Re.: Data counter for GPRS - Your phone should show that. On my Nokia 6310i I have under call register "GPRS connection time" and "GPRS data counter" giving both the details for the last contact as well as the totals.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. eTrex & S7 - I have the same combination and the S7 screen is of course far superior above the 5MX. However, how do you secure your S7 in the car while driving ? My 5MX sits in the car holder attached to the ventilation outlet right next to my steering wheel and I can quickly glance at it while driving.
Answer to: Toby
Re. speed cameras - You wrote you don't agree with "arbitrary speed limit breaking". I never said I do ! I said that showing the camera positions on my Psion will enhance my keeping to the law. It is an extra warning not to speed. But than, I see the camera as a tool to slow down the traffic and stop speeding, not as a tool to get higher revenue (see the message of Rolf).

> Re.: Emails on D - However I seem to remember that if you keep a lot of emails in your mailbox using the D disk will severly slow down the program. <
Hi Itamar,
You're so right, but that's another issue. Renee will have to choose between the risk of loosing his emails if he keep them on drive C or an increasing slowdown in performance if he keep them on drive D, but the latter solution will at least keep the emails safe.
BTW, speaking of problems, I think Renee have two problems. The backup battery looses its connection from time to time and the PSU doesn't power the unit properly when changing batteries (and probably on several other occasions). Cleaning the backup battery compartment and replacing the backup battery may improve the connection. The PSU issue is far more complicated. Thing is that the male pin connector to the PSU is partially broken inside the machine and need to be resoldered. This leads to times where the Psion doesn't get powered although the PSU is connected. Even tape can't improve or fix that. Only a repair either by a specialist or yourself.

Dear All
Please ignore my last posting on EPOC Emulator.
Did some work, and found answers at www.gareth-and-jane-saunders.co.uk.
If someone has answered since Digest 186 (latest I've had) in the mean time, my thanks and apologies.

<<3. Apart from crashes, watering and other misuse, almost every hardware problem reported by 5mx users on the electronic forums is about the screen cable.>>
I think I see a silver lining in the dark cloud of Psion's withdrawal from servicing the 5mx December 31st, 2004.
Palmtop Support Services in Toronto has assured me that as long as they can acquire parts, they will continue to repair the Psion line.
I hear that an outfit in Germany is already providing an improved version of the cable. It stands to reason (always a dangerous thing) that the major cause of 5mx failures will be addressable long after Psion stops repairing the units.
By the way, number me in a category of those who have experienced cable failures who also do not worry daily about cable failures. All things are subject to entropy and the value I receive from my Psions far outweighs their mortality.

Hi folks.

Vlad, I saw such an app reviewed in Palmtop User, but unfortunately it was for another platform. AFAIK there isn't any as yet for ER5. However, do you not have such a monitor in your phone? The Nokia 6310i certainly has...
Re Monopoly:
...and, quoting Steve Litchfield (> ):

Absolutely! So let's hope that Psion sees it this way, and allows the patch to be released.

Even if you don't use the encrytion features (assuming this was what
you were referring to) it's potentially useful to be able to sign more
formal emails.

There's also a <cough> rather excellent TomeRaider database of 1802
file extensions available at Memoware (http://www.memoware.com/?screen=
doc_detail&doc_id=1949&p=format^!TomeRaider~!date_added^!0~!rating^

couldn't see anyway to shorten it
If anyone has other sources they would like to merge in just send me an
email. I looked at http://filext.com/ but there seemed too many
restrictions with the reuse of the flat text download download.
At the risk of over-aggressive self promotion I'd also recommend the
Jargon File from Memoware :)

1-I made myself a nullmodem adaptor/genderbender instead of a cable. You can buy the little thingy boxes for little money in any electronics supplier. I am not a gifted solderer, but I got it. I might even have the wiring scheme somewhere.
2- Cable suppliers:
http://www.psionleads.freeserve.co.uk/
http://home.t-online.de/home/audiovisual/specials.htm (in German, but they'll read English, I suppose).
http://www.fingertech.co.uk/psionhardware.html (on this site you will also find some settings for various phones and the Travelmodem). Email them for questions on things not listed. They also SELL some Psions!
Emulator: they are offering a solution here-

They put one up at an intersection in Tønsberg in SE Norway where I used to drive a taxi. The camera caused so many accidents they had to remove it. People would drive up to the intersection while the light was green, then if it changed to yellow when they were really beyond the point of no return they would slam their brakes on to avoid being photographed running a red light. The result was a lot of cars were being tailended.
The main problem with roads and traffic rules is that the people who make them don't take human nature into account.
Cables:
> I wonder if junk accumulating in that slot might not
> be one of the causes of
> some of the ribbon cable failures we've seen?
I think the main reason is simply that it is being bent and unbent every time the machine is opened or closed and the design isn't up to it.
I bought a second hand MX today for 200 Euro. It looks brand new, so hopefully it'll last a while. Unlike some people, I can't really afford to replace the machine on a yearly basis so I do worry about the cable. I was offered a MC218 at a very good price from a friend, but declined because of the problems getting them repaired.
And no, there is not a humid or saline atmosphere inside my boat and I have lots of electronics, but no failures that can be related to humidity (except for an autopilot, but that was outside and it failed in a storm after a direct hit by buckets of salt water). Relative humidity inside varies from the low end of normal to too dry. Normal in summer and when I use electric heating, too dry when I use the oil furnace in winter. In fact, I always keep a kettle of water on top of the oil furnace when it's on to keep the humidity at a livable level.

The NetStatRF program first appeared in a Beta of the 158 ROM Image for the netBook, then was lacking from the first 'Final' of the ROM, before it reappeared in the re-released version...
I don't think it was ever released as a stand-alone program.
If the machine can load the latest ROM, it will be able to run the program...
It seems it only supports Lucent WaveLan and Orinoco type cards, though.
(That's what it says in the About box )

Here my data string is:AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"
The "Internet" text may be different from network to network...

My Dialup number is *99***1#
The '1' that crops up in those two strings are to select GPRS profile on the phone. (You can have more than one profile, for WAP, EMAIL and so on, if the phone supports it)
Some phones works without the number, others don't.

Now, since everyone mentions speed-cameras...
I work in the 'Public Roads Authority' in Norway...
Since we, not the police, maintain these cameras here I've sometimes managed to get a few bits of inside information...
We have traffic counters along the roads to monitor traffic density and patterns(Without cameras), so can watch how the pattern changes...
In my county, just before they started mounting the cameras, som joker placed an old washing machine next to a road. The counters showed a marked decrease in the average speed...
The cameras can be used for more than just speed...
Several times they've been used to check if the drivers use seat-belts.
(Yes, you can see not only the seat-belt, but also the driver's face...)
Recently we've been setting up digital cameras instead of the oldfashioned film types. (With ISDN or GSM lines to transmit the pictures immediately)
This is because some road-kings cut down the camera if they think they've been caught...
(One that was recovered actually had pictures of the perps approaching the camera with cutting tools)
The digital cameras gave the technicians an idea....
They wanted to use it to measure averages, not just 'spot checking', but it was turned down because of privacy issues.
(The cameras contain a very accurate clock)
And just to make it more interesting, the last time I checked, Radar warning devices are illegal here in Norway.
(Not that they're much good, anyway, with the topography here)
:-)
Trygve
BTW: No, I don't know which of the boxes are empty and which contains a camera...

Subject: Opening a pdf attachment
Hi all,
Perhaps one of you could solve a small puzzle for me. The other day I received an email message with an attachment. I could not open it on my 5MX even though it indicates that it's a pdf attachment, while I have a registered pdf+ program installed on my unit. Is there something I am missing, or am I doing something wrong? I will greatly appreciate any help.

John,
<<It is an old chestnut that the 5mx keys aren't so good as on the 5ive. What is the latest thinking on the good way to deal with this? >>
The old chesnut is true (IMO). I had to move to my classic for a month while my 5mx went into the shop and my Makos were acting up. I was reminded immediately how much better the classic keys are (butter smooth).
The stickiness of the 5mx keys does go away with use. Mine is now very good, but not as good as the classic. It was a PITA when we first bought our 5mx's (my wife and I).
I'm sure that modifying or changing the keyboard is major surgery and not to be attempted lightly (IMO).

Dear Itamar,
<< Scientifically you are probably right, although any research is done in general on a fraction of the total users in a market. In general this is done to represent the total group, but in the end one cannot be sure and therefore calculate the mistake factor >>
Note that a sample is carefully selected regarding size and composition to be representative of the population as a whole. Researchers also send out an excess number of questionnaires because they know from experience that a certain percentage of people won't fill it in. The questionnaire therefore includes a number of 'reference' questions to check that the people who do respond give the researcher a sample of the size and composition that's needed. It's these measures that allow researchers to say that "The population thinks X".
<< I don't make any "claims", but only say that even if we are all diehard S5(MX) users with many machines in the cupboards, a failing rate of well over 50% amongst diehard users is still far too much >>
Your "but only say" is a claim already. And, given the way you've conducted your research, you're not able to say whether we're really dealing with a "failing rate of well over 50% amongst diehard users".
