Yes I have one now

Could you please someone of the group help me to find applications? I know that many developers are working on it

My first impression is that is an interesting device

Mainly a pda than a phone, but with a nice camera

First of all I want to know if someone will update the sw to implement T9 text input on the phone sms apps.

Subject: Wireless networking with netBook

I'm trying to get my newly arrived second-hand netBook up and running with my established 802.11b network. The network is running in conjunction with my ADSL modem and a Netgear router and AP. I am using a netgear wifi card which is on the list of cards that are known to work with the NetBook. I have the latest OS build installed. I can successfully ping the local host using FLFING, but all attempts to acces the Internet fail either with a time-out or with a 'network problem' error message on the netBook.

I've got as far as I hav ewith the help of Ian Silverster's invaluable pages at www.silvester.org.uk. I've done everything he suggests and have the card working, so we know that this part is OK.

I've set the 'WaveLAN' option to the same name (all uppercase) as the SSID of my network.

I can't think what else I need to do to make the machine want to talk to the outside world? Is there a hidden 'gotcha!' in one of the other configuration menus? Should I turn 'cable' on or off? #

Thanks for the tips on printing hlp or data files. After I asked the Digest I wandered the Internet and found a Psion site I hadn't seen before.

http://www.ericlindsay.com/index.htm    IMHO this has some nice info on the Psion ROM applications and additional programs. It also mentioned the "More" option.

Back to working on ABP. Now if I just had some money to enter. ;-)

Subject: 5mx/5mx pro keyboard

My 5mx keyboard has always been a little balky. I think maybe the keys are not equally sprung. A lot of times I will miss a letter because of not hitting a key hard enough, and other times will get multiple letters (I have adjusted the repeat function.) Interestingly, I find it easier to type on the Revo Plus/Mako that I got for my wife!

Does anyone know if the 5mx pro has a better keyboard?

Also I heard once that there was a company that reworked 5mx keyboards to make typing more reliable. Anyone know about that?

Just got an infrared modem and it has rejuvenated by interest in exploring my Psion. I really appreciate this list.

Re. GPS - Yes, I use the eTrex regularly in my car. However, you do need a special cable for it as it needs on one side to connect with the eTrex and the other the Psion. In which country do you live ?  I have a spare cable as well as a spare Palmtop GPS, but it would be difficult to send it overseas with customs etc.

Re. Agenda use - I wrote this once before for the ups5-digest. If it is familiar to you, skip it.       I use the Agenda program quite extensively for following up commercial contacts for my business. The To-Do function in the Agenda program is quite useful for this. I work for a Company in the metal trade, and we have groups of products for which we contact different clients. For each group of products I opened a two page To-Do list (ie 2 lists). On the left is a list that will appear in the daily view of the Agenda, on the right a list which will not appear. Each entry is the name of a Company on the date I need to contact them. Attached to the entry is a WORD attachment. At the top of the file is the name of the contact person, tel. and fax number and email address, with a screen-wide line underneath it. Below the line I keep a short record of what I discussed with the client. How does this work in practice ? :

- on 10/1/03 there is an entry for a Company called "Roos". I open the attachment and check what was discussed last.

- if I have no time that day, the entry will continue to appear in the day view each "today" until I change the date

- I contact the Company and jot down in the file what was discussed. Sometimes I need to phone them again within a day or two and leave the date as is. Other times I need to phone them only on a future date and change the date to that future date, which means it will disappear from the "Today" day view until the new date.

- if a Company is not actual anymore but I still want to keep their details on record to contact them some undefined time in the future I move the Company from the left list to the right list. It will not appear in the day view anymore, but I can still get to the details in the "To-Do" view.

In order to have a clear view of the Companies to be contacted on the one hand and my normal diary on the other hand, I divided my Agenda day view in two. On the left I show until 8 am, and all the To-Do lists appear in that time slot. On the right I show from 8am until midnight with my normal diary entries, both work and private (I never understood why to separate these, I can't make dinner date in a week I am traveling ...).

I know there are several programs on the market that might do this job better and/or nicer, but I like it very much that this way it is totally integrated in my Agenda file and I don't need to check two different programs. With Crontab I bring my Agenda file to the foreground every workday at 4.00 am and move it to "Today". When I open my Psion in the office, the first thing I see is my diary for the day with all the To-Do's.

Besides this system, I also have a "To-Do" list in a jotter file with just other things to do that have nothing to do with the clients. Again with Crontab that list pops up every working day at 10.00 am and 3.00 pm.[by the way, I think January 2003 recognises workdays again in Crontab (a known bug it does not most of the time)]. Any questions welcome.

Steve,

"Perhaps you could also post again to the digest when these updates are up and running."

The updates to the database are taking place now but I should think it will be a few weeks (if not months) before the database is fully up-to-date and complete.  However, once that time comes I will indeed post a notice here.

"These days I just bookmark all my core applications and check them periodically for updates.  It would be good to have a site that will highlight any new developments ..."

One feature of Epoczone that I am trying to resurrect is Webwatch which automatically checks web pages for updates so that you have a single list to consult.

Kind regards.

Not on my 5ive or 5mx, if the letters/numbers on the sticker on the

inside of the CF flap are the serial numbers. The Unique IDs are

completely different.

If you mean that the same filenames are on different drives with different dates, then yes, probably due to installing in different places

>Does Epoc always use the latest version or does it use the

>version found on the drive to witch the app using it was

>installed?

I think it starts by looking in the Z drive (Internal ROM) then C, then D.  Although I may have that order mixed up.

>Is it safe to remove all but the latest version of for example

>sysram1.opx or estlib.dll?

I would highly recommend a free program called OPXScan. (search Google for 'psion opxscan' and you should find it)  It will find all of the OPXs on your system, and list out which programs use which ones (Down to which drive), their version #s, show you which ones are not used by any program, and allow you to delete the OPX files without having to go back to the system screen.  Very useful for sorting these things out!!

>If it's enough with one (the latest?) version of such a file,

>where's the best place to keep it, C or D?

After trying both places, I have found the D drive to be the best place to install to for several reasons

- It keeps the C drive from filling up with these files, leaving less room for running programs and slowing the system down having to read through a directory with more entries

- If you ever suffer a hard reset (like if you -cough- let your backup battery run -cough- down...(hint!)) and find your C drive wiped clean.  You will find all kinds of things no longer working that relied on system files on the C drive that are no longer there.  If you have a backup to restore to, then it is easily recovered from, but until you are able to get to that backup, you will find your machine severely crippled..

If you have most of your system files on your D drive, then everything will still be in place and it will be much easier to pick up and keep going.

- The only time this would not be the case is if you do a lot of CF card swapping, in which case you would want to keep the programs you use all of the time on the C drive so that they will be available no matter what CF card you are using.

>Does this hold for all types of system files?

The rule of thumb I would use would be if you are offered the choice of where to put the file (most installs do), pick the D drive.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Lines on the screen. :(

Hello everyone.

I've been an avid reader of the digest since i got my series 5 (first psion).

i tried a lot of other handhelds including the newton 2100 but none stood

up or even came close to the quality of the psion :D

however i've had a problem with my new psion 5mx.

One day i woke up on its alarm working perfecly.

the same day when i turned it on again i got lines on the screen :(.

can anyone help me with this?

i checked the screen cable it is working fine since the backlight is working.

(if i remember correctly the backlight is the first two leads on the

screen cable.) so it would stop working first if the screen cable is the

cause.

the sensor of the case (closed or open) was broken but i fixed it.

So if anyone can help on this matter i'd really appreciate it since i use

my psion 5mx a lot.(especially since it has a JVM :D)

Thank you.

it would be great if you could also send me an e-mail off list.

The TomTom software works with any Garmin out of the box. Just choose NMEA on eTrex. The nullmodem-cable functions, but is somehow unconfortable. You can build your own with an ePlug

http://pfranc.com/cgi-bin/pub/c_de?pid=Pplug

and a spare Psion cable or buy one from Clove (I think) or look at

http://home.wtal.de/noegs/mtg-faq.htm#top3.1

http://www.klostermaier.de/gps/index.html

From Richard Godwin from PsionPages

http://www.psionpages.com

http://www.richardgodwin.co.uk

I also got some interesting info. But this is long ago,so you'll have to look for yourself.

Other interesting software:

Garmedit

psinmea

codriver

psigar

all allow some editing of tracks on (any) Garmin, codriver translates routes to voice instructions, the others allow some more arcane operations - I have no idea about navigation etc., but there was s-o residing on a boat around here, I guess he'll also say something :-)

I find the eTrex more than sufficient. The difference in price to the eMap-series is imo not worthwhile if you rely on the Psion for the maps. It is somewhat slower than a grownup GPS vehicle-mounted computer, but more stable and who would want to buy a BMW just for the computer? ;-)

Yes, I was lucky and only lost 2 days messages, and have only 2 email accounts and 2 dialup numbers. I don't know how the 5mx stores emails and account settings so can't go through the backup looking to see if that info is stored or not.

How else to check other than resetting and restoreing - a rather drastic experiment?

Here is my response to Itamars quest. Next to Agenda (not To-do) and Email (or Calendar and Message as the apps are called on my MC218), my most used program is RMRTask from RMRSoft.

It is an extended task manager and it gives the possibility to handle a large number of different tasks with a multitude of priorities, actions and contacs / objects. IMO it has a smart and easy-to-understand user interface and I find that this sw by far supersedes the built-in Agenda To-do (which I find rudimentary and never use) and it has extensive possibilities for configuring it to suite your personal needs. You can sort and "filter" tasks in many ways and tasks can have an attached extended description (up to 1000 characters) and/or links to other Psion files and the Agenda app.

You can have task files (groups) for different aspects depending of the way you use your Psion (Job, Private, The Children, Internet etc..) and the groups are very easy to switch between and they can each be configured differently.

RMRTask handles repeated tasks and alarms can be set for tasks. I'm a power-user of it and find myself having 50 - 100 tasks in each of several task groups. Furthermore, I have developed a way to use special task groups (job, organisations, clubs etc..) for meeting notes, using the possibility for extended description. This I have found to be a very compact way to easily store and retrieve meeting information.

I must add that when there has been a need for it, the support has been swift and very helpful. The man behind it all is F A Richey who in my opinion with RMRTask has written one of the best programs for Epoc all categories.

Where did you find a 256Mb for £60? What is the currently best price for 512Mb? I'm thinking of giving my MC218 a new 512Mb card and letting the camera have the 256Mb.

We only tack when we're going to windward, and gentlemen never sail to windward... I've often left port wanting to go north, found a strong breeze on the nose and decided there are nice places to the south as well...

Subject: Orange data, S7 battery performance

Can anyone confirm whether it is or is not possible to use data on the Orange Pay As You Go service?  I ask this because I'm thinking of going back to using my tiny, Psion friendly 8210 which I replaced with my current 9210 last year on an upgrade (on Everyday 50) when the 12 month contract expires in about 4 month's time.  I'm intending to cancel the contract then and get a new PAYG SIM to pop into the old 8210 to resurrect this handset.  I still want to be able to use the 8210 with my S7 just for mobile email and texting on occasions but no longer need a contract SIM as my use of data on Orange will be much reduced so continuing with a contract won't really be cost effective any more.

In case anyone is interested I've been using the excellent ChasDis7 battery monitoring program on my S7 for over a year now and I've been keeping detailed records of its performance since then (I really must get out more!)  Interestingly there appears to be no reduction in performance over that period at all due to age (the battery is original equipment on my S7 which itself will be 3 years old in March).  Also, IBM's claim that their 1Gb Microdrive is more power efficient than their older 340Mb size (now discontinued) appears to be confirmed by my own figures.  These figures are always from fully charged to discharged state:

Average battery life Jan 2002 - Sep 2002 (with 340Mb MD) = 6.05 hours

Average battery life Sep 2002 - Dec 2002 (with 1Gb MD) = 6.40 hours

No doubt these figures would be better if one used a CF card instead (or even better, just using the C drive alone) so I'd be interested to know if anyone has accurate figures on their own usage patterns.

I beleive EPOC looks for these files first on C: then on D: and E: (if they exist) and finally on Z:. It will use whichever version it finds first. What I do is simply copy them all to D: making sure to retain the newest versions. I then regularly take a backup of the D:\System\Opx folder to a ZIP file somewhere else on the Psion so that I can quickly salvage an OPX from the backup if it is deleted by uninstalling an application that doesn't abide by the rules.

The OPX files are small enough that I find it easiest to simply keep copies of any OPX file I come across on the Psion. That way you avoid the annoyance of installing some new application and finding it doesn't work because you're missing some OPX that the author assumed you had.

> Is this because I

> sometimes install apps to C, sometimes to D?

That is probably one part of the explanation, another is that the software author is not obeying the rules.

Yes.

It doesn't seem to matter for the function of the applications, so I'd suggest keeping them on D to keep as much working memory as possible clear on C.
