From: Darryl Kempster

Subject: P800 + fax

T-mobile have offered me a free handset cos threatened to defect to another network so considering the P800. Saw one in Finland the other day and looked good.

BUT...just received the following from SonyEricsson Data Support :-

""We have checked this and the P800 will not work as a fax modem, we have checked this and it does not seem to respond to the At string we used.

AT+FCLASS=?        ""

Someone on the list already has one so wondered if they could confirm this? These guys don't seem too sure themselves and I'd anyway need fax support over IR to use it in conjunction with the netBook. As I've moaned about in the past my R520 will only send using Fax Class 1 and won't receive over IR at all. (This is a handset restriction and requires the use of a cable) This despite returning a positive response to the "AT+FCLASS=?" string thus :-     0,1,2

So infer from this that there's more to fax capability than simply fax class support.

Anyone know why modern phone modems should struggle with fax over IR (Mike, Rolf)?

where older models never had this problem.

From previous digest discussions there have been various updates to Psion's messaging capabilities - the IrDA Update 1.00 for ER3, Cfor ER5.These seem to have been necessary to meet requirements of newer modems (R320, Psion InfraRedTravel modem) which exceeded original specs of the Psion. I can understand this in relation to new technologies such as GPRS which apparently requires use of long init strings

"I finally got GPRS running, and can state with certainty that the ROM 158 image DEFINITELY needs the 'Mobile Connectivity Update V2.0'."

But surely this should not affect 'older' technologies such as fax which the Psion was designed to be capable of handling.

From mine and other people's experiences would seem to be a general problem with the newer breed of handset.

Ericsson SH888. I can confirm fax send and receive over IR.

R320 was ok but needed Mobile Connectivity Update." (Incoming faxes are only a problem with some firmware versions, especially Orange branded phones)"

R520 send Fax Class 1 only and no IR receive. GPRS: WAP only, no data.

Nokia 6310i "every other line is compressed vertically....the end product is readable as distinct from perfect, and the imperfections do seem to crop up in every second line!"

"the resulting document is unreadable and only the first page is sent."

"By changing from IR to cable I managed to send a "readable" fax which almost finished the first page before failing!"

Motorola Timeport " Faxing isn't possible with the L7089 as it lacks the required hardware. A software based solution is only available for Microsoft Windows."

Siemens S25 "Set the "modem type" to "Fixed Line" in modems-advanced in control panel...as far as I know this will allow the S25/MX combination to send and receive faxs.

S35i - Sending faxes works, but with problems.

Fail to see the point in mobile operatore giving you a fax number when half the handsets won't support it! Data support teams usually try and blame it on the Psion

" (R520 does not support fax on Psion devices) Ericsson Data Support "

But surely Fax is Fax? The Psion supports Fax so a phone that supports the same fax class should work with a Psion - shouldn't it???

I currently have to use fax2email services such as YAC for fax reception but what about sending? I have no landline and work almost constantly on the road so need a mobile fax solution. Mobile phones seem more capable these days of taking pictures and playing games than being a phone! Sorry for long posting but this has really got under my skin. Ignorant of workings behind all this so if anyone can point me in direction of further info would like to arm myself with some questions to take to with manufacturers.

Another point with the P800. Again from the Digest :-

"The Revo (or any of the ER5 family of machines) cannot be used with a modem which doesn't support the command "AT+FCLASS=?". The modem doesn't need to support fax but it must respond to this command without giving ERROR, otherwise it will try three times and then time out without dialling."

Does this mean the psion and P800 are incompatible for communication purposes? Don't care how clever it is I still want a keyboard!

Dear Woody,

<< So I need ideas, examples how I can manage a normal, lots of balls in the air, multifaceted project >>

As your are "already behind the power curve on this" my advice would be to take a one week Project Management course. Cheops' managers and engineers didn't have Psions to assist them but still got the pyramid built. It's therefore not a question of how to use a Psion but how to do project management.

<< I don't have to keep track of money, just need to stay on top of lots of "stuff"  keeping track of the people I need to talk (email) to, things to do, steps in doing, all the input (emails) I receive, etc. >>

What you need to do when automatically follows from the way you set-up the project structure, the controls, milestones and feedback points, who has steering authority for which section, etc. When Group X needs to supply Component Y on date Z you plan a few checkpoints in your diary prior to the delivery.

How is Group X doing? - Where are they at that checkpoint? - Have they encountered difficulties? - What's still to be done before date X? - Do they foresee a later delivery? - Do they needs things from other groups? - Do they needs things from you? - Etc.

My experience is that the personalities of the people you work with are equally important. Know how the other person ticks and you know what you need to do in order to get the best out of him/her. When somebody needs to be regularly reminded of his/her deliverables and due dates you schedule a repeating "Nag Bob" to-do in your diary.

Subject: Re: Backup and restore

Dear Daniele,

<< How can I set up PsiWin to force a full backup rather than an incremental backup (I understand this is what it does every time when I connect the Mako) >>

The first backup you make will always be a full backup as there are no Mako files on the PC. Any backup made after the first will always be an incremental backup. There's no need to copy files to the PC that are already there and haven't changed. A lot of time is saved by leaving them alone and to restrict the backup to those files that have been changed and were newly created.

<< What exactly does the PsiWin option of number of file versions to archive actually do, if there is no way of selecting from which archive I wish to restore? >>

The archives are there so that you can go back to a previous state. Which state that is and which files it concerns is something Psion can't decide for you. You may want the whole Mako to be back as it was (say) three backups ago, for example. It's also possible that you'd like to revert to a version of a Word document because you don't like the changes you've made to it the past two weeks.

<< Which is the newest archive version, the one with the highest number or the lowest? >>

The higher the archive number the older the file(s).

Hi Jason,

this is not the full story.

Some email services do that spam prevention as follows:

you just have to identify yourself with your PW while popping mail first, then you can use the smtp (called "pop before send" or similar), no matter who is your ISP.

That is how I send some of my mails now. And I am still looking for some free and reliable email providers with this pop-before-send kind of identification. Who knows such providers?

BTW, the hint to use XLmail for SMTP identification was good, tx. However, I have several useful macros and addon programs for Mail app. Thats why I do not want to abandon this app on my MC218.

[Long detailed description of manually answering a digest mail - thanks for the insight.]

That looks like very much of typing. I am a lazy person, if it comes to alot of unnecessary typing, therefore I use the Digest Handler DH instead.

My simple process:

1) call DH, while a digest mail ist marked in inbox.

2) wait and relax during it analyses the digest

3) lets assume I want to read all mails: "enter" shows the first mail in its own window.

4) Space moves in the mail one page down, "B" one up. This is better than Fn+up/down, because one-fingered!

5)right moves one mail down, left one up (or a  toolbar click)

6) A toolbar penclick answers the actual mail with ReplyEveryMail (multi-language support - I write mails in Germna and english) or internal (not so good) and stores it with correct digest address, Cc to the individual (sender), > - signs and subject into the draft folder, waiting for my later amendments. DH goes back to after 5)

7) another penclick stores the actual mail in a preselected data file. Entry can be edited right away. Here I keep the most interesting info for my personal reference, which I want to have later. Much better than to search through the entire archive.

8) after 2) by typing "t" I get a overview of all digest subjects and can jump from here directly to the points of interest without having to read all the others.

9) Finally a keypress L (=loeschen, delete) deletes the digest after it is completely answered/read/stored and closes DH.

_For me_, I can think of no better way of dealing with digests. Itamars and Rolf B's. proceedings are well thought out, but way too much typing IMHO. I let DH and REM do all the cocopapa-ing work, thanks to Rolf Vonau's programs.

I have Organizer 97 and 5 (with XP). The PsiWin synch program only allows Organizer 2.1, 97 or 97 GS files.

So I can synch with 97 but I get loads of duplicated entries, and untimed entries/events get set to timed entries (at midnight) - ALL v. irritating.

I can't synch with Organizer 5 at all (it will load a 97 file but no way to save in this format).

What is Organizer 6 (thought I had latest version) and how do you synch ?

This is a perfectly OK solution, which I do use, however I setup the emulator to ensure I could access my files if & when my Psion dies, and as a result:

1. Having done so I found it convenient to have it on the same screen as my other work

2. It is much faster, esp. with large Agenda & Data files

3. The screen on my S5c is very hard to read when flicking back & forth from a brightly lit monitor (some of use are not so fortunate as to have an S7 <BG>)

Owen,

Belkin make a number of USB docking stations / hubs.  I have one of theirs which has 4 USB ports, a serial, a parallel, and two PS/2 ... although I haven't been able to use the PS/2s to connect my cordless keyboard and mouse for some reason, so have had to use up two of the USB ports to do this :-(

They do a number of different variations, including a modular hub, so you should be able to either find one "off the shelf" that will do what you want, or stick together the modules you need.  See www.belkin.co.uk for general information on all their products,

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=197&pcount=&Product_Id=66012&Section.Section_Path=%2FUSB%2FHubs%2F for a version with 4 x USB, 2 x serial and 1 x parallel - which sounds like

just what you want,

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=197&pcount=&Product_Id=66015&Section.Section_Path=%2FUSB%2FHubs%2F for details on my docking station, or

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=194

for modular hubs.

I bought mine in PCWorld in the UK, but they should be readily available

online too.  Belkin's site has a button to find a local reseller, or online

supplier.

One problem: the original distribution is mostly in source form, intended to be compiled on Linux. But everybody who will ask me can get a SIS copy of the most important files. (I've just put emxuser.sis, emxzip.sis and emxunzip.sis on my download page:

Saj,

>what's the advantages/disadvantages of using a 1GB IBM microdrive and a 1GB CF eXpansys? (aside from cost).

I think you'll find the main differences are likely to be in the areas of power consumption and performance although it's not necessarily clear cut which is better. It may depend on your usage patterns - for example read performance and write performance may be very different. There was a good review - now somewhat out of date but still useful - at http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/, that you may find useful although it doesn't directly answer your question.

As for noise, the Microdrive is a hard disk and if you listen closely you can hear it spinning and faint clicking sounds as the heads move. I use one in my digital camera and it's so faint I'm rarely even aware of it, so it's not something that's going to bother you.

There's been some debate on the digital photography forums about the reliability of Microdrives. My view, based on several years' experience with several of them and with a number of people I know who use them, is that they are very reliable. However - clearly - being mechanical, they need to be handled with reasonable care. The main things to avoid are sharp knocks when the disk is operating (it's very resistant to shocks when not in use) and squeezing - i..e pressing the two flat surfaces together, which will pretty obviously damage the bearings.

Hope that helps.

Alan Chambers

(Please not that although I am an IBM employee, my work is unrelated to the microdrive. I have no 'inside' information about it and so my knowledge of it is solely as a user. The opinions I've expressed here are totally my own personal views. )

Install web from your Netbook CD. (this has the changes such as colour

That's what most of us have been doing for years... :o)

EpocSync does this. It can synhcronize files and folders between two EPOC devices or between an EPOC device and the emulator. Beware that what it does is copy the most recently edited file to the other device, so if you make changes on both devices between synching, you'll loose the changes made on the one where the file was saved first. As long as you're aware of this, the only problem would be if you needed your wife/secretary/boss to be able to make changes to your agenda while you're away.

Personally, I just use the Mako and MC218 for everything and keep the data on the PC as a backup.

As others have stated, I simply carry enough fully charged NiMh cells. However, if I were to stay away from mains power (and the 12V ship's batteries on my yacht) for a long time, I'd consider buying one of those small sealed lead acid batteries that are used in alarm systems etc. That would be a lot neater than a battery pack with alkalines. I don't see any point in making a battery pack with four AA alcalines. They'll probably give better performance inside the Psion two at a time.

You'll find Lead Acid batteries at different capacaties and chargers to suit them in electronics stores like Maplins or Radio Shack as well as hobby shops that cater to remote control modellers. You could also make up a 6V pack from 5 NiMh or NiCad C cells as used amongst other places in electric remote control models. This would proably be lighter for the same capacity. Make sure you get cells that are suited to supplying a small amount of power over a long time. The cells used to drive the motor in a RC car are meant to give a lot of power over a very short time.

If you use lead acid batteries, keep in mind that they don't like being completely discharged. NiCads and NiMh's on the other hand SHOULD be completely discharged every now and then.

Batteries are inherently smooth, so the supply from any battery at the correct voltage should be just fine. However, you may get ripple coming through to the Psion if you connect it to the battery while the battery is also connected to a cheap unregulated charger.

Forget it!. The only way I'd even consider doing this is to make something that fits inside the battery bay in place of the two AA cells. You certainly should NOT have 3V connected to the innards of the machine while the AA cells are in place.

In my opinion, the best Remapper around is Alexander Zavorines Keyboard Remapper. You'll find it at:

http://www.zavorine.com/epoc

Norwegian and Danish Revo/Mako users may also find the ready made Norwegian keyboard configuration on the site useful. (Supplied by yours truly.)

This approach works well, but is a bit complicated and should probably not be attempted unless you have a fair bit of experience with computers.

I suspect the PCB that is replaced with the battery upgrade is the tiny one next to the battery. That's the charging circuit.

So, what does it do that Jotter doesn't do without the 255 char limitation?

Dear Itamar,

no offence, but I'm inclined to agree with Ulrich when he suggests that  it would be better if answers to the Digest were not "digests" responding to many postings. Maybe your way of answering is comfortable for you and simplifies the handling to some extent for the Digest team, but I think that the focus should be on the digest reader out there and the ease with which he can digest. I use Rolf V's fine sw DigHandler to read the Digest and to save postings. Doing this, I find that your way of answering complicates reading and finding postings I'm interested in. It also creates problems when I save postings and sort them under different headers (new sw, sw tips, repair, hw etc..) to be able to retrieve information in an easy way.

Cheers,

Jan G

I'm not sure I understand your particular situation, but I always record location information as a linked Psion Word object (Ctrl+Sh+z but don't use 'new line' or other formatting) om my Psion. This way the information is shown as a note in Outlook and as a description on my T39 mobile phone. Works fine both ways around when I synch.

Subject: CF Speed - ReFormat

Hello Digestees,

recently I got myself a new CF card with 128 MB (hama) as the old 32 MB one was becoming full. However, I found the new card to be very slow compared to the old one. I was almost tempted to go back to the old 32 MB card.

I went through the excellent CF information page on Pscience5. I think, problem is understood. The DiskBench benchmark utility reports an average write time of 10.3 s. This is on the slow end. Now I need to re-format the disk to a larger # of sectors/cluster.

The EDU is $50. This seems a bit high for a one time formatting.

Anyone knows how to optimize a CF card without EDU? I am still using Win98, but have access to ME and XP. Any other advice or new insights into the subject?

Greetings

Re.:  Leather  treatment - The question is really whether it is needed at  all  or  not,  weighing  it  against the risk of using oils and/or creams  and/or  wax  on  the  body of the S7. I suppose that as it has never  been mentioned no-one has as yet encountered a problem with the leather.

<<<<

I  own  a  netBook and sometimes (maybe two or three times per year) I use  my  wife's hand cream (if you need the type: it is Nivea), so the leather of the netBook is looking very good, and like new.

Moreover, it gives it the nice look with little shine :)))

So, you can try - I do not think that a normal cream (not some special oil) - will harm the leather used in netBook.

Hi Saj, If you want to buy yourself a 16Mb CF card (Expansys are selling them for £15+VAT) - assuming that you don't already have one - and post it to me; I'll put the OS onto it and post if back to you (free of charge of course).  Contact me off list if you're interested.

I use the backup program to copy the files to my hard drive, and then use the emulator to access these, following which I manually copy the altered files back to the Psion

My questions are:

1. Is there an easy way/program to ensure the PC/Psion always have the most recently updated files on them ?

2. I can't copy & paste from the emulator to windows - this is a HUGE disadvantage, any suggestions ?

<<<<

1. Check out EPOCSync (www.freepoc.org) if you don't know it already. Perhaps a slightly little-known fact but EPOCSync will sync with both the Emulator and an FTP server.  Just disable PsiWin before use and EPOCSync will treat your emulator just like another Psion!

2.  Not so easy.  If it's large quantities of text then cut and paste into a text file on the emulator - which you can then open on the PC.  If you want the functionality of CopyAnywhere then you're stuck AFAIK I'm afraid...
