Hi Owen

I recently bought a brand new Toshiba Laptop and was told at the time that as Laptops tend to lag behind Desktops as far as features are concerned, there aren't any out there with USB 2.0 just yet.  My own has 2 USB 1.0 ports and a Firewire port - which I figured at least gave me some chance of attaching high speed peripherals.

So, although I can't give you any way to find out for sure, I should think it's a safe bet that what you have is USB 1.0.  Sorry to disappoint.

Hello Saj,

I recently experienced the same problem due to a change in laptops.  I use a PCMCIA serial port adapter manufactured by Socket, to connect to a Toshiba laptop, running Windows XP Pro.  It plugs into a vacant PCMCIA port in the laptop - assuming you have one.  Their website is at

http://www.socketcom.com

The only problem I have experienced with this solution is an inconsistent performance with regards to the synchronisation of emails with multiple attachments: most often than not, I don't get them all!

Hope this helps.

If you hold down Control and then type 10002, and then release Control the infrared dialog will pop up.

Save you messing around with Macro 5 at all!

However it would not send a SMS I have written to Zenobyte <could you please let me know if you intend to release a version of Phoneman for SonyEricsson P800 and if so when> let us see if they reply. Meanwhile does anybody on the list know if the existing settings allow a connection between the netBook and the P800 via Phoneman? <

Hi Francois,

The existing settings doesn't work between the P800 and a Psion. I guess Steve will do whatever he can to incorporate support for the P800. AFAIK it shouldn't be necessary to update the program itself, just the plugin PhoneMan Ericsson Support, currently v1.08.

I also miss my PhoneMan so lets hope they can add support for it.

Hi,

Owen said "I'm actually using the cable from a POD docking station. I also got cable that supplies power through the RS-232 with my MC218. You can use either of these cables without connecting to a PC."

Trouble is I ain't got a PC! What shouldn't I connect to instead?

Incidentally, Owen and Jan are almost certainly right if you *ever* connect to an eMail account using battery power. But I never do. My modem is mains-powered so I can't use eMail (or that InterWeb thingy) at all if we have a power-cut (and since I have 2 Psion transformers I'm pretty safe otherwise). Consequently my eMail store is on D: though it's pretty empty (thanks again to Sergio).

Happy days,

Phil.

Firstly, USB2 peripherals should be backward compatible, so the one you're thinking of buying should still work even if the Tosh is only USB 1.1. The main difference is speed - 1.1 being a lot slower than 2.

I've been looking at the US Tosh web site, they have the spec sheets for the Satellite 4090XDVD and the Satellite Pro 4090XCDT, both are listed as having a USB speed of 12Mbits/s which according to www.usb.org is the

speed of USB1. "High Speed" USB is quoted as 480Mbits/s - I believe this is what is referred to as USB2.

Hi group,

I've just updated some of my .aif files with colour ones, including Monopoly. While Monopoly is in beautiful colour in the Extras bar it's still monochrome in my system screen (with a middle zoom level). The reason is fairly simple. The original .mbm & mask .mbm files were made for monochrome screens and the easy way was just to create one icon set of 48x48 pixels. When zooming the icon will adapt to the right size. However, when using colour icons this doesn't work. Then an icon set are needed for each zoom level, i.e. 24x24, 32x32 and 48x48 pixels. All sets can of course be in a single .mbm file.

The Monopoly icon will of course be in colour in the large zoom level, but will the revert to monochrome in the middle and small zoom level.

Now Martin, isn't that a job for you? <BG>

Following my recent request for help in removing the resulting Psion icon after a bad install of PsiWin, I'd like to say many thanks to Boudewijn, Julie Campbell & Mike McConnell who sent me the Psion RegCleaner fix. I have now managed a clean install of PsiWin 2.3 and my Mako is already safely backed up.

Subject: Help with PsiNMEA please!

I've just loaded the very comprehensive looking PsiNMEA program, and have successfully connected it to my Raytheon 420 chartplotter GPS in my boat. I know that the GPS has successfully connected, because PsiNMEA can read the lat/long and time from the GPS. However, I cannot get PsiNMEA to send or receive waypoints from the GPS. On the menu the "send" and "receive" options are greyed out, and yield "not available" if I try them. Can anybody explain this?

There is no helpfile with the app, and no online help, so I am stuck.

Re.: MBMView Regis - I think that at this stage it is unlikely that any software house will take on a new already quite widely used program for a distinct operating system as there really is not that much profit to take anymore. Maybe it would be more workable to find a suitable private person who has written shareware software for EPOC in the past himself (Steve Lichfield, Rolf Vonau or others) and might be willing to continue the registration of this program ?

PsiWin 2.3x comes with an add-on that allows e-mail synchronisation with Outlook but not Outlook Express. As Microsoft had to release the full version of Outlook '97 for free due to bug fixing issues you're probably able to download a copy from the Internet.

Dear Saj,

<< I AM P****D OFF! (sorry) >>

I'm very sorry to hear that, Saj. Still, there's one thing I don't understand. Why did you buy a laptop without a serial RS232C port when one of the jobs it has to perform is to work together with your netBook and PsiWin uses a serial cable connection? I'm afraid you now have to enter the murky world of adapters and convertors that don't always work very well.

The connection options you have are:

a) Adding a USB to RS232C convertor

b) Using the laptop's infrared interface

and,

c) Adding a RS232C port in the form of a PC-Card.

All three need to come with a Windows driver that creates a serial COM port PsiWin can use. Trouble is that PsiWin wasn't written with such adapters and convertors in mind. Result is that some of these solutions work fine, some are a bit flaky and others don't work at all.

Another alternative is to use a PC-Card to CF card adapter, to swap the files using a CF card and to convert the file on the laptop using PsiWin's stand-alone conversion tool.

Dear Darryl,

When you're using an ISP like Freeserve your identification consists of your user ID, password and the number of your phone. Not all mobile networks transfer the phone number (CLI = Caller Line Identification) for international calls. This is probably the reason why you're allowed to retrieve your e-mail but not send it out as ISPs guard against spammers making use of their SMTP servers.

But couldn't even connect with that combination .... Enabled Link to desktop - connect using cable. Control panel / modems changed modem type to fixed line and connection to cable ... >>

You need to disable the Link tool as you'll be using the serial port for connecting to a desktop/laptop and a mobile phone at the same time. This is bound to create conflicts.

2. Is it possible to add other characters to the Special Character list currently native to EPOC?

Sound like you've accidentally deleted one of the support files (or another poorly behaving program has deleted it when, say, being removed from the machine).  Try a re-install.

>>>>

Also, the MBM icon on my extras bar is in colour but it's only monochrome displayed in the System screen.  Why?

<<<<

I suspect because the author was slightly lazy and only created a 48x48 pixel colour icon in the .aif file.  A nice author provides 24x24, 32x32, and 48x48 pixel icons in it (and ocassionally a 16x16 icon if he's being revo-friendly).  Reason?  Well, you can get away with a 48x48 icon because EPOC will automatically scale the 48x48 icon to 32x32 and 24x24 for the smaller resolution views in the System screen (and 16x16 on the revo).  It's not a good idea for the author to do this because 1) EPOC's attempts at scaling to a smaller icon size are never as good as the real thing, and 2) it only scales in greyscale - not colour.  An easy test for this: go to the offending icon in your System screen and zoom in the view to its largest magnification - the icon will automagically become colour again...  :-)

Hi Rolf,

I'm not unwilling to act as a kind of intermediary but think we need to come up with more concrete proposals. You write, for example, that RMR Software may be a candidate for taking over MBMView - either the sale or the sale plus further development. Question is, is RMR Software really willing to do that and what are its conditions? I think we stand a much better chance when we're able to create a kind of business proposal that tells Lieuwe's family what will happen with MBMView when they agree to one of the options we mention.

<<<<

Very fair point.  I'll get in touch with Al Richey at RMR in the next few days and see what he says.  I'll get in touch with you off-digest with his response.

However, I think we need to be prepared for the simple situation that Lieuwe's family doesn't know much about software, doesn't know where Lieuwe kept his source files and other resources, etc, etc. In other words, that *we* might have to do everything that's needed.

<<<<

Yes I suspect that'll almost certainly be the case.  The trickiest part may simply be helping them get the appropriate files off his PC...

Help!

I've just switched my Psion 5mx off, taken the CF card out, (read a file off the card on my PC,) put the card back in, and now the On (Esc) button has no effect.  I haven't dropped it or anything - there doesn't seem to be any reason for this that I can see.

I've tried taking the CF card out, and a soft reset, to no avail.  I had the external power plugged in at the time, and have tried it with and without it - no change.  If I have to try a hard reset I will, but I'd rather try anything else first, as it's a week since I last backed up :o(

My 5mx is configured to switch on when opening it, but closing and opening doesn't work either (although, sometimes it doesn't seem to anyway).

Please does anybody have any ideas?
