The problem here is not that the digest itself will be spammed but that when subscribing to Yahoo Groups you automatically give your consent to Yahoo and its partnering RBOC to share the subscribers Email adresses with their business partners
As you have given your consent , you will get LOTS of ISCE ( Indirectly Solicited Commercial Email ) and your ISP will pass that straight on to your mailbox as it is not sent through open relaya/proxies and is covered by their peering agreements
Both RBOC's and cable internet providers now go to great lenghts to prevent ISCE from being caught by spam filters
In short , you have to filter behind the local firewall ( i.e the one that sits in your adsl modem/router or your local machine )
We use SpamAssasin - behind our local firewall - on our faculty network wich flags incoming messages as spam and either drops them in a mailbox on the server or passes them on to the client machine
I did experience a very sharp increase in spam/ISCE after subscribing to the zaurus mailinglists hosted on Yahoo Groups , consequently the lists have been moved to .sf.net with on-site mirrors planned for this summer
The digest or mailing list itself will not be affected !

Which leaves ABP and personal finance management. I haven't checked whether there's such an application already available for the P800. ABP has more functions that I strictly need so that a simpler tool will do.

Malcolm Bryant, author of the Exellent ABP for ER5, also made a Java (scaled down) version that runs on the P800:

Jabp (Just Another Banking Program) is an experiment - the objective has been to write a simple and free financial program which runs on Symbian OS (of course), IPAQ, Sharp Zaurus, Windows, Linux and Unix. You can exchange your data files seamlessly between different platforms. And of course Jabp will exchange data with Microsoft Money and Intuit Quicken. Oh, and did we say that it runs on the Sony Ericsson P800 superphone? Jabp isn't intended to be as fully featured as our well-established and award-winning ABP.

Whatever you consider to be the legal, political, or moral implications, whenever a piece of information is available to the public, it's surely public information...

My dismissal of that decision is that it makes no sense, not because of any legal system. And these differences bear little relation to what "model" it's based on - we have two different legal systems within Britain, which regularly come up with differing perspectives.

Maybe so, I can't really speak for the sensitivities of the French. But I would see it as akin to "Limey" (as some of our "Yank" friends still call us) or "Pom" (as some of our "Kiwi" friends call us).

Subject: New mobile phone for MC218 - your advice?
Hello list,
I am offered a phone upgrade. So far I was a happy user of the Siemens S25. My options are:
1) Sonyericsson T68i (Triband, no GPRS)
2) Nokia 6310i (GPRS, Bluetooth, Triband)
3) Nokia 3510i (GPRS, MMS)
4) Siemens C55
5) Siemens S45i
6) Siemens ME45 GPRS
Important points for me are seamless cooperation with my MC218/Psion 5mx: infrared connection, email and www connections (built in modem is a must), cooperation with phoneman, besides the usual mobile criteria robustness, long on-times, good connections etc.
How are your experiences? Which phone would you select?

A copy is on the way with another message!
I'm working on a new release with an easier setup procedure (the current one requires you to edit the opl file, make your changes and then retranslate
it; the new one will store its settings inside an ini file like EpoClock does), and I will send it as soon as it's a little more reliable ;-)
By the way, here it is a short description of what MyStartup does: it's a little macro to be set as "macro at switch on" in Macro5; when you turn your Epoc ER5 device on the first time in the day, it can show a user defined wallpaper (also play a sound if you like), then a window with the owner information, the time and a battery gauge; you hit a key and you're back to the system screen, or you can define a file to be automatically launched (e.g. your Agenda) or you can also set a maximum of 10 files to be checked and eventually baked-up to your CF card (if they have been modified from the previous backup)

Between Scroller, EpoClock and the FANTASTIC SaveMail, Sergio has really done a lot for the EPOC user community!

>>Michael and the rest of the Epoc Digest Team, Thank you very much for your efforts. You guys did give those contributors ample advice and time to mend their ways. But to to avail. So you did what you had to do to maintain order in this digest.<<
As one of the people who responded to the initial ignorant remark, I find the attitude displayed in your message (and others) somewhat disappointing. It seems that many people feel that it's okay for someone to make bigoted, racist or prejudiced remarks, but as soon as anyone objects, as several of us did, then the we are accused of going '...off topic...' or are told '...to mend our ways...'. As far as I can see, this amounts to a bigot's charter; say what you like, because no-one is going to (or dares) object. I'm all for free speech, but there limits. However, I do agree with Gary on one point, and that is regarding how the Epoc Digest Team have responded. I just hope that this sort of issue does not arise again, and that "censure" or "censorship" will not be required in the future.

Saj, I take it your music files are on D, and it is the green playlist icon (we'd better not say what it is a picture of, lest we be ***censored***
<BG>)which keeps reappearing on C? If you cut and paste this icon to D, and open EPlayM *only* via this icon in D, then I think it will stay in D.
However, if you commence playing by tapping on a track in the music folder, or via the Extras Bar, then the icon seems to reappear in C...

I read an article in The Sunday Times recently which suggested that WMA files reproduce near-CD quality at 64kpbs, while the corresponding MP3 figure is 128kpbs. I have a small portable MP3 player (Thomson Lyra), and tried, but in vain, to get it to play WMA files, though Thomson advise me that it should be possible. Are you saying that EPlayM on a Psion supports WMA files? If so, that's interesting, even though I don't really think one gets that much
quality on the Psion in either event...

Re.: Censorship - Well, as explained before, we only censored one digest which was enough to stop the discussion. Let's not continue to discuss censorship in general. If there is no need we will not use it. As to unsubscribing, we never unsubscribed anyone until now, and don't plan to do so either. In theory however we can stop people from subscribing, just as the moderators in a Yahoo group are able to do so as well. As to Vlad, we are all capable to decide for ourselves, but it is the task of the operators to keep the digest to the EPOC contents and to avoid unnecessary disagreements.

It just shouldn't allow you to use both at the same time...
(It's supposed to give you an 'in use' message and stop the attempt)
All the data, or just the email directory structure?
It's more likely that the corruption was caused by low voltages.
(Both IRDa and RS232 takes a lot of power)

Yank is a derogatory of Yankee, and yes, those of my american friends I've asked confirm that they would consider it an insult.
Canuk is not a word I'm familiar with, but Canuck is slang for Canadian, yes...
(Websters also lists it as 'A small or medium-sized hardy horse, common in Canada)
Wordnet lists it as 'US Slang for Canadians in general and French-Canadians in particular'...
I guess those French-Canadians at least must be of a hardy stock, then...
Limey...
That one I found in Wordnet full Thesaurus...
'A man of English descent', with a reference to John Bull...
Now, if anyone knew the origin of the word we might be able to say whether or not it is insulting...
While you're at it, why not mention Kiwis?
(People from New Zealand and a fruit I stay away from on the grounds that it's impossible to stop after just one or two :-)
Or Redskin?
(American indians, or me after having been out in the sun all day. I never tan, only burn...)
Wetbacks?
(Mexicans who got into America illegally by swimming a certain river, or so I heard on Discovery Channel)
In the future, can we please stay away from (possibly) insulting names?

Yes indeed David, it sleeps using very little battery power, at a guess my over 1 yr old heavily used battery gives me 2 hrs normal use; sleep mode uses less than 5% overnight. I only shut down and restart when the computer starts misbehaving, on average once every week or two.
Also OT, I saw last week a man at the pub pull out one of those swivel-screen Toshiba laptops. Amazing to see how discreet and natural it was for use on a pub table, a full-on Windows computer like an A4 pad of paper and a biro. I understand that the latest version of mac OS 10 includes full pen-interaction stuff, so maybe they're heading that way too?
Finally, not so OT, a full page colour advert for NetPad on the back of "Pen Computing" magazine this month.

When that's the case you don't have much trust in the Digest being self-regulatory. That nobody will rise up and say "Gentleman, that's enough - take it off-Digest".
<< I'm sure many people would blame us for that >>
What the EPOC Digest Team can be blamed for is posting a message in issue no. 227 telling us that the discussion is now closed while still including eight messages on that same subject in the same issue. In other words, the discussion is closed but it's not closed yet - an invitation to continue as before.
What you can't be blamed for is putting a stop to things that start to get out of hand. The EPOC Digest Team has final editorial control - Use it!! - No need to be squeamish about it. You're not going to run an 800 subscriber digest on the basis of a doe-eyed "Oooooooh - Let's be friends" attitude as you'll be run over.

Dear Phil,
<< But I disagree with censorship whenever and wherever met. It means someone else is deciding what I should read even if I disagree with them ... >>
The EPOC Digest is an electronic newsletter, distributed by e-mail, which has 99% of copy written by the subscribers themselves. I therefore consider it quite normal that the EPOC Digest Team has some form of editorial control on what's finally put into Digest issues. Isn't it the New York Times that has "Any news fit to print" on its masthead? Well ... when the NYT doesn't simply print any news that comes in, the EPOC Digest Team doesn't have to accept any message that's submitted. The Digest has a few guidelines and what fits these guidelines is posted. When that's censorship I can say that all news media are censored - newspapers, magazines, TV and radio programs. It's all very well to say that you want to decide on what you read. Pick a newspaper, however, and what you read has been decided on for you - which new stories are covered - the prominence they're given - the length of the articles - their tone, etc. by the newspaper's editors. I therefore don't see any reason to cry "Censorship" when the EPOC Digest Team decides that a particular exchange is now closed. Just as I don't see any reason to cry "Racism" when an Englishman verbally attacks a Frenchman.

Subject: Re: Multiple Psion Devices
Dear Gary,
<< Just out of curiosity (because I have always owned only 1 Psion at a time), do you keep all these divices synchronized? If so, how do you do it? >>
Synchronisation isn't a daily job for me. First, because I don't synchronise with a desktop PIM like Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Organiser at home. I'm single and don't need to keep family members informed of my time planning. Secondly, there's no question of synchronising with Novell GroupWise at the office as the company is Palm-only and doesn't accept the installation of PDA support software other than what's supplied with the Palm models. That I paid for my Psions out of my own pocket and would do the same for the synchronisation software had no effect. Result is that I have to do some double bookkeeping (Agenda - GroupWise) which has now become almost second nature.
This means that I only 'synchronise' when I change Psion. This is easy for the Revo as the only data I transfer are the Contacts and Agenda files plus the ABP file with my personal finance details (using EpocSync). It's also fairly easy for the Series 5mx, Ericsson MC218 and Series 7 as I transfer the complete contents of the C-drive and move the CF card from the one to the other. The Series 5 has been retired but can be brought back into active service when need be. I've kept EPOC Release 3 versions of some of the application I use. Most of the other applications can be used on EPOC Release 3 as well as EPOC Release 5 so that there's no problem with these.
My new SonyEricsson P800 has created a different situation. First, because the synchronisation and backup software that's supplied with it demands Windows ME/200/XP while my home PC is currently running Windows '98. I've thought about getting a second-hand copy of Windows ME but understand that it's a half-hearted attempt at improving '98. I'm therefore thinking about changing to Windows XP but I'll have to check whether my home PC meets its minimum hardware requirements. I've currently transferred my contact details, to-dos and my diary for 2002 and 2003 from the Psion to the P800. Meaning that the P800 is now the device I use for my time and contact management and that the Revo is all but retired.

Fine, but let's compare the operating systems then. And not speculate whether owning a Psion implies a (strong) preference for certain desktop/laptop operating systems. The choice of desktop/laptop operating system can be determined by other factors. Like a company supplied laptop having the company standard operating system and application on it.
<< I could never recommend ER5 for somebody who wants to view movies in color ... >>
The limitation isn't in EPOC Release 5 but in most of the hardware it's running on. Which is probably the reason why there's no AVI or RealVideo player as the bulk of ER5 machines are formed by the Revo and Series 5 models. You may need a netBook or netPad because they have the processor grunt, memory capacity and colour screens to make an AVI player a viable proposition.

Subject: CF error (Perhaps)
Dear All,
A fortnight ago I moved from a 5mx to a new and achingly wonderful Malay Netbook. I also have a 128Mb LEXAR Compact flash card in the CF bay.
And now the problem starts:
Since putting the CF card in the NetBook, it normally takes a few attempts before the it recognises that a CF has even been inserted. (CF was fine in 5mx)
Once it is recognised, there is no guarantee that when I go back to the NetBook a few hours later that it will still be accessible.
Often at switch on, I'm greeted with this:
Programme Closed - AppArcServerThread - E32 User - Cbase - Reason 21
When the above happens and I then try to view the D disk, the Psion says it's Corrupt. I pull it out, put it back in a few times (fnaaaar fnaaaaar) and everything is AOK again.
Christopher Marwood was getting the same error message, and Trygve replied with this advice:
I think I know this one....
I'm betting that you have one or more OPX files or something on the D: disk, and these are in use....
Copy the files over to C:, reset the machine, then delete them from D:
This should clear it up... (May be other files too... )
I tried the above - I'm still getting the error message.
I'm now trying putting a bit of paper in the tray, so pushing the card harder into the NetBook. Even with the paper in though, the slightest pressure to open the slide-out-tray-thing will disconnect the D disk. (Damn, drat and Doh!)
Can someone (please) toss me a frickin' bone here?
Having put all my thoughts down on paper it now seems like a hardware problem. Bugger. Has anyone returned a NetBook to SitaShop? Were they
OK - Were they reluctant to help out?
Humph.
Here endeth the lesson.

Subject: 3 great Psion apps
I liked/loved Will Green’s email and suggestion. So – when my D Disk is accessible - my Extras favourites are:
FileSwitch – a teeny-weeny little app that lets you Alt+Tab between running programs, using Ctrl+Space. (Freeware)
StartUp – *Easy* batch loading of progs (Freeware) (I don’t have Macro 5 yet, so I don’t know if StartUp will be replaced by a groovy Macro 5 macro…)
Chain Reaction – Neuon’s super-fabbo fast-moving and v.unpredictable strategy game. (Fairly uncrippled Shareware) (Note to self – Send nice man money to say thanks & get more levels….)

Dear Rolf
I had a demonstration of the P800 in a shop and the salesman gave me a trick for this:
Use small letters (not BIG).
The screen is divided in 3 parts:
- the bottom of the screen gives small letters
- the middel gives big letters
- the top is for numbers
A line from left to right is for space.
Right to left line removes one step back.
Please let us know if you get one single error from now ! (before you look on the examples in the manual, of course) ;-)
