Answer to Keith Giles - Subject: No PC for me

> You didn't ask for it, but here it is anyway. As the editor of one monthly bulletin (a Retired Officer's Club) and photo layout editor of another (bike club), I don't see how I could operate with only a Psion. Yes, I could put out a simple text bulletin, but is there an Epoc equivalent to PageMaker, a sophisticated publishing program? Do commercial printing companies accept it? Is there an Epoc equivalent to PhotoShop? I don't know. <

Hi Keith,

First of all there's no shame in admitting that one uses a PC or Mac to do some specialized work. After all the Psion machines were never built to do that kind of work and we have to realize what they can do and what they can't do.

Answer to Peter Keene - Subject: NO PC FOR ME EITHER

> Contrary to conventional wisdom, I install all of my applications on the C drive. <

Hi Peter,

I wouldn't call it wisdom. The reason why most of us install apps on the D drive is simply because we're forced to it due to limited RAM space on the C drive. On a netBook with an additional 32MB DIMM module there's plenty of room to store apps as well as data on the C drive. I guess most people would do the same as you.

> Anyone using a Psion / Nokia 9210 combo? How easy is it to swap info without a PC? <

Hi Darryl,

I had the opportunity to play with a Nokia 9210 for a couple of months. For me it could never replace my 5mx, nor my S7. However I loved the crispy colour screen.

One of the things I found wonderful was the ability to swap info/files between Psion and 9210. Once I installed plBeam on both my Psions there were no longer any limitations (other than available space) to what could be transferred.

As there's no database on the Nokia 9210 I installed SmallBase (which I also use on my Psions) and by exporting new entries from my Psion I could easily import that on the Nokia 9210 to get it synchronized.

Only trouble is that Word and Sheet uses different formats so they're not interchangeable as native documents.

Is there a way to avoid it?

I have some collection of software on CompactFlash, and I do not want the *.sis files to be deleted. <

Hi Alexei,

Sure there's a way to avoid it. Open the Control panel and select Add/remove. Then select Prefs <Ctrl+P>. Now untick "Delete .SIS installation file?" and the files will not be deleted anymore.

You should go to a NetBook if ruggedness is a concern.  I know of companies that issued laptops to their field sales people.  They ended up spending tons of money on maintenance - hinges failing, screen cracking, etc.  But I do not think you will run into the same issues with the NetBook.  When you handle a NetBook, open it and use it, you can feel it is a lot more rugged than the laptops/notebooks.

Alexei,

The way I achieve this is to make a copy of the *.sis file before installing. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V adds a *(1).sis file. Then open this new file.

Hi All,

thanks for your explanations as to my faulty micro switch. I have a fairly steady hand but opening my MC218 and soldering seems a too risky business to me! It looks like I have to use the on/off buttons until the screen cable death forces me to switch to my spare MC218.

Another thing has popped up: is there a general recommendation how to proceed if you have purchased a new CF to use with your Psion, when it comes to formatting the card? Is the best choice to let the Psion format the CF card or to use the card pre-formatted out of the box?

Cheers,

Subject: Using Palm as bridge between Mac and Psion

It is possible to communicate via infrared between a Palm and a Psion. I find this a useful way of sending stuff from the Psion to my Mac.

Unfortunately, the Palm Pilot only recognises its own file types. Consequently, a file successfully  beamed from the Psion to the Palm is automatically deleted.

Can somebody tell me how I can send files to the Palm without the Palm destroying them?

Many thanks.

May I highly recommend this to all Psion users...

A suggestion: with minor soft- and hardware changes this could also be used for making tea (diameter would have to be rethought for the base of a teacup), thus also targeting the British market. :-)

Yes and no. It's just that

If u 1 2 keep them on CF, then can save memory by zipping them. When you perform installation from within a zip file (e.g. Launch in RMRZip), at the end of installation the launcher program will always ask you ~"Do you want to change archive with an updated file?" (i.e. overwrite the sis file with the empty one). Answer "No" and you've saved the original version.

Re. Argos power adaptor - I used for years 2 third party adaptors at home and at work without any problems. However, of course cannot guarantee you that nothing will happen. It should be ok.

Answer to: Tim O'Callaghan

Re. GPRS - As recently discussed between Rolf and me, for people surfing the net a lot it will definitely be cheaper. For people like me using mainly email it will probably not be that much cheaper, but a lot faster to use. But than again, if you receive a lot of emails with large attachments, GPRS will be cheaper again and really a lot faster.

Answer to: Kate Head

Re. Note taking - You just gave me an idea. We have each year an exhibition in Cologne in March where I need to make notes about each visit of (potential) clients. Instead of just in WORD I could do it in a jotter file with an entry for each client. Is there a maximum no. of letters per entry in jotter ? If so, I can put the discussions in an attached word file.

Answer to: Tim Williams

Re. Replacing a Revo - If you don't need the portabillity out of the house don't exclude the S7/netBook. The size is better for typing and the colour screen an added advantage to the eyes (+ all the other described advantages).

RE. PC's - I think you hit the nail on the heas with your remark that "The 2 systems occupy 2 different niches in my life". For some things a PC is the machine, for others the palmtops are better. In my life they also happily live together (with the PC holding the back-up of my Psion).

Dear All,

AUTOMATED BACKUP

I am trying to automate my backing up in a way that the pc will turn itself and the psion 7 on automatically at a designated time and perform a backup. So far I have managed to use scheduled tasks to run Backup Psion prog. Under power management I can select 'wake the computer to run this task' though there is no option to actually get the PC to turn itself on. Is thi possible? Has anyone else tried it? Will the PC wake the Psion (7) if it is on the docking station with the link active but switched off?

PSION REPAIR

I know this comes up often... where is the best place to get a p5 fixed? Power problem. Preferably in the UK.

ENROUTE P5 to P7

I own enroute for the psion 5 but do not seem to be able to get this to work on the 7. Is this a known problem? The link between the psion and PC freezes at the point where it checks for available memory space on the psion.

MSWORD on P7

Is it possible to read an MS word file directly on the psion7? Is this a prog. or just a file i need?

REVO WANTED and Ir

Looking to buy a Revo if anyone has a second hand one going cheap. Is there software available to synch agenda and contacts on the revo and psion 7 via Ir?

FOR SALE

Have for sale a Psion 5 PCMCIA card reader, Siena SSD drive, Loads of SSDs - software, not blank, Org II 32k Datapaks, Series 3 Parallel link and a load of cases and manuals.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Subject: CF Cards / Contacts Query

Hi,

I read someone's comments last week (thanks!) about Hi-Speed CF Cards from a Hong Kong website.  I'm always eager to waste my money on computer kit, and my 5mx has been horribly slow recently on the CF since its last repair (I even moved some maps to C).  So I looked at the site and paid $42 for a new CF.

The difference is astounding.  Maps open up very quickly, quicker than they ever did, and my large Tomeraider files access without problems.  My interest was piqued, so I backed up the whole of C to D, uncompressed, leaving about 20MB spare on the Flash.

Timed Scandisk on the C Drive (5MB): 1:40

Timed Scandisk on the D Drive (105MB): 1:32

I'm stunned.  The card is a PQI, marked Hi-Speed.  http://www.zxpro.com/, the 256MB is $83.

On another point, I have a Contacts directory in D:\System\Apps, containing contacts.app .aif .rsc etc.  Anyone got any idea why it's there?  I may well have installed it and forgotten...has an update to Contacts been released?

Bye,

Rick   http://www.gillyon.com/

Subject: Buying a refurbished 5mx (Pro?)

Hi.

The touch sensitive layer of the screen on my MC218 is cracked. With the price of remanufactured 5mx machines as low as £117 from Morgan Computers, there doesn't seem to be much point in having it repaired, but before I decide what to do I'd like some input on the alternatives.

I understand it is now possible to buy the 5mx Pro with an English language OS, but can't remember where it was available from, and whether these were remanufactured or new units or where they were available from. Also, since the screen cable is the weak point of the S5 design, I would like to know whether these units have new screen cable installed as a matter of course as they should.

I would also consider getting a S7 if anyone has a second hand one or knows where I can find one at a reasonable price.

Could someone please provide e-mail addresses for Morgan Computers and whoever is selling the English language Pro? (I don't have access to the www.)

Subject: Possible Psion 5mx replacement: the YOPY

I've been away from the digest for over a month as I struggled to get my main computer to send mail.  Not Libranet's fault.  An incorrect option enabled by me.

I've had my 4th Psion 1 1/2 years now & I dread the screen cable error. I too use it for finances (ABP), my main addresses and my appointment calendar.  As well as tracking my elderly parents' medicines.  Kate's jotter idea seems better that my long word file for notes on the family court cases I track at work.

For Tim Williams:

Ever since the review in FoxPop I've been keeping an eye on the YOPY: http://www.yopy.com/

It has a keyboard, it's in color, small, and only $399 US.  They will ship anywhere.  It is also Linux based.  With a potential for many programs.

I'd be interested in others' opinions.  If this has been commented on in digests I missed... though I did come up negative in a digest search, my apologies.
