Allow me recommend that you add a short (2 or 3-line) description of each application to your next announcements. It's more likely that you'll trigger people's interest that way. It also saves others a visit to your web site, only to find that (say) TaskNote isn't really what they were looking for.

Hi Kit,
if you write SendKey:("Menu,2,1") for the choice of first menu, you always will be taken to the top of first menu, independent of the cursor's starting point or the prehistory. The "2" can be, of course, an other menu number, especially if you need to jump in the second menu.

I'm no longer trawling the various web sites for new applications as my Psions have been 'application stable' for quite some time. That is, I already have the applications I really need. While what I miss can be answered by a bit of extra manual labour and/or some ad-hoc macro programming.

You've already answered your own question - Word doesn't support parallel or newspaper style columns. The only thing you can do is to create an artificial equivalent by using tabs. But that's a pig of a job.

The solution is very simple, send the menu key, then send the number 1. Try it manuall and you will se that this takes you straight to the first menu. The same goes for 2,3,4...

Hello to all and "Très Bonne Année 2003" (a Very Happy New Year), with

Answer to David Kramer (and Mark Bridge, on Nov. 14)
David, have a look at http://www.dynamism.com/zaurus/index.shtml. This
(japanese) company boasts that it can provide you with any of the very
latest PDAs (classified as "gadgets" in their repertory...) or subnotebooks
that have been recently released in Japan only, adapting the embedded
software for the "English" user. They will provide you with their own
warranty (trhough free both ways FEDEX shipping from and to the US), where
the local importer or manufacturer branch doesn't.
Mark, you will presumably find on this site the way to buy micro laptops
under Microsoft cheaper than in UK or USA.

Yes never copy system folder files from the psion to the CF, this is difficult especially if the CF is used for backup, though I have difficulties even when I avoid this folder - I have tried 6 different CF card and 2 readers and they always do weird things to the CF cards adding sometimes hundreds of files and directories with dates like 1902 or 2008, with names and characters I can not even find in my extended character set and with physically impossible file sizes like 1GB on a 48MB card and it will if I try opening one of those folders freeze up the mac and on the psion you will just get the disk corrupt message. Strangely I recently brought a 1GB microdrive - which I will have to send back as it is so slow and slows down everything to an extent to make it useless - and though it did the same straight out of the box, after I reformatted it in the psion it is the first disk I can write happily to as much as I like from the psion including the system directory from the C: with no trouble at all, not a single weird file or crash (maybe this will help unravel the mystery I have yet to hear a definitive answer for this CF behaviour in a mac, when the same reader and cards work fine in a PC). Anyhow I am Macless now so will be returning the microdrive, disappointed as I brought it to use with citymaps but it is so slow just with 200MB of files on it I dread to think how it will be with more and how unresponsive the psion would get.
I have now heard (just read Brians response below) 2 confirmed reports that "SanDisk CF cards and readers with the Mac work. I have tried a SanDisk CF but not in a Sandisk reader and had the same trouble, so unless a mac user informs you differently use only SanDisk card and reader.

Using the arrow keys only works if you start from scratch - after you have called the menu once, any further calls of the menu will start from where you left off and then move relatively from there. I realise I could add an extra line at the end of the macro to call the menu up again and simply use the cursor keys to navigate the cursor back to the first option under "File", but that's not very elegant, & slows the macro down a bit (several steps instead of one).

It's not that elegant but a Fn+left arrow (Home) followed by a Fn+up arrow (PgUp) after opening the menu should solve your problem ;-)

Subject: RMRBank / Powerbase / Start Folder
Hi All
It sounds as tough you use RMRBank in much the same way that I do. I need the fuel module as well. I think that RMRBank sometimes takes unfair criticism over its speed and size. As far as the latter is concerned I think that the SIS file is over 1mb, but look at all of the different modules that are in there. This is so much more than just a banking app. ABP looks really good, and Malcolm Bryant turns out brilliant freeware that he could have easily charged us all for as shareware, but it is looking more like it wont be able to replace the functionality of RMRBank. What I really need to know I suppose is the files that I must back up to come out of a hard reset (or) a CF failure unscathed.
For Jorge - Although I have the Powerbase tutorials printed out, it is likely that the original files I saved from Foxpops site are now long gone, but I will have a look.
This is going to seem like a really dim question from someone who has had Psions for so long, but I just want to make sure that I am not missing the obvious here. In my testing of ABP I decided that it should back itself up from C: to D: when it does its automatic backup. As I am a belt and braces man I am also using Crontab to kick of a TaBackup script that backs the original ABP file on C: to E: on a daily basis. This is all very fine and well as long as Crontab is running. In fact the same seems to be true of any of these apps that do things daily / hourly / weekly / whatever automagically. So, if they are not running, nothing happens. In 'good old windows' there is the start up folder. Any apps dropped into it start up when the PC is booted. I am correct in thinking that this is just not possible on an EPOC device aren't I?

Subject: PAYG and data
Hi all,
I would like to add some experiences on this subject with the Dutch networks.
First, I find it funny, that the English call this system "Pay-as-you-go". The Dutch word for it is "prepaid card" (NOT "vooruitbetaalde kaart" or the like) and the Dutch think it is an English term. ;-)
To my knowledge Dutchtone (=Orange) and Ben (=T Mobile) offer complete data access standard on their PAYG plans. O2 offers this also and they have distributed approximately 150 000 free PAYG phones to introduce M-banking to Postbank clients. These particular chips are different from the standard O2 chips, but both seem to have full data access.
I don't know about Vodafone. They have just taken over Vizzavi from Vivendi and that is now their own WAP/data portal. I don't know if it is open to their PAYG clients.
Now for the special: KPN Telecom has *not* activated data (not even WAP) on their PAYG chips and according to the news group nl.telecom this is purposedly done to leave some benefits to the contract owners.
So: technically it is not any problem to immediately switch on full data functionality. It is a question of marketing.
I would also like to warn English PAYG users for the special 08 internet numbers. The Dutch 06760 numbers are heavily overcharged (in contracts as well as PAYG) compared to normal phone numbers.
Could anyone give me a breakdown on the availability of data on the French PAYG chips?
BTW, I just found out that my own network (Ben) suddenly started to charge extra for my 06760-numbers without any warning. They used to come from my free minutes. I just received the bill from october! You as fellow Psionists will understand that october, november and december will be quite costly!
(No guarantees; as you see Dutch networks can change their tarifs and service without any warning!)
Yours truly,
Thomas van der Zijden

I've recently done a hard reset of my 5mx, followed by a restore to the C-drive. I also have a CF card, which wasn't involved in the restore.
Since the reset, I've been getting the message 'Not found' apearing every time I switch on. When I clear it by pressing Escape, the machine switches to the System screen.
There seem to be no ill effects other than the nuisance.

Just in case you didn't see my post in the last Digest (it was the last of four comments I made on different subjects), here it is again:-
I've just put my Orange PAYG SIM into my "Talk 60" 6210e:
It WILL do data (I've just checked my email via the Psion), and the WAP works!
I'm also thinking of cancelling my contract with Orange, so you've done me a favour by asking the question! _____________________________________________
I've since been advised that one can convert a contract 'phone to PAYG and maintain the same number - ie Orange will supply a new PAYG SIM to replace the one in the contract 'phone. Whether that new SIM card will have data enabled is possibly another matter...
It seems impossible to get any hard information out of Orange - I've spent many minutes searching their website trying to find tariff comparisons between PAYG (it was called Just Talk when I got my first 'phone) and my contract (Talk 60 - which has also been replaced by the most complex
tariff system I've ever seen). From what little I've gleaned (from the current Carphone Warehouse booklet) it would appear to be cheaper to run
an Orange mobile off-peak using PAYG rather than contract - especially if, like me, all your friends have changed to other networks!
My apologies to readers who may think the above has drifted away from the topic of Psions but I think a fair amount of people use their machines
with mobiles...

Re. travel modem problem - Before thinking about a repair, first check the cable as well. It could of course be that there is a fault with the cable. Also make sure the very obvious but sometimes overlooked point that the Psion IR modem settings still show IR connection and has not been changed to cable connection. Lastly, did you try and use it with your wife's S7 ? As to actual repair, I don't know who would repair it for you, sorry. Probably anyhow cheaper to look on eBay for a 2nd hand one.
Answer : Andy Hayes
Re. ABP Question - I seem to remember you bought a S7. ABP will show the reconciled transactions in a different colour from the not reconciled ones, making it easy to see which transactions are still outstanding and not. I indeed only copy to an archive file once a year. I still have to do 2002 and the file is 32K, so no need really to archive each month.
Answer : Kitt
Re. Macro menu question - I don't think there is the option you are looking for. However, after opening the menu a Ctrl-n-Left will bring you in one stroke to the top left of the menu from where you can start again. In Lotus 123 you can give a command "windowsoff" and "windowson" that will stop the screen updating until the end of the macro. A pitty that does not exist in MACRO5.
Re. Sheet example - Thanks, yes, I find it very interesting to read how other users use their Psion. In this case, being a Director and getting paid neither per hour nor overtime, I have no use for your sheet <BG>. But the idea is good.
Answer to: Peter
Re. netBook - My S7 was bought summer 2002 and has the same markings in the Esc and spacebar keys, so I doubt these are that new. It appears that slowly the clamshell users are pushed towards the laptop market with a simple palm for agenda and data files. Well, maybe one day in the future someone will believe there is still a market for keyboard machines.
Answer : Kevin Thorne
Re. S7 battery - And as I now have a spare battery for the S7 as well, I can safely use my modemcard even when traveling. It is indeed less to carry and it connects each and every time without failing (important from hotel rooms where each call is billed separately, not to mention mobile phones outside the UK ...). However, after 6 months I still did not get a bill for my GPRS usage in Europe. Long may it last !
Great to read about a reduced netBook ... only to hear they are already out of stock <sigh>.

I'm working on a macro and need to put around 50 string constants into an array. In Basic (in the bad old days), I would have used a "DATA" sentence to hold the data like this.
Data "Hello","this","is","the","data"
Followed by a loop with READ a$(i)
How do I do this in OPL?
(I'm quite happy to hold the data in a seperate file if it makes it any simpler and someone would like to tell me how.)
PS. I have the book Programming Psion Computers, but couldn't find anything. If it's described in the book, maybe someone could point me to the relevant page.

There's a way around this. Hitting the number key corresponding to a drop down menu will bring up that menu. So, if you hit <Menu> and then <2>, you'll get the second drop down menu. As you said, if you then select item five on that menu, the next time you hit <Menu>, you'll get the second drop down menu with the fifth item selected and if you repeat the exact same key sequence, you'll end up somewhere else.
The way around it in a macro is to send "Menu", "1", "2" and four "Down"s. Going via another drop down menu (Number one in this case) ensures that the cursor is at the top of the list when you come back to the one you wanted.
Good Luck.

Itamar,
<<To All: Where can we "simple mortals" find information on the Dana so much discussed here ?>>
I forget where I first heard about it - probably here. Palmtop Magazine ran two articles that mentioned it - a bit lacking in detail unfortunately. I got the impression from the write-up that there was no connection to a modem and no mention was made about email.
The scam is to produce a child-proof computer cheap enough to sell in large numbers to schools - one per desk in the classroom. It looks very basic, has a full sized keyboard and a screen that reminds me (in the photos) of the old Model 100 (my first computer - lovd it and used it up until I got my 3a).
The childproof part appeals (even though it looks like it was dsigned to appeal to a kid) since I've been shipping Psions back to Psion USA about once each year sine my 3a) as did the price ($400 US), but held off because of the email/modem issue.
When my 5mx broke (again) I did a Google search 9on "Palm Dana" and came up with lots of reviews and found that it will connect to a modem and that it comes with email software.
I ordered mine through Amazon dot com (I do a large amount of shopping through them) via a libary computer - $440 bundled with a modem.
I will undoubtedly get the 5mx fixed again and run both platfoms. If the Dana doesn't work for me I'm not out that much and will probably add a NetBook to the stable.
A search engine will probably get you more than you want to know as (my perecption is) the machine seems to be taking off. And I'll post me expeiences, good and bad, to the list. As I'm not a power user (Eiutan Gilboa once called me a power word processor) there's a lot of Psion capability that I'm not using anyway.

I have successfully configured my 5mx and Nokia 6510 for GPRS and can now browse the World Wide Web with ease. I found a number of useful resource that enabled me to reach this happy state. Worth of mention are the excellent Mike McConnell's site www.mikemcc.net, and www.Nokia.com that provided me with N6510_Psion_Devices.pdf for configuring Psions with the 6510, and Nokia_AThelp.pdf that helped to explain the AT commands that I was using.
My thanks to past posters to digest without whom I could not have achieved this small miracle.
Now a question or two about News Servers. I was accessing news.ukonline.co.uk by calling the UKOnline telephone number and using GSM. I am now accessing the internet through the Vodafone GPRS Access Point Name 'internet', and can no longer reach the UKOnline News Server. How do I find out what News Servers are now available to me? There is probably a range of servers that differ in news groups, cost and quality. I know that as I use RMRNews I need to find a news server that sequences the posts correctly so some experimentation will be required.

Subject: Expansys or Clove?
<Recently I decided to incur the slightly higher costs and give Clove a go and I have been delighted with them. Their customer service is excellent with emails replied to promptly and they are extremely helpful, friendly and patient if you give them a ring. I also like to think that I am supporting a company that is supporting us Psion users for as long as possible (selling POS-supplied 5mx Pros and 3cs for example) and their slightly higher costs are more manageable if I think of them in those terms. If you've never tried them I would highly recommend that you do and see what you think. Obviously the more cost conscious of you will stick with Expansys (or other lower priced suppliers) but Clove are definitely the suppliers for me.>
I can't comment personally on Expansys as I've never used them but I have used Clove now for at least six years for all my PDA needs and have found them to be excellent. Their after-sales service and speed of delivery is particularly good and I like the fact they know Psions inside out. I have no connections with them - just a satisfied customer :-)

Subject: Orange PAYG
<I've just put my Orange PAYG SIM into my contracted 6210e:
It will do data (I've just checked my email with the Psion), and the WAP works!
I'm also thinking of cancelling my contract with Orange, so you've done me a favour by asking the question!>
Thanks Andrew, that's exactly what I wanted to know - someone who has actually tried a PAYG SIM in a data-enabled handset and can actually confirm data does work. I too am now thinking of escaping my contract (when it expires in June) going over to PAYG!
