Susan,
<<Another digester (Jim Watson-Gove) gave me another repair source in the UK which also would end up about the same cost but might be a more complete rehab job>>
I'm still checking to find out if D&G's capacity fix is asoftware fix in addition to the bug software fix, or if they put a larger battery in the unit.
I've snt an EMail but haven't ad a reply so far.
They don't claim to "repair" Psions, only modify them. I'm hoping that the distinction here is moot.
In any case I plan to try them out after my 5mx gets back from Psion USA.

Subject: How to exclude files from backup
Hi,
Sometimes I do have files on my Psion 5mx cf-card that I don't want to be backed up by Psiwin.
E.g. mp3 files that are already stored elsewhere on my PC.
Is there a way to exclude those files from being backed up?

Dear Brian,
<< It seemed that if the psion was set to automatically switch off then Psiwin would start a new copy of wprntsvr.exe each time it was switched back on >>
This is incorrect behaviour as wprntsvr.exe - the Windows Print Server used for printing via the PC - needs only to be launched once. The same goes for other components like the Connection Server - the one that polls the serial port and shows a straight or squiggly line on the system tray depending on connection - and CopyAnywhere.
I've installed PsiWin on about 25+ different PCs - desktops, laptops, servers and Windows releases - and haven't seen them behave the way your Windows 2000 PC does. Looks like there's either something wrong in your Windows 2000 set-up or that your chosen set-up triggers this behaviour. Preventing the Psion from switching off may stop this behaviour but it removes the symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem.

Dear Vlad,
<< Just noticed that the two MXpro-s I have have different screens... one is a somewhat more yellowish, lighter green... >>
Oh dear! I hope this doesn't revive the 'Green versus Grey' debate.
For those who've missed it - Psion had two LCD screen suppliers during the Series 3a era. One of the manufacturers produced a screen with a slight yellow/green tint compared to the grey of the screens from the other manufacturer. Some people found the 'green screen' easier to read. Which isn't surprising as some have more difficulties than others with picking up text and drawings on a grey background. A slight yellow/green tint is just what their eyes need.
Problem was that a few people became convinced that the 'green screen' was better in all respects. They couldn't understand why Psion continued to produce Series 3a models with those awful, terrible, unreadable grey screens. Some even trawled from shop to shop because their new/replacement Series 3a had to have a green screen. And when the Series 3c came out they immediately asked whether it came with their cherished green screen.
Others couldn't understand why such a big thing was made out it. They noticed the the difference between the two screens but this didn't effect their readability in practice. Some even preferred the grey screen over the green. Needless to say that this was heresy to green screen evangelicals - triggering a "Yes, it is" versus "No, it isn't" type of 'debate'.

<< Does anyone know wheather the original Mobile Internet Messaging Solution or Message Express SSDs, labeled 3c will work on a series 3a with a 3fax modem (9600)? >>
Psion's Internet e-mail package for the Series 3a and higher was called PsiMail Internet. The Message Express package you're referring to is SMS messaging software. The package is long out of date as it only worked with a cable connection to the Nokia 21xx and Ericsson 6xx models. A third-party e-mail application for the Series 3a, 3c and 3mx is called eMail-It and will be available from Mike McConnel's web site (www.mikemcc.net).

Cardscan is not only wonderful, it is magnificent. It is fast and perfect with my 5mx and my mc 216. With the new OS it works also perfect with the netBook. With the old OS part of the address was put into notes.

Subject: Backup Archives
I was told that the archived backups are not complete backups. So then how
complete are the archived backups and what are their use?
How can get the psion sw to make serial backups without overwriting the most
recent one? I like to have about 10 serial backups in case I backup a
problem.
Thanks,
Chris

Now for this I have a solution. Being a regular happyPsion Camper I soon discovered the benifits of a headtorch, I highly recommend the Ptezl diode sort whichruns for over 100hours YES 100 hours on 3 AAA, itgives off a sort of moonlight white which takes a bitof getting used to.

Subject: 5mx pens / longevity of screen cable repair
Hello All,
I have now managed to lose the pens from both my 5mx and my spare MC218.... Is anyone aware of anyone offering them for sale still, or can I make anyone an offer they can't refuse??
Does anyone have any experience yet of the longevity of the POS screen cable repair? My first one went after two years and June will bring the second anniversary of the repair - I wonder if the fix is better than the original?
Best wishes,
Chris

Subject: Cf-cards on Psion. Revo in freezer
Hello to all ( and Jan G)
I gave the wrong adress for Palmtop User: you should write www.palmtop.co.uk
(not palmtopco at once...). Sorry about that.
Some more info on CF cards: check
www.pscience5.net/hints_tips/compact_flash.htm (apparently written by Martin
Guthrie...). An amazing piece of knowledge on the subject.
To Susan Hoffman (and all)
I used to sell so-called "intelligent terminals" made in UK by Microscribe
(a competitor of Psion in the field and industry data collecting market) and
these were supposed to withstand very low temperatures (we would put them in
the freezer to check whether the LCD panel was still operating -which was
the case, though with some delay...). But these "roughened" equipments were
completely waterproof and sealed, and I would certainly NOT advise any of
you to put their Revo or 5mx in the cold, where electronical components
could be severely damaged and moist ambient air become icy inside the
machine.
A bientôt
Stéphane (Grenoble, France).

Re.: Notes in Agenda - I think that was me <G>. The notes I put in an attachment with Ctrl-Shift-Z, which gives you a WORD file to add as many notes as you like.
I also like the reports of the various users on how they use specific programs. Any more ideas ?

Answer to: Robert Howkins
Re.: DIMM, Data transfer - A pitty you did not react earlier, I already installed the DIMM <G>. But for POS to charge £ 25.- for something so simple is outrageous !
RE. DATA export - Do Menu -> More -> Export as text file and export the whole DATA file to a text file, which you can import in most other DATA programs.
Answer to: Maria Jette
RE. phone in Europe - Sure, I have for example an Israeli SIM card which I use when I travel to Israel several times a year. Some people that travel a lot have several SIM cards for different countries. You can even buy for some phones a dual SIM card connector inside your phone which allows you to have two SIM cards in the phone at the same time.
Answer : Will Green
Re. World readership - Thanks for this research. Maybe the result is biased to the English speaking world as it is in English ? Anyhow, statistically you have reached 7% of the readership which is a lot more than most researches are based on. I forgot how to calculate the error in the result <G>.

Subject: Answering the digest,
Answer to: Will Green
Re.: Answering the digest - There are several ways to efficiently answer the digest messages. Rolf Vonau wrote a special program called Dighandler which will help you with this. Personally I do it as follows. First I have a macro to copy the digest and paste it in a WORD file. This allows me to keep the digest open while writing my answers. If I want to answer something I copy the name and the subject with CoCoPaPa (you can also copy part of the text you want to repeat), move to my email program and paste these one after the other in the text. Than I have another small macro that will copy the text of the subject, paste it into the Subject field at the top of the message and move the cursor back to the end of the Subject field of the particular answer. Than I write my message. In this way I can always move back to the digest to reread the original message I am answering or find additional information.

Subject: additional info for: Mako won't turn on
To Susan:
Some users of Mako / Revo, including myself, believe that there is a file that contains faulty battery calibration information. If you do a complete restore of a previous system and you WERE having problems with the charge level, this might re-install the problematic file (I tend to think it is probably "system.ini").
Thought that this might be of interest to you.
