Subject: re 7Book screen

Hi all,

I just got hold of my 7book today but looks like it will need to go straight back to seller and have spoken to him on phone today and he has agreed this.

However in the meantime as I was planning on sending it back next week, I had a look at the forum on psion place and my problem seems to be solved by

taking it apart.

Perhaps I should explain the problem, the screen has lots of lines down it when you turn it on, and sometimes no display at all, however after looking

at the forum if I press down near the label as suggested, the screen becomes perfect, however once I remove my fingers it goes wrong again.

I could just send it back but I do not want to wait ages, I guess I am a bit impatient to start with it, (to Julie, I cannot believe how much I prefer to the 5mx already, keyboard is a dream, and I love all the examples which I looked at whilst holding my fingers pressed down!)

So should I just send it back and then wait ages, or is it that easy to open it up, and adjust the screen cable, and if I do, will I need to earth myself or anything, and although I have looked at the links give, as I have never opened anything up before, I will need step by step instructions, with

nothing taken for granted.

So I admit I would rather try and fix it myself than send it back, but what advice can anyone give me?  Many thanks sorry if long winded approach to problem.

Subject: Re: Peeling Skin

The peeling skin problem, was quite apparent on my first S5c, which I used to use 'handheld' much of the time - the peeling started in the places I held the machine. It would sit balanced, with my fingers supporting it underneath and my thumb curled over the left edge of the screen surround, and these were the areas the peeling began - in the end, with the machine looking pretty ragged, I just finished the job and peeled the rest off (in idle moments) and it looked fine.

My current S5c, acquired 2nd-hand, has mainly been used on a desk and has hardly peeled at all.

Jason

Re.: Answering the digest - Let's just agree in this matter that no-one will be able to satisfy everybody and that we will all continue to answer and enjoy this digest the way it is. Thank God we are all different, otherwise we would all want the same husband or wife <G>.

Answer to: vlad arghir

Re. S5tv - I looked it up at the Tucows website as I remembered it was only for specific models (and a beta issue). It should work for Sony, JVC, VCR, Panansonic DVD and Onkyo receiver.

Answer to : Owen H. Morgan

Re. peeling skin - Your theory could be right, but it is mostly hypothetical by now. My S5 peeled all over the machine, even at places I didn't touch it at all like the corners. At the time Psion agreed (AFAIR) that it was due to faulty paint (yet another mistake by them).

Answer to: David Lir

Re. Police cameras - Why am I mapping them ?  Well, I use my 5MX with a Garmin eTrex GPS in my car on long journeys or when driving to unknown addresses in London and it will show me where these cameras are while driving. I don't like to be fined and we all from time to time drive too fast, sometimes without noting it. It actually keeps me on my toes what the speed limit is and IMHO works positive to avoid speeding.

<<Mike, has the fax sending corruption problem been solved on the 6310?>>

I haven't solved the problem. I was going to try sending a fax from my laptop by installing the Win XP fax application. However, before I could try it, I found that it caused Win XP to hang while shutting down - probably due to the modem being disconnected, but I can't connect the 6310i everytime I want to shut down the laptop. I had to uninstall it again but I still want to do some testing to see whether the Psion or the phone is the problem.

Subject: some Info for Mac users

Maybe someone can add to this (OS X connected info, fi; etc.) and maybe s-o can put this somewhere on a page so that all Mac-users can access it. ----

Have a look here for Mac tips:

http://www.simonwilliams.com/html/psion5macothertips.html

http://www.simonwilliams.com/html/psion5maclinking.html

- Data exchange over serial lead (or USB-to-serialconverter):

Macconnect (comes w. sw & cable). Discontinued. It can install, backup, compress memory. Slow. Cannot convert. The latest version works w. OS 9.-

Philippe Galmel's Trafic (you need to find your own cable). Can do some conversions. Haven't tried it lately:

http://www.g4gravure.com

or

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/philippe.galmel/perso/

- With a CF/reader (USB is ok):

Backups on the Mac via CF do NOT work well. If you copy Psion system-data from the CF to the Mac, the CF often gets corrupted and needs reformating, the Finder might hang. Non-system data are okay. I use CF cards to transfer/install .sys, and to store backups (NOT on the Mac).

- Formating CF cards:

If you have to reformat a CF card it can be done on both platforms (on the Mac: dos-format, of course).

NB: several attempts (on any or both platforms) might be necessary if the card had been corrupted (it ALWAYS works in the end - NEVER seen a dead CF). NB: the Mac Finder writes some visible and invisible folders and docs on your CF. (Finder Database, finder.frk etc.): do NOT touch them, or you'll have to reformat the card.

- Current conversions:

Some of these are shareware, the first three are freeware, I think:

To transfer contacts-data between the Databank, Contacts and various Contact-Managers that can export tab-delimited text:

Contacts to a (tab delimited) text file: c2f

Text (tab-delimited) to contacts: DataContact

Convert text-files from Mac to Psion and back: Mac2Five2Mac

Trafic can do some conversions

If you have Virtual PC it works very well with the Windows-Psion Software. (Haven't use these last two, though, because the CF-reader solution has proved stable enough for me so far)

nConvert for more complex jobs (no experience with it).

Hope this helps,

To Owen: It is definitely not a broken screen cable as the liquid crystals are evident, moreover cracks starting approx. 2 cm from the top right corner of the screen are visible.

Is it possible to exchange ***only*** one layer of the display?

There are several other interesting clearances going on, especially for

those interested in ultra-cheap netBooks and netBook connectivity:

(1) Sita Multimedia Sdn. Bhd. are now taking online orders by credit card

for their Malaysian netBooks.  US$258 plus US$34 shipping to the USA, UK,

or Canada.  (Not tax or customs duty for shipments to the USA; Uk buyers

may have to pay duty.)  See my page on the Malaysian netBooks at:

http://hasbrouck.org/netbook

There's also a lot of info about the MalayBooks in the netBook forum at

PsionPlace.com.

(2) Sita also have Cisco Aironet 342 Wi-Fi cards that they say work with

the netBook (confirmed by other posters, who also say they don't block the

stylus hole like some cards, although I haven't tried them) for US$45.

It's a great price; IMHO the killer app for the netBook is Wi-Fi support.

(3) Expansys.com (UK) and Expansys.us(USA) have lots of clearance Psion

wired Ethernet cards (the only wired ethernet cards likely to work with

the netBook) for under US$30 / GBP20 plus taxes and shipping.

Steve,  This rings a bell with me also.  I recently had to do a hard reset on my netBook after backing up C Drive to D drive with Ralph Sprenger's Backup program.  After reinstalling all the programs from D to C I found that Font Machine no longer worked. The icon was still on the Control Panel but trying to install *.ttf fonts gave an error message; I think "May not be a Font file" or something similar.  I had to reinstall Font Machine to get it to work.  An email to mBrain seems a good idea.

This rang a very vague bell at the back of my mind but it hasn't got

any louder yet unfortunately.  A couple of things to try.

Have you emailed mBarinSoftware for support?  My experience is that

it's pretty quick responding and generally accurate.  The second thing

is, have you soft reset the machine then run a backup?  This might be

worth a try.

Subject: That old screen cleaning problem

One of the subjects that comes up from time to time on most Psion

forums is the subject of the screen cleaning.

I have finally found a solution that I feel may be worth a

recommendation (please forgive the appalling pun).  In the past I have

always just wiped the screen on my Psions and once they get really

greasy, cleaned them with Isopropanal (aka IPA).  Lately I read that

alcohol-based cleaning fluids may lead to some plastics yellowing over

time so decided to look for alternatives.  iKlear is recommended for

use on Mac flat screen displays among others and has (apparently) only

become available in the UK recently.

I bought a starter kit from http:www.shop21.uk.com and have been really

pleased with the results on my netBook so far.  The kit contains a

bottle of spray, two types of wipes and lint free cloths.  The most

vital component there would appear to be the spray if you already have

suitable cloths available and I feel that a bottle will last a LONG

time.  The wipes are a handy size but probably not great value for

money if bought alone.  My recommendation would therefore be the spray

(KS8 - £9.95 ex VAT) and maybe some cloths if necessary.

Cheers,

Steve Hodgson

All the usual caveats apply - I'm in now way connected with Apple

I now have 3 Macro type programs on my 5MX ... and I'm getting an error "D:\system\opx\macro5.opx   Incompatable OPX version" when I try to run any of these programs. I'm guessing I loaded or kept an old version of some OPX file. Currently I have loaded, Macro5 (v2.4), ExAb (standalone version) and RunMacro. thought I had Assistant but either didn't load or removed. 1. How do I fix the OPX? 2. where do I find a good list of current OPX type files and how do I know what ver I currently have- they seem to have the date I installed.

3. Tried Macro5 years ago, but was wondering if RunMacro or ExAb or even Assist might be better, easier? Is there a winner, or problems with conflicts with other programs, or is it just pick one, learn it and that's it?

I need to use the ExAb function in my project work, so was trying to decide if I should use the macro or the standalone version and then run other macros from it. All suggestions welcome.

Simon,

This is probably a little off-topic so I'll keep it brief...

Shell scripts can be used to automate tasks that are performed using

the command line in unix - this was the usage that I was referring to.

I generally use them similarly to Windows batch files (but they are

much more powerful IME), as a way to automate common tasks and simplify

them.  One simple example is removing all the output files from

compiled software, so the developer types (say) "tidy" in place of "rm

*.err, *.sgl, *.obj" etc etc.  In this case the file simply consists of

the command line but without the need to remember the rest.  I've also

used shell scripts to perform more comprehensive (and interactive)

tasks such as extracting all the interesting stuff from output files

and sticking it into a test report automatically.

I'm not a real expert though, just playing around at the bottom of the

programming food chain!

Cheers,

Steve Hodgson

P.S. On a semi-related unix matter, anyone here got any experience of

using Reflection X on Windows NT, in partcular do you need any software

installed on the server-side.  Email me off-digest.

My Mac-Psion needs would be fairly basic.  It would be nice to have a

capabilities to perform backups but in general I use my NT work PC for

that as it keeps the netBook and its backup in different locations.

It's always useful to have the capability though.  I don't think I

would ever need any file conversion capabilities in order to work on

files on the Mac.  In general I use the awesome PDFPrinter on the

netBook to make files viewable elsewhere and shareable and this is all

I need in that area.

It is essential to be able to download SIS files and install them but I

hope that can be handled by sticking them on the CF card by USB or

Firewire.

The is the level of interfacing I have on BeOS and I almost never need

to fire up Windows and PsiWin to do any more than that.

I've tried PDF+ (the trial available on the web page, after adjusting the machine's date). Most of the time it does a good job, but some characters are still not displayed, even for pdf files with all fonts embedded. A mathematical formula that _may_ be imcomplete is not a good thing.

The add-on PCB does indeed contain the new battery software, and for $90 US they put a new battery into the unit as well as the PCB.  He points out that the parts are provided by Psion and that Psion-USA will do the same upgrade for $140.

It was refreshing talking to an intelligent friendly human being rather than dealing with an automated RMA process.  He tells me that they maintain all of the Psion products so I will probably be sending my Psions to Canada as they break.

The only glitch is you need to talk with them prior to sending the units to make sure the declarations wordage is appropriate (no lies, just careful wording to meet Canada's bureaucratic requirements).

I should wait to se how Keith makes out in his adventure with Toronto, but patience has never been my strong suit.

This was a very good idea - converting the Word file to HTML does make it possible for the first time to view the document, complete with charts and tables, on the S7. Unfortunately I need to overwrite the text in the document (from one language to another) and then save it back to the original Word format. When I save the HTML file as a Word Doc, the charts and tables are all in GIF format rather than in their original form.

But this conversion process is definitely a step in the right direction!

Thanks,

Peter

Subject: Downloading Files Via Opera

Recently I have noted that if I choose to donwload certain files off the internet with the version of Opera that came bundled with OS 158 in my netbook, the browser brings up a box in which it asks whether I want to cancel the donwload or open the file with the associated application (it usually happens with pdf files). However, the file may be downloaded (to a destination that I have yet been unable to locate), but is never opened by the software. Opening PDF+ prior to download, does not do the trick either. I have explored different menus in Opera to no avail. Anybody has experienced the same problem?

Thanks and best regards,

Manuel Cam

Subject: Unknown file extension

I recently received an email attachment which I cannot open on my S7.  It has the extension .pps.  What type of file is this and is there any way I can view it without recourse to a PC?

I have now finished three files, one for the UK, one for Germany and one for Belgium/Netherlands. Let me know if anyone is interested. I'll try and find a website "home" for them.
