Get an inverter for your vehicle. An inverter is a device that converts 12V to 120VAC (or 240VAC if you're a Euro) so you can plug in your light duty household devices like laptops.

I just ordered a Malaysian netBook from the Malaysian company that

got all of them from the Malaysian government - $258 plus shipping.

It comes with a 220-240V adapter so I'll have to change that. I

think the eBay outfit selling them for $449 plus shipping, bought its

stock from the Malaysian company - http://www.sitashop.com/home.asp

Subject: Wi-Fi networking: netBook and Mac -working

I now have the Cisco Aironet 340 working with my Mac:

Initially I got the netBook to talk to Mac but it could not access the internet:

I now have netBook talking to Mac. The Mac is acting as a software basestation (by sharing its ethernet link with machines attching via airport). I had to set the IP addresses on the wireless cards to a different subnet to the Mac's ethernet. Then it all works ... except the Psion can only access the Mac not the internet. The Mac is connected via ethernet to an ADSL router.

Then I managed to get full access:

I now have this working. I have set up sharing on Mac and no longer set its IP address for Airport directly but have chosen DHCP. Likewise on Psion. I cann access Mac from Psion using the address I have alocated

to its ethernet card and I can access internet from Psion too. The Mac shares out its connection - it is connected via ethernet to an ADSL router.

Belated thanks to Richard Ryerson and Marcus von Cube, who both solved my problems with printing from the S5.

I am tempted by the Netbook, not for any really good reason, but (a) it seems to be a fabulous machine, (b) it's EPOC, not Microsoft, (c) it's a sensible size, and (d) at less than £300 on eBay it looks a bargain - which I've always found hard to resist.   Hmmm - that seems to be four good reasons!  Does anyone know of a shop that has them, so I could try the keyboard, assess operating speeds, etc?

Thanks in advance, again

In strict business terms it is now the family's responsibility to step forward, legally they can be litigated, sued >>

I don't think the family can be sued because it was Handango that was the seller and Handango that accepted the payment. In case Handango can't arrange that the correct registration codes are sent to its customers it will have to give them their money back. When Handango refuses to do so these people can contact their credit card agency.

What science does is to search for common principles that describe the physical world around us. Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection is thus scientific as it describes the general priciples behind the evolution of species.

It isn't because there's a difference between pointing out that certain information can be found on the web and pointing out where that information is. The latter can be an offence in a number of countries when it concerns information that allows people to perpetrate a criminal act.

Dear Itamar,

Intelligent life forms,

<< "Self-aware" is indeed the difference, but to say that various types of monkeys have their own culture I think is a little far-fetched >>

First, chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos aren't monkeys - they're primates. Secondly, we're talking about the 'low culture' of everyday life rather than the 'high culture' of music, paintings and literature. The culture of starting dinner at nine in the evening rather than at six. The culture of how you greet somebody you know and somebody you've never seen before.

<< Yes, animals have fights for leadership and kill for food, but they don't kill out of cruelty or sadism without any reason like human beings do >>

I'm afraid you're mistaken. There's an example close to home - the domesticated cat who's regularly fed by it's 'master' but still goes out hunting. Rather than killing and eating its prey it starts to play with its prey, wounding it more and more until it's is dead. And there are other examples from the animal kingdom.

<< Besides my objections to Darwin out of my Judasim, I still think it is an unproven theory as many many links are still missing >>

Sorry, but this shows you haven't grasped Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin gives an explanation why species evolve, not how species evolve.

Besides, a gap in the historical record doesn't invalidate what you know about the periods before and after the gap. I can trace my family line back to Leffert Breustinghe who was born around 1550. I don't know who Leffert's parents were. Still, there's no need for me to speculate whether Leffert sprouted from a cabbage, as the old children's story goes. There are records for other families which go back (much) further than 1550. It's from these that I can say that Leffert had parents.

Subject: Upgrading a standard 5mx to Pro

Hi.

Another digest member has a 24mb 5mx Pro with a broken touch sensitive layer on the screen for sale. I'm thinking of buying it and using the motherboard to upgrade my standard 5mx to Pro specification.

Can anyone think of a reason why this would not work? It's been a while since I've opened up a Psion 5. As far as I remember, the ROM is on a seperate PCB. Will it be enough to replace this, or do I need to change the whole moterboard?

Did Psion panic, I wonder, when the heavyweight manufacturers first started producing their own PDAs for the mass market?  And yet, as you say, most of us seem to agree that the OS and hardware are still hard to beat.  The 5mx was still selling well right up to discontinuation of manufacture so there was no proven huge drop in sales on the machine.  In fact, I seem to remember the last list price was around 280 GBP which made it particularly competitive when you compare the functionality offered for that price against the competition.  Had Psion continued development, we can only guess at what may have been but I'd wager most of us on this Digest (OK, so we're biased!) would be prepared to pay more for an improved colour 5mx.

Neil, yes I think it is...AFAICS you can change the font colour on the title bar, the menu, the toolbar and buttons etc, but not on the desktop itself, if that's what you're asking...

Hi Michael, you don't say whether you wish to use GPRS or GSM, so I am assuming the latter? Anyway, I connect as follows (my server is not HSCSD but offers a 14.4k connection):

MODEM

Name: Nokia 6310i

Speed: 57600

Connect Via: Infrared

Fax Class: Auto

INITIALISATION

Init (reset) string: AT&F&K3

Data init string: I e AT+CBST=16

Fax init string: blank

ADVANCED

Flow control: Hardware (RTS/CTS)

Terminal detect: (DSR/DIR)

Carrier detect: not ticked

Modem: mobile

Hope this works!

Daniele, in a word the answer is, yes.  In my recently acquired S7, the same settings as I had used in Revo and 5mx work fine.  Re the GPRS connectivity upgrade, I believe this is only for certain phones, and if I remember rightly, specifically not for the S7. (I, too, tried it in error, but on uninstalling, everything worked OK again.)

G'day Daniele,

I exerienced the same problem trying to set up GPRS on my S7.

I don't have the unit with me at present but I remember Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0 is required. However one file that the MCU 2.0 puts on the machine (I think /system/libs/IRDA.prt) should be removed.

Good Luck,

Subject: C700 Redux

Dear Jim,

You (JC) wrote in reply to Peter Rand (PR):

"JC> Comfortably carry in your shirt pocket? The Revo comes in at 1.45 ounces.

The C700 is just about 8 ounces. The dimensions are also almost double that of the Revo. I rather doubt that the C700 qualifies as being something you'd carry in your shirt pocket.

PR>That's fine and dandy if you're a Windows fan. I have Windows at work, and

it's ok, but I've always >>preferred to run non-Windows machines at home. That's why I use EPOC/PalmOS instead of Windows/WinCE. So the C700 lets users keep a distance from Windows at home, while with the C1VN you're totally locked in to the whims of Redmond - not a pleasant thought for some people.

JC>News flash here, but whether you can describe them as "fans" or not, the vast majority of people do run computers with Windows. You may have an aversion to our towheaded boy from Redmond but those are the facts."

You might not know, but people on this list certainly are using something other than MS for their PDAs and handheld computing needs and I suspect given a choice for their PDAs, they would much rather be using a non-MS platform. So while Peter was expressing an opinion shared by many on this list, your information, factual though it may be, is somewhat irrelevant here. As I recalled we are talking about Handheld PCs/PDAs here, not laptops or desktops.

"PR>A non-issue for me, since I don't use Outlook.

JC>With the operative phrase being "for me". How many people have switched away

from Psion because of its syncing problems with Outlook? Like it or not, Outlook is the defacto standard in the corporate world and StarOffice isn't going to replace it.

PR>. Same with Word and Excel.

JC>See my comments above. Most of the world does use Word and Excel so 100% compatibility is a very important feature for them"

Again, while Peter was preaching to the choir, you are obviously talking to the wrong crowd, a lot of people on this list have been using their Psions very well despite not having 100% compatibility with MS products, and I suspect they would take the Symbian OS any day over 100% MS compatibility if it means using MS OSes.

PR>I wouldn't even consider purchasing a machine without instant on.

JC>Once again the operative phrase being "I wouldn't." Win2k and Win XP boot in

less than 30 seconds, not a huge problem for many people.

I suspect many people on this list would see this as a problem, we are all so used to instant on AND off, in that 30 seconds while you are booting up your laptop, I would have opened up my psion, jot down down some notes. Off it, on it shortly after because I just remembered to check my agenda, jot a To-Do and off it again.

I can buy one of these right now at Costco for $1299 with no worries

about Japanese localizations and convoluted warranty problems.

PR>Hmm.... size of a small laptop? The C700 fits in a pocket (is 4x lighter than the C1VN), it isn't tainted by Microsoft, it has instant on, offers Office compatibility, there's lots of free software available, and it's half the price of the C1VN. Plus it can be used either in PDA mode or in keyboard mode.

JC>I think you'd still need a pretty big shirt pocket. The tainted by Microsoft

comment is too tiresome to comment on. There's also a bunch of free software for Windows - in fact, I would bet that there are many times more free programs for Windows than all the programs for Linux put together. And your size, weight, and price calculations start to get closer to the Sony once you factor in an extra battery and/or extra charger so you can get more than even the claimed four hour battery life of the C700. Even the Revo will get you through a few days of use before it needs recharging. The whole appeal of a PDA is lost on me if I can't even get through a normal business day without a recharge. At least with a real laptop, I know that comes with the territory. Oh, and I can't wait to see the hinge problems that develop with the whole folding aspect of the C700.

Jim, I believe you are talking on a different wavelength to Peter. Peter is talking about a possible Revo sucessor, while you are talking about a mini-laptop which is better being compared to a psion Netbook, I certainly dont see the Sony C1VN as ANY PDA successor, and I strongly doubt anyone on this list does either.  You are also wrong about the dimensions of the machine. Here they are from the official sites:

Revo

157mm x 97mm x 17mm

200g

Sharp C-700

120 x 83mm x 18.6mm

225g

May I ask where you did you get the impression the C-700 is a lot bigger and heavier than the Revo?

Also, Peter in his last mail did not specify the shirt pocket, he just mentioned the C-700 is pocketable.  Looking at the dimensions it will fit into my jacket inside pocket very comfortably, which is where I am currently carrying my Revo. The Revo is too bulky for my shirt pocket anyway.

I look forward to your responses.

Kind regards,

Koi Hin
