Yes, I can control the PC, but the problem is speed. If you are not on a high speed line, then it is difficult to manage working remotely (at least in my experience). Also, VNC is of little use if you are not tethered to a high speed connection (perhaps on a train, airplane or hotel). Thus, receiving a Word document (you lose all formatting) an excel spreadsheet or wordperfect document you need to open and review and not being able to convert it, is a bit of a problem.

That's good to know - thanks.
Because MacOsX is Unix based, and because there is Unix emulation of Windows, there has been talk on various sites of Apple's possible intention to include this emulation in future releases of MacOs X. Then all you have to do is buy Windows.
(I understand absolutely nothing about command line computing but I've managed to get Gimp and Abiword working on my eMac via X11. Abiword is particularly useful as it has filters for Psion word format.)
Does all this mean that it is now possible to emulate the Psion on the Mac?

Richard,
I haven't seen any programs that would work with the Psion. All the ones I've looked at so far are for Windows and depend on using the speaker/headphone jack from an SSB radio and a cable with a connector to a standard PC serial port or USB port on the other end. The PC then decodes the tones being transmitted by the radio station into a viewable picture on the PC. Since we plan on doing several years worth of sailing starting next year, I'd be interested if anyone else has nay different information since the Psion would be a nice backup to the PC.

I would recommend getting a CF reader (can be had for about EUR10, equivalent to about US$10). This assuming that your Mac will read the files written by the Psion and vice-versa - I was quite put out once to discover that Zip disks written by Macs can't be read in Zip drives connected to other machines - apparently the file formats are too different to be readable.
My experience of the serial connector as PsiWin is that the program is designed to expect to run only on a PC that has com ports 1 and 2 available, and will balk if thse conditions aren't met. It is also likely to fall over in any one of a undred other unpredictable circumstances where anything you have in the main computer is, or might be, accessing the comports.
It's reliability seems to be controlled through a NOT SOMETIMES logic gate.
I'm not aware that anyone has yet made PsiWin work using a USB-serial adaptor, for the reasons suggested above.
It would be good, though I imagine the market is not big enough, if someone would design and market a PMCIA or serial to USB adaptor for the Psion, proobably drawing power from a separate battery supply. That would give the Psion infinitely greater connectivity than it now enjoys.

I don't think you will get it to work using USB (see my reply to Aleck elsewhere in this Digest).
I think the infrared connector is probably the wrong standard for Psion - others here know the technicalities better than I do, but my understanding is that the subset of the standard used by Psion is not compatible with the standard for IR devices now most commonly encountered, and that this is not trivially easily rectified on either machine.
I have never heard of using the serial-parallel cable (normnally supplied for use with a printer) as two-way data transfer device other than for datsa being sent to a printer. I don't know if that would work but I suspect it wouldn't.
My VAIO (FX301) has a serial connector which does wotk with the Psion, under WinMe and Windows XP.
But the simplest way to go for me is to take out the CF disk and read it in the other machine. The netBook will read files written by the Vaio, you can covert formats easily using NConvert, MP3 files play in the netBook without alteration, and you don't have to have nything to do with the horrid PsiWin, which I don't think is much good.
Like too much of the Psion support programming (wireless LAN card drivers, for instance), it is written to work in a very narrowly defined set of circumstances, which may not be the cirumstances present in your set-up.

I wonder if this is a reference to the new netBook, reputed to be upcoming and runnoing WinCE, a dicision that would turn m firmly against the machine, not for religious reasons, but rather because I have no evidence that WinCe is a reliable platform for anything.

More lawyers, more money, more pressure on small companies to get out of that litigious marketplace! This strikes me as a bit of an over-reaction. Have you yet had a probolem? Have you any quanifiable loss as a result of this design fault, if that's what it is? Is it worse than the myriad bugs that plague Windows and Mac operating systems and cost millions each year in lost data? What is the reasonable expectation of performance from a low-cost PDA? One year? Two years? Is the Psion 5mx a better or worse performer than the Ipaq, which has at least one website (that's one more than the Psion) devoted entirely to its design and performance failures?
And the Psion isnt a car, its use threatens no lives, and you won't get hurt if it fails at high speed.
Perhaps it's just as well that in the UK, where the Psion company lives, there is no such thing as a 'class action'.

Subject: RE: EPOC icon removal from PC desktop
I recently replaced my home PC, and stupidly stopped the installation of EPOCSync part-way through the set-up process. I tried to reinstall, but the install program detects a previous copy & refuses to proceed. I have tried to delete & uninstall every reference to EPOC & Psion (including the registry using REGEDIT, probably being extremely reckless to do so!). However the desktop "My Psion" Icon just will not disappear, no matter how I try to delete it. I feel that if I could remove it then I could attempt a fresh install of PsiWin.
Any suggestions, or do I need to format my hard-drive?

I assume you're using free UK ISPs? With UK2, Freeserve
etc. you are required to send Caller Id in order to
send emails - many networks while roaming will not send
the Id despite your phone sending it, so you can't send.
Best thing is to try and select another network on your
handset and see if that improves things...

It is not!

My understanding is that IR on WinXP won't work
with PsiWin as it doesn't create a virtual Serial
port for IR - this is required for PsiWin.

Nope, because PsiWin just sees what your laptop
shows it, i.e. a parallel port and no serial port.

Buy another laptop? :)
Some have reported success with USB/Serial convertors,
but I'm not sure how well this works with PsiWin.
Do you still need to create a virtual Serial port?

New netBook perhaps? I want a PDA, not a PDA/laptop cross...
BTW, a little while ago the PDA "expert" at PCPro (normally
very reliable) stated in his column that Psion Teklogix is
no longer a Symbian licensee. If true, that means any future
netBook will be CE only - a bad move for most of us here.

Howdy!
Tim Williams was looking for the Oxford English Dictionary for his Psion. As I said in a previous message, I thought I had it somewhere in TomeRaider format. I did a search on my big and "slightly" disorganised external harddisk, and found "OED.tr". The file is just over 8Mb. Unfortunately, there is no way I can e-mail a file of that size via GSM phone.
I suggest you start by searching for the file on the web. I'm pretty sure I originally downloaded it off the TomeRaider web site a few years ago. If all else fails, I may be able to bring it in to work on a CF and get one of my workmates to e-mail it or maybe put it on an FTP server somewhere.

In past digests there were a few threads about the Mac.
If you have no specific need for X I'd recommend 9.x
A CF-reader (usb) will do and is oc much faster than cable-transfers NEVER copy Psion system data,
NEVER delete the invisible data the Mac writes to the CF,
and you should be fine. You may occasionally experience corrupt CFs, so dedicate one CF for data-transfer. Do not use your backup CF for this ;-)

Hi,
Renée (I know the difference between Renée and René <G>) has been having trouble with the power supply pin on her 5mx. I don't suppose that it will be easy to fix but I do have a solution that I find excellent.
I use a POD docking station which supplies the power through the Honda connector (only the serial port is available that way though). I don't know how easy it is to get the POD docking station in the USA/Canada as I got mine from Proporta (UK).
I assume the cable Owen mentioned comes from either R(adio)S(pares) or R(adio)S(hack) and is similar to the cable for the POD docking station, i.e. with a separate socket for the Psion power supply. That might be easier to get.
Happy days,

My PC emailing prog is called Ameol - www.ameol.com (or it might be .co.uk). It allows all sorts of filtering rules to separate email into different mailboxes. I've tried Outlook (2k & Express) as well as many other emailing progs through the years and I still come back to Ameol.
It allows you to export individual or grouped messages to text files. If the file already exists it gives you the option to append the new messages to the file.

IMHO a USB reader WILL always be A LOT faster. I thing that connecting a Psion or just any device through a USB adaptor cannot increase the transfer speed as it is always limited by the serial interface.
Just an example, I downloaded a TomeRaider dictionary of about 12 MB i size and I (foolishly) tried to copy it via the serial using the FTPserver app. The estimated time was more than 90 minutes, don't remember exactly. Don't need to say I stopped the transfer immediately. Then, in a CF USB reader the complete process took less than one minute.

I personally have no experience with the adaptor, but you can get a USB
reader for about 50 euro in my country (the Czech Republic).

Failed to send emails in Athens (including hotel landline) , Bari and Rome so looks like a quirk of the southern european phone companies. Hopefully I'm ok from now on as heading for Switzerland and Spain. But would be interested to know if anyone has a workaround cos I'm bound to be back that way again. Had a similar problem in Austria where refused to connect but solved that by selecting another network and connected to the netBook straight away.
