Hi Guys,

The silly season and the summer holidays are all but over down here - you can almost drive around Cape Town again... almost.

For Gary re netBook II:

Hmm, a netBook with MS Word and Excel - that sounds ominously like the WINCE version. Hope there'll be an EPOC version for us hold-outs. Netpad adverts in the US are now touting both versions.

For Buzz re an EPOC tutor in the Bay area:

Far be it from me to play EPOC matchmaker but if you look carefully at the postings you'll find a few potential tutors in the Bay area. Probably best to let one of them contact you now that they know you're in need.

For Jan G re P 800 (scarcity thereof):

Same problem down here Jan, can't be had for love nor money. I'll just sulk until I get to play with one :-<

Peter

Kevin, I think that a lot of the speed issued in RMRBank are due to it being written in OPL whereas Money is a C++ application.  I personally find RMRBank very usable on my netBook but it is a bit slow on my 5mx or Revo. However, like you said, the sheer scope of features (the home inventory module has just caused my to double the value of my contents insurance!) is second to none and it is an extremely mature product.

Kind regards.

When I synchronise my Revo with Outlook I get a message saying something in the meaning of “A programme is trying to access addresses saved in Outlook - will you allow this?” (Translated from Swedish message)

I’m running Windows 2000 Pro (SP3) and PsiWin 2.3. It has worked without messages like this before - I’ve just done a complete re-installation on my pc (silly me).

Can someone please point me in the right direction to solving this problem?

Just press "alt" and you can also copy to the desktop.

both machines, see my last post) the MAc writes to the CF (and to any media, ftm), the CF is going to have to be reformatted pretty soon.

> I imagine that if they are formatted by Mac or left in their

Yes. And I sometimes had to format w. the Mac, as the Psion told me that it cannot. I then reformatted them in the Psion.

1- Since I gave up making safety copies of system data, all my CFs are ok

2- The Finder (9.1) occasionally restarts when moving Psion data around (I keep ebooks, .sis etc. handy for transfer w. a CF reader).

I would very much like to understand what is going on in the data and folder structure that causes these and the other wondrous things (see my last

post).

Subject: Keeping Revo's going

Answer to: Anthony Napier

I think the best way for the REVO is to take out all the batteries and keep it "dry". Hever, you will need a proper back-up for this which you should ideally have on a PC which you can easily connect via the serial port. The disadvantage of the REVO is the lack of a CF slot.    As to contnueing the operating system, in order to compete a considerable investment into updating the OS would be necessary, which at the moment is not likely to come from anyone.

Thanks, most helpful.  I still manage my 5mx like a Revo and cull old files I no longer need; and that with 78MB of unsed space on my CF.

>> The strange thing is that GPRS5 with Vodaphone is

>> noteaper than GPRS1, as it costs 5x as much. I never

I looked again at Vodafone's GPRS price plans.  What I think the prices mean is:

GPRS1 GBP6.38, excess GBP4.25

- upto 1MB for 6.38 per MB, thereafter 4.25 per MB

GPRS5 GBP14.89, excess GBP2.90

- upto 5MB for 2.98 per MB, thereafter 2.90 per MB

GPRS15 GBP23.83, excess GBP1.50

- upto 15MB for 1.59 per MB, thereafter 1.50 per MB

So the per MB cost drops from 6.38 to 2.98 to 1.59.

This is the one important feature that is missing from the EPOC Data application. Please, please please can someone tell us where we can find this application. Being able to do nested searches on EPOC Data files would be so useful!

I ended up creating a datafile which works fine. (Thank's for the help Rolf Vonau!) The main reason I wanted to avoid an external file was that I now need to distribute two files for the macro rather than one.

Morse-It is in the final stages of Beta testing and I may revert to filling up the array with Code$(X)="Y" statements so there will be only one file to distribute for the final release. I have a hunch this will actually make the finished macro take less disk space than the combination of .OPO and .DAT files. I've come to the conclusion that whilst having the data in an external file makes the source code easier to read, there are no advantages to the end user.

Hi all,

Thanks much to Itamar and the others who helped with my travel modem problem. I accepted your advice and ordered a new modem from Clove Technologies, and am looking forward to emailing again with my 5mx, as I have become so used to.

By the way, I was told by the Psion dealer in Canada and by POS (London) that the modem cannot be repaired because the chip is not available to them. I think that for a company (Psion) to manufacture a product (cost me $300 Can.) and not supply parts that would enable their repair but force its users to buy a new product is very, very poor, perhaps bordering on deception!!!

Anyway, thanks again to those who helped and to the good people of the Digest.

Hi Owen,

Last year I wrote a program which creates a small floating window, on top of the current application, showing the date & time at switch on (and also checks if there are any voice notes). I wanted something which gave me the date & time very visibly but didn't get in the way - so I designed it such that it vanishes the instant you do anything - click anywhere on the screen, press any key (incl. shift, ctrl etc). As it also needs to loop to rewrite the date and recheck for voice messages, it uses GETEVENT32 to check when it goes into the background, and then to wait for a switch on event before popping up again. I can't remember exactly how GETEVENT works but may have some documentation somewhere. In the meantime, if you'd like a copy of the program to look at, let me know & I'll mail it to you.

BTW, it's freeware so it won't need hacking ;-)

Jason

Itamar,

Replying to you off-list so that I don't compromise any marketing or launch plans Psion may have.

I let this slip on our grouplist to keep those intending to shift to other platforms from doing so.

This is news I got last November at a Psion Conference here in Asia where preliminary specs were released for the NetBook II.  By the way, it will be a Windows CE machine as it appears Symbian is unable to spend time and resources anymore on EPOC because they are concentrating on the smartphones market.

Mail me off-list if you have any questions.

By the way, our company is the Psion Industrial/Teklogix distributor for the Philippines, hence my being at the conference.  Don't tell Psion about our discussion  :-)!!!

Dear Kevin,

Regarding : Exporting Agenda find list

<Snip)

What you need is a small utility that reads the Agenda file, filters the appointments (or other) you're interested in out of it, and stores them in Word or plain text format. It can be done but I don't know whether such a utility already exists. A Google web search might help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---

Indeed, the program already exists. It's freeware and called Agenda Dump with both SIBO and EPOC versions available. It can be found at any of the usual Psion software sites.

As an interesting counterpoint to the whole question about list views in the S3, one of the reasons Agenda Dump was originally developed was that the list view had too few filtering options to satisfy a lot of users. Agenda Dump was developed to allow more filtering of agenda data and then "dump" the data to a CSV file to be printed from spreadsheet, including Psion Sheet. I've used it many times to export client billing data from both SIBO and EPOC machines and it works very well.

Subject: Odd Synchronization Problem

I synch my 5mx agenda with Outlook, and my Blackberry agenda with Outlook. I recently entered an appointment for 7:30pm on June 11, 2003 on the 5mx, and when I synched with Outlook last week, I noticed today that it did not transfer to Outlook (who knows how many other appointments didn't synch, either).  I tried deleting it on the 5mx and re-inserting it, and then synching again.  This time, the synch program deleted it from the 5mx (so it wasn't anywhere).  I again entered it on the 5mx, and synched again, and it showed up in Outlook.  I tried resetting the properties of the synchronization template each time (I have it set for a 10-month future period).  Has this happened to anyone else?  Any explanation?

Susan Katz Hoffman ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------

Susan,

Yes, I have had this same problem on occasion. It normally only happens with one entry. The problem has always been on the Outlook side, as your experiment showed, since it wouldn't have been deleted from your Psion if Outlook didn't think you were deleting an existing appointment. I've never seen a satisfactory explanation for this. I do know that running Windows XP and Outlook 2002 has eliminated the problem. Outlook 97 and 98 were particularly prone to this problem, and running either under Win2K seemed to exacerbate the problem.

Subject: RE: lost 5mxPro os files

Hi All,

To begin, German friend of mine bought herself a 5mx pro from ebay about a year ago. initially she had difficulties reading her OS flash card and sent it away to the German psion repair centre. They return it allegedly repaired?

Soldered the flash card micro switch! However after a few weeks of no use, she discovered when she switched on her psion that it was refusing to read her flash card.

She and her psion are now in the uk and I have just re repaired her dry soldered psion however, discovered that the flash card she is using does not contain any os system files? (as i am able to read this with my uk 5mx)

I have tried enabling hidden files and system folders but still with no success. Further she has not made a back up of these files anywhere.

Firstly, what OS files are we probably missing?, how big are these? and how do we go about getting them. As it is a German version pro, presumably the files would be German OS?

I have tried many searches with google etc, and perused the German psion site with no success of finding info about these files.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi.

My Morse-It macro is almost ready for final release. It has been tested on the MC218, Series 5mx, Revo Plus (Diamond Mako) and NetBook. I assume what works with the NetBook also works on the Series 7, but I would like to have it tested on the Osaris and S5 Classic, and  why not the GeoFox One. The Beta testers should preferably be familiar with Macro5 or one of the other macro launchers.

Morse-It works under Macro5, Merlin and Assistant. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work with all macro launchers that support the Macro5 language, but if anyone is using a different one from those listed above, I would be grateful if you could test the macro with it. It doesn't matter which type of EPOC device you use.

As Morse-It is Freeware, the only thing you gain from helping me Beta test it is eternal good Karma and a pint of Guinness if we ever meet... :o)

Regarding Kevin Thorne's complaint about slow RMR  Bank (I think thats what its called).

I was reading an old copy of Palmtop in the pub last night and it said that RMR Bank is completely written in OPL (Psion BASIC like language), where as TomTom Money is written in C++ (Machine code style).

---------------------- Sharp, to the bottom of the glass.

I was also interested to read the Sharp Zharous (I'm sure thats not what its called but there definately a few Z's going on) should have been released with EPOC 5 but they must have changed to Linux at a later stage.

---------------------- Where in the world?

I thought it would an interesting excercise to find out from which countries in the world our digest family is made up of.

If you emwith your country I'll put together a a little percentage user location chart that I'll post back on the digest.

----------------------- Sherlock delay.

Sorry for the delay in sending out my Data format Sherlock database to those who requested it, Christmas got in the way!

I'm making a few final touches and will be emailing it this weekend to those who requested (I've kept your email addresses safe).

If there are any additional digestives who like a copy at the same time let me know.

PS I will be forwarding a copy to 3-lib to see if I can get it included on Steve's Pocket Info.

The 'official' way of doing it is with a resource file.  The 'System.OXH' file has the following procedures for handling resouce files:

LoadRsc&:(file$) Loads the resource file file$ and returns a handle for it.

UnLoadRsc:(id&) Unloads the resource file whose handle is id&.

ReadRsc$:(id&) Reads the resource in a resource file specified by id& which must already be loaded.

ReadRscLong&:(id&) Reads a 32-bit value from a resource file specified by the id& which must already be loaded.

As for how you create the resource file in the first place, I'm not sure, but it's probably all documented somewhere in the OPL Development Kit.
