Psion pens are regularly for sale on eBay.
Also, a series 7 (or maybe a netbook) sold for £125 a couple of weeks
ago. It was only up for 2 hours before being bought. I spotted it 2

"Lucky SOD! My 256 Mb CF is around 2/3 full, and a full backup of my MC218 takes several hours."
Try backing up using a PCMCIA adapter (for a laptop) or an external CF card adapter (for a desktop), coupled with Second Copy 2000. As I mentioned elsewhere SC2K (www.centered.com) works just like FlashBack. Once the first backup has been done only the modified files are backed-up subsequently - with any files deleted on the CF (while still in the Psion) also being deleted from the backup (destination) directory on the PC. A backup of my nearly full 128MB card usually only takes a couple of *minutes* including the app's initial scan. No reason to suffer a 'several hours' CF backup!
-------------------Copied from www.centered.com----------------
Second Copy is designed to maintain a backup of the source files in the destination folder. Second Copy does this by comparing the source and destination files and folders every time it runs a profile. It checks the date and time stamps of the files in the two locations and decides which files need to be copied.
The first time Second Copy runs a profile, it copies all specified files from the source to the destination. After that it copies new or changed files. It also copies any files that are missing from the destination. So if you remove some files from the destination they will be recopied when Second Copy runs next time.
This is different than the conventional backup programs that do "full backup" and "incremental backup". The conventional "full backup" gives you a full set of all the files and the conventional "incremental backup" give you a set of only changed files.

"Does anyone have any experience yet of the longevity of the POS screen cable repair? My first one went after two years and June will bring the second anniversary of the repair - I wonder if the fix is better than the original?"
It depends mostly on how often you open/close your machine :). I only open/close my 5mx once or twice a week - I'm hoping the cable will last a good while! FWIW, I think that POS uses the same cable that Psion does; but there is a company in Germany (www.srsgmbh.de) who advertises that they are using an *improved flat cable without the little holes* (where reportedly most cracks start from) for their repairs. They also sell these improved cable for brave do-it-yourselfers!

"I'm still checking to find out if D&G's capacity fix is asoftware fix in addition to the bug software fix, or if they put a larger battery in the unit. I've snt an EMail but haven't ad a reply so far."
Hi Jim,
AFAIK, D&G's 'fix' to lengthen the *runtime* (not actually the capacity) is *software* only. The Revo/Mako battery is calibrated by default to set aside a substantial percentage of the charge (20%?) in order to suitably preserve the contents of the unit's RAM. D&G simply reduces the percentage set aside substantially, thereby providing a longer runtime. Really though, why mess around with a Mako repair and upgrade when English OS 5mx Pro's are available at Clove for £225 and standard 5mx's are available at Exportech for £212 (with a free case)? I moved from a Mako to a 5mx (with a couple of Palms in-between) and couldn't be happier. I've just ordered a Transcend 30X 512MB CF card - and with about 300MB of it already accounted for I couldn't imagine going back to a Psion with a measly 16MB (actually less) of storage! Now a Revo 3 with a backlight, an SD slot, and a LiON pack - that I'd consider!

I wonder what the difference is then. I assume you do use long filenames on your Psions, as it's only the long names that cause probems. Will WindoZe create a trashcan on your CF if you delete something?"
The difference is that you're probably using Windows 98SE and Rolf isn't :) Windows 98SE will indeed truncate long filenames on the CF. I don't know if it's true, but I've read that Win 98SE has a bug in its PCMCIA driver and that this bug is the cause of filenames being truncated. At any rate, I find that backing up my CF to my laptop using a PCMCIA adapter works just fine, with *no* truncating of filenames etc., using a wonderful little app: Second Copy 2000. SC2K is basically FlashBack for the PC - it even offers profiles just like FlashBack. I use SC2K weekly to backup the CF in my 5mx to my Panasonic Toughbook laptop's HD, and then the laptop's D: partition and Desktop to an external, PCMCIA-attached, IBM shock-mounted HD. I should also mention that though I do browse the CF while it's sitting in the PCMCIA adapter from within Windows, and I do add, delete, move, rename and otherwise manipulate files on the CF in Windows, I *rarely* see filenames being truncated any more. I do notice that if I clear *everything* off the CF and then copy my backup files back to the CF from the PC - then I *will* see quite a few truncated filenames; but the data itself is intact and ok - I just name the files back manually. I haven't needed to copy back a backup though since I reformatted my CF disk with Smart Format (Fat 16/16), and so I'm only seeing a very occasional filename being truncated and uppercased now. As for that recycle bin - it's just a folder on the Psion; it's perfectly safe to trash it! :)

Answer to: Christopher Gharibo
Re.: Backup Archives - If a file is present in the back-up but not anymore on the Psion, it will be archived to the "archive level". This means that if you by mistake deleted a file from your Psion, you can still find it back in the archive folders. The next time you back-up and it is not present on your Psion it will be moved to the next level of archive folder untill in the end it is deleted from the back-up folders. You can choose somewhere in Psiwin the level of archive folders, but I am not sure how many levels is the maximum. You could create 10 serial back-ups by creating 10 different folders to back-up to and resetting Psiwin each time to a different folder. However, it would mean that each back-up will take a long time as there will be a lot of differences between the back-up folders and the current Psion ones.

Re. Lights out no keyboard - Another solution is a small program called Nightkeys. I am typing this now from a small keyboard at the bottom of my screen. It is a little bit difficult and slower, but I think you get used to it quite easily. The main problem is that when mishitting the space bar you move back to the main screen and continue typing on a different line. Otherwise a great little program.

Re. 5mx pens - i think they are still available form the usual places like Clove, Expansys, Widget, etc. They do a neat little package of 3 coloured all plastic ones for something below 4 pounds which will fit in the holder as well.

1 year since repair & opening the shell 20-odd times a day. Where's that in the statistics? POS did a good job fast & were helpful on the phone.
Just that (not starting another debate but,) the new screen-case is also a darker grey than the (original) rest - and the protection foil on the screen itself is slightly bulging. Also a known dis/re/pute? :-)

Copying several Gigs of data from my 13 Gig external harddisk via a parallel port interface would probably be rather tedious (if it will work at all). <<<<
Actually Owen I used a parallel port CF reader on my PC for 4 years and only just switched to a USB reader - and then only because I wanted a 'multi-card' reader. The parallel port reader was (I think) perhaps slightly slower - but not by a great deal. I don't know what the spec.'ed speed of a parallel port is (to compare against USB 1.1) - but are you sure you're not confused with a serial port (which certainly would be
snail-like!)? You could copy an entire 128Mb CF card full of data on my parallel reader in about 15 minutes I think...

I had decided to register Symlink; but the registration service suggested in the help file (Shareit) now lists the app as 'unavailable'. Anybody know of any other way to buy this app? I find it quite handy to be able to link my Agenda tasks to relevant folders and files. I hope this isn't yet another unregisterable program!
<<<<
Unfortunately the author (John Forrest) has disappeared from the Psion Pscene. I use SoundTrans (also his) which I'm thankfull I registered some years ago. Al Richey had to remove John's program(s) from RMRSoft as people couldn't register them anymore...

I'm trying to locate a 'live' download for CalcIt by Colin Shearing. So far all the links I've found are dead. Does anyone know an URL where this macro can still be downloaded from? Alternatively can someone email the file to me? I'm also looking for Colin's other macros: DateIt, DateOn5 and JotPad. I'm also looking for CreatLink and FollowLink mentioned on the Digest recently.
<<<<
Another 'est disparu'... I typed in Colin's old web address (http://www.btinternet.com/~colin.shearing/Psion.htm) into the Web Archive (http://web.archive.org) and (evenually) it came back with a number of caches - the last being Oct 11, 2000. With a bit of jumping around, I managed to download Re-Date (but nothing else) before the Web Archive started timing out on me. You might want to send an email to the guys at PocketIQ (www.pocketiq.com) as they used to offer all his software I
believe - they may still have local copies.

Martin, with ref. to the diff between ver 1 and ver 1.2, I only know that the hardware has been slightly modified by Psion so as to accept PC Cards treue to official specs (but some people already mean that this an outdated format...) on the Netbook ver 1.2. Also, I am not very familiar with this machine. I shall know more in a few weeks time, but again it seems that teh Netbook II is a mere fantasy...
<<<<
Thanks for the reply Stéphane. Actually I managed to get myself a v1.2 motherboard 2nd-hand netBook (< 6 months old). It was ridiculously cheap (just to depress anyone who recently went out and spent full price!
<grin>) - UKP 225 (say approx. €/$ 350) inc. 32Mb DIMM, PSU, etc. I found it on Loot - but there are similar prices (well, slightly higher actually - I checked) being paid on eBay's UK site. And you're right about the mod. Psion call it the 'Power Mod.' and it basically lets the machine deliver more power to the PCMCIA slot so that Ethernet/GPRS/Wi-Fi/Modem cards that need it will work. Oh, and the word I've heard about the netBook II is that it's certainly not fantasy...
I must admit, the netBook is a magnificent machine - I wish I'd bought one years ago!

With the help of a lot of very helpful data contributors Stéphane. :-)
BTW, having tried similar experimentation (to that on my website) with my new netBook, I notice that netBook (and S7) CF timings are a lot different to 5/5mx timings. I'll investigate further and update the website on this in due course.

However, it doesn't say that it is regulated -- does this indicate that it is *not* regulated?
>
Since you have used it and it works, be happy. Most probbly it is a regulated one - it seems to be made especially for the Psion (long tip).
I am not really sure how it should be 'officially' printed on the case. My Psion Original supply has "6V =" on it, the = sign means DC. Eventually unregulated supplys have a = sign with one of the lines dotted on it.
Never use one which says 6V ~ on it - this means AC which is no good for the Psion.
This info about markings is only according to my best of knowledge, no guarantee. Maybe someone with a more settled knowledge can jump in.
Of course, one can measure it with the proper equipment, but I don't wanna go into that.

Subject: ABP Problem, Screen Cable Repair Question
As part of my New Year resolution, I'm tracking my spending. Cut back on food, clothes, heat and spend more on computers! Still learning ABP; investments being the next project to enter. After reading a tutorial on RMRBank, believe I have a grasp of Accounts, and Investments. But in looking at my end of Jan. info I found an error, or calculation I can't seem to track down. In one catagory "computer" (of course) I find only 2 charges totally $29.++ but the monthly budget vs spent shows "computer" at $38.++. I can't seem to find that extra charge or to find where I might have put a credit vs a debit or something else. I used Find to look for the word computer (found only the 2 charges), various amounts to search for, both debit and credit, no luck. Any help ideas for listings/printouts to find my error, I'd appreciate.
I'm in the US, but have looked at the cable repair info from
http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/kabel.html Has anyone tried this repair and how is it working out? The cables are suppose to be better than ones from Psion.
Thanks, WoodyB

Subject: 9210 firmware upgrade, bugs
As my 9210 is still under a year old I'm thinking of taking advantage of being able to get its firmware upgraded free by an official UK Nokia service centre whilst I still have the chance. Mine is v3.62 and I believe the latest version is v4.13. The only thing is know for sure is the later firmware allocates the very limited execution memory (RAM) more efficiently - something very useful when having so little to begin with! Are there any other major improvements to the firmware?
I'm sure I've read somewhere that there is a bug on the 9210 as follows. If you try to set your own incoming SMS alert (as opposed to the standard ones in ROM) by using your own wav sound files then there is no sound played at all when receiving an SMS (voice call ring tones are OK). This then affects the clock alarm with it not sounding (but it does still display on-screen) until a reset is performed. Using a standard tone from ROM works fine and doesn't affect the other alarms.. Perhaps this is now fixed with firmware v4.13? Can any 9210 owners confirm this?
