Seen in Walk - Living Streets:
Hit by a car at 40 mph, nine out of ten pedestrians will be killed.
Hit by a car at 30 mph, about half the pedestrians will be killed.
Hit by a car at 20 mph, nine out of ten pedestrians will survive.
In UK in 2001:
3,443 people were killed
37094 were seriously injured
272509 were slightly injured.
These are the statistics which justify hidden police cameras. I'd hate to think Psions were being used to limit the effectiveness of the cameras.

I'm assuming that all the previous cable repairs were done using the usual Psion supplied flat-cable. SRS in Germany (http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html) can repair your machine with a 3rd-party cable that they claim should last much longer than the original cable because it simply doesn't have the little holes that are said to be the chief cause of all or most of the problems. SRS will also sell you the cable alone, without the repair, if you want. If I were in your shoes I would have SRS repair the machine with the 3rd-party cable before I would give up on the Psion; but I can certainly understand if you've had *enough*!

Is it possible you downloaded the emulator version of Macro instead
of the epoc version? It would have the wins version of the opx. I
know I made that mistake the first time I downloaded Macro5.
Kevin Thorne asks what is file extension .pps. It's Microsoft's PowerPoint. don't know if you can view it without a PC. BTW, you can check file extensions at http://filext.com/

Subject: Wired Ethernet cards
Thanks to those who've given advice about which cards work with the netBook.
That I'm no further forward in getting the right card is due partly my ignorance, and partly to my having received no reply from Teklogix.
So, following the recent postings about what Expansys have to offer in the way of cards for wired ethernet access, can anyone tell me which - if any - of the Expansys offerings will allow me to connect my netBook directly to the LAN cable in the teachers' residence where I live in Taiwan?
By the way, the postage to Asia on a card from Expansys is more than the cost of the card, since they only use FedEx for deliveries to this region: I'll have to try the US website to see if normal airmail is available!

Is that a S7 or a netBook?
It's not that difficult....
1. Back it up...
2. Remove all the batteries. Also remove the stylus if it's in the slot.
3. Remove the slot covers underneath the screen.
4. Remove the RAM/ROM module under those covers.
5. Pull out the pins holding the hinges together, letting the screen tilt backwards.
6. Gently peel up the lefthand edge of the netBook label to expose a screw.
7. Remove the screw and lift out the plastic frame to expose the screen cable.
8 The screen cable should be held in place with two small screws and a piece of white plastic...
Reassembly is the reverse of these instructions, but the hinge pins can be a bit fiddly to get into place.
You will also need to have the OS.IMG file handy on a CF if it's a netBook.

I got my PocketReader this week, and so far the only software I've found is the crap on www.pocketreader.com
(It breaks ALL the design guidelines concering .app's)

The files can be found in C:\System\Apps\Opera\Cache
Unfortunately the are always renamed into oprxxxx.pdf
But remember to copy them before you close the browser so that they won't be deleted...

I believe that is an M$ PowerPoint file. or 'slideshow' to be more accurate.
Didn't Psion once sell a package that allowed you to work with them and display them via a PCMCIA VGA card?

Subject: Macro Programs - what to use?
I now have 3 Macro type programs on my 5MX ... and I'm getting an error "D:\system\opx\macro5.opx Incompatable OPX version" when I try to run any of these programs. I'm guessing I loaded or kept an old version of some OPX file. Currently I have loaded, Macro5 (v2.4), ExAb (standalone version) and RunMacro. thought I had Assistant but either didn't load or removed. 1. How do I fix the OPX? 2. where do I find a good list of current OPX type files and how do I know what ver I currently have- they seem to have the date I installed.
3. Tried Macro5 years ago, but was wondering if RunMacro or ExAb or even Assist might be better, easier? Is there a winner, or problems with conflicts with other programs, or is it just pick one, learn it and that's it?
I need to use the ExAb function in my project work, so was trying to decide if I should use the macro or the standalone version and then run other macros from it. All suggestions welcome.
WoodyB<<
Hi Woody,
Not that I'm saying that the problem is caused by ExAb, but it is the fastest way to get a working version of Macro5.opx back on your machine. First close all macro apps (Macro5 itself, Assistant and ExAb and possibly Merlin and Backlight+ if you have those as well), and then uninstall ExAb. Next, download the latest version from my website (ExAb v.7.13, release 201202) and install again. If that doesn't work contact me through my website to see if I can help you further.
Macro5 and Assistant have their own functionalities, but if you need the ExAb function anyhow, you'll find it perfectly suitable to run other macros as well (and a lot more than that too ;-).

To Kevin Thorne: .pps is - in my world - a Powerpoint presentation (picture show). I don't know if you would be able to open it on your S7 with Psion Presentation Maker installed. Otherwise it's like Mike Woodward wrote; "try loading your Word & Powerpoint files in the relevant Microsoft application and use the save as option to save them as web pages".

Nic,
Steve Godfrey (Zenobyte) has indeed written a patch for Monopoly to make it use the full screen on a 7/netBook and to fix a couple of other problems. Unfortunately he is legally not allowed to release it and I don't think that it has ever escaped into the wild. If I am wrong about this and someone does have a copy then please do feel free to email it to me!

Ahhh... I'd noticed that the EBook file recogniser was doing something funny on my machine but hadn't actually linked it to the replacement aif file. Have now though! Can't see any immediately obvious reason why it's doing this but the short-term fix (if it's something that bothers you) is just to re-install EBook over your exisiting install. It'll revert to b/w icons but you'll get the reconiser back. Leave it with me and I'll see if I can figure something out.

My understanding was it can be setup to work for anything - provided one understands the IR parameters of a remote-control... I have a Telefunken.

Probably not, sorry to say so. I guess I know what you mean, but you should bear in mind that the best part of what you're paying for goes for the manual labour, not the hardware - this is the Affluent Society ;-)
Are you a Vlad or Vladimir? :-)

I can offer you my collection of OPXs (ca 1.5 MB) - email me offline if you
want it (but you probably just need to reinstall the software, any duplicates/older versions will be removed/replaced).
Look for opxScan at
http://www.psionwelt.de/ralphsprenger/.
This freeware will tell you which program uses which opx or which opx is
useless and can be deleted (unless it's part of a software on a CF card not presently in D). You'll also find Backup there (shareware).

I think I was unclear. Once the system has downloaded onto C from the compact flash, why is it that the Install programme for other programmes doesn't work but requires the presence of the flashcard?
Another question: is there any advantage in putting programmes on the flashcard rather than on the C drive?

It's probably a "PowerPoint show": a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that will run automatically when it's opened. If you have software on your Psion that will open PowerPoint files, making a copy with the extension .ppt might work, although I'm just guessing.

Subject: More colour icons + SimCity colour...
Hello all,
I've added: DCP (not great but really need original artwork to do it properly), Hermes, Mentor, PhoneMan, psiMind (+ patch) - not done by me, SaveMail, and Vexed to the collection.
Hence it now contains: BusyView, Collins EF, Crypto, DCP, EBook, EnRoute (aka Route), FileSwitch, FrotzS5, Hermes, Macro5, Mentor, PhoneMan, Phrase, Porfolio, psiMind (+ patch), RMRZip (+ patch), SaveMail, SysBack, and Vexed - as icons that can be used to replace the standard b/w ones on your toolbar. Instructions included in the file.
Download at: http:\\www.pscience5.net\freeware\colour_icons.zip
I've also uploaded a complete SimCity upgrade. It's a big zip file (403Kb) so I've kept it separate from the rest. Blurb from its ReadMe.txt as follows:-
"This is really a collection of updates. The first is Atelier's own free upgrade from v1.0 to v1.1 for SimCity (SimCity1.1Upgrade.zip) and allows the programs to run on revo's and Osaris's (Osari?). It's also a prerequisite for the colour upgrade. Simcityc.zip contains the colour upgrade as created by 'Gaz & Chris' - I take no credit for it whatsoever. It upgrades the whole program with colour tilesets that look quite superb on the Series 7 / netBook. Last but not least (well, maybe...) is my own contribution - a colour aif file to replace the standard one which - for some reason - 'Gaz & Chris' haven't done in their version."
