Dear Saj,

<< No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe ... >>

In case the posting the words of John Donne has to do with the "as war could start in a few hours from now ..." remark you made in another message, I'd like you to consider the following.

We all need a small island in our lives we can call our own. An island isolated from all that's happening in the wider world. An island we can retire to, albeit for a brief period, to get our minds off the worries of the world - to concentrate on some of the other aspects that make life worth living - to gather some mental strength to face the 'real world' again. I'd like the EPOC Digest to be part of my personal, isolated island amidst the turmoil.

Dear Stephane,

<< Perhaps someone could give me a hint on the way to do that ... >>

Data is the front-end to an EPOC database engine that has many more tricks up its sleeve than Data uses - the engine can handle SQL (Structured Query Language) searches and selections, for example. When you have access to Data's source code you can thus add a Find function that allows you to enter more than one key phrase. The function could also allow you to select which fields need to be included and excluded for this particular search ... etc. The programming code you add translates user entries into an SQL query, passes the query on to the database engine and displays the record(s) in the familiar Data fashion.

As for changing field type and length, that's also possible by modifying the existing Change Label functions. Though I have to add that changing the field type goes against everything I've learned about database design. Databases are all about structured data storage. Somebody who has to change field type after having entered an x-number of records hasn't thought about structure and is learning what databases are about the hard way.

Still, when you want to have the ability to search a Data files using more than one key phrase there's the freeware PsiDat by Kevin Millican. Though I have to warn you, these searches are entered using SQL so that you have to become familiar with SQL statements.

<< Ian, could you persuade your "very good authority " at Psion to have a colour screen  added to their revisited 5mx...? >>

Do realise what you're asking for because adding a colour screen while leaving everything else unchanged has its side effects. The Sharp Mobilon 4500 of old had a colour screen and was powered by two AA batteries, just like the Series 5 and 5mx. It wasn't a success as the most people got out of a pair of Duracells was two hours of use.

Subject: Wlan card for netBook

Hi All.

I want my netBook to have wireless access. At the time I bought the netBook, only one card was supported: the Cisco Aironet 340. You needed to have a separate driver. I upgraded to the latest epoc version available and I am wondering if wifi support is built in now. I really would like to know if someone is using wfi cards that are working with no problems. I noticed the information on http://hasbrouck.org/netbook/ which lists some models that are suppoed to work. I would like to hear some real life examples.

Thanks in adance,

Where do you find audio books and comedy shows in MP3 format? Do you need to convert the files to make them work on the Psion? I have a Mako and a 5mx, but no netBook (yet). I almost bought a Creative Zen MP3 player yesterday though. (399 Euro at Peats in Dublin.) With a Zen I could have my whole music collection in a box the size of a packet of cigarettes! I could feel the money pulsating in my wallet! I'm still fighting the urge to go back and buy it, and it may be a loosing battle... One thing that's holding me back is that it _might_ be cheaper in Edinburgh, and I'm going over on Wednesday.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies about my problems with street I removed all the maps with add remove but it did not fully remove them. Also I get an error message about a corrupt disc sometimes so I think I must format and reinstall - that'll keep me out of mischeif for a while!

My excitement with the Gold card lasted a very short while - 1 successful call and now the device is 'Unsupported' on both the S7 and Malaybook. Itamar I recall you had some problems with a gold card or am I mistaken? I have tried resets to no avail, but the very old travel modem still works OK.

I do not feel this would be a desirable route, and there are plenty of forums for such discussion - I highly recommend http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion which has some amazing forums and debates for a specific link for the ethics of war see http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/ethics/war/warindex.shtml -, as it could be a slippery slope and upset many who would not enjoy such arguments here even if they would enjoy them elsewhere - I am in this camp.  I do however feel it is appropriate to have such discussions which are directly related to a psion issue, which we seek clarity on.

As I am one of those who enjoys such conversations I have emailed you off digest a reply to <<<"But with intelligence also comes the will to rule over other people, to be better and more powerful">>> which is not my understanding :-)

Kind regards

PS Thanks NicB for confirming my suspicions that we Psioners are a decent bunch of people.  A very generous and kind offer you made with regards to the MBMView issue.

I have been reading with interest the use of the Psion MP3 player over the last few digests. I too have been using it with much success - however, I have some comedy files that are high quality stereo audio which come in at approximately 20mb - can anyone recommend a windows based utility to reduce them to something much more manageable by reducing the quality? I have tried DietMP3 but that made only a couple of megs difference.

Thanks

Subject: Installing RMRTask on 5mx Emulator

Hi, everyone. My 5mx is now immobilized on my desk, its screen now just legible. It looks as if it's being viewed through railings. Any more opening and closing would very soon finish the screen cable off.

Until the family finances are willing to pay for a repair, I intend to rely on the Emulator. (It won't be easy taking the PC on the train, but I'll cope.) The most important 3rd-party app that I want to get running is RMRTask. I've been begging advice from Al at RMRSupport, He provided me with PC versions of OPXes to go in  the \System\OPX\ folder, and also a file \System\Libs\RMRShared\RMRShared.osl This is our latest exchange:

>>>

Oh dear.   Never heard of that happening before.   You probably need to contact Symbian about it

Can anybody suggest any more promising course of action?

Yes! I have known it all the time! It lives! <g>

I don't really have an idea, the only thing I could imagine is that you run some macro at switch on which causes this behaviour....

Yes, I could not say i'm loving  my dishwasher :)

And yes, we are focused on that, because we are reading often about it, but you didn't reply to the point of psion's repair philosophy ("Oh, I'm sorry but we have to change the intact screen too! Wait - mmh .. this will make 220 €....").

Great! Therefore the cables without such holes "could be" after all a solution and not only an alternative!? :)

Anyway, If the cables without holes will last 3 times longer, so 6 years, I will be very satisfied. I'm only sad about my touchscreen of my old mxPro unit which broke during the attempt of solder the old cable "away". (For some reason the screen was glued up with the touchscreen .. :-(  )

Therefore I have to wait until this screencable (with holes) will fail, before I can test such without holes :)

Does anybody need a 24MB mxPro without cable and with broken touchscreen? Or an repaired classic with pealing but otherwise good condition?

I'm interested in using mp3 files on my S7 using the mp3 player available but I can't seem to find anywhere I can get them with them already decoded to the correct bitrates for playing them (I don't have access to a PC to do this).

Somebody needs to remove all the archived pages with un-munged email addresses from The Wayback Machine (www.archive.org IIRC).
