora. That may have been poor etiquette but it was certainly nothing more.

Take care,

Phil.
