Dear all -

I  use a wonderful program called CardScan on my desktop which scans and OCRs business cards and lets you have them both locally and WWW based.  The program has synching capability with our beloved EPOC device but the synch is not smoooth; it takes forever, puts data in the wrong fields both ways and seems to be looking for a data as opposed to  a contacts file.  Their taqs and tech support are aimed at helping the common palm user as opposed to the EPOC user.  Has anybody solved this and are you willing to share your secret?

Thanks.

In the last Digest I whinged that I couldn't get my Pocket Reader and my 5mx to communicate. But the link worked fine after I'd put fresh batteries into the Psion (I can't use mains power - the input socket broke when I dropped the machine some time ago). So I can recommend serialleads.co.uk

Like Darryl, I needed to have an additional P-to-Psion lead made up (by serialleads.co.uk).   To use Siemens' supplied PR-to-PC lead, I would have to keep crawling under my desk to get to the serial port on the back of my PC tower, to switch it with the Psion/PC link. With the new lead, I make the switch at the Psion end.  Much more practical.

Or it would be if the f***er worked. It came this morning, and it hasn't succeeded in making the connection yet. I'm negotiating with Chris Archer at serialleads to get a satisfactory resolution.

From: Brian Houghton

Subject: re: mako won't turn on

Here's the problem:

After a hard reset, the battery meter is reset to 0%.  This is done, regardless of the actual charge held in the batteries.

To fix the problem, right after the (or a) hard reset, connect the power source DIRECTLY to the back of the Mako.  Then allow the unit to charge for a full 6 1/2 hours, until the battery icon in the toolbar stops animating.

NOTE:  The machine will indicate 100% long before and you will see a jump to 81% after fast charging for a while.  It will then switch to trickle charge the rest of the way.  This is done, I believe, because there is actually charge in the batteries and when the Mako can finally read the charge, it will allow it to fast charge until needed.

Hope that this helps.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a tool that would allow me to synchronise my Outlook notes to a jotter file or similar? I used to like the way the palm would synchronise them....

any ideas?

ta,

Tim.

Tim,

I'm afraid not. Neither Psiwin, Intellisync, or Companion Link have this as an option and these are the only three conduit programs available for the 5mx. Even more irritating is that the Series 3 had a lovely program called PsiSync that synced everything from the S3 to Outlook including Jotter to Notes. Your only option is copy and paste using CopyAnywhere. This is a huge hole that has certainly driven some people to the Palm and Pocket PC.

Is it possible to link an existing Sheet or Word file into an Agenda entry? If, for example I have an agenda entry "Meeting with Bob" I often create a Word (or Sheet) file containing additional details or notes for that meeting. However, say I have a pre-existing "Sales Figures" spreadsheet which I want to discuss at the meeting with Bob. How do I link that saved sheet to my new Agenda entry.  Is it possible?

With thanks

Greg

Greg,

Why not just embed the file as an object in the Agenda entry? This is the most straightforward way to handle it. You can also check at the Macro5 site - there are some linking macros there although I always found them much less convenient than just using object embedding. *++++++++++&

Greg,

I use Symlink for this. It is shareware I bought about 5 years ago, unfortunately I think it is no longer supported and don't know if it is still available.

It even allows you to see sketches or sheet files without actually attatching the file, only a link.

Hi All,

As I saw no response to my question on formatting a CF card, I give it one more try.

Is there any general recommendation how to proceed if you have purchased a new CF to use with your Psion 5mx, when it comes to formatting the card? Is the best choice to let the Psion format the CF card or to use the card pre-formatted out of the box? Are the two formats the same or...? In this case the CF card I bought is a  128mB Transcend 25x Ultra Performance..

Germany is divided into states (Bundesländer) like Bavaria, Hessia, and so on, similar to the US.

Certain laws, notably education and culture related ones, are a matter of the states, not the

central government. Arent mentioned the Allgäu. This is not a state but simply a region in

Bavaria, the German Prealps. As with all regions all over the world, they don't like their

neigbours but that's a different story.

There are two ways that I know of.

The cleanest is Symlink from Treesoft, which is a program designed to do precisely this job.  Instead of embedding an object, you embed a link to a file.  Version 1.26 is available to download from TuCows

http://pda.tucows.com/epoc/preview/11324.html, but the Treesoft web site seems to have disappeared, so I'm not sure whether there's any way to regsiter it any more.

Another alternative is to use ExAb from Huub Linthorst

http://website.leidenuniv.nl/~linthorsthjm/exabetal/exab.html

In this case, you can add the name of the file you want to link to (including it's path if it's not on the default path configured in ExAb) in whatever application you're using, and access it using a hotkey

combination.  ExAb is available free as a Macro5 macro, or as shareware as a (much faster) standalone program.  ExAb does lots more besides this - its original purpose was to EXpand  ABbreviations, but Huub has developed it

far beyond that now.    I have always found him very helpful in the past, and responsive to feedback / product improvement / fix requests.

Good luck

not to mention the outdated UK codes in previous versions and, in recent versions, the missing of french national (O or alternative carriers : 2, 4, 5, 8...) and regional (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) codes.

A rather tricky "discripancy" also lies in Dialling (control panel) :

"area" codes has to be PREVIOUSLY correctly set in Time AND, some  of them, to become effective, HAS to be (re)registered in Dialling/.. for each RTC location (Home, Office, etc...)

i.e. in :

Dialling/..location(s) /Edit/Aera code\..

do write nothing = leave void before "Enter" :

=> the "right" Aera" code should sponteanously appear with a nice Beep,  all by itself (ie by? Time)

Subject: SMTP-Authentification with a Psion?

Hi Group,

I've got  a problem with my email Provider. He plans to charge for using his SMPT relay server. I used this to send mails from different sender addresses in order to be able to have better control of spam mails. On the Psion, I can select with Sh+Ct+A on which mail account the present mail should be sent.

I do not want to pay this new extra charge. I have found another provider (www.arcor.de) who offers SMTP relay services for free. However, he wants a special SMTP-Authentification, which Outlook can do easily by setting one more  mark. With my Ericsson MC218 email prog I seem to be stuck: I cannot find a configuration for this.

Do anyone of you know how to configure this? (It is NOT pop before SMPT, and not "authentification of a safe password").

Do anyone of you use (free) smpt relaying with a mail provider that is NOT your ISP? If so, who is the mail provider?

Any other workarounds?

For many years I have used a 1 metre D 9-pin M-F cable on my PCs.  Always connected to a serial port on the back and the other end at the front of the PC.  Then everything is easy to connect.

There are external PC-Card drives with USB interface, similar to the external drives for Compact Flash, MultiMedia Card, etc. It will be difficult to find one in high street shops as there aren't a lot of them and PC-Card (formerly known as PCMCIA) looks to go the way of the Dodo.

An alternative is an external PC-Card drive like the Sony MSAC-PR1 we use at the office. The Sony has a parallel port interface and comes with drivers for Windows 95, 98 and NT. I doubt whether it's still for sale but you might be able to get one on e-Bay or other. Another alternative is a really old one - the Teleadapt Modulette which has a serial interface.

Mail Merge is a simple text editor  with mail merge capability. Mail Merge allows you to merge a form letter with variable information (such as a database of names and addresses of customers). This allows you to have virtually identical documents in which the substance of the documents is the same for every customer, yet each is customized to a particular individual in your database.

I trust you can use Mail Merge for printing labels as well by creating a label sized form.

Dear Jim,

<< Does psiBeam (I assume piBeam is a typo) solve IR incompatibility between Palm OS and Epoc OS? >>

There are no infrared incompatibilities, neither in Psion's implementation nor in that of Palm. Both support the IrOBEX specification - infrared object exchange. A neutral transport mechanism that allows application to exchange data in the form of objects. And an object can be compared with a freight container - it can store any type of data. However, what the object consists of is described, just as a freight container has identification markings on the outside. Which objects, or data types, you can exchange between devices depends on the applications on the sending and receiving device. The electronic diaries on the Psion and well as the Palm support v.Calendar objects - meaning that you can beam an appointment directly from Agenda into Datebook.

Install applications on the Palm and the Psion that support additional objects and you can exchange them using IrOBEX. That's where plBeam comes in - it adds the file object to the standard object types of an EPOC Release 5 based Psion. Meaning that you exchange files via IrOBEX with a Palm (V and higher) as they support file objects as standard. Whether you can do something with the file on the Palm is another story.

<< What function does Symbian Editor play in this? >>

Symbian's Editor is IrOBEX aware. Highlight a section of text in the Editor and you can beam it directly into an application on another device that supports ASCII text objects.

<< If I put a Word doc in the current window, will the macro mark it and allow psiBeam to send it, assumably as a text file? >>

EPOC Word is also IrOBEX aware so that it's Word that will pack the highlighted section of the document into an EPOC Word object. What happens depends on the implementation of the receiving device. It can decline the exchange when it doesn't have an application that supports EPOC Word objects. Alternatively, it can accept the exchange, storing the EPOC Word object as a file.

Subject: International Dialling Prefixes, contacts, object to an Agenda entry, Error RMRZ

Answer to: Darryl Kempster

Re.: International Dialling Prefixes - I always use The Dialer outside the UK. I can use on the same day a mobile phone, GPRS, a straight landline and one with a prefix in a hotel. Between hotels that prefix can change again as well. I suppose the basic database of the Psion has not been updated for many years now.

Re. contacts - The file is \System\Data\Contacts.cdb. However, you'll find it difficult to use it. I left my contact details in my DATA file and use Contacts only for email addresses as it works with the email program.

Answer : Greg Monney

Re. object to an Agenda entry - In my Agenda file I can only use Word, Sketch and Voice Notes as objects, not Sheet files. You can copy the text of an existing WORD file with copy and paste to the object in the Agenda file, but you can't attach the original file as an object.

Answer : Peter Rand

Re. Error in RMRZip - It might help if you close the archive (Ctrl-L) in RMRZip before exiting the program. Sometimes it happened that zip files I created on the Psion were impossible to open on another machine, but if first closing the archive it did work.

Subject: Adding memory chips to S7/netBook

This is really not that difficult. Put 4 fingers on the left cover underneath the screen and move it towards you without putting too much downward pressure.  Once opened, push the memori chip in place and push it down.

The first time I did it the screen went blank, even after a soft reset. I took it out again and the S7 worked ok. Put it in again and the S7 worked, but did not show the added memory. Another soft reset did the trick and it worked.

I now have around 19 Mb memory free to use.
