That was the same with my 5MX. I opened it with caution and found that the microswitch had come off the main board and was laying around inside the machine. I was lucky that the metal parts of the switch did nor short circuit anything else. With a good eye, a fine soldering tool, good light, half a burned finger and much luck I managed to re-solder it in place. You can see very well where its normal location is, but you definitely need some experience in soldering.
After that "operation" the switch works as needed. I did not need to disassembele the whole thing. Just take it apart until you can see the part of the motherboard where the switch is (or should be<g>). I even managed to do the soldering without disconnecting the display cables.

Subject: Faxing with a calling card
Live in the US and no longer have a long distance phone company, using instead the cheap calling cards you get from places like Costco. However trying to send a fax is a mess. The basic fax program I have on my PC does not have an option to enter calling card numbers, so I can't send an out of the area fax. Now that I'm the proud owner of an MBook with the fax/modem, wonder if the included fax program has the ability to accept 3 eleven digit numbers plus the required pauses between the numbers (for the mechanical voice to ask you to enter choices). I've just briefly looked at the manual and didn't see much info. Or is there a way to work around limitations?
FYI I ordered a 64MB CF with the MBook. Using the bench test program, this card is the fastest card I have. I have a 16X 64MB Ridata and a 20X 256MB Ridata and both have slower W&R speeds. The card says HTL and Singapore.

Is it the first time you backed up since the summer time change? I seem to remember that the PsiWin backup routine does a full backup twice a year when it detects a hour setting on the PC that is different from the one on the Psion.

John, if it was your first backup since you changed your time to Summertime, then no problems exist: there is a bug in PsiWin that insists on one making a full new backup after changing the hour.... I call it "the night of the long backups" :-)

Subject: Unnecessary Heat
Hi,
About Antony's Post:
I was born an American (Ohio), am now a naturalized Briton and I also speak French, a little German, some Welsh, some Latin and bits of Italian. My antecedents are Pakistani, American, Scandinavian, Irish, Scots and (mostly) English. I have relatives in the USA, Canada, Hong Kong and Africa too. I have friends from Colombia, France, Germany, New Guinea, Belgium, Syria, Barbados, Spain, Jamaica, India, Holland, Nigeria, Australia, Russia, China, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, the Philipines, Argentina, Peru and Japan. This is not an exclusive list.
If someone insults me (unintentionally or otherwise) to my face they show misplaced courage. I'll not react violently because they're only insulting me. If they insult someone else I'll protect them from (deserved?) repercussions as they need my protection.
But such stupidity deserves no further protection.
If someone is stupid enough to insult a whole nation (unintentionally or otherwise) then they really need the kind of protection I cannot give. People of every nationality have made mistakes, even the English. It is both kind and strong to forgive them and forget their transgressions.
So I forgive Antony, and I hope you all will.
Stephane, I agree with Ian and I can speak with even more authority as a naturalised Briton. I would never have considered becoming British if such was the national attitude. I'm proud of my adopted country, especially when I disagree with it - it lets me say so, just as France would.
This digest is (rightly) international. There are conflicts and differences that may affect some but the only differences relevant here are those relating to our computers, mostly Psion. Heat in this area is reasonable, even necessary to debate.
No other heat is.

No new chip-set has ever compensated for the change from a greyscale LCD panel to a colour one. All mobile computers, be they handhelds or laptops, had to compensate by increasing battery capacity.

<< Thank you for helping me make my point. Peter's comments were addressed at the people on this list. So as with your statement above, Jim's comments about compatibility is not a overriding factor >>
That's where you're making the mistake. That this is the EPOC Digest, populated by people who don't use a Microsoft operating system and applications on their handheld computer, doesn't say that much on the importance of compatibility with Microsoft's desktop applications. You don't know, for example, how many of us don't use their Psion for certain jobs because of the limited compatibility.
<< How would this be construed as OS snobbishness? >>
Quite simple. With a sentence like "I suspect they would take the Symbian OS any day over 100% MS compatibility if it means using MS OSes" you're placing the operating system before anything else. Combine this with a string of negative value judgements on Microsoft's operating systems and we're back at the semi-religious operating system wars of old. The wars between the MacOS Cult, the Linux Order and the Windows Fellowship.

It's a bit silly to blame a decision that was made donkeys years ago when the humble floppy disk was an 8 inch one storing 80 kByte and hard disks were only available for the big iron computers. FAT was simple and worked well. It's the success of the IBM PC that has given us a few side-effects, like FAT still being with us for compatibility reasons.

I don't think it's the card. I deleted everything except a couple of Data files on the 256MB SanDisk CF card, put it back into the MBook and all went well. I've been fiddling with it so much that the battery icon is now red and I get a "recharge battery" message. So it's sitting on my shelf until I get the US AC/DC problem sorted

No I didn't. Are you suggesting that might have been the culprit? Another forum (PDA Street) response gave me a link to a Google form (comp.sys.psion.(either apps or misc, can't remember) posting which hinted that NoMore was the cause of a "somewhat" similar event. I did install NoMore. I could be wrong, but I *think* I may have been messing about with NoMore just before all this happened.

It's the biannual celebration of Daylight Savings Time. The first
time you backup after a time change, and you have PsiWin's backup
set to synchronize your PC and Psion clocks, all your Psion's files have a new time, so your PC says, "*Everything* has changed, so I

Dear Mark,
<< Yes never copy system folder files from the psion to the CF... >>
There's no problem in copying system file to CF card as long as you know what you're doing. When you want to have a safety copy of the C drive contents it's best to copy to a directory so that OPX files are not in the \System\OPX search path but in (say) \Backup_C\System\OPX.
<< I have tried 6 different CF card and 2 readers and they always do weird things to the CF cards >>
I see that you refer to a Macintosh. Don't know how it is with the latest versions of Mac OS and OS X, but I needed to mount non-Mac diskettes as PC diskettes when I worked with Macs quite some time ago. Doesn't the same apply to CF cards as they use the same FAT storage format as PCs? What you describe looks as if the Mac treats the CF card as Mac format.
____-------------------___________---------------________
Have read the excellent section on CF cards on Martins site and I think that it was saying the mac uses the same FAT as a psion. Since moving house and work I no longer use a mac so can not test the idea of copying the opx files into a directory which is not in the root C/system of the flash to see if that solves the problem maybe Vlad can try, but I have a suspicion that I got corrupt disks without copying any of the C:/ system files but can not be sure and have no means of testing it now. Other suggestions I have heard included long file names, but again I never managed to test this.

So I set about trying to get psion wap brouser to work with GPRS on the same settings. For some reason I can't - maybe this is some deliberate fixing by vodafone so you can only use the phone I don't know - get it to work, not sure if this is because it some how connects a different way not using *99#. I can get it to work - WAP on the psion wap brouser with the phone - using my usual GSM dial up but then I am charged for it or it comes out of my included minutes using +447836900808, ip 212.183.137.12. and of course it is not as fast as the GPRS. Is there anyone out there managing to surf wap from the psion using the settings (APN not sure what this is but I might have got this wrong) on the phone using GPRS?

Personally I have never had trouble syncing My Diamond Mako and Psion 7 to outlook or Novell. I prefer my Psion 7 which I use for word processing, keeping track of my credit cards, games, internet and email, and as a ebook reader. Personally I would never go back to a revo know that I am using a Psion 7 and will probably buy a Psion netbook and maybe down the road even a netpad though I doubt it I love the keyboard idea. My question is how would anyone use a psion 5mx or revo when the 7 and netbook exist. I carry my Psion 7 everywhere even into the bathroom to read. The keyboard, color and programs work for me. It has a simple operating system and plethora of fun usable programs. I personally do not need anything fancier and dislike pocketpc's and palms. I do not consider the Psion 7 bulky but enjoy using it in my car, bathroom to read, and anywhere I am or go.

I was talking from my experience with a mapping program on the PC. The maps are usually huge - bigger than most digital photos. When I click and drag
on the map to move it about, the software does not fill in exposed areas until I 'let go'. Yes, that does mean that during the drag large areas of the screen will be blank, but it seems to work OK in practice.
I should also point out that is it not necessary to fully decompress the entire JPEG when you only want to display a portion of it. There's two compression methods: the slow DCT algorithm that operates on each 8x8 pixel square, and the Huffman algorithm that operates on the processed DCT data. Huffman decompression is very fast, probably faster than the I/O used to read it! You can zip through the JPEG to the bit you want to display and *then* start the slow DCT decompression for the visible bits.
Since you brought it up, movies *do* benefit from hardware decompression. Waiting a second or so for a still image to pop up is acceptable, but not when you're trying to do 15+ frames per second! Assuming hardware decompression was implemented to assist in movie display, of course that should be used to speed up still image decompression (and MP3s if possible) !
However, I consider the idea of viewing movies on a PDA to simply be marketing hype of the order of "my dick's bigger than yours" :-) If viewing movies was so popular, we'd all have those portable LCD TVs or portable VCR/DVD players? While I regularly see people with packets of photos, and walkmans (i.e. still images and music), I just don't see people with portable movies. Movies are big-time-visual. The same reasons people don't buy 12" monitors anymore, and buy widescreen TVs is because the bigger displays are best for visual information. A tiny PDA screen is in
completely the opposite direction!
If the 'new 5mx' were to have a ~200MHz CPU like the netBook, that's *plenty* fast enough for JPEG and MP3 decompression. No need to waste time, money, effort and space on hardware decompression support. Leave the movies where they belong - on the home theatre.
Regards,

Yes, it's because of the switch to daylight savings time. Psiwin shows all
files with a last backup time that's one hour earlier than the present time
so it backs up everything. The way to prevent this is to first change the
time on your Psion, connect your Psion to your PC, open the drives, log off
PsiWin, and then do your backup. This gets the file times back in sync. If
you just go right to backup, all the files get backed up, which is why it
took so long.

Itamar,
The price listed by Dynamism is $700 compared to a new Psion from Psion USA
at $335 and a Mako/Revo which is generally available over here for about
$100. Without wanting to start another dustup, I noticed on the Dynamism
site that not only haven't they completed the English localization but
there's no sync available for Outlook -"they're working on it". They only
accept returns for five days after you receive the unit from Japan and
charge a 15% restocking fee. The only warranty is provided by Dynamism for
one year and involves shipping your unit back to Japan for repairs. It also
states that Sharp will provide no technical support for these Dynamism units
and all requests for technical support have to be directed to Dynamism. It
is also touted as having 32 mb of RAM but 18 mb is devoted to the OS leaving
you with 14 mb of user RAM, which is about 1 mb less the Psion has
available. With just the word processor, spreadsheet, and mail app open (no
files, mind you, just the apps) there's only 10 mb free. It also has no Mac
G4 connectivity at all although "they are working on it". With my Mako,
having Word, Sheet, and the Mail apps open shows 14.7 mb of RAM available.
Also, for those of you looking for Wi-Fi and 802.11 connectivity, using this
will drain the c700 battery in 20 to 30 minutes. There's more information at
http://avi.freedman.net/zaurus/slc700.html
I think I'll wait a while on this one.

Please do not misunderstand me regarding the replacement of parts. I was not stating that replacing some of the parts would be preferable, however, doing so could provide additional room to accomodate more advanced facilities. I understand that people will already have other equipment that utilises the existing connectivity features and would be reluctant to replace a 5mx that does not have these, but I suspect others would prefer the benefits of other technologies. As far as the Bluetooth/Wifi statement; I understand the difference between bluetooth connectivity and WiFi networking. I was simply expressing a personal preference for a WiFi feature rather than Bluetooth.

"it's a moot point because it is more likely that a Frenchman will grow a spine before Psion update the 5mx with a colour screen"<
I thought the point was clear, but I understand it may not translate well so I shall rephrase it. I was implying that the French are spineless and/or cowardly. I hope this clears the matter up :-)

It was not an attempt at humour, simply an insult and I never stated that all Englishmen or anyone else feel the same way

The forks are called "data" and "resource" and they exist in Mac OS X also unless you've formatted your disk as a UFS disk (which Apple does not recommend for normal users).

Macs read most disk formats, but not all. For example, I don't think a Mac will read an NTFS formatted disk from Windows NT/2000/XP without extra software (although I haven't tried this and could be wrong), but then neither will a Psion.

This is a known problem and it's usually the soldering where the switch is attached to the motherboard that has failed. In some cases only one side of the switch is loose, in other cases the switch will be rattling about inside the Psion.
You need to open up the Psion and resolder the switch. I've successfully repaired this on a 5 Classic and a MC218. Your 5mx will be the same. You need a small philips screwdriver, a soldering iron with a very thin tip, some thin electronic solder and some courage.
I believe there are a couple of web sites that deal with dismantling the 5mx. I don't have access to the web, so can't give you any URL's, but I'm sure someone else will chip in.
Try to avoid disconnecting the screen cable from the motherboard as this contact can be difficult to re-connect.
(Rolf Brunsting said a while ago that the screen cable is soldered both to the screen and the motherboard, but this is wrong. It is soldered to the screen and plugged in to the motherboard and the plug that is used on the motherboard is small enough that a similar one could have been used on the screen.)

Was this your first backup after the change to daylight savings time? There's a bug (or feature... :o) in PsiWin that causes a full backup when the daylight savings setting is changed. I suppose it may not be a bad thing to force a full backup twice a year.

I reckon that most would want to keep the CF slot, even suggesting that it become a Type II. I've got 7 solid state (with 2 more on order) and an IBM 1Gb hard drive.
The serial port is also most important, I would even like a second serial port (as built into the OS).
An external stylus would be a nuisance - it would get damaged and/or lost.
I keep seeing reference to WiFi - what is it?
<< The improvements that could be made could be accomodated by removing what would be the redundant parts of the existing design >>
I would not buy 'your' new design because I make use of your reundant parts.
