Note from the operator :  Could you please not be "lazy" and delete the subject field of "Re: EPOC DIGEST V1 # 132 :" before entering your subject ? These words do not add at all to your message and give us problems with the handling of the digest. Thank you in advance  for your help in this matter.

I use the great backup program by ralph sprenger and have it set to auto-backup every day at 4am.  I forget it is even there, and am so grateful for it.  It checks the battery of my netbook first to ensure it can write to the CF then closes all the open apps, backs up (and archieves) and then reopens them.  One of several essential programs I reccomend and well worth registering.

On my Revo+ in the folder System\OPX I have the following files:-

Systinfo.opx

Sysram1.opx

Macro5.opx

Macro5.mcx

On my Revo+ in the folder System\OPL I have the following file:-

Macro.oph

Macro5 runs OK, but it has not been written for the smaller screen of the Revo, so all displays loose the right and bottom of the display.  The author's web site says (the last time I looked) that a Revo version is in hand (or words to that effect), but the date shown as last update was a long time ago.  As the author's e-mail addresses are not in use, it's possible that Pascol Nicolas has left the Psion arena.

However I find version 2.40 on my Revo+ is better than not having it.

Why your copy is not working, I've no idea other than suggesting that the folder name is not 100% correct.  I can't comment on Pocketbank, but ABP5 works very well on a Revo+, 5mx and 7.  I copy files by Ir from my 7 (master) to the Revo+ (and 5mx) to take with me everyday.  The screen sizes of all three are handled very well by ABP5 and it has only a few minor problems.  All can be worked around apart from the graph display minor problem.

Looking for a simple program that my wife could use to compare prices

on the supermarket shelf, I downloaded Convert5 on to my Revo.

The Price comparison facility in this program being ideal - except

for one serious problem, the tiny font used on the input screen makes

it extremely difficult to use in anything other than perfect lighting.

The 'shareware' trial period is now ending but before registering for

a near unuseable program, I'm wondering if anyone on the register

knows of a similar but more user-friendly price comparison  program?

I like Crypto, http://salvis.com/. It's free and it seems to work on most files. I just tried it on abp. I opened Crypto, navigated to where I have my abp file (C:\abp\Keith.abp), and followed the instructions. Now my Keith.abp file has Crypto's lock icon. The only thing I had to do was re-do my Macro5 hotkey for the program -

used the same hotkey, but without the re-do it couldn't find the file.

CodeSafe is OK, but you can create your own Data file with your own customized labels then use Crypto on it.

I'm not acquainted with the other apps you mention, so can't comment.

Hello to all.

This is my first post on the digest after being in the background for some time now.

I have recently launched version 1.0 of Virtual Keys.  It is a freeware macro which provides an on-screen keyboard for the Mako/Revo line of EPOC machines.  More information, a download and screenshots can be found on its home page:

If anyone has feedback or suggestions after trying it, please email me.

dear all,

please help.

i just bought a used imac. it's one of the old graphite g3 400dv ones running os x. i finally got tired of fickle & bloody expensive & archaic dial up speeds with my s7. so i now have these 2 boxes & no idea how to get them to talk. is it going to be possible to connect my s7 to the osx imac?? i don't want to fanny about syncing agendas & contacts & emails & backing up. no, all i really want to do is get html pages & emails onto my psion for bedtime reading & continue writing email in a cafe or on the train or anywhere else i fancy on my s7 then send via the mac. is this too much to ask for?? is it not possible to connect via the adsl of the imac?

best wishes to all,

Main problem with such apps lies in the "proprietary" limitation. You hardly can read your passwords on the emulator and not at all with any other OS.

I quickly abandoned CodeSafe for its inability to export data.

I choose Freecrypt for its speed and stability.

I like NDcode v6.3 macro from Nicolas macros page (...thanks again forever Pascal!); NDcode codes a string such as my Visacard# in this :

>>>gbqpiillgkhgkhjm¸<<<

I'ld bet nobody but me will decode it   ;-]

Re. FreeNote - Your program looks really good and can be very useful. My only problem with it is that I cannot enter enough text in each note and that I cannot enter new lines in the text.  Is it possible to allow enough text at least to fill the screen for larger notes ?    Also, a small bug on my S7, when I exit the help file the program automatically asks whether I want to exit or not.

RE. 5mx battery - Even if the 5 or the 5MX (opinions are divided in the digest) trickles, as you said one certainly cannot rely on this to recharge the batteries, and I wonder whether it is worthwhile to take that risk with the machines not being made anymore ...

Subject: dCalc financial calculator to become freeware

Thought I'd add this to the debate about what should be done with EPOC software that is no longer supported. dCalc is a great RPN (HP12c) financial/scientific calculator for EPOC, and the author, Bob Hepple, has announced that since he can no longer support the software, he is now releasing the source code to the Psion community:

From: bhepple

Subject: dCalc news

Dear Fellow Psioneers,

With all software there is a cycle of invention, research, development, support and obsolescance and it is now time to think about the latter for dCalc. With the hardware becoming hard to find and the number of registrations for dCalc stable at about 200 (and with my own Psion-5 broken!) I must draw a line and announce that I will no longer be able to develop the program.  That is the bad news, but I also have some (hopefully) good news.

To repay my debt of gratitude to all of you who have supported this project and who have provided me with encouragement, bug reports and (sometimes) admonishments, I am now releasing the source code to the community. This will achieve a couple of things, namely:

* provide you all with the ultimate customisation tool and with the    ability to support yourselves

* create an opportunity for others to build on what I have done

* keep the RPN-way alive on the Psion for as long as possible

* prevent this little piece of my life-work from dying completely, at    least for a little longer

Here's how it will work. The source code is available here. The licence I have chosen for the source code release is the GNU CopyLeft GPL which essentially allows anyone to copy and redistribute the source code itself and any modifications and binaries created from it provided the source code is made available (including any modifications) and the same licence terms are applied, ie the GPL. It's very simple in principle and the licence terms are explained in full detail in the file COPYING.

I will continue to provide the binaries for people who want to avoid the hassle of compiling it all up but I don't mind at all if someone else wants to duplicate or take over this work and provide binaries somewhere else. I simply request the courtesy of being informed. The initial binaries are the 2.02 release and they, of course, come with the nag screen for non-registrants. If and when substantial changes are made to the source I may decide to re-create binaries with or without the nag screen. Frankly, the number of new registrations has dropped to a level where there is really no point in nagging new users into registration and I will in all likelihood just post a nag-free version once I get the time.

Cheers  Bob"

In response to the dialogue begun on the Epoc Digest list in V1 #134 In # 134, Trygve Henriksen responded to my query about connecting to a REVO to a Newton keyboard.  Here are my questions and his reponses - plus my answers to his questions.  I'm still trying to figure out how to make this work.

Yes, I got the driver from microcheng's web cite -- and even went back to him

for a more recent version when I couldn't get the first to load into my Revo.

So that part is all presumably taken care of and I have a "NewtnKbd" Icon on my

Extras bar.  Nothing particular happens when I click it, but I presume it's just

supposed to enable the use of th keyboard.

>2. You know that the keyboard is OK?

>(A lot of stuff sold on eBay and other sites are sold 'as is' or with 'worked when I packed it >away yonks ago'... )

I can't be sure.  It looks pristine and I've no reason to mistrust the previous

owner's word.  The only way I not to test it would be to find someone who owns a

Newton.  Or perhaps I could find an Apple dealer who has one on hand.  I'll see

about that next week.

>To test it, try firing up Comms(Is it included on the Revo, I can't remember)

WHAT IS Comms?  And how can I tell whether it's included on the Revo?

>I assume that you didn't get it soldered directly to the cable of a spare base, but got an >9pin-to-newton-plug adater made, right?

Yes, there were instructions on how to do that on the RevoWorld site and I got

the service technician at the college where I teach to do the sodering.

>(No, cutting off the Newton plug is NOT a nice thing to do...)

>If so, it should be possible to connect it together with a null-modem to the Serial port on a >PC and use a terminal emulator program on that, too.

I'm not sure what this involves.  Another cord in place of the one that's now

designed to connect to the cord from the Revo docking station to the PC, I

suppose.  So it should replicate the Newton plug adapter at the end that

connects that to the keyboard and another end that fits the serial port where I

now plug in the docking station?  I'd be grateful for confirmation that that's

what you mean... and for advice from anyone else on the Psion Epoc Digest list.

I thought it might be a nice idea if subscribers would describe a certain program they use a lot in more detail for the other subscribers. This could enhance the way we all use our Psions. One day this week I will try to describe how I use Agenda as a business tool to follow up my contacts with my clients, much like the more spcifically written follow up programs. Looking forward to reading about your most used program.
