This is a neat program but two caveats.
i. The link below got me to the home page but the file that downloads is corrupted. I got functioning copy via
Tucows.
ii. The file overwritres your sysram.opx folder with sole older versions. This disable my most valuable piece f
shareware, EncryptIt, whic I re-enablked by simply re-installing it.

Rick,
Absolutely! I did switch from an old Yamaha 4x4x16 to a Plextor with buffer underrun and software that supports buffer underrun. And I have hardly lost any CD's since.
But if you have an old burner like my Yamaha that does not support buffer underrun and have a slow PC with very little RAM ... watch out!

Subject: More excellent service from Psion UK
Hi all,
Following my recent post praising Psion's UK repair service, I thought I'd
follow up with another confirming that it wasn't just a one-off.
A couple of weeks after getting my 5mx back from them following a repair
(non-warranty) for a broken hinge mechanism, the screen started blanking
out when I touched its left hand side, the Esc key, etc.. It seemed
reasonable to suspect that this was related to the recent repair, so I
phoned on Monday and they confirmed they'd repair it again free. Monday
lunchtime, I posted it to them by Registered Post. Tracking it on their
website, I saw they received it Tuesday lunchtime and by mid morning on
Wednesday they'd repaired it. Early afternoon on Wednesday they dispatched
it back to me and about 2pm on Thursday, UPS delivered handed it back to
me. It was only out of my hands for 72 hours altogether.
I'm still impressed.
All this has reminded me how dependent I am on my 5mx, and how unlikely it
is that anything else on the market would work for me, so I'm going to try
and get a spare 5mx, as others have done. I see they go for around £150 on
eBay. Is that the best way? Any experiences or recommendations on this?

Subject: Cisco Aironet 350 WiFi LAN Card - netBook
Hi All
I bought my Cisco Aironet 350 WiFi LAN Card from Expansys against their advice. It wont work they said. It didn't, but with Build 158 it works like a charm and chats happily to my NetGear wireless access point. It isn't a one-off either as I know that there are people on www.pdastreet.com that have them working also. PDA Street has turned out to be a very useful resource and I even have an answer on EPOCVnc which I will need to look into. Take a look if you haven't been there before.
Merry Xmas all.

Subject: GPS, German supplier, DigHandler,
Answer to : Owen
Re. GPS - My first GPS was the Palmtop one. At the time most GPS's were still quite expensive and theirs was certainly a competitive priced unit. As I used it exclusively for in the car it was an advantage you could attach it to the roof (magnetic) for better reception. However, the quality was not great, and they switched mine twice over until I had a reasonable working one. In the end I got fed up loosing the signal all the time and bought a Garmin Etrex which sits on the front of the dashboard inside the car and works very well. I never got around to using it while walking, don't have the need for that function. A special cable (website recently mentioned in the digest by someone else) powers both Garmin and 5MX from the cigarette lighter.
To All :
Re. German supplier - At Clove a spare battery for the S7/nB costs Gbp 96.-, in Germany Euro 79.- or about Gbp 50.-. Someone is making a huge profit in the UK .... (www.pulster.de, shipping costs to UK Euro 15.-).
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. DigHandler - No. what I say is that you can of course criticise a certain program, but that does not say that ALL programs from the same author are bad. My personal opinion of RepEvMail is that I have to make too many choices before I get to the answer screen, 4 or 5 clicks before I can start my answer. I told Rolf this but also that I probably will not use it anyhow so no need to make changes for me only.

Subject: Morality (for Rolf Brunstig)
Rolf,
Copyright law varies from country to country - I live in Britain so British law affects me most. In Britain breach of copyright is contrary to civil law which effectively means that only those *directly* wronged can prosecute. The Crown may decide that the case is sufficiently important to be pursued by them but it is still a civil, not criminal, matter.
Consequently in the UK any move to prevent Owen from saying that a friend might crack a registration code would be a restriction of his right to free speech (he is not inciting a criminal act nor conspiring to commit one and I'd like to know who he is swindling). This, in the UK, would also be a civil matter but the Crown would definitely look at it if Owen were to prosecute.
Free speech is important in the UK.
But this discussion is only about software where *no* copyright owner can be found by reasonable means. As I have said (and others agree, I'm sure) the expressed wishes of any copyright holder should be honoured. There is no intent to steal (or swindle). To wait until the software is out of copyright means finding the copyright holder (by definition impossible by reasonable means) and then waiting many years until the copyright lapses before the software can be used by which time it will be effectively useless.
Certainly I wasn't totally clear about finding the copyright holder: I meant that if even the appropriate heir, executor, lawyer or equivalent, cannot be found the software could be considered abandoned. If such a person can be found then they surely have charge over the copyright? In any case in that situation obligations are straightforward - such a person is the effective heir pro tem, the state maybe later.
But even if the copyright holder were available the shareware concept, despite your opinion Rolf, may not be covered by copyright law in every country. It certainly should be (and all here seem to respect that, I know I do) but the UK copyright laws were passed before electronic publishing and computer programming. I expect the same applies elsewhere.
Therefore use of such software may be legal but immoral. I think this is the logic my correspondent had in mind. It may be wrong but it does make sense.
But you seem to think that any unauthorised use of any software under any circumstances is both illegal and immoral even if the author cannot be found to give his authority! You don't consider the position that the author/owner may have effectively disappeared permanently. And you say that I am encouraging some people to be "moral cowards". What I am encouraging *all* people to do is to respect others differing points of view, be it about morality or anything else.
I resent the implication that I condone stealing but that is a minor point. I feel sorry for anyone whose view of life is so narrow and who is so certain that others are wrong. People study right and wrong for decades and cannot be that certain. Understanding of morality has changed over the centuries, beliefs have altered over millennia. In 1,000 years maybe your ideas will be the accepted norm, maybe not. But I do hope no-one will try to inflict them on others.
Let me be clear about this - my moral code may not be the same as yours, Rolf, but it is just as valid to me as your's is to you. You have said, at even greater length than anyone else here, that you disagree and you have said why. That is fair and right in my opinion. But any attempt to inflict any moral code on anyone is wrong in most peoples' opinions and mine in particular. I actually suspect it's wrong in your opinion too.
May you, your family and all here have a Happy New (Western) Year,
: • )
Phil.

No idea. But generally speaking, deleting programs on the S7 has never been a problem. As they say, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Meanwhile, I will continue to use the program.

PC-Four was a PC based productivity suite Psion launched in 1986...
It consists of:
PC-Quill (Word processor)
PC-Archive (Database)
PC-Abacus (Spreadsheet)
PC-Easel (And GEM-EASEL, a Business graphics program)
These four programs have a very similar interface, a macro language and looks like they did the job...
(PC-Archive also have a Basic like programming language and a creen designer. Somewhat like DataEase )

I know this was a reply to someone else who had written to the List but this is horribly wrong. Not only does that sound like the individual is supplying an illegal code for the dead individuals software but for any share ware. I am new to this list but I got to say I hope owen gets caught and I can say clearly I do not want any of his illegal codes. Lets all do the right thing and support those who have made some great software.
I do have a question about digihandler I was unable to get it to work and was wondering if anyone knows if there is another digest handler, possibly even a macro that I could use with magic keys.

Dear All,
Palmtop Mag ----->
I was going to go on about how rubbish (in my opinion of course :o) ) Palmtop Magazine is now for both Psion users & Palmtop users, but as its Christmas I wont bother!
(I was also going to say what good value it is though, as at its present rate of publication my 6 issue subscription should last about 15 years, but that would be cruel).
Sherlock Holmes ----->
One of my other interests a part from Psions is Sherlock Holmes (I know I'm sad as my wife tells me).
I have compiled a data base (Psion data format) of every story including;
Story Dates and Year, Publish Date, Original Art Work, Chronology Details, and Holmes & Watsons age.
If you would like a copy as it is please email me.
I'm also working on a synopsis for each story, location guide, and media guide eg. review of film in which story featured.
If there anyone who'd like to contribute towards this project please feel free to email me.
Psion Present ----->
In responce to Itamars email.
I'd love to get hold of good condition 3mx, but they're a little expensive!
Father Christmas-Proof at last ----->
Looking at the Star Chart view in David Rushall's excellent Solun software (www.freepoc.org) this morning on my netBook, I was amazed to see Father Christmas and his Reindeer flying through the night sky in the bottom right hand corner!
Merry Christmas to one and all!

I've had a Siemens Pocket Reader for about six months. Its real advantage is its portability but it does take a bit of practise to use it. You can download the Psion software from www.pocketreader.com/support/download.htm. I have a Psion lead to 9 way plug which I use with the PR lead to connect my 5MX to it.

From: Darryl Kempster
Subject: 5mx Pro / Shareware
For Trygve :
The 5mx pro runs all apps from RAM same as the netBook so in theory this should make it faster than an ordinary 5mx. Also as a fellow collector of Psions yourself I'd have expected you to have appreciated the attraction of owning one! : )
Someone else (sorry - forgot who) asked about running the MC218 ROM on a 5mx pro. Very much doubt it!
The OS for the pro comes as an OS.img file which is booted from CF by an installation utility in the ROM. So first problem is to get the ROM from an mx with all it's multitude of folders and files to imitate this single file.
Secondly the ROM on an mx is just that - ROM software which is compiled to run in ROM space. The Series 5mx Pro doesn't have a proprer ROM, the operating system is kept in a section of the RAM partitioned as your Z drive or "ROM"
Thirdly MC218 software is coded to prevent it from running on a Psion. I remember Ericsson getting very pissed off when they found out extra "free" software from their website was being downloaded by 5mx owners, so they withdrew it and coded it for MC218s only before rereleasing it.
Also the keyboard on an MC218 is different from a 5mx.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ericsson's software sulk brings me to the shareware debate. We've all been subjected to long and learned discourses on the legalities and moralities of the issue so I'll try not to bore you all with more lenghty missives on what "I" think is or isn't right. After all this is a Psion forum not a soapbox.
A lot of the debate has centred around the concept of "stealing" abandoned software. Although I don't think any actual software author has complained as such. Morality is for the individual and the law is irrelevant in that it's only relevant depending on where you happen to live and for only as long until they change it again! (Spot the cynic)
I would just like to express a plea for Software Survival. Psions are a dying platform - well those running ER3 are at least. And ER5 is being left behind as technology moves inexorably on. The 5mx dates from 1999! (a lifetime in computer terms) Less + less software is being written for our chosen platform Shareware authors are writing for other platforms or moving onto other things with the result that registration codes are no longer available for some software titles. This problem will only get worse as more authors abandon the platform, websites disappear, authors pass away etc. With machine specific reg codes there is the added problem of machines passing away. I know Itamar for one has a spare in the safe. This is a particular pet hate of mine as I have 5 useable machines so have avoided this type of shareware. My commercial software works on all my machines!
So Owen has a friend who can crack reg codes. And he's surely not the only code-cracker out there either. At the end of the day it will happen whether we like it or not. If you don't want to use cracked software that's fine - don't. But don't blame others for doing so. No-one likes a grass. For the sake of keeping alive the use of old and abandoned programs as a dedicated enthusiast I would much prefer that that option exists. Some responsible authors have made their shareware freeware before retiring from the scene. No arguments and everyone's happy. Where that isn't the case and the website is down, no reply to the registration contact details etc I don't see the problem.
If the author was that bothered about collecting the fee he would make sure he was contactable. For instance I think Steve litchfields 3lib site has the index of shareware authors on it. Simple matter for an author to update his entry there surely.
Long live the Psion!
Darryl

Subject: Multiclip, Anniversaries & Tides
Dear Psioneers
I continue to lurk on the list and read it when I have a chance. I find much of the discussion very interesting and thanks to all for keeping the list alive.
My own solution to replacing my 5mx - which is in hourly use and has just had its second screen cable replaced, but works fine otherwise - has been to buy a MC218 and put it in the cupboard for use when the 5mx breaks. ER5 together with a Ericsson T39 GPRS phone seems to meet all my requirements now and for the foreseeable future.
Re: Multiclip
I have used this program for 3 years now together with Macro5 and I find it very reliable. I can recommend it for those who need more than the normal clipboard. The only problem I have had came when it lost track of the file Multiclip.mbm which must be installed on the same drive as the macros, but in a directory below called Multiclipf. This is simply solved by creating the directory and copying the file there.
Re: Anniversaries
I use Hol5 (available on Tucows) at the beginning of every year to update my Agenda for the coming year. This program allows you to set up a range of dates, anniversaries, public holidays, moon phases, etc. for your own country in a text file which are then written to the agenda file. The text file uses a very simple program code so it can calculate when moon phases, religious holidays which are related to the moon or other dates, etc. The distribution zip includes some examples which illustrate what is possible.
I recommend it highly and if anyone wants a copy of my text file which includes South African public holidays, various religious holidays, etc please let me know.
BTW: does anybody know of a freeware program for ER5 which can calculate tides? I have one on my Windoze PC, but would like to be able to carry this information around with me.
Regards from a hot Cape Town
