Martin,

I would be interested in adding more colour to my S7.

As well as those you mentioned, Symlink, Navigator, SaveMail, Mentor, ...

I understand that there is more than one 'PC card' standard and that not all are supported by the psion. A compact flash adaptor always will work because it does not need drivers.

I had a smartmedia adapter that would not work with my S7 although I believe I heard of people having success with different brand adapters.

Greetings!

Sajid T. Jumaani wrote:

> does GlobeTrotter works on a netBook with os 158?

Probably not...

Their earlier Firstfone(somewhere in my collection) is the only GSM phonecard I know of that draws less than 750mA.

Some cards may draw less than that, but will report to the driver/os that they use more, if queried. (A function that is part of the PC-Card standard I believe) The netBook DO query, and will not acknowledge any card that reports drawing more than that.

the exception is of course a 'post-september' revision of the motherboard which allows for higher currents. (But since you originally had the 156 ROM, it's doubtful you have that)

I suggest emailing the nice people over at www.option.com and ask them.

They have a very friendly support department, and even sent me a new SIM-holder for the Firstfone free of charge even if it was years past any warranty.

(First class postage from Belgium must have cost more than the plastic piece was worth)

No, you don't want the firstfone even if you could get it cheaply, since it's a 9600 max speed.

I have also managed to use the Nokia Cardphone II, but only when placed in the PCMCIA-pod meant to be used with the S3c/S3mx/S5/S5mx machines, because the pod has its own batteries and don't query. (This pod will only take Serial type cards, so no Lan, Disks, ISDN or whatever)

The boss tends to scowl at me nowadays if I bring the netBook into the office, so I haven't been able to test the Nokia D211 card.

(There was an 'incident' where I demonstrated how quickly you could set up to log into the RAs server with the netBook, about two minutes, compared to giving up after an hour on his iPaq :-)

Have you set up the DNS server information?

And what about PROXY?

You may also need to list the Default Gateway.

(That's another name for router, if anyone wonders)

And of course, the Subnet Mask...

(I'll admit to getting that wrong on a machine I worked on once :-)

Subject: More on XJMail/ looking for email replacement

Hi Koi Hin,

--

...... Is there anyway to get the internal program to only download new mails (and skip the reading headers bit) or an alternative mail program that can do this?

--

If you configure XJMail to leave read mails on the server, I think it will ignore already downloaded mails the next time you log in, and only download any new mails.

---

Another related question, can we specify for mails to be downloaded without the attachments?

--

You can specify that only the first 5k (or whatever) of a mail be downloaded, which effectively downloads most mails without the attachment.

You can load Java from the CD that comes with the netBook/S7/S5MX - there are newsgroups and faqs as the installation has a few bits that don't quite work as they're supposed to, but most Java applications will run adequately, although you need to do a bit of tweaking first - see http://www.hasiland.com/javaonepoc/javac.html and http://www.davies.lu/java  for furt 158 - nFTP & NetStatRF

Can I ask what WLAN card you use in your netBook Mike (and anyone else FTM)?  I'd like to get one but Psion don't list tested ones on their site (despite saying that they do!) and haven't yet replied to my email on the subject...

I recently downloaded the latest version of plBeam and registered it to my Series 7.  Attempts to install the driver in the Control Panel repeatedly crashed the computer.  PsiNT (PSILoc) customer support, when contacted, revealed that "Driver mode is incompatible with the Series 7".  I asked whether they might therefore add my MC218 to the registration.  They did this at once.  Good policy, I'd say.

I had similar problems using v1.30 on my netBook (it used to work fine on my 5mx).  I've switched back to v1.00 on my netBook (needs a hard reset and a restore after uninstalling the app. to clear it out).  It's a slightly more basic version but then the bells and whistles in v1.2-1.3 justd UK £19.95 (16.98 exc.) Answer to: Philip Carlisle

Re.: Survey Results - Yes, in principle you could be right as of course I did not do a scientific statistical research. However, with about 1/3 of the subscribers having answered I think it does give a reasonable clear picture of the group of subscribers.

Answer to: Mike Woodward

Re. Todo App - Personally I find it easier to open multiple Jotter files for each To-do list (Work, Home, etc.) than to have to remember all these codes. Also, let's not forget the To-do list in the Agenda program, which has the advantage of popping up at a required date and continue to be shown in the Today view until you give it a new date, a great reminder system.

Answer to :  All

Re. Answering the digest - Having watched te digest for a few days I think about 1/4 of the answers are in multiple answers / message form and 3/4 single messages. I suppose we will all have to accept that different subscribers will use different systems and that none of us can please all of us.

Answer to : Keith Giles

Re. White letters - Well, on my 5MX's I used over the years the letters always faded within a month or two, but than I don't use rubbers on my fingers either .... <G>. By the way, if only the mice would use rubbers, my wife would be a lot happier <BG>.

Answer to: Martin Guthrie

Re. Colourising (/izing) icons - Careful, this is an "open door" you just kicked in <G>. You asked for it, so here is my list : Route, Phoneman, The dialer, Crontab, SaveMail, Stopwatch, Editor, Freenote, Nightkeys, Monopoly and Chadis7.   Alternatively explain us how you do it and we can all help, do some and send them to you for uploading.

Re.: Drawn a blank - Sorry to hear about your problem. I suppose the machine is under warranty for the repair just done by POS ?  You either do a soft reset but hold down both shift keys when switching it on, or just take out the batteries and back-up ones and leave them out for a couple of minutes. If it does not help, take it back to POS.

Subject: PGP for EPOC

Hi,

Kevin Thorne asked about PGP on EPOC devices.

At <http://www.zenobyte.com/pgp/index.html> there are two versions of PGP (2.6.3ia), one for ER5 and one for ER6. There is also an FAQ at <http://www.zenobyte.com/pgp/faq.html>.

Be warned, some later versions of PGP (not EPOC ones) are not secure - needless to say they are commercial. The EPOC ports (which are free) are not compromised.

Any encryption software where the source code is available is probably honest (not necessarily good though) but any where the source code is not available *may* be compromised in some way. It follows that the most trustworthy encryption software is probably free but always has the code available.

I'm not decrying commercial encryption but commercial secrecy means backdoors can be built in and we won't know.

As far as I know PGP is the only encryption tool on the Psion which is available on other platforms.

Happy days,

Phil.

Hi

Has anyone had the following problem:

When I try to create a new file in Word from

the file menu the program closes with an error message ("Reason= Code 1")

The only way I have found round  this is to just keep a Word document ready and delete the contents each time I want to create a new file.

I would prefer to fix the problem though!

Any ideas?

Subject: MC218: Ready to load software - not

I’ve come across an Ericsson MC218. When I start the machine it says

Ready to load software

Please insert a Memory disk or make serial connection

I have installed the Ericsson Connect software (similar to PsiWin) and thought that my PC and the MC218 happily would shake hands with each other and some kind of installation procedure would commence. But they will not connect. I have tried with a Psion 5mx on the same serial cable and checked that the connection is working - it is.

Can someone advice me on what to do? I guess I have to get my hands on some kind of system software for the MC218 - and presumably put it on a compact flash - to make it work.

Hi Everyone,

My current T68 with Orange ( in the UK) will soon be reaching the end of it's 1st year.

Are there any new handsets out there that people would recommend as an upgrade?I particularly DON'T wont a flip type phone, UNLESS anyone can point me in the right direction for a CHEAP Bluetooth handsfree kit ( and PC/CF card while I'm at it).

I'm also thinking of switching to GPRS for email - any thoughts?I remember the comments a month or so ago about the data exchanges when checking for messages - on a windows machine ( I know - I should wash my mouth out <G>) would Email Remover help reduce costs? For anyone who may be interested, Email Remover allows you to download your email headers via a web browser, then delete those you don't want before going to Outlook to actually download them -- saves having to download everything wanted or not!

All the best,
