I too used to have this problem with my 6210e (Orange version of 6210i) - the cause was a loose-fitting battery. The fix is to stick a small band of soft plastic on the inside of the battery case, which stops the battery from moving about. My "repair" was effected by Rob Gates of R. Gates Communications in Burwell Cambs (+44(0)1638742203) for anyone in the UK who wants the fix.

Thanks for the information.

I've been working in stages. The first one was to get agenda and contacts transferred, the second to get the P800 linked up to my home PC, the third to get e-mail and Web up and running and the fourth to look for additional tools. I'm now at a point that I can report on my experiences with stages two and three which I'll post on the Digest in a few days.

This is not quite correct, if you have ohter devices which speak the IrOBEX protocol for vCard exchange. Contacts can easyly read and create vCard records in a file or via IRDA and

exchange the information with Palms, Phones, ...

But I agree on the other points you mention (multiple files, searching, ...)

Andy,

>It would be interesting to have an idiots guide on how to run some of the java apps that are available for the Psion. I think that they run under eshell.exe, but that is where my guesswork ends. It will all be too obvious to you Marcus, but us mere mortals may need some help <BG>

Java apps can be started in several ways on the Psion:

1.) Use ESHELL.EXE and type in "java -cp <classpath> MyClass <any args>".

2.) Tap on the .class file. This is only suitable, if the program is a really simple app with no command line args or funny classpath settings. Some apps come with a "starter" class that sets

up the environment for the big application and starts it.

3.) Create an EPOC application from the java app. This involves an .aif and an .app file with caption and icon for the Extras bar, a .txt file with the command line to java.exe, and of course the java app itself as a bunch of classes or a jar file.

(1) and (2) can be made easier: You can put class files and jars in special directories (?:\System\java\classes, ?:\System\java\ext) so that they can be accessed from java.exe

without setting the classpath. This is useful for command line utilities and shared Java libraries.

Creating a (dummy) file named C:\System\java\console lets every java program writing to

System.out or System.err open a console window. This is mostly meant for debugging or

commad line stuff. Without the dummy file, nothing is printed out, only GUI components are visible.

Coming back to LPR (and to a second project, an SMTP proxy which will allow access to mail

servers with SMTP authentication from the standard Email application). These will come in a SIS file and will follow option (3) outlined above. Be patient...

Subject: RE: Moving from S5 to S5MX

Hi Gilles,

I also have moved from the 5 to the 5mx and have the 5 now as a backup machine.

I still use the "Data" application, as I had four data files and was too lazy to move everything over to contacts. Also, I have heard some comments that were not too enthusiastic about the "Contacts" application. It probably will be of benefit if you work with the Contacts in Outlook and want to synchronize back and forth. There was a conversion utility around that would allow to transfer data from "Data" to "Contacts" (http://user.itl.net/~nijel/Psion5/Psion5ConvertData.htm).

As said, I stayed with "Data". The only really disturbing thing was the need to open the "Extras" menu to get to the data files. I fixed that by changing the shell.ini with the "RMRText" editor, following the instructions from Alan in Digest #012 (09-Jun-02).

You could merge your data files - look in File/More/Merge in ... in the data application. It must have had a reason that you kept them separate?

I your PS you ask for file structures for conversion purposes. All files I had transferred without problems from the 5 to the 5mx. So, there was no need to convert anything. I seem to remember the OPL programmers reference book containing this kind of information?

Greetings

Karsten.

Dear friends

Just a little note to let you know that MyStartup for Macro5 v1.00 is ready to be downloaded from:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bridge/1492/

I also updated Scroller to v1.11 (minor fixes and a new shortcut)

<<

MyStartup is a small macro designed to be set as a "macro at switch on"

in Macro5; when you turn your Epoc ER5 device on the first time in the

day, MyStartup can show a user defined wallpaper (also play a sound, if

you like), then a window with your owner information, the time and a battery gauge; you hit a key and you're back to the system screen, or

you can define a file to be automatically launched (e.g. your Agenda file); you can also set a maximum of 10 files to be checked and, if needed (if they have been modified from the previous backup), baked-up to any user defined folder (better to a CF Card, to save them in case of any unlucky loss of power etc.)

Let me know ;-)

Subject: Restart, Powerbase help file, tip, Sheet help

Dear all,

If your a Shropshire lad as I am, the standard greeting to another is as follows;

"How you doin"?

and the correct response should be;

"Not to baaaaaaaad".

This little opening gambit should see you well and pass you as one of us in any Shropshire pub.

I only point this out as I'm in search of opening line better than 'Dear all' and try to compete with 'Howde', but I think I'm going to fail hopelessly!

So;

How you doin?

-------Restart, response to Itamar------

Actually, "on the list of applications running, highlighting a program and pressing Ctrl+Shift-E lets you kill the program."*

No need to go to System screen to get to the .app file for the program. So there!

But I take your point, killing applications isn't a good example of Restart's usage. Perhaps a better one would be when Psiwin doesn't pick up Psion and only a soft restart will do?

------Powerbase help file, response to Andy-------

"Your Powerbase file is a work of genius".

I blush with modesty!

It is a bit ruff at the edges in some places (eg. printing an Invoice doesn't always match the screen), but I think a help file on it is a great idea.

In the creation of it, it will also help me think through some of the weak areas in the database.

I'll post to the digest when the help file is finished, and the first revision of the database complete.

-----Cunning tip-------

This tip isn't mine, I picked it up somewhere while playing on internet, can't remember where though.

*Stolen from the same tip sheet.

"Ever noticed that the only way to cancel an alarm on your Psion once it's gone off is manual intervention (i.e. press the 'Cancel' option)?  Wouldn't it be handy if you could set alarms so that they only ever sounded once - and didn't repeat for ever...  Well you can:-  The solution is to set the alarm you want to hear as per normal.  Then set a second SILENT alarm for 1 minute (or whenever) after the 1st alarm has sounded - it will cancel the sound of the first alarm (at least until you next get around to pressing the cancel key)."

------Sheet help------

I'd really like to get to grips with Sheet.

Other than a few standard sums and basic calculation commands, thats my lot.

I want a go at LOOKUPS, RADIONS, & all the other functions that I really haven't a clue what they mean and how to use them.

I been feeling for some time that this is a really (forgive me) 'powerful' feature in ER5 that I'm missing out on!

Any one know of a tutorial on a web set or something similar?

Psionara,

Will.

Subject: SonyEricsson MP3 player (HPM-10)

It sorta complements my 20Gb Archos.  (Fantastic bit of kit - if anyone has one, and doesn’t have the freeware Rockbox o/s, go here:  http://rockbox.haxx.se/ )  This improves it a thousand times.  (Seriously.)

A 128mb Multi Media Card brings the capacity right up, although that will costs about £70UK from Ebay.  (I can’t remember how much I paid, but it was much cheaper than the shops.)

You may need to get the latest flash software upgrade from an approved SonyEricsson supplier (eg some Carphone Warehouses in the UK)  In the first year of ownership, this is free.  After that it’s £30UK, I think.

It also comes with a PC parallel (printer) MMC reader.  Works very well.

It’s teeny-weeny.

Using it in the E drive bay of a NetBook or S7 with a PC card adaptor looks like a gooooood idea.

My two bitches are:

1)  It loses the connection WAY TOO EASILY!  With hindsight (and just because of this) I wouldn’t buy one – It can be playing and if the contacts are at all dirty the slightest bit of pressure can cause it to disconnect.  This is an almost crippling design flaw.  I’m not the only person to report this, but equally it’s not a 100% universal complaint.

Also:

2)  You can’t do anything else while using the phone.  (Sort through phone lists, play solitaire/battleships etc.)

Note:   Previous software versions allowed you to do other stuff on the phone while listening to mp3s.  The latest version that I got on my phone blocked this capability for no reason.  This is a real pain, and it looks like a SonyEricsson decision that makes NO sense….  Petty dominating *bar-stewards*!

In conclusion – it’s brilliant apart from the flakey (unreliable) connection.  If you want it to be portable and usable you need to have pockets in which it will receive no jolting.  (Loose shirt pocket would prob be OK.)

Apologies that this offtopic, but hopefully it will appeal to the techy geek in all of us!

Hi Jim,

This is not a bug, you just need to tell your Psion to sort on more letters. To do this in your database select Tools - Change labels... <Ctrl+L>. Now choose the label(s) you want to sort and select Edit... - choose Options... and increase the number of characters to use in the sorting.

Hi Jim (Watson~Gove),

I expect there will be many replies but here is mine.

It's not a bug but a silly piece of design. In Data the menu item "Tools/Change Labels/Edit/Options" lets you specify how many characters to use when sorting entries. Obvious it ain't but it's there and defaults to 1. If it were under "Sort by label" it would make more sense.

Good luck,

Dear Psion-buddies,

I have a generally flakey (unreliable) IR connection.

     Web or email access

     via Infrared

     and a T68.

When trying to get online, web or email would say they were connecting but they lie, they lie!  (ie my phone *wasn't* dialing.)

So I went to the System screen and tried to switch on IR through "Link to desktop", I get "Access Denied" or "Initialisation Failed" or similar.

Then I reset - Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K.  This didn't work, so I reset with a sharp point near backup battery.  Now it would allow IR access.

(Should the InfraRed port activate automatically when Email or Web needs it for a mobile modem, or do I need to set it through Ctrl+L?)

Many thanks to everyone who puts in their time to keep this Digest as useful as it is.

Oh and to Keith, Trygve and others - Happy cycling to you to.  I do a daily 4 miles in, 4 miles back on my push bike.  It's good fun taking on the London traffic - So far I haven't lost (too badly)...

Yes via /menu/File/More/MergeIn
