It was never meant it as a 5mx/netBook replacement, but I thought I could do something with it.
My problems are;
Keeps crashing with out of memory errors.
CPU doesn't seem to be able to handle medium size email (digest amongst them).
'Profiles' (and this is the most annoying) keep changing back to a default 'very quiet ring' setting, even after one call without a reset.
Any ideas?
Hi will
You need to run email on the Memory card: get yourself a big MMC
You also need to close programmes to regularly to free memory.
Try this Freeware programe Switcher to show you what memory is used/left. its at www.ki-ag.de
It also allows you to close programmes down and do a soft reset without removing battery:
or push menu then key left to see all open programmes.
Also buy a programme called Stacker only EUR 10
www.symbianware.com this is a fantastic compression programme. try these websites for more info

The Communicator is not and never was a replacemnent for the 5mx or Netbook. But it is a fantastic tool.
I use mine all day everyday

No. Martin said he didn't issue a color icon for EpocSync, because after running it the first time on the netBook, it becomes colored - and it does. :-) See my previous posting on how I solved the installation problem.

Dear Rolf,
RB> That's for the individual to decide. People tend to buy a handheld computer or a laptop for a mixture of reasons. A change in requirements can mean that the mixture changes as well, and that the Revo is replaced by a laptop, albeit a small form factor laptop.
In respect to the current Revo users who are on this digest, I suspect very few of them would see a laptop (even one with the form factor of the Sony C1VN) replacing their Revo. Perhaps, Rolf, you are one of those few?
RB>I'm not going to repeat the sentence you wrote again as you apparently don't see the message you're sending out. While the string of derogatory comments in the same message the sentence came from can't be described as a 'comparison'.
Just to clarify then, to any who have been following the correspondance between Rolf and myself (not too many I hope) I was NOT snobbing MS operating environments. As to your statement about derogatory comments that I have made, please point them out to me. I have not, to the best of my knowledge personally posted any derogatory comments on any topic.

AFAIK, Yahoo Groups allows a group's administrator(s) to control subscriptions - though you may have to set up the list that way from the start. I've only had a couple of SPAM messages at this addresses *this year* and none that I've suspected was caused by my use of Yahoo Groups. Not that I'm advising a change - but changing the digest to Yahoo Groups *would* save the team members a bit of work, and AFAIK still allow for control over who can subscribe. Something to think about?

Would this explain why (some time ago) when using *both* the IR port and the serial cable to transfer data *at the same time* my 5mx spontaneously hard-resetted itself *and* destroyed all the data on the CF?
Fortunately, I had a one hour old backup to restore from, and I was sure from then on to never, ever, attempt to transfer data via the serial cable and get my email via the IR modem at the same time. :)

I find EpoClock especially handy on my 5mx -- where I like to keep an eye on the voltage as well as the time -- even when it is necessary to hide the toolbar.

Oops, for those of you wondering about my wife's apparent ability to time travel, she saw the Psions for sale in Madrid on 12 APRIL, not May.
However, I will be there in May and can check out the details if anyone wishes me to.
Thanks to the team, and my sympathy for the dilemma on censorship.
I believe that the most effective way of killing ideas that are found objectionable is not to respond at all. In that way, the thread will wither.
The benefit of this approach is that we will only have ourselves to blame (not the team, nor indeed the perpetrator of the bad/boring message) if it is continued.

Subject: Censorship
Michael Degn asked for our views on censorship. Here's a contribution from an occasional contributor who, although English, has a home and family members in France.
I was appalled and saddened by the tone some of the contributions took. I know wartime feelings were running high, but one particular contribution added insult to injury in an unpardonable way. If we, the contributors, haven't the good sense to stop digging when we find ourselves in a hole, then censorship is the lesser of two evils. I have been constantly impressed by the almost saintly way our Digest Team have defused previous ticklish situations
Incidentally, as a fully paid-up member of the Society of Linguistic Pedants, I need to censure the use of "censure" when the verb should be "censor". This whole problem arose because the contributors who were censured persisted. This led to the need for them to be censored. [If you follow my train of thought!]
Keep up the good work. As a beleaguered minority we can't afford to lose our Digest - or any of its readers.

Dear Philip,

My wife tells me that on Sat 12 May, the latter section (on the first floor up) had on display both the 5mx and Revo (or Revo Plus) for sale. She did not check out the prices, but she said that there was no sign of any special sale going on. It just appeared to be routine availability. <<
I was in Barcelona two weeks ago and the El Corte Ingles in Plaça de Catalunya had a selection of Psion accessories at full price in a rather dusty display window (Travel Modem at Euro 300, anyone?). It's time for a clear-out sale.....

I would say that is a matter of opinion, surely? If it is an insult, is Yank an insult to Americans, Canuk to Canadians, Limeys to British? I think not, but some people might. To declare it is an insult is to declare that your opinion is the only valid one. I would like to remark that some French people may think it is insulting and others, not. Simple as that.

Re: Censorship
I would like to point out that I appreciate your position and if my involvement in the discussion has caused problems for the Digest Team (which I am sure it has), I am sorry for the inconvenience. I would like to thank you for not censuring my replys to other Digesters' personal comments, especially about being racist, which I find excessive considering the French are not a race, but a collection of races. Bigot, I'll accept, asshole? maybe. Member of the KKK? That's just funny. (btw got their number?) ;-) That said, this is my final word on the matter and have no intention of responding to any further remarks on the subject.
In reference to censorship in general, I think that even though there have been insults flying around on the digest, many of which directed at myself, I feel that it is important that postings should not be censored whatsoever. There is considerably worse information being presented via junk mail, web pages etc. I feel that every member of the digest can determine for themselves what is or is not acceptible to themselves. As one member stated; everyone has the capability of deleting what they do not wish to have like I do every day with every porn, child-porn, penis enlargement, 419 scam, viagra ... junk e-mail I receive. Anything on here is tame by comparison and considering the worst discussions originate from EPOC based postings mean they are unlikely to become any worse than they have been in the past.
I would also like to point out that unsubscribing people is another form of censorship and would be futile anyway, unless you vet the subscribers in advance; as I could (and may already have) resubscribe.
I am dissapointed that you felt the need to censure someones messages, especially so quickly, because I feel that it took little more than a few postings and a few demands from a couple of complaining Digesters for you to take an action whereby you became judge and juror on somebody's point of view, however valid or invalid.

Itamar – thanks for your reply. Is there any source of collated digests in one huge uber-digest? It would be nice to download it one go and skim through it. Has anyone collected them all? Would anyone be willing to forward them to me?
Re: Censorship
I support the ability of the EPOC Digest team to censor. I think positives to the community far outweigh the negatives to the individual. (Including the team’s right to censor me.)
It is annoying that there are so many off topic posts in the Digest (such as this one…). If censorship:
a) Keeps people on topic
b) Prevents hurtful comments
then I see it as a good thing.
Also, please everyone, let’s keep a sense of proportion – we’re not talking about censorship of the press for political gain, we’re talking about a group of Psion users (“Psioneers”, if you will) who want to swap information about getting the most from a PDA.
The censorship is not absolute. If you really want to read what someone says you can contact them off-digest. This would also help us see if the team was being over-censorious.
Complicated issues, but I think censorship is a necessary evil.

<<<today 1 didn't make into the Digest and I just hate it>>> I realise this is not desirable, and adds work and could be a waste of time as it is such a rare occurence, but you could place all off topic subjects or "censured postings" in a separate digest for people to look at if they choose.
Just an idea and not one I am particularly in favour of but might get round the obstacle of censorship, I would hope as others have expressed that in time we could resolve all conflicts and that there is a way through if we want it enough, there can be no conflict if we do not engage in defensiveness (Simple but not easy I realise).
This can be difficult in times when we try to make light of a sensitve subject.

Just for the record Edgar (since Keith has fixed the problem), I haven't created an icon for EpocSync since it already comes with a colour icon which installs itself after the program is run for the 1st time.
Whilst I'm on the subject of colour icons, the article I wrote explaining how they are created has now been published on FoxPop and on my own website as promised. I'd welcome icon contributions for publication from anyone who fancies creating their own. :-)

I tend to agree with Philip Adkins Potter's suggestion that offenders should receive one public warning on the Digest (so that they can appeal if appropriate) before being censored. I.e. 'Censure then Censor'... ;-) My 2¢ anyway.
Personally - and having seen some of the subsequent postings - I tend to now believe that the previous offender was 'trolling' rather than being 100% serious (i.e. deliberated baiting people to stir a response). This is something that's (unfortunately) all too common on the newsgroups. Of course, the correct action in such a case is to ignore them - which would make me one of the worst offenders in terms of my response... <sigh> The resulting debate en-mass has been equally frustrating. That's the trouble with mass debating in public...! <grin>

Subject: 9210, Extra Extra
Dear all,
I'm writing this on a beautifully sunny day, lying on the grass.
I should be installing three data points, in fact I've driven for about an hour to get here, but its too nicer day for working!
Instead I'm going to turn my van around, go home, and have a few ice cold ciders...
------Re. 9210. Reply to Marc.-------
Thanks for your response Mark, under "About 9210" in control panel it says right at the bottom 4.13(6), which suggests its quite a recent version.
------How I use my 9210------
As far as 'how we use our 9210's' I only use mine as a telephone and for sending SMS's!
Other functionality I could suggest for it would be a. a doorstop, b. a lethal weapon for clubbing one's victims to death, c. get hold of the bloke who designed it and shuve it up his *CENSORED* and then *CENSORED* until his screams ring out across the valleys.
I can't deny I'm bitterly disappointed with it and shout obscenities at it every time it decides to ring (if I can actually hear it).
Did you know I was working in a school the other day, and some of the kids started to laugh at me, sniggering about the sheer size of my phone!
The slow CPU, lack of RAM, and horrible keyboard makes all but the most straight forward tasks laborious (and the find feature in Contacts is SO annoying).
The only good thing I can say about it is it makes me appreciate all the more how wonderful my 5mx is.
-------Extra, Extra-------
I don't no about anybody else but one of things I value most about the digest is when digestives mention a new app that I've never heard of, I note it down and check it out later.
There are so many 1000's of program for EPOC5 family that a good few treasures lie undiscovered.
And as now we have so many new MalayBook users joining our happy band of men and women, it might be useful to users new to EPOC to find out about these.
With this is mind I thought it would be fun and productive by pressing the extras button and list a few of my favourite things.
It would be great if others did the same, there might be a program out there that will change your life!
Program Name; Restart
Description; If your machine crashes it can be real pain to find a paper clip to perform a soft reset. This small utility restarts the machine with a touch of a software button.
Program Name; PsiDat
Description; Database junkies of the world will love this little beauty! If you've ever read Psions guide to programming in OPL you'll know that there's a great section on creating a database in OPL, which includes SQL commands and everything. This program is a GUI for writing databases in the pure form. Fantastic.
Program Name; TTContact
Description; First rate contact manager, you'll never lose a deal again.
Program Name; Ocean
Description; This appeals to the romantic in me. Basically it tells you what the tide is doing, its nice sometimes when I'm far from the sea to know what its doing.
--------Censorship---------
Any chance of censoring messages that begin with "Hmmmmm"?
Or 3 page essays that begin "well actually if you look at ball danglers charter of 1867, it says in on page 378, paragraph 3, that the jingle jangle islands copyright laws state blah blah blah blah....".
Cheers,

It has viewers for these files, just like my SonyEricsson P800.
<< Question: Why does my 5mx pro refuse to copy files to the D volume on the grounds that the batteries are to weak, even when it's plugged into the mains? >>
Probably because it doesn't realise that it's connected to mains. Your could try a soft-reset and, when that fails, a hard-reset after having made a full backup. When the hard-reset fails, it means a repair.

Subject: RE: SonyEricsson P800 - First impressions
Dear Koi Hin,
<< As someone who is considering along the same lines, I am interested in knowing if you see the P800 as being capable of and replacing your Revo? >>
The SonyEricsson P800 is in the process of becoming a replacement for my Revo. I mainly use my Revo for its Agenda and Contacts applications and as a note taker for which I use a Data file. Word and Sheet are rarely used and the only third-party application I regularly use on it is EpocSync and ABP.
I've now transferred my Contacts data to the P800 plus my current appointments and to-dos. As can't synchronise Calendar on the P800 with Agenda on one of the Psions (using something like EpocSync) it means that the P800 will take over all diary functions. The same applies to Contacts. Of course, I can beam appointments, to-dos and contacts between the two. However, I'm bound to forget to do that so that the two become out of synch.
It look that the P800 will also be fine for note taking. I'm still having trouble with the handwriting recognition and get too many error for comfort. Still, I've bought the P800 - it's not an inexpensive device - so that I'm definitely going to *use* the thing. Meaning that I currently accept the error rate and do my best to reduce it by practising. Picking one of the Psions for note taking won't make handwriting recognition's learning curve any shallower.
Which leaves ABP and personal finance management. I haven't checked whether there's such an application already available for the P800. ABP has more functions that I strictly need so that a simpler tool will do.
In other words, I'm not there yet but am quietly confident that the P800 will take over the general day to day PDA tasks from my Psions.

Re.: Censorship - In general I agree with you and indeed it took some debate before we decided to put a stop to this particular discussion. It is the first time we did this and hopefully the last time too. I am sorry you don't agree, but I suppose we can't always agree with everybody on everything. Several people emailed me that they want this digest to stick with EPOC matters, and I tend to agree with them. There are more than enough possibillities on the wider web to discuss any topic you want. I trust that all those that don't agree with our decision will still continue to read the digest. See further Michael's message in the last digest.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting - Thanks for the settings, passed them on straight away.
Best regards,
