<Hmm, a netBook with MS Word and Excel - that sounds ominously like the WINCE version. Hope there'll be an EPOC version for us hold-outs. Netpad adverts in the US are now touting both versions.>
I suspect it will be possible to keep using your own O/S on the new machine as presumably it will still load your current EPOC ER5 O/S from your boot-up CF, or indeed any O/S you want that's small enough to fit? I don't really need its ability to use MS Word and Excel as nConvert can handle the conversions for me. Let's hope we see it soon :-)

Subject: No PC for me
I use my S7 for everything (OK, maybe not for making the tea!) and I feel no need to go near a desktop or notebook. It's my "desktop replacement" though I have never actually had a desktop to replace in the first place! I'm curious to hear how other Psioneers without access to a PC use their Psions, either just for a simple diary and phone number book to running a full blown business from it. What does it excel at and where does it fall down on functionality? Are you thinking of replacing your notebook with a S7 or netBook or maybe even a 5mx? What about ditching the notebook and phone for even more extreme portability in the form of a 9210? Let's also hear from some 9210 owners who have done just that!

Subject: RMRBank versus Money
<Kevin, I think that a lot of the speed issued in RMRBank are due to it being written in OPL whereas Money is a C++ application. I personally find RMRBank very usable on my netBook but it is a bit slow on my 5mx or Revo. However, like you said, the sheer scope of features (the home inventory module has just caused my to double the value of my contents insurance!) is second to none and it is an extremely mature product.>
I've found it just a tad faster on my S7 (but still rather slow) compared to when I used it on my 5mx or Nokia 9210 but I'd guess your netBook's 50% faster processor (190Mhz verses my S7's 133Mhz) makes all the the difference here ;-)

Regarding : Exporting Agenda find list
<Indeed, the program already exists. It's freeware and called Agenda Dump with both SIBO and EPOC versions available. It can be found at any of the usual Psion software sites.>
Ah, this sounds just what I need. I haven't found it yet (I believe it's quite an old application) but I'll do a more comprehensive search later (anyone know the location?)
<As an interesting counterpoint to the whole question about list views in the S3, one of the reasons Agenda Dump was originally developed was that the list view had too few filtering options to satisfy a lot of users.>
Actually, I thought I'd read somewhere that one of the reasons ER5 was slightly "dumbed down" from SIBO in some areas was because Psion thought their customers didn't want that level of sophistication. They obviously don't know about us digestees!

Subject: pdf printer available
<In response to whether a public release of PDF Printer is available, the answer is YES! You can find more about it at www.mbrainsoftware.com .
It can also be purchased from Handango. It is a great piece of software as, for me, it really extends the functionality of EPOC.>
Yes, I remember downloading the trial version and being most impressed with it - at last a way to print out files that any platform can read with a PDF reader. One question to everyone - can Opera allow me to perform on-line transactions with Handango and mBrain Software? I ask this because I've heard it has had problems with some secure sites in the past. I still have the V5.14 SIS install file on my S7 but I uninstalled the Opera browser itself as I didn't like the user interface or the way it completely took over my nice green Web icons and replaced them with blooming great red O's!

Subject: Exporting Agenda
I could suggest this workaround :
"More/Tidy.../copied..." as needed
then printsetup to General via File...
I thought of this but it won't work. You cannot specify which entries you want to export except crossed out, all except crossed out or all. I want to be able to specify particular items on a search and then print out or export the results. Hopefully Agenda Dump (see above) will do what I require. Thanks for the suggestion though :-)

For those travelling to the USA, don't forget that different carriers use different systems - some are GSM, some are CDMA. When you change carrier, you have to change phone too. And many are still analogue and digital because there are many places with only weak digital reception.
I use a tri-band (elderly but small Ericcson T28W) because it works all over the USA and in every European country I've visited.

Hi Robert,
The German OS images for Psion 5mx Pro are supposedly kept at the anonymous ftp server
ftp://ftp.psion.de/serie5mxpro/rom
There should be a few OS versions there, kept in separate sub-directories (you can download the latest version or try them in turn).
I hope, your memory card is OK. If in any doubt, it might be also worth while to try booting the device from another CF. (Not quite sure if it's possible to boot 5mx Pro via serial Y-modem upload -- as it can be done with netBooks.)

Couldn't agree more. If the next netBook has no EPOC option, I'll run mine until it dies and then buy an iBook.
However, if the os will be loaded into RAM, as it is now, then maybe it will still be possible to load ER5 into the netBook II.

Thanks James and Trygve. I found an article on MS:
Accessing Address Books and Recipients
If a program tries to reference any type of recipient information by using the Outlook object model, a dialog box is displayed that asks you to confirm access to this information. You can allow access to the address book or recipient information for up to ten minutes after you receive the dialog box. This allows features, such as mobile device synchronization, to be completed.

Subject: Note taking solutions?
I am looking for advice / experiences from those that use their epoc devices to take and use notes & quotes. I am starting some part time study and want to use my S7 as the main tool for taking notes, copying quotes, and generating assignments/reports (at least draft versions). Hence I would like to be able categorise the entries somewhat to allow for some smart searching. Also the ability to link or embed files and to allow rich text notes will be an advantage.
Currently for work stuff I use a formatted Data file with a 'keyword' text field that helps with some structured searching.
Considering NotePad, RMRNotes or maybe building a PsiDat database (although interface for data entry seems a bit limited)???
Being such an ingenious group, I expect someone will have a solution or use an application that works well for them, and would like to share the knowledge.

You may use Neuon's nConvert (www.neuon.com) to export EPOC Word files into .html/.rtf/.txt files that can then be opened in any number of Mac programs.
To get unformatted text, you can simply export the file as a .txt file or use the Print To File option to create a generic .txt file.
I personally use nConvert in conjunction with OS X and believe that it works wonderfully.
Hope this helps,

Arent,
I believe the NetPad will also undergo an overhaul. There will be a slot for memory expansion, very good wireless communication that will allow field personnel to contact anywhere in the world for data exchange. There will also be multi-lingual language support via third party. This is a very nice machine.

A very simple solution - just say yes ;-)
I think when reinstalling your computer, you installed a service pack you hadn't
installed before, and this makes outlook ask you before it allows another program to
read its adresses or to send lots of emails. Just to make the life a bit harder for
worms and viri which quite often spread themselves on Windows computers by

Thus a pro which has been unusable for nearly 6 months is back on the road again.
One question which concerns me though is, after the os file loaded it seems to have disappeared from the flash card, is this normal? just like a sis file. Or have we managed to delete it some how? or a more serious problem with the card?
Any help appreciated

Subject: Literal memory loss
Happy New year to all,
My new year was greeted by a failing screen cable on my 5mx, hurrah!
Once failed I popped down the road to POS Ltd to ask them to effect a repair. I then popped back again today to receive the machine with satisfactory glee.
Now, this is where I need some reassurance that it is they, not I, who are wrong.
I restored most of my apps and data from the 128Mb CF card, but kept finding that apps were quitting or not functioning properly due to insufficient memory. I then spent some time removing unwanted apps etc, but there were still run errors. 'Silly me' I thought, it must be me duplicating system files and so on onto the C drive. So I set about deleting anything that looked too bulky.
This having been done, still left the machine desperately short of memory. I paused, I swore at my own ineptitude, I paused again, and thought very hard about why my machine which would run happily before with me 'NSwitching' between 10, 11, 12 ... nay more applications; now stuttered to a painful halt every time I tried to run or data input to an app; and the toolbar memory counter on screen informed me that I had single figure kilobytes available, not the 2-3 meg I was used to.
So, in a flash of inspiration I checked the machine's system information settings. I am informed by my previously butch 5mx that it has been demasculated. It only has 8Mb of RAM on board. (I assume 2Mb for the OS, and 6Mb for free use), whereas before it was a punchy 16Mb machine.
I am right in assuming that POS have erred here and have replaced the wrong chipset/motherboard/machine? If so, how so? Or simply have I fallen over and bumped my head and have woken up in a half-powered parallel universe?
I await your learned comments, thank you.
Peter

Subject: Re: GPRS 6510
Dear Colin,
<< Correct me if my memory is faulty but I remember GSM being cheaper for email due the hand-shaking required >>
What's meant by 'handshaking' are the signals used by devices to indicate whether they're ready to receive and/or transmit data. The infrared communication between Psion and Nokia 6510 includes such handshake signals, irrespective of using GSM or GPRS for the data link.
The main differences between GSM and GPRS are:
- GSM gives you a fixed data bandwidth for the duration of the call that's only influenced by radio transmission quality,
- GPRS' bandwidth is variable, also during the call, but has a maximum bandwidth higher than GSM,
- With GSM you connect to the Internet for each call,
- GPRS has an always-on Internet connection,
- GSM is billed per time unit (seconds),
- GPRS is billed per data volume (kByte).
It's GPRS' variable bandwidth that makes it difficult to compare the two as you can't calculate at which point GPRS starts to work out cheaper than GSM. Still, everything that's either time consuming or involves large data volumes is better performed using GPRS. Web browsing is one of the examples as you're likely to spend more time viewing and reading the pages than retrieving them. The situation isn't clear cut for e-mail exchange as e-mail messages tend to be a few kByte only. Such factors as how frequently you check your mailbox, the number of messages you exchange and whether you regularly get (large) attachments will determine whether GSM or GPRS is the better choice.

Dear James,
<< Psion/Symbian are loosing it. They have to find a large manufacturer who is willing to adopt EPOC >>
I don't think they are. Psion has been a PDA pioneer but decided to move out of the market when it became mainstream and every Tom, Dick and Harriet started to join in. It's simply not the type of company that likes to operate in a predatory dog-eat-dog market. Psion foresaw this development and had already moved towards the next generation of mobile devices - the ones that merge PDA functionality with mobile telephony. One of the companies it succeeded to get or board is a pioneer in this field - Nokia.
Current situation is that Symbian can count Nokia, SonyEricsson, Motorola, Matsushita, Siemens, Samsung, Fujitsu and Sendo amongst its partners and licensees. Sendo may be small manufacturer but the others certainly aren't. Nokia alone produces in a week what the most successful PDA manufacturer, Palm, has produced in its lifetime. Both Palm and Microsoft haven't been so successful. Palm has only got Handspring, Kyocera and (let's hedge our bets) Samsung as licensees in this new field. While Microsoft has struggled to get its (Smart)phone editions of Pocket PC off the grounds and has to rely on what a no-name Taiwanese OEM manufacturer like HTC can do for it. May that (I'm here too) Samsung can change this situation.
It's a pity that there's no Psion device on the shop shelves, next to the Nokia 9210i and 7650 and the SonyEricsson P800. Psion had a joint-development with Motorola but the project needed to be cancelled because Motorola withdrew quite suddenly. Still, Psion lives on even though it's in background.
<< Sony's latest or rather soon to be released NX 90 has a 2 Megapixel camera built in, flash, keyboard (sort off) , 320x480 screen, MP3 player >>
Sorry, but I'm not impressed because Sony concentrates on functionality I'm absolutely not interested in.

Trouble is that you'll have to keep track of which OPX (version) is used by which application. Something you don't have to do when you keep backup copies of the .SIS install files.
<< I noticed that everything is ok as long as you don't copy system data from CF to Mac or back per Drag-and-drop >>
It's quite some time since I used Macs myself - hence the comment about mounting diskettes rather than CF cards.
Still, I don't think that the problem has something to do with EPOC software copy protection as mentioned in the message you've attached to yours. There's no logic in coming up with a protection scheme that works for Macs (by trashing the CF card) but not for Windows based PCs or UNIX machines. It's more likely that hidden data Macs write to disk (the resource fork and data fork) create an incompatibility with the way EPOC organises files and directories.

They're two sides of the same coin - the one doesn't work without the other.
<< Unfortunately, it seems Psion are not very good at marketing anything. If they were, we would still be able to buy new Psion palmtop computers >>
Hewlett-Packard, Casio, Compaq, LG, etc. aren't good marketeers either, then. The miniature laptop type of PDA has all but disappeared, including the Casios, LGs and what have you. The last companies to withdraw from this section of the market were the ones that were longest active in it - Psion, Sharp and Hewlett-Packard. Indicating that there's (much) more to it than marketing.
<< Judging from the number of people who are impressed when they see me writing e-mails on my Mako, there is a market out there >>
The people who see me working with my Psion tend to be impressed by the technology - that you can pack a lot of what their home PC can do, from word processing to web browsing, into such a small form factor. It's a pity that the interest rarely results in these people buying a Psion or other PDA. They get to know what a Psion is capable of, but this doesn't always supply them with (a) compelling reason(s) to buy one.
<< The general public simply never knew these devices existed... >>
I think you should give the general consumer more credit than that as many of them see a wide range of electronic goods, including handheld computers, in the shops. Thing is, that the individual consumer doesn't have a real need for many of the products on display. A foodprocessor is of no use to somebody who can't cook. Those who rarely watch TV aren't likely to pay a few thousand pounds for a large flat panel TV. The same applies to handheld computers, including Psions. Recommendations only work when the interest in buying the device in question is already there.

<< Granted they probably will continue to support the NetBook and by extension, the 7 >>
The netBook, yes. That's a Psion-Teklogix product and Psion-Teklogix is still trading. Not the Series 7, though, as that was a Psion Computers Plc product.
<< This means that I will eventually have to move to a NetBook at $1300 American or change platforms >>
You can also continue to use EPOC in its (renamed) Symbian OS form by buying a Nokia 9290 or SonyEricsson P800. You don't necessarily have to make a complete break and go for PalmOS.

Why do it now, by spending time and money on Dana, when you're not going to make the move yet? I'd be inclined to set the money aside for when the time comes, and a move has to be made.

PsiWin wasn't developed with IrDA or USB in mind. It's therefore not strange that it doesn't work. Specially when Microsoft withdrew the support of virtual serial COM ports from Windows 2000 onwards. PsiWin via IrDA or via USB is therefore either a hit or a miss.
<< I have tried using the IrCOMM2k tool (www.ircom2k.de), but that doesn't seem to help >>
That's certainly not going to work as this driver is for built-in infrared ports, not for the USB to IrDA dongle you're using. When the manufacturer of the dongle doesn't supply a native Windows 2000 serial driver for it, I'm afraid you have to call it quits.
<< lastly has anyone in the UK tried using their Revo/Psion with GPRS? >>
The answer is : Yes. Now, what is it that you wanted to know?

Re. NETBOOK II - What is the use of a netBook without EPOC ? The superiority of the machine lies in the software. Without the Agenda, database, Macro5, Assistant and all the other great programs we use, I can buy another machine just as well. But I would have to invest heavily in all the software again. Thank you but no thank you <G>.>
My thoughts too. It's the very efficient O/S and software that are so good, not so much the the hardware. I'm all for improving the hardware (especially the screen for my digital pics) but I'm certainly not intending to run a different O/S on it should I ever upgrade to one. Certainly, I've spoken to a lot of people who have invested quite a bundle in software for EPOC over a long period and won't want to re-invest heavily in IMHO a new inferior O/S. I had enough trouble migrating from SIBO to EPOC 5 years ago but that was worth it - but in my book, EPOC to Pocket PC/Palm/Windows CE or whatever, is most certainly not!

Subject: Psion collectables
Greetings from a Lurker down under...
In order to stop my study taking on the appearance of a "garage sale" I 've decided to
give away a stack of previously considered "treasures" from which I thought I could not be parted.
Amongst all these "collectables" is my old Psion 3 (not working ) plus books and Aussie Psion 3 Users group Newsletters I feel some one on this list might just appreciate this bundle more so than the local St Vinnies.
Any takers? being in a mail order business I can "throw in" postage FOC in Aus or surface mail if OS.
