Subject: RE: SanDisk combined CF/WiFi cards

In case this has not been posted yet:  SanDisk has announced that they are selling combined 802.11b/CF memory cards.  Here is a paragraph with prices, etc.  This should be good for netBooks, no?  A URL connection follows the paragraph.

Jan in San Francisco Bay Area

"The Wi-Fi (802.11b) CF and SD Connect cards have a suggested retail price of $99.95. The dual-function CF cards with 128MB of capacity will be priced at $129.95 while the dual-function 256MB SD cards will be priced at $149.95. The CF Wi-Fi card is available now, the CF dual-function card and the SD Wi-Fi card will be available in March and the SD dual-function card is expected to ship at mid-year. The CF pricing includes a PC card adapter for notebook and laptop owners. SanDisk Connect cards will be sold in many of the 50,000 retail stores worldwide where SanDisk branded products are sold."

Subject: Sony Clie

To Rolf,

Well I am using a Sony Clie T615. It has a Hi Res 320x320 screen with 16MB Ram. I bought a refurbished unit on Ebay for about 55% of the retail price. I'd say not bad considering everything looks brand new except the sticker behind the unit with the serial no it.

Pros,

a. Excellent colour screen

b. Form factor, small and slim.

c. Can sync with Jpilot & Evolution in Linux.

d. Good games on colour screen.

e. A reasonable battery life. When outdoors you do not have to use the backlight. No effect under direct sunlight.

f. Jog Dial easy scrolling. Very handy when using Tome Raider.

Cons,

a. No built in programming language like OPL. Real bummer.

b. No built in database. Another bummer.

c. No file manager

d. No keyboard. Graffiti is not too bad in the sense it is good enough for diary entries and not practical for use with the word processor (Document to Go).

e. Most or maybe all financial apps cant even match up to ABP. (Maybe they should port it to the Palm OS)

f. Palm Hacks are not as good as Macros. I sure miss Assistant.

g. Not multitasking. Apps open and close fast when in Ram but when on MS can take upto 10 secs if the app is about 350k in size.

Psion/Symbian are loosing it. They have to find a large manufacturer who is willing to adopt EPOC. Sony's latest or rather soon to be released NX 90 has a 2 Megapixel camera built in, flash, keyboard (sort off) , 320x480 screen, MP3 player. Sharp has gone for Linux and the rest I guess Pocket PC.

Subject: Extrabars / SM Card / Empower

Hi all

Thanks for the advice on starting up applications from Power On (automagically). I delved deeper into what I had on the netBook and found that ExtraBars is supposed to be able to do this. I created an extra bar called PowerOn. This should automagically launch any apps on it when the Psion is switched on without ExtraBars running - I think. Nothing happens with Extrabars not running. Anyone else using this?

I took a picture yesterday intending to email it to a friend. I would normally take the smart media card from the camera and put it into a SM PC card adaptor and then put that in the slot of the netBook, then copy that file across to the CF for when I was ready to send it. Since installing Build 158 I have not been able to read the sm / PC card combination. I assume that this is a coincidence? Or is it time for a new sm / PC card adaptor? Anyone with a similar setup like to comment?

There has been much talk of relational databases recently. Anyone interested in relational databases for keeping track of contacts might like to take a look at a freeware app called Empower. I have just started to play with it again and it is a really nice little app. It would probably suit sales people very well. It isn't customisable at all, but that might be a plus for many people! I assume that it will be available on www.tucows.com the version that I have has been on a computer here for a long time. I am not sure if the app is still supported though, although it is very easy to work out with only a few minutes of trial and error.

Another idea is to install the missing opx separately. I keep the whole set on my 16MB original system CF at hand. They are all free so if anyone wants them I can mail them - I think - without offending anyone :-)

25 of them, ca. 1.5 MB or less if zipped.

re: Mac Format:

> Doesn't the same apply to CF cards as they use the same FAT storage format > as PCs? What you describe looks as if the Mac treats the CF card as Mac

Well, apparently not. I noticed that everything is ok as long as you don't copy system data from CF to Mac or back per Drag-and-drop.

WHAT follows is a bit L O N G.

Kindly ignore if not interested in Mac.

--------------------------------- start of descr

NB: what follows has been partly discussed here ca. 1 year ago,

no solution found. Here is a web site where the programmers

among you might find what Mac users look for for solving this.

From Eberhard Mattes: said & I do not understand 8)

"If the Mac (like Linux) overwrites the byte of zeros,

a Psion will begin to see garbage".

He gave me this adress one year ago where some

    software/explanations can be found.

> look at:

> You need emxuser.zip und fst03h.zip

and added somewhere that it's actually a matter of luck that this didn't also happen to normal data. It never did, for me, though. It always does if I copy system files or delete these invisibles.

Here follows my description of the problem

in an exchange with Mark Deppe, Itamar, Riku Hintukainen (ao?)

CF cards do become occasionally corrupt upon being switched between Mac and Psion, but afaik only if you tamper with system, folder, name data (data-admin, Finder job!)

If you copy system Data to the Mac, you sometime get a very nice animation of names that change under your eyes (curiously: on both platforms!) and everything is garbage within seconds. The same happens if you delete the invisible files the Mac writes to disk (up to OS 9.x, I don't know about OS X).

On other occasions, on copying to the Mac, the progress-bar counts zillions of files, minutes on end, then says "Not enough place... 17 GB (or sth on that order) must be deleted first", which is of course silly, as the Psion System has less than 20MB.

Both the Mac and the Psion write some invisible files. The Mac writes two folders, visible on Psion, the content visible if you make it visible under extras/settings:

TheFindByContentFolder (visible and empty; might contain Sherlock indexing data) TheVolumeSettingsFolder (visible, it contains invisible docs: Resource.frk, DesktopPrinters, Finder.dat, OpenFolderListD);

which are apparently Finder-management data

Also in the root of every folder you open  in the Mac Finder (or even if you don't??), you get these invisible docs:

DesktopDB, DesktopDF, Finder.Dat, Icon.

It seems the visibility flag for _documents_ is valid for both platforms. These are docs the Mac needs to control the status of the medium in Finder. I do not understand more.

BUT: if you delete any of these on the Psion and read the CF on the Mac, it's usually kaputt and needs reformating (this is where I have _seen_ doc names becoming garbage under my eyes, as if the Mac would just change the names on the run! spooky!)

The flag for the Psion System-folder seems to be different. The Mac sees the it even if it's been flagged invisibile on the Psion (Extras>settings>"hidden docs", resp. "show system").

In fact, this data-corruption problem almost looks to me as a copyright-protection measure Symbian has taken to prevent people from just copying system and software data around as they would with a Mac, where just, ahem, borrowing software was really easy until OS X (remember?, the Psion is just a smaller Mac with more experience and perhaps a somewhat dryer sense of humour...)

Anyone any idea how to repair/prevent this?

Or at least an explanation I can understand ? ;-)

Subject: English as she is writ

Dear Rolf

In Digest 147 you made some (self-proclaimed) pedantic comments about English and the word Organi(s)(z)er.

While rather off thread, please allow a short native response.

Firstly, a word with an initial capital letter, that is a given name, should be spelt as by the owner of the name.

Secondly, Chaucer used zeds (or zees, as my Transatlantic cousins would pronounce it) frequently.  The Pilgrim Fathers used the same letter constantly and their successors still do.  However, the living language moved on in the UK, but only to some extent.

I was taught to use the 'first' spelling listed in the Oxford English Dictionary and, lo and behold, its first spelling of the subject word is Organizer!

Kindest pedantic regards

Philip Carlisle

PS. One advantage of Outlook on a PC is its ability to spell check before sending.  That would have saved you from the embarrassment of writing Dcember rather than December!

I can confirm this. I always keep a copy of my entire C drive under D:\Backup\. That way, if I need a hard reset or the machine crashes, I'll loose very little, particularly as I always keep the files I'm working on stored on CF to leave as much working memory as possible available on C.

> << I have tried 6 different CF card and 2 readers

> I see that you refer to a Macintosh.

It's the same with WindoZe. It's a long time since I've allowed WindoZe to come anywhere near the CF card for my MC218 except via PsiWin. Copying the contents of the CF card to the PC hard-disk via the (PCMCIA) CF reader and then writing it back to the card again would totally mess up the directory structure of the card. Long file- and folder names were often truncated and particularly those that contained any of the Norwegian characters (æ,ø,å) would be FUBAR.

I also got errors on the card. There is apparently some difference in the way WindoZe and EPOC handle long filenames which is sorted by PsiWin, but not when putting the card in the PC. Even if I just insert the card and permanently delete one file (Shift+Del) or move it from CD to hard-disk, WindoZe has the bloody gall to put a TrashCan on my card! My experience is that letting WindoZe access my CF any other way than through PsiWin is a recipe for disaster.

PS. I have no problems using the CF reader or the MC218 to access the cards for my camera or for my HP200LX palmtop, but none of those cards have long filenames on them.

I don't usually agree with Arent, but selling and marketing are two very different things. Unfortunately, it seems Psion are not very good at marketing anything. If they were, we would still be able to buy new Psion palmtop computers. Judging from the number of people who are impressed when they see me writing e-mails on my Mako, there is a market out there.

The general public simply never knew these devices existed, and now they're slowly dying out. In fact, even when they were available in the stores, Psion's probably sold far more machines through the recommendation of satisfied users than through active marketing. I've ben responsible for quite a few people buying Psions myself through the years.

I don't want to offend anyone, but this is bullshit. I had been accessing the Internet via a GSM cell phone for many years when Wap was invented. First I used an Ericsson GH388 (?) with a PCMCIA modem in my Toshiba for a couple of years, then I bought a SH888 two days BEFORE it was officially released on the market and used it with my Psions until I bought the T39m last autumn.

One of the Norwegian GSM providers used to advertise mobile Internet on TV with a guy sitting in a cabin in the mountains working at his PC, not tapping on his Wap phone. (Maybe they still do, I haven't been in Norway since August.) Both the GSM providers in Norway have been providing Data access for a long time. How can the Internet access have been meant for Wap use many years before Wap was invented?

On the subject of prepaid cards, I have Internet access here in Ireland with a prepaid Irish Vodaphone card and when I was in Scotland I accessed the net with a prepaid UK Vodaphone card. If the networks stop Internet access for prepaid cards, there will be no way for travellers like me to get onto the net when abroad. (I don't intend to keep my Norwegian contract, as I won't go back to stay in Norway for at least a couple of years.)

Subject: Dana

Rolf,

<<Wouldn't it be better to buy a budget model like the Palm Zire M150 or Sony Clié PEG-SL10?>>

<<I'm also wondering why you'd like to check out PalmOS at this point.>>

The form factor of the Dana attracted me.  I carried round an RS Model 100 for a number of years and saw the Dana as not any more of a problem (actually it's lighter and ostensibly more rugged).  The full size no nonsense keyboard and large screen is attractive.

It is my belief that Psion is eventually going to leave the PDA market - no longer supporting the 5mx.  The date given seems to be December 31st,

2004.

Granted they probably will continue to support the NetBook and by extension, the 7.  This means that I will eventually have to move to a NetBook at $1300 American or change platforms.

I am not moving (yet), but I believe when I do, it makes good sense to go with a Palm device.  I was prepared to get a Jornada even though I am suspicious of the stability of the Windows, Pocket Pc, etc. OS.  The one I found through Amazon.com at a sizable discount turned out to be bogus and all indications point to HP clamshell units going away.

The Zaurus Linux unit which looked possible seems to be changing into something less desirable.

I see lots of variation in hardware using the Palm OS so I believe that when all else has disappeared, the Palm OS will still be here.

The Dana gives me a classroom to play in.  When I'm done, if I like Palm, I can expand out from the Dana.  If not, I'll continue to fight the good fight with Epoc and I've only spent $450 (w/modem) for a toy.  I believe that Epoc

is far ahead the best operating system available in PDA's.  Unfortunately Psion's hardware is less than wonderful.  Reading Trygve's comments about rebuilding connections in his NetBook gave me the shivers.  This in a $1,300 unit.

So far my experience with the Dana/Palm OS (I picked up the unit at the post office this morning) is interesting.

I love the form.  Full sized keyboard.  Very light.  Runs on built in rechargeable batteries or you can install 3 AA cells for 20 plus hours.

The screen is good and clear.  Nice backlight.

Word processor seems (early yet) very powerful.  Outputs either RTF or text files rather than Word.  Very compatible with Word.

The file management system is nonexistent.  One folder for all text files.

No data application.  No spreadsheet.  I am told that I can find shareware applications.

The address book is like the 5 mx Contacts which I use on the 5mx only for email addresses (Data for everything else).

The WP functionality is good enough that I see myself using the Dana for WP (and probably EMail) and the Epoc machines for everything else.

When my last Epoc machine has died, I will probably have found Palm shareware and work arounds for the missing functionality.  In the meantime I'll have my Dana on the work table in my studio or at home (light enough to be extremely transportable) for WP projects and carry my 5mx or Mako around for everything else.

More info as I learn some of the other applications.  EMail next.

I am hoping that someone out there has written a BASIC interpreter or compiler for Palm so I can write some of my own programs.  I miss the interpreter they had on the 100 and never have taken the time to learn OPL.

<< You're not going to spend three times as much on a job because you have to learn how to do the job once more. >>

That comes under the heading of "fun", not "work."  I enjoy playing with computers.  I carried around a Zaurus along with my 3a for over a year so I could have the good points of each - both great platforms in their areas of strength.

Has anyone had experience of printing from the 9210?  I've tried using mine to print to my Canon BJ-10e and the results remind me of the early ER5 drivers - fairly appalling!  I've had much better results using Andrew Johnson's 3rd party drivers for the Canon on my Psions but these better drivers are not available for ER6.  I've never seen any articles on printing from a 9210 and I'm wondering what printer would work best with it.

Re. Roger Muggletons "locations" - Could you explain a little more about how you use this program ? Where you get the OS grid details ?

Answer to: Woody B

RE. netBook - Should you buy one ?  I think the answer is yes if you use your S5(MX) not too much on the move and can handle the carrying around of the larger machine. The advantages have been described extensively in the digest. The netBook is still supported and will allow you to stay longer with the Psion (EPOC) platform. Yes, Clove will ship worldwide, but I cannot give you info as to importing into the USA. I suppose the adaptor from UK to USA electricity is not that expensive to buy.

Answer to: Andy Hayes

Re. Jornada - I tend to disagree with you. While I am sure the Jornada is a great machine, why should someone - still owning EPOC machines - buy yet another machine with a discontinued platform and hardware ? One might just as well buy another S5(MX), S7 or netBook and stay with EPOC. At least no investment in software and hardware will be necessary, and most of us already have the modems anyhow.

Answer to: Colin Messer

Re. GPRS - Careful, I did not write "prohibitively expensive", just that it is not as cheap an option as one thinks. Yes, I do still have the spreadsheet and will send it to you by email. The strange thing is that GPRS5 with Vodaphone is noteaper than GPRS1, as it costs 5x as much. I never understood their system of charging for GPRS without any discount for higher volume.

Subject: CF Cards

Hi folks!

Roughly two years ago, I purchased a 128 Mb CF card, which I thought would solve all my storage problems. Strictly from a storage point of view, it did, but the speed factor was a *major* drawback: for example, while most of the smaller applications worked at fairly acceptable speeds, some of the major apps., e.g. Street or Route Planner took *ages*, and I am talking here about tens of seconds for the programmes to open.  (So slow, in fact, that I began to re-use my old 48 Mb card for those apps., thus requiring a change of card every time.)

Well, this Christmas, shopping online for an MMC for an MP3 player, I came across good value for same in a site in Singapore, namely zxpro.com.  When ordering the MMC, I spotted also what were described as Hi Speed 24x CF cards and, as a 128 Mb was about 60 euro or less (40 sterling) including postage, i bought one.  It arrived in three days, and works quite as fast as the 48 Mb of old.  I now have Street, Enroute etc. all back togther on the new 128 Hi Speed card, and the apps. open in a couple of seconds, as quickly as in the 48 Mb card.  (So the old slow 128 Mb card is now to be used in a digital camera instead...)

Just thought I'd pass on this info., as I seem to recall some others complaining of speed problems in the past with regard to the larger CF cards.

Subject: Replacing a Revo

At the risk of sounding very stupid, I'd like to know what post-Psion machine I can replace my Revo with.

It is showing the first signs of the memory problem. Before it dies on me, can I transfer my software onto a Nokia phone and if so, which are the Nokia models accepting the software?

Thanks

I have a booklet "Ericsson MC218 - Software and Accessories Catalogue" [1999], which briefly describes MultiVue Business Database:

"The comprehensive relational database utility for your Ericsson MC218 in business. Choose MultiVue Standard; - takes your EPOC databases and displays the data how you want. With fully configurable screen layouts, fast record search, and fast edit facility, plus links to your Agenda.

* Multiply selection - up to three criteria at one time.

* Calculated fields - great for tax and age calculations.

I am afraid, that's about all I know about this mythical application. (Hopefully, one of Psion experts here will be able to say some more.)

Subject: USA screencable fix

For those unfamiliar with the USA fix-it outfit, it's in Kentucky, they turned my unit around real fast, so that with the shipping back and forth I think I was without my unit (series 5) maybe 10 days. I got the e-mail that they received it, and a couple days later, they e-mailed that they had fixed and shipped!  Downside, of course: $160! From what I understand, they'll fix just about whatever ails your Psion for that flat amount.

I bought my series 5 from a guy named David Etengoff of Brooklyn, I somehow think he's from the U.K. He had it loaded with a lot of software that I still don't understand. I wish some other users lived around here - (San Francisco) -

I know of Keith down there in, I guess, Sunnyvale?

So I sit here wishing I could sit down with a live tutor, I would travel anywhere in Bay Area to do so. And buy that person lunch or dinner.

Thinking wishfully, I remain,

Itamar,

I hear they are coming out with Netbook II later this year - higher quality SVGA screen, new application suite (Word, Excel, etc.), USB port, internal modem, etc.

May be worth the wait for those contemplating some other device or platform.

Subject: Macro5 procedure problem

Hi.

Please disregard my previous message on this subject. I found that the problem was a really simple one. It should be Macros$ without a colon. I.e., it's a string, not a procedure. It works fine now.

My Morse-It macro is just about ready for release. I can't find anything wrong with it, and if the Beta testers can't either, It'll be ready for the masses in a day or two.

Just to repeat what it does. Morse-It is a Morse trainer that works by morsing whatever text you have selected on screen. You can use it with Word documents, e-mails, SMS messages in PhoneMan, entries in Data or just about any other text based software you can think of. To use it, simply select some text and call the macro. If you call it without selecting anything, you'll get a configuration menu where you can set the speed and pitch etc.

Morse-It is Freeware (of course). It has been tested with Macro5 and Merlin. I have no reason to believe it will cause any problems with other macro launchers.

It is a good source for 2nd hand Psion parts and bobs. But next time I would find a somewhat more quiet holiday destination."

Thanking you too muchly for the modem info.  And who says middle age has to be spent at home when one can take a good game of solitaire anywhere <g>  Though

I must admit these guts were just a wee bit

Just comfirming the observation. Tried to find a store with the P800 on the shelf to put my hand on it and play a little. Proved impossible, very few are delivered in each shipping and they sell out immediately.

Subject: On/Off problem

Hi all!

I have always found the automatic switch-on / switch-off when opening / closing the lid of my 5mx to be a practical function. This morning when I opened up the machine, it did not behave as expected, nor did it switch off when closed. Checked the settings but they are ok.

Is this automatic switch-on / switch-of hardware-operated by a micro-switch somewhere, and if so, can my problem be easily fixed? Can malfunctioning or missing sw be part of the problem?

Cheers,

Subject: win2k, IRDA , Synchronization and other bits'n'pieces

Hello all,

I've only just started using my Revo 'in anger' and i have come across one ot two problems that i cannot find a faq on, and have one or two questions about synchronization and other stuff.

First I have a Windows 2000 Pro box in the office, and i want to be able to transfer files back and forth to/from my Revo. I have a USB IrDA converter thing, an IRXpress based dodad from maplins

http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=030115093904331&moduleno=28495&modulecode= and i have to use that as i want to keep my cradle at home.

The two devices can see one another, but they cannot seem to communicate for

file transfer, and Psiwin doesn't see the USB device at all. I have tried

using the IrCOMM2k tool (www.ircom2k.de), but that doesn't seem to help. Has

anybody been able to come up with a way of doing this?

second, can anyone recommend any other software that will synchronize with

outlook or similar?

lastly has anyone in the UK tried using their Revo/Psion with GPRS?

ta,

Tim.
