Kevin,

in Contacts, under File - More, there is the option Import contact...; by selecting the .vcf file created by PhoneMan, the details of your SIM card can be merged into your contacts database.

Hi Jan,

Sorry, I thought you'd get loads of replies to this, so I didn't bother ;-)

In general, I think it is best to format in the Psion and this is what I always do. However, I have found that those formatted in a Digital Camera seem to work just fine.

What you must NEVER do is use a PC to format the CF card - I did this once and it made a right mess of things.

If you have to switch often, consider using one of those boxes which were/are used for switching different printers to a PC. I use this at home and in the office to connect the Psion to the PC/Psiwin or to the modem.

However, several adaptors were needed until it worked. Those multi-plugged cables that come with modems are great for this  I adapted one as a nullmodem cable.

Once installed, it is very comfortable to use!

Thank you for advice from Itamar, who reckons it's OK, and Rolf, who doesn't. When you talk about output voltage varying on unregulated supplies, Rolf, is the result likely to be just that the Psion wouldn't work on the supply, or that it would suffer damage?

]

MHO: a regulated supply is a must. I would not dare to use an unregulated one. But the regulated ones are not expensive any more.

I use an original Psion supply for travelling - they are so light and small.

In the office I have a noname regulated cheapo supply, never with any problems. The plug needs to be the right one, with correct polarity, of course.

Chris,

consider getting a cable from serialleads which brings the external DC power via the serial cable to the Psion. I use this in my office setup: very convenient, just one plug for serial and power connection.

Hi,

Replying to Greg Monney, Jmentioned CreateLink (and FollowLink) Macro(s) on Pascal Nicolas' site. I found the Context macro but even using the Google search engine I couldn't find the others!

It'll be a while before I use anything like that but I will and until I see those macros I'll not know whether they'll be any use to me. Can anyone help?

Incidentally, my uncle wasn't Bob.

Hi all,

A couple of things of possible interest...

1) PalmTime's website - which has been down for many months - is now back up at their own domain (www.palmtime.com).  A mixture of good freeware and shareware.  Worth checking out if you never saw their old site.

2) Simon Quinn's excellent ebook reader - sensibly called Ebook - has been made freeware since November.  It's at

http://www.geocities.com/ebookepoc/  Argubly the best generic ebook reader for EPOC IMHO.

I've no connection with either - just thought you'd like to know.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a network adapter with the P7 in order to interface the psion with a network? I have a psion dacom global isdn ready gold card but dont think this will suffice. If it is possible, which is the best to use?

Thanks for the info on reading MSWord files on the psion. Does anyone know what the extension .WPS means? I think this is also MSWord of sorts. I tried simply changing the extension to .doc but this had no effect. Does nConvert read .WPS files?

Subject: Re: CF Card Formatting/Dead Revo/Mako

Jan R Gustafsson asks about formatting CF cards. I've never formatted any of the CF cards I've used on either my 5ive or 5mx. I just inserted them into the slot and started using them.

Re: Dead Revo/Mako, Jack wrote:

> You could give a try to the "freezer solution"

After trying everything else with my Mako and its damned battery problem, I did a hard reset, plugged in the AC, stuck it in the freezer. Occasionally checking on it, the red light stayed on for about 4 hours (usually it stays on for less than 5 minutes), then went to the trickle charge. After 13 hours in the freezer, the battery icon stopped animating (that's the first time I've ever seen the animation stop with the AC connected). Took it out, let it thaw. Turned it on, installed the "Revo Battery Upgrade.sis" (can't remember just where I got it). Let it run down. It started to turn itself off after the battery showed 25%. Could no longer turn it on after a 20% turn off. That's a lot better than before - anywhere from 50% to 85%. Connected the AC. The fast charge red light stayed on about 2 minutes. It's been trickle charging 17 hours now and the battery icon is still animating, but slowly. I only turn it on every hour or so just to check the animation.

Everything I've read says a regular charge should take about 6-1/2 hours so I'm not convinced the freezer fix works for me. :-(

I've been messing with this thing for about a year now. Perhaps the trash can fix will work. :-)  As far as I'm concerned, Psion did the world a favor going out of the Revo/Mako business.

Sorry for the length, but I wanted folks to know exactly what I did.

Re.: quick fix revo - If you don't succeed yourself, try and book yourself in for a repair on the spot at POS Ltd., ww.posltd.com.

Answer : Chris Cooper

Re. mains power - You can still use mains power as you can get a cable that connects to the serial port and also gives mains power. The docking station does this as well. If you can't find either, contact me off digest and we'll settle something for my docking station I don't use anymore.

Please don't use the message separator "*++++++++++&" as your separator between your answers as it will probably mess up the digest (some of your text disappeared I believe as well as the message before yours ...)

Re. Embedding in Agenda - I don't think you can embed an existing file into an Agenda entry, only with copy and paste (please enlighten me if I am wrong). WIth third party programs as described in the digest it is apparently possible.

Answer : Jan R Gustafsson

Re. CF card formatting - I seem to remember from memory that if you format a CF card on a PC you get more space than if formatted on a Psion (but forgot the technical explanation). However, if the card is already formatted I would just use it and don't bother to try and reformat it. As always, if it ain't broke, ain't fix it !

Answer to: Mike McConnell

Re. Faxing - I just tried a test of sending a fax of 3 pages to my office with my 6310. On my Psion it said twice sending page 1, than sending page 2 and got stock in second time sending page 2. On my PC at work (= fax) I received the first page twice and the second page, but very unclear and not readable. I seem to remember reading somewhere that a fax of 1 page is no problem, but multiple pages is. Sorry, can't help you further but to find a service where you can send an email which will be translated and sent as a fax.

Re.: Dialing Prefixes - The answer is to use the little handy program The Dialer. It will allow you to enter any number and connect, after which you can switch to Web or Email.

Re. Revo in freezer - But don't defrost it in the microwave .... <BG>

Re. Linking in Agenda - Your solution is not embedding an object, as the object is entered as the text of the entry. The purpose was to embed a sheet file in an entry without showing the full text of it.

Answer to: D.D.White

Re. dacom fax - the init string is AT&F, the other two empty. Also, the flow control should be Hardware (RTS/CTS). If this does not help you, I don't have an answer for your problem. Can you try their website or technical support ?

Answer to: Keith Clarke

Re. Power adaptor - Although I don't remember ever having read that someone had a problem with his Psion due to the adaptor used, if you are worried about it buy a Psion one. In the end taken over many years of usage the difference is not more than a penny a day.

I'm enjoying the discussions of how people use their Psions, esp. as a stand alone, and the indepth info on how they use various Apps. I've taken to copying various discssions to a txt file, printing out and then playing with the programs mentioned. I've even resorted to reading the manual. As I cut the names off the text I copied, I don't know who mentioned these, but I would like a bit more detail.

Agenda. -Puts times on one page and To-dos on other pg. Finally got that to work, but "Notes" were also placed on a page and I didn't understand how that was done. What kind of notes? Notes you write ahead of time or a place you setup for writing notes on things that happen today?

-Another put commonly used events on 1 Jan 2020, then copies to put ina current date. Examples?, I assume things like haircut, vet appt, or?

Mentor program. Someone mentioned, (Kate?) I downloaded and briefly looked at, but could you give an example or two, how you use and why it's useful?

More Linking to Agenda-- looking on Pascal NICOLAS Macro 5 site

http://pnicolas.epocboulevard.com/ I saw macros that talked about linking files to Agenda; like  Agn-Link v1.00 by B. Ritchie => link agenda items to any files with associated applications. I've never used this macro.

As someone who has been using this adapter for approx. a year with my 5mx, I would think it is safe for you to use it. The main worry about unregulated supplies is that when the current drain is very low the

voltage may increase enough to damage the Psion. However, there are two things I can say to this:

The adapter in question is called "Universal Regulator" - of course this doesn't guarantee that its voltage IS regulated!

More importantly, I've just measured the output voltage with a digital multimeter (i.e. a very low current drain) and it gives 6.4volts. I feel sure this is safe enough for the Psion.

Many thanks to everyone for their replies and assistance - what a brilliant, helpful and knowledgeable group this is.

Some thoughts on the replies:

>> Why not just embed the file as an object in the Agenda entry?

This is just what I believe can not be done in Agenda - not with an existing file !  Surprising, since you _can_ launch a new one.

>>You can also check at the Macro5 site - there are some linking macros there.

I didn't find any on my first searches, but have now (see below). Thanks.

>>I use Symlink for this.

Excellent - cheers, Andrew and Julie. That does the job - just what I needed!  I hope I can register it.

>>Another alternative is to use ExAb from Huub Linthorst

I'm a registered user of ExAb, but hadn't thought of this use, Julie.

>>that's an easy one : ... copy ... Ctl-V (paste)   Isn't Bob your uncle? No, not really. Have then to store two versions of the same thing, and changes made in the copy will not be reflected in the original file.

Jan, I'd format it just to get rid of anything that might be on there, but in truth I don't think it'll make much odds. As formatting only takes a minute or so, it's not a huge amount of time to waste, and it reminds you to give it a name (Colin the CF card????).

Meanwhile, later on in the digest this caught my eye: (from Jack)

> You could give a try to the "freezer solution", found somewhere else I can't remember.

When I see interesting solutions such as this the question always pops into my mind "how did anyone find out this would work?" Someone, somewhere with an errant Mako must have said "I wonder what happens if I put it in a freezer" or did it fall in there (complete with charger attached) by accident?

It's at times like these I'm glad I've not got a Mako. After all, just how portable is a machine that involves you having to carry around a freezer in case it goes wrong?  :)
