Well, some of us, romantics or not actually need to know what the tide is doing. In fact, yesterday evening I looked out through my portlight and noticed a couple of gentlemen who had failed to take the tide into account. Their yacht was firmly stuck on the mud. As she was only 20 odd yards away, I tried to winch her off with a line connected to her main halyard (to heel her and reduce her draft), but it was too late. I didn't dare slip my mooring and try to pull her off using the engine, as she was a racing yacht with a very thin and spindly mast and I didn't want to risk damaging her rig. Thanks to Ocean, I could tell them that they had run aground just over an hour before low tide, so they would be stuck for a while.
After a chat, I went back to my book aboard the Naomi J. A while leater I realized that as they had just lauched, they probably didn't have any provisions so I paddled over with a thermos of tea and found them heeling at a most uncomfortable angle. We'd left the line from her masthead to Naomi's stern in place, and when the tide turned this held Naomi broadside to the tide so that she was gently tugging at the other yacht's masthead. I stayed aboard the grounded yacht and just over 2 hours after I'd first spotted her, we felt her stir. The three of us went to stand at her bows, shifting the weight to lift her rudder out of the mud, and Naomi, helped by the tide, pulled her off very gently.
A couple of hours ago I was reading the digest and heard a voice calling my name. I looked out and was surprised to see Billy Hatch who owns the moorings wearing waders and standing ankle deep six yards off Naomi's stern. We agreed that it might be prudent to move the mooring a litlle further out.
Now, back to some EPOC content... Those who have registered Ocean will know that it comes with a huge database of harmonic constants (the data needed to calculate the tide) for more than 1500 ports. In fact, the file is so big that it will not work with Ocean and it is suggested that you make your own selection. This is fine for those who only sail in a limited area and know the names of the local standard ports, but as the database is not very well organised, it's difficult for a long distance cruiser whithout local knowledge to figure out which he will be needing in a new area.
Last year I went through the whole database and compiled a file with only those standard ports that are in Europe or the Med. I also added all the Norwegian standard ports, most of which were not present. If any REGISTERED Ocean users would like this file, please e-mail me off list. If you only want the Norwegian ports which I have added from data found in the Norwegian tide tables, they can be found on Trygve's site.
PS. I'm not sure whether it would be illegal for me to give the large database to people who are not registered Ocean users. After all, the author has compiled the database from public information. It's difficult to see how anyone could hold copyright to the forces of nature. I don't think Einstein ever attempted to copyright E=MC²...

Is the green light next to the "Q" on the keyboard lit? If not, you either have a faulty power socket, or a faulty power supply. If it is lit, I have no suggestions other than what Rolf B wrote.
It's quite common for the S5(mx) machines to develop problems with the external power connector. There are three possible solutions:
1. Send it in for repair.
This is the only option if the machine is still in warranty, but can prove too expensive if it is not.
2. Attempt to resolder the connector yourself.
This should not be too difficult if you know your way around electronics and have experience soldering small items. However, in a couple of cases I have found that the socket itself was faulty, and I have no idea where one would get a replacement.
3. Ignore the problem and buy a POD docking station which comes with a PsiWin cable that connects the power via the RS-232. If you don't like the docking station, the cable can be used without it just like your original PsiWin cable. As far as I know, it isn't possible to buy this cable without the docking station. (Please someone prove me wrong, I want one more, but I don't want another docking station.)

3) Nokia 3510i (GPRS, MMS)
4) Siemens C55
5) Siemens S45i
6) Siemens ME45 GPRS
Sony Ericsson T68i does have GPRS, unless yours is a special version in your market. I would like to add it also has Bluetooth.
I went from using a Siemens S45 (main difference with Siemens S45i is that S45i has a built in mail client) to a Sony Ericsson T68i and am very happy with the phone as far as connectivity is concerned. It connects seamlessly through GPRS and HSCSD to my Revo and netBook. It would also seem the T68i gives somewhat higher speeds compared to my S45, although this is unscientific and it could be due to poor settings on my S45.

Hi Ulrich
For me, when replacing my Nokia 6310i, the choice came down to either a Siemens S55 or a Sony Ericsson T68i. Both are much smaller and lighter than the Nokia 6310i, both have colour screens, both offer GPRS, Infra red and Bluetooth and both are Tri band so may be used in the USA. I choose the Siemens S55, mainly because I could get the camera with it and I can take pictures and email them to those at home when I am abroad. (OK I know it's a gadget but occasionally it is useful ;-). Actually though I find the keys on the S55 to be a bit too small, otherwise it is OK. In summary I would suggest choosing between the T68i and S55, but I would strongly suggest trying out the feel of the phone, especially the keyboards (keybuttons- whatever) before buying.
Happy gadget hunting

I believe Limey originates from when the USA was being colonised (or invaded - depending on your point of view) by sail ships from the UK. To prevent the crews getting Scurvy (lack of vitamin C) the ships carried limes for the crew to eat on the voyage over.

Rolf
It is possible to synchronise your Psion with GroupWise if your company allows
you to do this to other PCs as well as Palm PDAs, assuming their policies
don't extend to you home PC. I support a number of remote Psion users this way
so they can minimise connection time, see below.
Synchronise GroupWise with another PC for example your home or portable PC:
Install GroupWise on your home/portable PC.
Use the GroupWise 'Hit The Road' option on your work PC which will create a
floppy disk with all the entries.
Use the floppy disk to update your home/portable PC.
Synchronise your home & Office PCs which is a standard GroupWise function, via
a dial up connection. (or just keep using 'Hit the Road')
Install GroupWise to Psion synchronisation software such as Linkwise on your
PC & synchronise whenever you wish.
The above works for diary & e-mail synchronisation using Linkwise (diary) &
eSync (e-mail).

The origin is that the early Brit seafarers took Limes and other citrus fruits on long sea voyages to counter scurvy. But how can the origin make it insulting or not...how does naming an American after the winnng faction in the civil war cause insult? How does naming the French after one of their dietary peculiarities cause insult? It's beyond me...

Hi Ulrich,
why don't you ask for money instead, if you are happy with the phone you have?
I can comment on the Siemens mobiles only:
Number four on your list (C55) does not have an infrared port. So, this one would be out.
As far as I know, the S45i and the ME45 are internally the same. The ME45 has a rugged casing, protecting against dust, shock and water. So, it will be more robust. However, it does also look that way. So, if you go for the looks, the S45i might be your choice.

You completely missed my point. I wasn't asking for an word for word breakdown to determine if their origin means they are an insult or not. What I meant was that 1 U.S. citizen may feel insulted by being refered to as a 'Yank' and another, not.
B.T.W: The term 'Limey' came from the fact that British sailors were given limes to prevent scurvy.

Whatever you consider to be the legal, political, or moral implications, whenever a piece of information is available to the public, it's surely public information...<<
There is currently a court case going on (in the UK I think) concerning what is hacking and what is not. Basically, a company put their latest quarterly figures on their webserver, but didn't announce them to the press and didn't put a link to the file on their website. However, an enterprising journalist managed to access the file by correctly guessing the name of the file, based on the names of other files used when announcing previous quarterly results; he then wrote an article in which he disclosed the results contained in this file. The company says he hacked their web server, as the information was not public, he says that because the information was already on a publically accessible server, it was technically public, and therefore he was not hacking. It depends on what you call publishing....

Can I merge many databases in One ? How ? and open it withthe silkscreen Icon ?
Thanks for your help.

Subject: Another Extra, Restart, A few files, The moving finger.
Dear all,
------Another Extra---------
I forgot a much loved game off my Extras Bar;
Name; Zheroes.
Description; I think the best game available for the Psion, and quite a recent addition. Runs on the Revo, 5mx, and in beautiful colour on the 7/nB/mB, free (last time I looked) from Neouns web site.
The game is basically Worms, but with Garden Snails. The cartoon graphics are absolutely superb, the best I've seen on the Psion to date.
You can play against the Psion or play against a human.
Very addictive, really good fun!
---------Restart---------
Answer to Eric (no doubt reading this sipping cocktails on Airlie Beach in beautiful Australia, lucky swine!).
As I understand it when you press Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K this merely restarts the 'shell' program, not the entire machine.
So, if for example, a program freezes (as does FreeNote for me) if you Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K when the shell comes back up again after the splash screen the program, eg FreeNote, will still be there, still frozen.
'Restart' however restarts the entire machine, dumping all programs and unsaved file from its Ram.
A note on Restart, it is available as part of Essential Disc Utilities suite of software for a price, or free on its own.
------A few files---------
I've uploaded to my web site a couple of new files.
The first, Hancock Data file (EPOC5 data format). This has got details of all Tony Hancock's Half Hours and films.
The second, my much worked on Power Base Invoicing, Contact Management, and Stock Control system. This includes sample data.
Both available at www.carryoncabling.co.uk/psion (as well as my Sherlock file).
------The moving finger-------
I have recently moved from a young and vibrant 29, to an old and crusty 30.
I have the Terry Wogan sweatshirt to prove the fact.
It may be but I'm losing touch with buzz words (as well as reality), one minute ago every kept talking about Smoking Guns, and now have moved on to 'Pushing the envelope'.
What on earth does this mean?
I propose that the first person to use such a buzz word on the digest in a serious context should be stripped naked and whipped through the streets of London.
Not unreasonable?
(I must be getting old as all I seem to do is moan these days)

Will.

From: Philip S. Adkins Potter
Subject: Editorial Freedon vs Censorship (for Rolf B.).
Hi Rolf,
I think we're talking at cross purposes.
The Digest is a newsletter with a (commercially!) modest circulation and a low enough input that all messages/letters/puffs/disagreements can be posted without making the Digest unwieldy. A newspaper editorial team is usually more concerned with what to put in as there is usually vastly more competing for space than there is space available.
Certainly that can be called censorship but I prefer to call it editorial control and it often is. But this digest doesn't need that, thank goodness!
Here some believe that certain posts need "moderating" - censoring in plainer words. Some don't know which way to jump on this issue. Others may think it irrelevant. And still others may think trivial. I disagree.
But disagreement *is* fundamental to human society.
And it is fundamental to this Digest too. There is much disagreement on this Digest and it is important to me that this "freedom of speech" thing allows us to express ourselves. I don't like silly posts, whether jingoist, racist or just plain nasty but censoring them implies censoring me if my posts are considered jingoist, racist or just plain nasty.
That is why so many oppose censorship of any description. If I don't know your opinions how can I agree or disagree with you? If my opinion is censored then so might the reasons be - and there might be no freely published guidelines giving censorship criteria, they're censored too.
And who decides?
This may seem silly but it is not. The freedom to read and write without someone else deciding what should be read or written is very important, perhaps the most important principle in human society.
I'm not criticising the motives of any of *our* editorial team, they do a fine job under sometimes difficult conditions. And I'm not imputing to them approval of censorship. And I doubt that their well-intended actions will materially harm anyone.
I just disagree.
Take care,
Phil.

My understanding is that Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K kills the "frozen" app you're in, while Restart does a soft reset. I have 2 apps installed which, on the rare occasion, are very useful:
1. ResetPlus, which does a soft reset.

Subject: New mobile phone, SpellX, New porduction 5MX,
Answer to: Ulrich Hornstein
Re.: New mobile phone - i use the 6310i for almost a year with my S7 and 5MX without any problem. It is robust, the battery lasts a long time and I use it with GPRS in the UK, Europe and Israel (with a local SIM card). However, besides Bluetooth it does not have the newer options like colour screen, photos, etc.

Re. SpellX - I use an old macro called Switchdico to switch between different language spellcheckers. I received the French, Dutch and German files from other users. How does SpellX work, where did you get the files and where can you get the program ?

Re. New porduction 5MX - I picked up the following message from the German Psion digest :
Psion Serie 5mx wird wiederbelebt
Das Consumergeschäft von Psion, das im Juli 2001 eingestellt wurde, steht möglicherweise vor einer Neuauflage. Das authorisierte Psion-Service-Center POS Ltd. wird voraussichtlich eine Neuproduktion des Tastaturorganizers Psion Serie 5mx starten.
weitere infos unter...
http://www.mobile2day.de/news/news_details.html?nd_ref=1603
It says that POS Ltd. might start a new production of the 5MX with further details on the mentioned website. As I am on holiday I can't verify the website but thought it would interest the readers here. Somehow this 5MX does not want to die <G>.

I use a s35i - I hate the design and almost everything else about it but it has worked perfectly with my MXpro. I'm told the next series are identical afa the ir goes. Have a look at the Siemens page (http://www.my-siemens.com/) for full tech-data and a possibility to compare features online. *I* would chose the Safari (ME45) (is this e+? what do they offer them for now?), it seems to meet all your requirements, including robustness. Or vait for the SL55.

U might of thought it came from the fact that British'd be pale, but no: ex (British?) Marines' habit of drinking lime juice at sea as anti-scorbutic; probably of 19th ct US or Australian origin - "the" Partridge says.
Otherwise, imo an insult is often a matter of context and tone rather than vocabulary and content - imo, certainly in the case at hand, and see below...

Indeed... Emmm, well, call it self-restraint, personal allegiance, etc. A long topic - typically off-topic, though ;-)
And: no one "cried" - a few psionauts made a point.

Sure, and I do know that the occasional off-topic topic is okay & I
certainly understand your point. I seem unable to make mine, though. I'll
try again (ok, last time... ;-) from another perspective: while the silly remark was just obscure at worst and mildly amusing at best, I found the reactions to it somewhat disturbing... And thank you again for your efforts, all of you!

Us Aussies probably won't care if you did insult New Zealanders (The kiwi is a flightless bird found only in New Zealand.) Inhabitants of New Zealand may however care. But
none of these items are really on the topic of Psion, are they?

A French chef and his English wife used to own and run my favourite French restaurant in Australia. They named it "The Lazy Frog". I do recall some
US friends telling me they didn't think that name would be acceptable in
the USA (that surprised me). Regular customers were always finding
reclining or otherwise depictions of frogs with which to decorate the premises, which when it closed had over a hundred such items (the
restaurant gave them away to their regular customers over their last week
or so).

>Since putting the CF card in the NetBook, it normally takes a few attempts before the it recognises that a CF has even been inserted. (CF was fine in 5mx)
There is a switch on the NetBook motherboard that registers whether the
"door" of the CF tray has actually closed (just like in the 5mx). This
switch is depressed by a piece of bent metal formed from the floor of the tray. The actual play in the switch and tray is very small, and can easily
be just a little too sensitive.
In my Psion 7, the tray actually came out, due to the bend in the metal
being slightly insufficient to catch the detent correctly, so when I had
the same switch problem, I just bent the metal the very slightest amount further out (only takes a touch). Probably best to see if someone local to you has experience in doing this, given freight costs to Sita. It really
is a minor adjustment.

In addition to the OPX files, you need the Recognisers on the C drive. Normally they would install on C, but you can end up with them on D if you specify D when doing some installs. Once you get this straightened up, the problem is gone.
>I'm now trying putting a bit of paper in the tray, so pushing the card

It is the door switch, just like I said.

Subject: Faxing and Homepage
I am still trying to send a fax using my long distance phonecard and an mBook. (I do not have a long distance company only these cards.) Using the advice I received from the Digest, setup a new dialling location. That part seemed to work... sort of. The "Pin" for my type card is an 11 digit number. The Dialling program appears to hold less than 11 numbers, so I get an incorrect pin number response from the mechanial person. Is there anyway to send the full 11pin numbers using Dialling or anything else?
Frustration set in.. so... again searching the mBook Help file (Fn + help) read about using the telephone to dial a fax machine then sending an immediated fax. Plugging the mBook and the phone into the same phoneline and using the phone's speakerphone, was able to dial the required three 11 digit numbers using the phone handset. Heard the receiving fax start to talk, jumped to the Psion and did the immediate fax. Worked!! I'm happy that by standing on one foot and spinning I can send a fax, but I'd like to know if there is anyway to do it all from the mBook using Dialling or something else?
On a slightly different topic, I sucessfully connected the mBook to my internet service. Didn't realize I had been connecting on earlier attempts because I was getting an error msg. The error msg was the browser trying to connect to the "My Schoolbook Home" page. So the question is, can I change the Homepage on my mBook/Opera? The homepage is located on the Z drive, so I'm not hopeful.

Subject: Big emails on 9210, more RAM please
Ashley wrote in reply to Will Green:
<You need to run email on the Memory card: get yourself a big MMC>
I don't think this will solve Will's problem. He was complaining about the way the Email app freezes when trying to open large emails. This is not down to a lack of internal flash memory, more it's a combination of a relatively slow CPU trying to cope with opening a large email whilst working with a limited amount of executable SD-RAM. You could stuff a 128Mb or even a 256Mb MMC in it - but this would not solve the problem as it's not related to overall availability of flash memory. I have a 128Mb MMC inserted in my 9210 and I still have Will's problem on my own machine.
Will made me laugh reading his reasons why he doesn't like his 9210 - thanks Will, most entertaining! My thoughts are - it could have been soooo much better with just a bit more RAM and a slightly faster CPU. My real gripe is it has the fantastic EPOC multitasking O/S (albeit ER6) but just try opening multiple apps on the top left hand task bar and see how far you can get. I got 4 open apps once before getting "out of memory" messages (that was a good day!) If it had just been given 16Mb RAM instead of 8 (of which a large proportion is devoured by essential tasks like keeping the Telephone app open anyway) then that open tasks list could be much much longer and the machine would function much more like a Psion 5mx - i.e. with true multitasking possible. The available amount of RAM is just too limited to do this effectively.
