Can anyone tell me what the following files are? I'm reinstalling some of my larger programs to D: and I've found these files in C:\System\Libs. If I knew what app(s) they belong to I might be able to move that app or those apps to D: to free up some more RAM.

Subject: Luach is now Freeware! \o/
I recently contacted Aron Landy, the developer of Luach, in order to register his wonderful program and I was quite pleasantly surprised when he emailed me back with both the good news that he had decided to make Luach freeware, and with a free registration code. I have now received his permission to announce on the Digest that Luach is indeed now freeware and that anyone wanting to register Luach should contact him directlyin order to receive his or her own free registration code.
Info on Luach is here:
http://www.consulttheexpert.com/aronlandy.com/luach.htm
Luach for EPOC can be downloaded here:
http://www.aron.mcmail.com/luach/luach548.zip
For those who don't already know: Luach is an altogether excellent Jewish calendaring app which can write a number of variables (such as Jewish Holidays, Shabbos times, etc.) into Agenda as well as providing the proper times to Daven (pray) Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv - all times being configurable according to one's preferred halachic authority and location. I know that there are at least a couple of other Jewish Psioneers subscribed here and even if one only uses Luach to keep tabs on upcoming Jewish holidays - it's well worth the minimal time and effort to download!

Subject: this "US phones in Europe" thing
Hello, Rolf et al--
Yes, our US mobile phone system IS a complex world! Here are my replies to Rolf's quoted replies to my quoted original, which itself quoted something sent to me from a travel site... Iand I hope never to have to way that again!;-)
<< I'd heard Rick S. on the radio, saying that US phones couldn't be used in Europe! I wrote to say it wasn't so ... >>
Rolf said:
>There's nothing wrong in Rick Steve said. A US mobile phone -
>one >that's developed for the US market - won't work in Europe as >there are >no AMPS, CDMA, TDMA, iDEN or GSM1900 networks to be found >there.
Au contraire, my friend! Perhaps I should re=phrase it, though: *most* US cell phones won't work in Europe-- for starters, they won't work with a GSM system. However, there are now plenty of tri-band phones in the USA, presumably designed for the US market, considering they work on our band (we're the band that necessitates the "tri"). When I land on your lovely continent, I merely turn on the phone and switch over to YOUR lovely bands, and Bob's your uncle, as many Psionists would say.
<< ... I got my phone "unlocked" for free by T-mobile ... >>
>Don't count on this service being free of charge.
Rolf! I'm shocked-- SHOCKED! This indicates that you didn't finish reading that quote from the travel guy! He points out that T-Mobile is unique in providing that service for free. The other GSM providers DON'T, according to him.
> US network operators, like their European cousins, subsidise
>the >purchase price of a mobile phone. They get the subsidy back by >means >of (a) the operator lock on the phone and (b) by a fixed >monthly fee >and/or the call charges.
This is absolutely correct. I started to write something similar to Itamar, but got distracted and gave up. The only thing you didn't point out is the period of bondage the user undergoes in return for their discounted phone and whatever special calling plan they sign on for. The whole thing is so convoluted that I put off getting a mobile phone until last spring! Also, I'd been waiting for GSM coverage to become available, and tri-band, IrDA phones to show up, for Psion reasons. Ironically, now that I have the phone, I've never used it with the Psion. However, I have used it with great success in Germany, Switzerland, England and Mexico, and plan to give the unlocking-SIM thing a whirl next time.
All that said, I'm an old-fangled, acoustic, classical musician, not an engineer. I am not remotely involved in the tech world. I'm a recent convert to the mobile phone world, but this was something I was pretty sure I grasped.
And now, back to low-tech Rossini!
Maria in Minneapolis
p.s. I've written to T-Mobile's email address for unlocking SIMs, and will report back with their reply.

Subject: Re. backup and restore
>> Is there something I am doing wrong? How can I set up PsiWin to force a full backup rather than an incremental backup (I understand this is what it does every time when I connect the Mako). What exactly does the PsiWin option of number of file versions to archive actually do, if there is no way of selecting from which archive I wish to restore? Which is the newest archive version, the one with the highest number or the lowest? <<
Daniele,
As far as I am aware, a restore only works on the backup folder, not on the archive folders. The archive function simply allows you to have multiple backups of individual files; ie. if you write a document called Doc1 and then do a backup, Doc1 is saved in the backup folder. If you work on Doc1, rename it as Doc2 and do a backup, Doc2 is copied to the backup folder while Doc1 is moved to the archive1 folder. This will continue until a copy of the document is in each archive folder, at which point the oldest will be pushed out the next time a backup is done. The newest archive is archive1.
Every time you backup your Psion, it is in effect a full backup, as what you (should) end up with in the backup folder is a complete copy of the state of your Psion when the backup was done. If you did a full (as opposed to incremental) backup every time, it would be very slow and would produce the same result.
Cheers, Ian Chapple.

I thought I'd ask my friends here before resorting to revisiting the sites of all the many apps I'm using just to check which apps require a separate or special netBook install file. It would be *most helpful to me* if those Psioneers fortunate enough to own a netBook would simply scan the list below and let me know just the ones that *do* require a separate install (from the 5mx one) to run properly on the netBook. Thanks aforehand!
<List cut>
<<<<
I can't speak to all of the apps. since I don't use all of them but:
You won't need to install Opera on the nB since it's included free in
the OS (v5.14 of Opera, Build 158 of the OS - free download from Psion).
So is nFTP if you need an FTP client.
As the author of VoiceMan5, I'm not sure if you'll use it much on the nB (although it should work fine). The nB doesn't have 'record' buttons on
the outside like the 5/mx and so you can't use it as a 'handheld'
recorder so easily. Of course you can still record messages for
yourself when it's open. I did check to see if the one button which IS
on the outside of the machine (the notify button) could be taken over by
the program to make it run as a recording device - but the main problem
is that it doesn't turn the machine on when pressed which kind've
stymies that idea...
Personally I'd recommend installing all the apps. from their SIS files
anyway (instead of just copying over their install directories). It's
good practice and helps the OS track what's going on better anyway. And
you might lose program settings and/or data if you don't copy both c:
and d: directories if you've got programs installed on a CF card. I
collected all the zip files I new I'd want on the nB together before I
got it, copied them all onto the machine when it arrived and then just
used RMRZip to install everying on the machine itself.

Darren,
I don't know of any packages that are available specifically to meet your requirement. It would probably be fair to state that this is probably a result of Psion having a relatively poor user base in the U.S.
If you are prepared to consider an alternative to a dedicated application I would urge you to consider PsiDat (http://www.millican.info/Home/PsiDat.htm) a Freeware database application. This might allow you to achive what you are after but it IS a steep learning curve - I've been using it for a long time now and still finding new capabilities. The ability to export to HTML could be a useful tool in order to 'publish' your scorecards if required.

David,
Two things. First, it was tremendously useful to see another users full list of applications. There was stuff there that I had never heard of and it was fun to check them out to see if they were of use. What is ZipMaster or, more particularly, where can it be found? I had a good look around but couldn't find this application anywhere. I presume it is a zip utility and, while I've no intention to give up the venerable RMRZip it's always good to look at the alternatives.
I didn't see any applications that require a special installation for the netBook. From previous experience the only developers I know of who routinely package separate SIS files are neuon. It might be worth checking for anything you use by them - nConvert & RecycleBin that I could see.

Steve Hodgson

Thought others may find this tip useful.
The PsiWin converter struggles with some Microsoft Word documents especially
those with complex tables, resulting in missing text. The Psion can handle
these documents if you use Microsoft Word to save them as a web document &
then transfer this to the Psion.

Hi,
Woody, you want to organise your new project on your Psion. At <http://www.lexden.co.uk/lpdownload.html> (it was still up on Wednesday this week) there is an organisation program called LifePlan that may help. It's based round one person so it may be more suitable than other Psion programs. It was shareware but is now freeware.
Other freeware that may help:
DeMarco5
NodeMap
Orga
TasMan
Empower.
The alternative is to program yourself or use a database program like PsiDat.
Or pay.
Mentor is supposed to be very good, Mark Esposito's NotePad ditto. There are undoubtedly other programs too.
Good luck,
Phil.

Your expeience is exactly the same as mine.
What I do is open up the PsiWin files on my PC and drag the "backup" file onto my desktop. Then I do a backup. Psiwin cannot find the backup folder to do an incremental backup so it does a full backup. I then either kill the
backup on the desktop, or rename it and save it as an archive.
I do so much file deleting and file enaming that the incremental backup is worthless for me.

Answer to: Martin Guthrie
Re.: Leather treatment - The question is really whether it is needed at all or not, weighing it against the risk of using oils and/or creams and/or wax on the body of the S7. I suppose that as it has never been mentioned no-one has as yet encountered a problem with the leather.
Answer to: Keith Giles
Re. V1 # 163(2) - Actually ... no. Some ISP's do not allow more than an X number of BCC's and if a team member has that problem the digest program automatically divides the digest in several messages not having more than X BCC's. The (2) would mean the 2nd message sent. The number of the team member is right at the bottom of the digest below that part that no-one looks at <G>.
Answer to : Alan Morris & Tony Napier
Re. en route & S7 - My personal advice is not to upgrade to the latest version of Route Planner. Neither the program nor the maps will have changed much (specially highways) and neither worth the money nor the bother involved.
Answer : Kevin Thorne
Re. Answering the digest - Now if the email program could open two messages at the same time, that would be an advantage <G>. My main advantage of copying the digest to a WORD file is that I change the font to Ariel and size 12 to make it easier readible. As to copying the full digest into an answer, even if it would happen you would not see it due to the human eye going over the digest before sending it. Sometimes extra large signatures or automatic advertisements at the bottom also get deleted. However, what does happen still is subscribers answering with the reply function and not changing the subject field "RE: EPOC DIGEST V1 # 162 (4)" which I find disturbing as it will not show you the true subject of the message in the list at the top, or writing "no subject" in the subject field <G>.

RE. Wired LAN - From digest 107: "You might find the discussion thread at

Answer to: Ulrich Hornstein & Darryl kempster
RE. SMTP - Your solution is correct, but for someone who sends a lot of emails more work and one undoubtedly forgets to do this from time to time. It is actually easier to change the default ISP before starting the connection and leave all emails on default. With merlin I have a toolbar in the email program that allows me with macro's to automatically change the default ISP (=SMTP) between my options of: Compuserve, 2x Freeserve (my own and the digest), GPRS and Demon Internet (work). Furthermore, I also have a mailbox set-up to give the possibillity of sending emails with my work email address in the sender box. The macro's will besides changing the default ISP also copy the SMTP address to that mailbox so I can always send emails both privately and for work. So yes, Darryl, just change the email address in the mailbox setting, or create "dummy" mailboxes just for the sake of these addresses and write a small macro that will copy the SMTP address in the default mailbox also to the other ones. Contact me for further details if required.
Answer to: Ulrich Hornstein
Re. Answering the digest - This has already been discussed before and indeed I am comfortable with my way of answering the digest, reducing the overal number of messages and making the work of handling the digest a little lighter.
Answer to: Sajid
Re. Faxing - Click, the penny dropped. In order to receive faxes you need a special phone number from your service provider as it is not possible to receive faxes over a normal GSM line. However, I find it easier to use a service that will receive the faxes for me and send them as a TIF attachment to my emailbox which I can read with MBMView. One such a service is www.yac.com. This way I don't have to have my mobile and Psion ready alligned and can receive and read the faxes when _I_ want to.

Re.: backup and restore - AFAIK Psiwin handles back-up as follows :
- File on Psion, not in back-up : file backed-up
- File on Psion and in back-up : file backed-up by overwriting, old backup file
moved to archive (see Rolf's answer)
- File not on Psion but in back-up: file moved from back-up to archive
- File not on Psion and not in back-up: file moved from archive 1 to archive 2
(etc. as per no. of levels choosen in Psiwin, after that deleted).
I don't understand how you can "rename" a file and than delete the old version, as once renamed the old version has gone. If you use Save-as and than delete the old file, you have created a new file and deleted an old one and these should be handled by Psiwin as per above. You can force Psiwin to do a full back-up by deleting or renaming the back-up folder on your PC or create a new folder for the back-up.

Re. Series 7 DIMM - Your message is clear and enlightning as to the processses at work in a repair shop. You are right, but I was trying to say that for something you can do so easily yourself Gbp 25.- is a lot of money, a little like calling the electrician to change a light bulb <G>.

Re. Plastic pens - Interesting how opinions can differ. I use my yellow one at work and the blue one at home. The third one I gave to my colleague. The original pen sits in it's slot for when I am "on the road". Yes, they do not look like "quality" but are just as easy to use as the original, and being all plastic the chance of scratching the screen is smaller than with the original where the plastic top can break off without you noticing it (for some oil clean your ear with it <BG>). And being bright yellow I always find it back on my paper laden desk.

This makes sense but has not been my experience. Deleted files (IME) have remained in the backup file, and renamed files end up in two locations, old name and new name.
The test to make sure I was not doing something wrong was to make file deletions and renaming files, the doing an incremental backup, followed by a restore.
I have checked al the settings I can find on PsiWin and find nothing to make it otherwise.
Someone out there try this test and let me know the results. My winow machines are still in California so can't test it for a third or fourtth time.
Routinely people tell me that I'm wrong (I've been "fighting" this one for years). I can only believe they are answering theoretically rather than having tested it with a incremental backup with deleted/renamed files followed by a restore.

The solution as Palmtop/TomTom told you is correct - but they didn't explain it very well by the sounds of things. It's not enough to have PsiWin installed (even in multiple partitions!). Rather it's the installation process itself that puts a copy of InstApp back onto your c: drive and will then let TomTom instalation program do it's job. So you literally do have to uninstall and then re-install PsiWin. ............>

Do you mean a specific (color or screen sized) version?
Or a Serial specific registration code? as TomeRaider...
Below are some "7 instal" I can remember of :
Editor (Symbian's) Colored version
Essential Disk Utilities (Registered) don't work on C: with extra DIMMS Macro5 S5mboles and may be few other macros
MobiPocket (Registered)
psiMind color
TomeRaider (Machine Registration)
+ nICQ if you prefer the flower icon green
+ RMRzip if one like the color Addon
+ Navigator
+ 1000Bornes and many other games

thanks everyone for enlightening me about the function of the CF card (OS) in netBook...
at last!... after a week i finally figured out how to connect to the internet with my 7day old netBook and a nokia 6210... what took me so long was the idea of using the travel modem... i didn't know i can connect to the internet just by using the nokia 6210...
if i can connect to the internet without the travel modem why bother with using modems at all?...

Hard drives are normally in a sealed compartment, so I would expect the Microdrive to be the same. So has any fluid dried up in the connector? If you put the drive into a Psion and switched it on then it's possible that any electronic components could have been damaged by the fluid before it dried out.

Subject: PClite 1.01e
Hi,
I`d like to announce an update release of PClite.
PClite is a filemanager application (freeware (OpenSource - join the develper list if interested)) especially designed for the Revo. Should also work on
S5, but netBook not tested.
It offers the typical features for such an app like copy, move, rename, ... Also additional possibility of starting apps, files, ...
You can get it from http://www.golder.de/psion/psioncommander/main.html
The HP is german, the app is english.
If you need more ... give Psion Commander (the big brother) a try which offers much, much more options (colors on netBook, PlugIns, ...) but is still under development.
Regards
Wolfgang

Dear Itamar,
<< This has been discussed extensively in the past, and it has not bene proven that not closing and opening the 5MX will improve the longevity of the screen cable ... >>
That's extremely simple to prove. Buy a brand new Series 5mx and ... never, ever, open it. I'll give you the cast iron guarantee that the screen cable of this 5mx will never fail. <VBG>
It creates another problem, though. One that's similar to a famous thought experiment in quantum physics called 'Schrödinger's Cat'. As the Series 5mx has never been opened you don't know whether the screen cable is functional or defective already. We're therefore dealing with a superposition of states in which the screen cable is *both* functional and defective (at the same time).

Dear Vlad,
<< The nice thing about the site is that they have a download-version for hand-helds, and they used to have one for Epoc-device >>
I don't think so. Psion owners have been sending out requests to AvantGo for an EPOC version for a very long time. Trouble is that the company has only responded to these request with a standard "We're interested in other platforms" e-mail.
There was a Symbian announcement that AvantGo had agreed to develop a version but the announcement only mentioned Symbian OS 6. I also have a copy of a 01/03/2002 news article in which the CEO of AvantGo criticises Symbian for a slow product release - that the company has some of its applications "pretty much ready to go" but can't release them for a lack of devices.

Dear Russell,
<< Recently my IBM Microdrive got swamped in Contact Lens Cleaner fluid ... Has any successfully revived a dead Microdrive? Any tips on flushing it out? >>
The IBM Microdrive is a hard disk and hard disks are tightly sealed to prevent the ingress of dust. Reason is that the read/write head of a hard disk hovers over the disk surface - there's a very tiny air gap between them. I therefore doubt that the lens cleaner has entered the disk compartment. Looks to me that whatever is in the fluid has crystalised, leaving deposits in various places. What I'd do is to use a syringe with Isopropyl alcohol as a kind of pressure jet cleaner. Then to replace the Isopropyl alcohol by demineralised water for a second squirt-and-clean action. Finally, to let the Microdrive dry out in a warm and dry place. This isn't risk-free but worth a try.

I've just mentioned that to David Lir that I made the same move you have made. Could be that my old Sony parallel port drive wasn't one of the fastest but my new USB multi-card drive is approximately 2.5 times as fast. I've also noticed that the speed differences between my various CF card are much more noticeable with the USB drive. The 256 MByte Lexar I have, complete with 12x speed mark and "USB Enabled" logo, is a real flyer compared to my old 10 MByte Psion and 40 MByte SanDisk cards.

What you couldn't know is that my dad has since bought a new Dell 4550 and that I've taken over his old Toshiba Equium to replace my very old Compaq Deskpro 5120. Meaning that I'm currently moving from Windows '95 to '98 and from a Sony parallel port PC-Card drive to a no-name USB multi-card drive. The new drive works very well, is approximately 2.5 times as fast as the Sony and each and every file is transferred as-is.

Subject: Re: Additional info for: Mako won't turn on
Dear Brian,
<< Some users of Mako / Revo, including myself, believe that there is a file that contains faulty battery calibration information ... >>
There's more to it than that, I'm afraid. Below a section from a Psion newsgroup message by Clive Evans, a former corporate support team leader at Psion, concerning the ChaDis application.
[Quote]
There is a gas gauge in the charging mechanism which is far more accurate at determining the charge level within the batteries than the guess made by the OS on the basis of the voltage across the cells.
This is used to control the charging mechanism (after it has been initially calibrated by the first long charge). It is carefully designed to prevent the batteries from being overcharged.
During charging, the OS makes it's best guess as to the charge level of the batteries, and generally this is pretty darn accurate, even given the difficulty of doing this by indirect measurement, however this isn't always the case. It will occasionally believe that the batteries have reached 100% charge when they haven't....
[Unquote]
Clive then writes how the ChaDisapplication reacted to the 100% reported by the machine, something which I understand has now been solved in a later version. He continues as follows.
[Quote]
... the machine now displays 100% charge when in fact it's less so, and the calibration of the software is slightly out of step. Repeat this often enough, and it's possible to be barely actually charging your batteries, and strangely enough they don't last very long ...
[Unquote]
In other words, when you monitor the charge level as reported by the Revo and remove it from the cradle (or disconnect the power supply) the moment 100% is reached, the actual charge level can be (say) 97%. The next time you do this the actual charge level can be 93% when you remove the Revo from the cradle ... etc.
This explains such reports as "My Revo goes from 100% to 60% in no time!" as the 100% indication no longer corresponds with a completely charged set of batteries. It also explains why the Revo switches off so suddenly, as people have mentioned. The voltage of NiMH batteries is stable for a long period by drops quite steeply when they start to become depleted. When the 100% indication is no longer a full charge, the voltage drop-off point can correspond with (say) a 70%. indication. You'd expect the Revo to be able to play an alarm sound at 70%. But it's not able to do so as power consumption rises, voltage drops and the Revo switches off.
<< If you do a complete restore of a previous system and you WERE having problems with the charge level, this might re-install the problematic file (I tend to think it is probably "system.ini") >>
I don't think so as I regularly copy the contents of my Series 5mx's internal disk to the Revo, including system.ini. As the 5mx doesn't have rechargeable batteries it's system.ini won't have calibration data in it. The copying of system.ini would therefore make a mess of the Revo's calibration while I've never had battery problems. It's more likely that the calibration is in the form of a Revo specific file or a set of environment variables that are kept in memory.

Subject: RAM upgrades, machine count
RAM UPGRADE
I know D&G Upgrades do an "unofficial" out of warrantly upgrade process to the smaller Psions which were never really designed to be upgraded in this way i.e. they don't have slots or ports on the motherboard to allow this. I believe it's done by piggy backing another RAM chip onto the existing one and the O/S recognises this as extra memory? If I'm correct, then would it be technically possible to upgrade the RAM on a 9210 in the same manner, or is this totally out of the question? In my opinion, this sort of upgrade is welcome on a Revo or 5mx but essential on the 9210 where it's really needed! To me, having twice the RAM on the 9210 would make the world of difference and if it was possible to do, I'd seriously consider having it done.
MACHINE COUNT
I found the percentages of who reads the Digest in different countries very interesting. Perhaps we should also calculate the percentages of different EPOC machines too. I notice there appears to be very few 9210 owners here, so who is out there right now using one?
Regards
Kevin Thorne
