I thought I'd try my hand at OPL programming, but the screen on my 5mx makes it a bit tiring after a while. Is there (still) an Epoc simulator for the PC available (preferably as a free download)?

Hold your horses there for a moment. I do NOT supply codes for all shareware. I have a friend who can and will if I ask him, but I don't ask him. I have been in very sporadic e-mail contact with this person for a couple of years discussing mostly non-EPOC related topics. I have never met him and all I know is his name (if it's his real name), e-mail address and that he lives in England, but he's never told me where. In fact, when I approached him about the MBMview code, that was the first contact for 7 or 8 months.

I have registered and paid for EPOC shareware programs AFTER I came into contact with this person knowing full well that all I had to do was send him an e-mail and receive a cracked code. All the EPOC shareware I use personally is paid for. I do not know how he creates the cracked codes, and I'm quite happy not knowing. The only "crime" I am guilty of is supplying two words (epoc user) and an eight digit number to a couple of people who had tried to register MBMview and for what are now obvious reasons couldn't.

I will NOT ask my frend to supply cracked codes for EPOC Shareware where the author is still available. If any list member contacts me and asks for a code for software that is not abandoned, I will tell him or her to go jump off a cliff. If anyone asks me for the e-mail address for the person who does the cracks, they will get the same reply.

> Lets all do the right thing and support

> those who have made some great software.

Exactly HOW do you propose that we support Lieuwe de Vries? It would be interesting to hear the opinions of the Shareware authors on the list of how they personally would like their software to be treated if they abandoned EPOC for one reason or another. Very few EPOC shareware titles would have enough market potential to be worthwhile for the author's heirs to keep marketing when the developer is gone. In many cases, the author would be the only one who knows how to make codes anyway. (Disregarding hackers.)

Have you tried e-mailing Rolf Vonau? He normally replies within a day or two and is very helpful. Rolf Brunsting says he did not get a reply from Rolf Vonau regarding REM. Knowing Rolv Vonau as I do, the only explanation I can think of is that he never received Rolf Brunsting's e-mail. It would not be the first time an e-mail went missing in cyberspace.

BTW, if any of you should stumble across any of the DOS utilities I wrote commercially when I worked in the industry in the eighties, you're more than welcome to use them and give copies to anyone you like. Most were very specific to one partiular customer's needs though, so wouldn't be much use to anyone. Please send me copies too, as I've lost them long ago, and nostalgia isn't what it once was...

I normally don't make ANY choices when running REM, except for when it encounters an e-mail it hasn't seen before and I have to tell it which language to use. When I use REM to reply to a message in the digest, I start REM and it creates the reply, saves it in the draft folder and lands me back in the digest in the same message I was reading without any further action on my part. (That's how the draft for this message was created.) When I use it to reply to a private e-mail, there is normally nothing to do until the program is finished and I can either save the message as draft to write my reply later or start typing right away.

I don't know much about Digihandler, as with the combination of REM for replying to digest (and other) messages and SaveMail for saving my e-mails, including the digests to EPOC Data files, I don't really see any need for it. As I said before, I think the main reason Digihandler has so few registered users is simply that REM does too good a job.

Anyone know where the best place is to send my MC218 to have the cracked touch sensitive layer on the screen replaced and add more RAM. I understand that POS will not repair the MC218 as it isn't a Psion.

I am Derek of Wolverhampton, England. I was introduced to this digest by Owen Morgan and I own a Revo Mb and a MC218. The first keeps switching off after a few minutes of Cascade and the second I intend to use for email and navigation when I go sailing. I have the Wiz World programme "Navigate". British port data for Pierre Pellot's programme isn't easy

to get.

Can anybody point me to the site that shows how to open a Revo, please?

I should add that I understand very little of what goes on here and very little about computers. I'm typing this on an iMac and am hoping that it is in the correct format because I don't know where to look to find

out :^( So, if it's wrong - sorry.

Believe it or not, lately the most time handling the digest is taken up by dealing with the returned messages [over 10% of the subscribers appear in our list of returned messages]. We would appreciate if you could all check and make sure your mailbox is not too full to receive the digest and if you have any problems to change your subscription to a different address. You can either send an unsubscribe and subscribe message or a message to the operator with the word ADMIN in the Subject field.  All mailboxes that return the digest 3 consequetive times will be unsubscribed for a week. If after that week it will still come back, the mailbox will be unsubscribed.

Could the user of the email addreplease disconnect the forwarding of the digest to this address ? The digest comes back from this email address for several weeks now but it is not among the list of subscribers.

Thank you and best regards,

Itamar Engelsman

I'm looking for an MP3 CD Walkman, and a friend of mine has just come across a second hand Pine D'Music SM220C Portable MP3 CD Player at £ 55.

The brand name Pine is unknown to me. (they're not on the market in Norway.) Would anyone here be able to advice (off list) what the quality is like and whether this is a good buy? The price isn't bad, but if it's going to fall apart after a few weeks or the sound is no good, I.d rather spend some more money.

Hi there,

I read in a series 5 hints and tips file that some rechargable batteries can actually recharge inside the series 5 while plugged into the mains adaptor. Is the same true for a 5mx? Saving the hassle of carrying the battery charger around with me would be great. I heard this is true for NiMh, but what about Nicd rechargeables?

Any ideas on this would be much appreciated.

Also if anyone knows of any good PSION related newsgroups that

are running, please recommend them to me, primarily regarding software, reviews, tips, series 5mx and Revo.

Thanks to all who have helped me out in the past, I enjoy your input and reading the digest has helped loads as I learn my way around my Psions.

The antenna for the WorldSpace receiver will tolerate 20 - 30 degrees either side of the correct direction and the same amount up and down. >>

When sailing do you adjust the direction of the antenna when the signal starts to degrade?  Or have a clever motor system for doing this.

<< The GPS will give you a great circle course (the shortest course on the surface of the globe), not a direct compass direction. As you say using a 'waypoint' would produce an error due to GC bearing (I'm a radio ham).  But my thoughts were to use the GPS only to provide one's position, so enabling a faster alignment of the Sat Dish on arrival at a camp site - the GPS would be in use while driving.

My program requires, as input, your Lat/Long and Magnetic Variation; plus the Longitude of Satellite.

I used an Isogonal map of Europe to input the Mag Var, but would have liked to have found a data set to incorporate in the program.  My internet searches have not found such data.  With the program handling Mag Var, folk like me (who are not yachtsmen) don't have to remember if to add or subtract it!

There will be a table of satellites in a later version selectable via <Tab> to give the Longitude of Satellites.

<<< Has anyone been able to access the GPS engine that comes with Palmtop/TomTom software? >>>

<< I would assume it simply outputs standard NMEA so any navigation software should be able to read it. Try connecting it and opening Comms at 4800 baud 81N with either no handshaking or only Xon Xoff. You should see the NMEA messages scrolling across the screen. >>

A misunderstanding Owen.  I was refering to the 'Positioning System' used by Palmtop RP & SP.  In the older versions of these apps, one had to switch off the GPS (serial port access) in one before changing to the other and then switching on the GPS, as only one app can use the 'Remote link'.

The later versions can both access the NMEA data from the GPS without the switching off and on problem.  I would expect that their GPS Engine (which uses the Psion's serial port as input) puts the NMEA data at specific memory addresses while running in the backbground.  Both apps then read the memory addresses when in the foreground.

Does anyone know what is actually happening here?

If we knew this then a 'SatFinder' app could use this as input, without having to switch off Palmtop's use of the serial port, before accessing the serial port.

<< I've never understood the idea of paying more money for a dedicated GPS when a normal handheld is cheaper, will do everthing the dedicated one does and can also be used on its own with internal batteries or external power. I'd never buy a fixed mount GPS for the boat either. If I loose all electric power at sea (which has happened to me on two occasions), my handheld Garmin 48 simply switches from external power to its internal batteries and keeps going. >>

Agreed, just like my old Garmin 75 and newer eMap.

Subject: Backups and OS.IMG

Hi All

Well it was going to happen to me sooner or later. I decided that I would give my EPOC devices a present as it was Xmas eve and back them all up. They haven't been done for some time, but to be honest, not that much changes on them these days. I had them lined up and then at the last minute I decided to carry on with a letter that I was writing to a friend on my netBook first. I added a few paragraphs and then shut the netbook down. I decided to quickly check something before I connected it up to the PC, but it wouldn't switch on! One hard reset later I was looking around for build 158 OS.IMG. It was on the E: drive of the netBook - hurray, zipped - boo! On the MC218 the zip app is on D: Life was becoming complicated. Simple solution as the PC wasn't booted: unzip using the HP Jornada back to the same CF. Fortunately there was enough room on it! Rename file from 158OS.IMG back to OS.IMG and then the netBook booted off it. Restore the C: drive from the PC.

Its up and running but my banking data was on the c: drive. RMRBank has a backup data option that I try to use regularly. I last used it 3 weeks ago! At least I backed up to e: I will have to read the help file and see if it can be automated.

Lessons learnt. Don't put off a backup, backup vital data more often, if you have a netbook put the latest OS.IMG file (correctly named) on your e: drive if you have one. At least it will always be to hand.

I am going to set up the ethernet again and guess which files I will FTP to my server more often! ;->

Yes , they HAD to know ! Going in bed with the Beast From Redmond

Hopefully this little gang from Sweden has more luck :

http://www.neonode.com

They built theirs on the basis of Talisker with their own interface on top of it

Release is set for February in the UK/Eire market and Continental Europe ( wich includes their home country , Sweden coming summer

Feature set 176 by 240 display , active-matrix full-colour ( 18-bit)DSTN , touch-screen ( ! ) 16 meg RAM , 64 meg removable Flash ( MMC Type 2 ) USB Host ( ! ) Bluetooth/802.11b via USB dongles ( ! )

Credit-card size ( but relatively fat compared to the competition )

Price is quoted at EUR 500 ( Without subscription ! )

Ericsson P800 finally on sale !

Following leads on Neonode's own site , I discovered that Ericsson is finally shipping its long-awaited P800 and two of the Neonode forum members posted their first -and very favorable- impressions with this new Communicator product from Ericsson

They lamented however the choice by Sony-Ericsson of the Memorystick Duo for expanded storage , as the format is not available through regular retail outlets outside of Japan ( Neonode uses Type 2 MMC , wich albeit a little more expensive is now very easy to get hold of as it is used in the Sandisk "Cruzer" USB flash drive as the actual storage element  )

The P800 however is more expensive than the Neonode N1

It appears that Ericsson started shipping of the P800 in fear that little upstart Neonode could eat into their market for communicators as well that the window of opportunity for this product could close

Further info about the Neonode 1 :

Neonode describes the product as an "Ungdomstelefon" i.e a handset specifically aimed at younger buyers

It offers beside the great screen  built-in MP3 , BUILD-IN handsfree( 1000 mW output to build-in speaker or stereo headphone jack ) posibility to use Walkman-style earbuds or regular headphone together with the build-in mic or the mic section of a standard handsfree

Bluetooth is through USB dongle rather than build-in the set itself The touchscreen is unusual as it is expressly designed for finger rather tan stylus operation ( can I say grease magnet ? )

The build-in camera is 640 by 480 , full-colour , but thanks to MMC Type 2 and USB host it is possible to use whatever digicam you like or already have

Each time that I synchronize my Diamond Mako with Lotus Organizer 97, it puts an Event heading with flag at the beginning of the day for each repeated entry.  By now, I'm up to four or five repetitions of each regular commission meeting or class session that occurs weekly or monthly - all at 8:00 a.m. on the day of each occurrence.  Is there some way to get this to stop happening -- and still get the timed entry from Revo to PC or v.v.?  Or should I try synchronizing with some other scheduler on my PC?  I can't tell whether this is just something that Lotus Organizer does, or whether it it built into the EPOC software.

2. Has anyone on this list suceeded in connecting a REVO to the keyboard for the Apple Newton.  I bought a keybosrd and followed the instructions that I found

I got a competent techie to sodder the connections -- but nothing happens when I try to use the Newton keyboard.  It would be SO handy if I could get it to
