Subject: Data counter for GPRS

Hello everybody,

I wonder if there is any kind of GPRS monitor app that would tell me the amount

of sent/received data when I am connected to the internet via GPRS.>>>>

I have used a nokia 6610 and 6100 and they both have GPRS counters on them that if you connect and then sellect the counters you can watch the figures very acuratly as you are surfing.  Sad as I am it makes quite interesting watch, and I am always surprised at the extra bites of send and receive when downloading an email of a known size or receiveing headers when accessing email via the psion

Saj,

Inevitably Tottenham Court Road is your best bet, it is crammed with electronic shops and you can always negotiate a good price, especially if you spend a while looking in all the shops for comparison.

However, if you want reliable after sales service then John Lewis' computer department, near Oxford Circus, is a very safe bet, albeit slightly dearer than most. They are very attentive.

At the bottom of Gower St, near Tottenham Court Road tube (BTW this tube station is currently closed on the Central Line only, due to the recent train derailment), is a computer resellers. can't remember the name,

but they have a vast array of 2nd hand equipment, and they may offer something like a 6 month warranty. HTH.

Dear All,

My Nokia 7110e (Orange) has just lost one of its battery contacts,

the sliding 'flip' sticks, and the aerial is a wee bit bust; thus it

is overdue for renewal. Any recommendations? Its main use (apart from the obvious) is to manage Contacts and PhoneMan on my 5mx, so a compatible IR port is a must; I'm not that bothered about camera and MMSs, though would consider Bluetooth compatiblity esp as there's a new 5mx being rumoured; so would like to stay with the Psion. So any hands-on recommendations with the currently available Orange handsets would be welcome. Thanks.

Just out of interest, EPOC digest has talked about the new SonyEricsson P800. I have looked at the spec and it is an impressive piece of kit.

As it runs Symbian v7.0, does this allow any 'better' connectivity and software compatibility with the 5mx/EPOC 5. Especially with regards to syncing with Agenda.

Also, as this phone is not yet released by Orange, what problems or limitations using an Orange SIM card with the handset?

Merci beaucoup.

I've recently acquired a UK Orange Sagem MyG-5 phone, complete with GPRS capacity and an IRDA port. But the instructions don't tell me how to use the IRDA port, or even how to turn it on and off, and Orange seems to assume that all I'll ever want to do with it is look at WAP sites, which I regard as less than stimulating. There's no mention of connecting a computer to the phone, and no cables came in the box. But I got it for fifty quid, having inadvertently presented my Siemens C25 to the airport cleaning staff at Auckland New Zealand.

Any suggestions, anyone?

The problem is that if you have the German version of the OS, which I do and which matches the keyboard configuration of my netBook, this utility isn't included at all. And that's annoying. Solutions, anyone?

Do Tottenham Court Road - but you won't find any new Psions.

Question:

Does software for the Nokia Communicator work on Psions? If not, is there some way of making it work? I am interested in the Oxford Dictionary.

Subject: File' not found'

Hi,

Can anyone help me with this? E-Mail messed up on my S7 so I eventually worked up to a hard reset and format and restore of C it all now works but when I switch on again I get a 'not found' message which I cancel and look in 'running progs dialogue' and select the prog I was looking at last and all is well. The machine finds a serious fault with Checkdisc (Fat redirection table?)but I have the mem upgrade and I think that is normal with the S7? Again checkdisc can't find the CF.

Could this be because I back-up c only and have not done a backup of d cos of the time it takes and this machine seems to drop the connection before it finishes.

Re PiBeam does version 1.00 work with the S7 as 1.10 causes problems. It was so long since I reset (nearly a year)I had to get the book out! Cheers Jon Welford

Hi Psion Users,

Data counter for GPRS:

Sure my phone (Ericsson R520) has got such a counter, but I'm looking for an app for my Psion which would provide me with "live" information, as when connected via infra, it's quite difficult to acccess the appropriate menu on the phone, and moreover my phone does not show a live connection, only last finished session and totals.

It happenned to me several times, my fault each time, that I ended up having downloaded more than 2 MB of totally unuseful data (BTW total cost of aprrox € 2), which I believe could have been prevented if I had had such an app - simply I would have quitted the session in time.

Screen cable failure:

I switched from a Revo+ to a brand new 5mx not long ago, about a month or so. Having heard about the screen cable failure problem I was determined to open/close my machine only when REALLY needed. Well, so it happened - I saved my cable but ended up with a broken screen. Instead of a € 50 worth of repair I will have to pay more than € 200. Nice, isn't it? SAVE YOUR CABLES, IT IS DEFITELY WORTH THE MONEY!!!

Have a nice day

Siemens S55 is a winner, lovely feel and build quality has all you need.  Only down side is the extended phonebook feature of Phoneman does not work with it *Yet* - only reason I opted for nokia 6100 instead of the siemens was its fuctionality with phoneman app, I don't use blue tooth.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh the can of worms is opening yet again.  I am feeling well informed and up to date having read the many posts from Rolf and others on this subject and also admit to having enjoyed and been stimulated by them.  I was equally happy to see the subject exhausted and reach a natural settling with agreeing to differ.  On the above posting I have been drawn to enter my 2p worth.  I am aware of the extensive legal arguments put forward for not doing as niC has and from my level of understanding there is not a leg to stand on.  From the ethical and moral point there is necessity to realise the difference between the two: ethics = a system of principals governing morality and acceptable conduct.  Now the catch is whether the person is operating from a level of, "I can live with my self" / "its between me and my God" (Moral = personal / arising from a sense of right and wrong) or on what society will think of him.  From a personal point of view then I would act morally to live at peace with myself - I recognise that this can and is often seen as taking the law into ones own hands leading to anarchy and chaos, but hey I believe in personal responsibility and accepting consequences of my actions and trusting that intention is the most important thing, and that within us all we know what is right and good without the need for laws, though guidelines for smooth living are valuable - thus in effect I am saying that if I wanted this program or similar, and could not register this program and someone offered it to me then to avoid guilt feelings and to help with a sense of honouring and exchange I would for example make a donation to the scout movement or similar and do my best to return with interest to the community any benefits I receive.  Now this is moral behaviour and I would sleep at night - unless imminent legal prosecution were coming ;-)  - I accept that it might upset sections of society and is probably if not definitely breaking the law.  I also know that judgement of others in such situations are impossible as we do not know another mans heart and thus it is not for me to judge the intention of niC only to be aware of my own response to it.  Similarly it is not for me to say how the family of this author will feel about it, the only thing I can know and what I have to live with is how I feel, and if I feel my actions will bring greater good to the world.  I acknowledge the advantage to follow procedure and do my best to work within happily functioning methods, and when they fail I have to muddle through as best I can.  Not sure how why I felt moved to write this but guess it has been in my mind for a while and wanted to be free of it, sorry if it has burdened any of you.  As ever my regards for the family and friends and relations are paramount, and I am equally sure as Rolf mentioned that this issue of his MBM program is way down on their list of priorities.  Thanks for all the interesting comment in the past.

Kind Regards

Mark

Re.: Emails on D - I am sorry to come back to this again. You wrote "but the latter solution will at least keep the emails safe". I also seem to remember that when the batteries are low and you try to write to the D-disk there might not be enough power and the file will be corrputed. I don't know whether this will corrupt just the one email or the email file in general. So in the end I am not sure the D-disk is safer or not.

As to the PSU problem, would a serial cable with power connection not be a cheaper option ? Also, sometimes putting a small peace of cardboard on top of the back-up battery to keep it in place and press on the contacts can help as well (as another subscriber recently wrote as well).

<bless you> ;-) Steve, I do know that most excellent data base, but the explanations are too short for me as far as I remember. For instance, ini "is an initialisation file", but in the PSion system it also holds settings, registration (?) etc., and the etc. is what interested me.

And thanks for the filetext - tip!

Well, it's somewhat easier than changing a screen cable, and some 5mx-es do have a better keyboard, I believe. I for one, have the impression they get worse, not better with time. Otoh, some lubricant might be a good idea (it's really no problem to pop the keys, provided you do not forget the layout ;-) but there is rubber underneath (quite thin) and mineral lubricant would probably dissolve it. What could be used that won't dry, won't catch dust (thus probably making things much worse), won't damage the rubber or the plastic?

Rolf, please: the cable IS poor, stats or no stats... ;-)

Could we please now file the class action it all started from? ;-)

The e-mails are NOT necessarily safe on the CF. As I've said before (but people keep forgetting when they give advice on this topic), you should NOT keep your e-mails on D if you use rechargable batteries.

The reason is that rechargeables can drop very quickly below the voltage needed to write to the CF when the Psion is using a lot of power for the RS-232 or IR-port. If this happens while you're online receiving e-mail, you WILL get a corrupted index file and loose access to ALL your e-mails. It's happened to me twice. After that I put my e-mails on C:, and have not had any more battery level related e-mail failures.

If you use rechargeables, I suggest keeping your e-mails on C: and making a regular (daily if necessary) backup of the entire Mail folder (or even the entire C drive) to the CF disk. I have Navigator installed on D: and regularly copy the entire contents of C to a zip file called "C.zip" on the CF. (remember to store the files with the absolute path) When I changed from the old dying MC218 to my recently aquired replacement 5mx, I simply unzipped the file back to C and soft reset the machine.

One little gotcha was that the MC218 and 5mx have a different layout on the silkscreen buttons, Since the restore included the file C:\System\Shell\Shell.ini, the mx inherited the silkscreen layout from the MC218 which was rather confusing. I had to delete the file and soft reset the mx to restore the defaults. This won't be a problem if you restore to the same machine or an identical one.

Or use the RS cable that is available to power the Psion through the RS232 port. The contact for the external power supply has failed eventally on most of my S5 type machines, but not on the Mako (yet). In my experience, the three main weaknesses in the S5 design are the screen cable, power supply plug and screen activated on/off switch in that order. (I'm not counting cracked screens, because they are usually caused by accidents rather than normal use.)
