Hi

To end all speculation about Liewe de Vries, may I suggest that one of the Dutch readers of this Digest places  a small telephone call to his address? I don't think this is an invasion on privacy, as he must have given his address to many of the users of his MBMprogram. Anyhow he supplied me with it, but it is a little bit costly to phone from S.E.Asia.

Subject: E Drive on S7

Hi All,

I couldn't live without my PCMCIA adaptor and 128Mb CF which is almost permanently installed in my netbook as my E Drive (obvious exception is during PCMCIA modem use). I prefer the portability of this combination to using the D drive as I can remove the whole adaptor rather than the CF card and slot it straight into the PCMCIA slot on my notebook PC for data transfer. It also enables me to arrange data more conveniently with the E drive being used for more "temporary" data. I doubles my storage capacity "onboard" and finally, it gives me a 2nd option to reboot from in case of disaster.

Besides confirming the power supplied to the slot and intended adapter, all you need to do is buy 1 x adapter and 1 x high capacity CF card.

Regards,

Tim

I use a LEXAR PC card adaptor (with a standard compact card) in the right hand slot when not using my card Modem. If pushed well home E drive should be picked up as you switch drives (Ctrl Q ) without any further adjustment

Re: netBook v 7 - You forgot to mention that the netBook is considerably more expensive. So I would say rich men use a netBook ... <G>.

Re. Phone Charges in US - It appears that the USA indeeds runs behind Europe in this matter. I remember that years ago Israel had the same system of charging for calls and charging for airtime for both incoming and outgoing messages. They meanwhile switched to the European system and I suppose eventually the USA will follow as well (not charging for incoming calls). Using a mobile phone abroad is still very expensive in Europe and I undestand the European commission is currently checking this matter to bring these prices down.

Unfortunately it is correct that Lieuwe de Vries died unexpectedly early November 2002. Someone sent me the following :

The author of MBMview (and Busyview), Lieuwe de Vries, died suddenly

begin November 2002. See also a very impressing in memoriam on the

website of his scouting group: http://www.granaet.nl/Lieuwe/index.html

It is in Dutch, but some of the memories and poems are in English.

Apparently was he very well liked by his friends and the numerous young

persons he lead and trained during the last 25+ years. May he rest in

peace.

I sent in a message to the Chairman of his scout group with a small memoriam in the name of Psion users, telling them that he was well known all over the world due to his Psion programming.

Hi Itamar,

Could you possibly insert the following (which has been squeezed out in #120) into next digest ?

Thanks.

"Hello to all

Re: Netbook or Laptop

I have been using (and enjoying) a 5mx for 3 years now, together (but with less enjoyment) with a desktop PC (under XP) as backup and internet connection/invoicing/text typing, as I need a bigger and more contrasted screen than the 5mx's one. I would appreciate being able to work in other places than at my own office and home, where customers can lend me printers/fax/modems or even let me snap my portable computer onto their network. I read that the Netbook (1 410 ? in France) has recently got more in terms of connectivity: how does it compare with a PC laptop in this field ? Shall I have to install Psiwin every now and then ?

The other approach could be, say, a Toshiba 1100- Z8 at 1 350 ?  (incl 20% taxes) with CD engraver, DVD reader,V90 modem, Ethernet, XP Pro...but no serial port to connect the 5mx !

Anyone for his own experience ?

Hi Digestives,

I have PsiWin running perfectly under MS XP with my S5 classic, and I also have a copy of the emulator (ER5 only, can't find ER3 on Psion's site, any suggestions ?) running.

My problem is that I can't get the emulator to read my backup folder, it insists on using its own folder, despite having changed to file location in the Emulator's ini file - anybody else had this problem ?

Regards,

Jason

Does anyone know if there is any info on the possibility of Bluetooth support for the rumoured "New Generation" netBook?  Or indeed, any info on this rumoured netBook upgrade in general as everything has gone quiet recently on this?

Any CF card that works in the D: drive should also work if inserted in a PCMCIA-CF adapter and stuffed into the E: drive.

There are also (mostly older) PCMCIA flash cards of varying sizes that works well.

(I have a few from 2MB to 12MB that came with older HP PDA's, and they all work OK)

PCMCIA SRAM cards does NOT work.

The same for PCMCIA hard drives or SCSI cards.

There's also rumours of users manageing to use PCMCIA-Smartmedia or PCMCIA-SD adapters in the E: drive, but I don't have any so can't say for certain.

Got it the first time round.

Now you know why your friend gave it to you...

I haven't studied the power requirements of the latest CF size network cards, though, but I don't think they're much better. (Probably not supported anyway)

How come none of the consumer rights activists or groups have tackled this?

Or do the telemarketeers have that much power?

And as an American friend told me, even if you DON'T answer, the time until the one on the other end hangs up is billed to you...

The 'killer-app' for a Symbian based communicator?

A program that checks the callers number against a list of known annoyances and hangs up on them automatically...

(I don't have a communicator, so... )

You need to back up data and agenda and synchronise them with Outlook

or other prog supported by epoc connect. The cd with 7650 comes with nokia connect which will synchronise with 7650 via bluetooth or irda.

You may have to hack the windows registry to get it to work,

apparently. Or you can send individual items as vCal or vCard via bluetooth (which is what I did from a Mac). Unfortunately a whole diary or contacts vCal or vCard, although accepted as a Bluetooth message,

only puts in first date/contact so you have to send each diary entry or contact singly.

Had to hard reset (*#7370#) my 7650 yesterday due to corrupt mail :-(

so I know the pain of doing this.

My P5 classic has been exhibiting increasing signs of screen cable failure, and is now not functional.  I have thus ordered a Handspring Visor Neo which hopefully will meet my needs (Calendar, Contacts, to do lists, alarms).

What a great resource this digest is and has been for years.  I will continue to subscribe for some time yet.
