Subject: P800 & Sony Memory Duo

To Kevin Thorne, Koi Hin & Rolf Brunsting et al,

Expansys (www.expansys.com) have 64Mb duo's available, but don't rush out tobuy one yet; Sony now have the 128Mb version in production, though they arein

short supply (of course!). I am awaiting confirmation of an order for acou$120 each from a retailer in Hong Kong; he says he should have them by theend of the month.

I also have a P800, but am not honestly able to exploit it to the extentthat

I would like. Although SonyEricsson have now released a Windoze 98 versionof

the synchronisation software (which WILL install and work correctly if youpersevere!), I don't tend to use a PC and don't have M$ Office 2000 anyway.I

cannot test the GSM data connectivity of the phone either, as data and faxservices are not available to subscribers in Saudi Arabia - with theexception

of roamers from abroad.

I can confirm that the transfer of address books from EPOC contacts and aEricsson R520M work perfectly. If somebody is using iContacts or similar -or

anything else that produces vCard files - then piBeam will transfer thefilesalso (standard EPOC IR Send/Receive does not work)

A potential 'killer app' for the device is MobiPocket Pro 3.0, which willallow a travelling exec or similar to store and review - though NOT modify -a

vast array of M$ Office document formats beyond that of the built-in/extraviewers. Unfortunately, this also needs Office 2000 or greater.

More as it happens, though I wouldn't expect too much news for a couple ofmonths as I'm not planning on a trip to Europe until July.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Jim!

Did you have a look at the length of characters to sort?

I don't know the exact translation of the english menu, but on my germanrevo I can define 'Extra' > 'Change fields' > 'Change' > 'Options' > 'Numberof characters to use by sorting fields'.

Hope that helps!

RE: Cut and paste Program

Hi All,

ExAb has both multiple clipboards (called sticky clipboards as they remainfilled when the program is closed) and a sequential clipboard function, likeCoCoPaPa, that allows you to copy several strings to the clipboard and pastthem back in the same order.

ExAb is shareware, but virtually unlimited when not registered. Please feelfree to download it from my website.

I'm sure you want to register as soon as you realize what ExAb is capable of;-)

The solution is rather well hidden. In the Data application menus, go to"Tools > Change labels". Highlight the label you sort with and tap "Edit".In the next dialog box, tap "Options". Set the number of characters to usewhen sorting.

There is a setting buried several menu levels down that governs how manycharacters are used in the sort.   The default is only 1 character - whichisn't what most of us are thinking.

Check the label options (Menu -> Tools -> Change labels -> Edit -> Options)as it looks that you're sorting on the first character only.

Dear Gilles,

<< Could anyone explain the differences between "Contacts" and the"fiches"( french version) databases >>

Contacts uses a field structure that's also used by the vCard exchangeformat as well as the majority of PC based personal information managers. This makes Contacts the better application when you exchange data with otherpeople and/or synchronise your Psion with Microsoft Outlook, LotusOrganiser, Novell GroupWise, etc.

<< How can I open my previous data by tapping the Contacts silkscreen icon ?>>

You need to transfer the information you have in the Data file to Contactsby using a tool like Pascal Nicholas' DataContacts.

<< I'm also interested in technical info about the application files (agenda, data, calc, ... ) structure for conversion purposes. Anyone knowswhere to find such information >>

The files are so-called 'stream stores' and you can get information on themby visiting the Symbian web site (www.symbian.com) and registering as adeveloper.

Dear Klaus,

It's not a question of knowing which section of the screen is used forentering numbers and characters as I was moderately familiar with Jot,having played with Pocket PC devices. My 'problems' are all down to my ownhandwriting and the shape of the characters. The lower case 'R' I'm used towrite, for example, is recognised but the way I write it is close to theshape Jot recognises as an 'H'. The same is true for the 'E' and the 'L'.When I don't think about my writing, and enter text quickly, I regularly getan 'H' rather than an 'R' at the moment. It's a question of training myselfto write the 'R' in such a way that Jot will always recognise it as such.

Subject: Re: Legalities

Dear Rick,

<< Whatever you consider to be the legal, political, or moral implications, whenever a piece of information is available to the public, it's surelypublic information... >>

I'm afraid you'll have to accept that it has everything to do with the legalsituation as the law also defines which rights of access to information thegeneral public has in the various countries around the globe. What isprivate and what is public information can be quite important and the reasonwhy it is not generally accepted that the publication of private informationby a third party turns it into public information.

<< My dismissal of that decision is that it makes no sense, not because ofany legal system.  And these differences bear little relation to what"model" it's based on ... >>

Again, it has a lot to do with the legal and political framework. AOL nowknows that it has the responsibility not to give its French subscribersaccess to US web sites selling Nazi memorabilia. Something that may not makeany sense in the light of the US legal and political framework in which anISP is considered to be neutral. The first amendment to the US constitutionmay consider blocking the access to web sites selling Nazi memorabiliaillegal as the ownership and display of such items are deemed to be part ofthe freedom of expression. Thing is that the first amendment stops at the USborder. Thing is that sale of Nazi memorabilia is prohibited in France. Andwhat the sentence by the French court has shown is that AOL is notconsidered neutral in French law.

The legal position al matter for Google. Its web spiders may automaticallycollect whatever's out there on the world wide web. What matters is thelegal position of the company with regards to what it does with thecollected data. It is not a given that the data neutrality of the webspiders make Google a neutral provider of web directory services. Google maybe neutral according the US legal and political framework but may finditself in an AOL-like situation in other countries.

<< No, legal posturing changes the real-world position not oneounce...err...gram >>

The real world position is that the Internet is not another country withit's own constitution and legal framework. Nor can it be said that the USorigin of much of the Internet's technology automatically means that US lawapplies. If that were true it can be stated that the World Wide Web iscovered by EC law as the web comes out of CERN, an EC institution.

<< Maybe so, I can't really speak for the sensitivities of the French.  ButI would see it as akin to "Limey" (as some of our "Yank" friends still callus) or "Pom" (as some of our "Kiwi" friends call us) >>

There's always a reason why such names are used and it tends to be at theexpense of the group that's being addressed. You can be quite sure that, forexample, the use of 'Yankee politics' implies a (very) negative anddismissive judgement of the US people rather the political standpoints ofthe (then current) US administration.

Not a bug, as it's working correctly.

You need to go into 'Tools | Change Labels'. Then select the field used forthe sort and select 'Edit'.  Select 'Options' and change the number ofcharacters from 1 to say 10, depending on the max. length of the field.  Iwould expect the sort time to increase.

I've renamed fields, but still find that it's not a suitable upgrade for acontacts db in Data, as it's not as capable as Data.

Contacts' link with Email is it's only advantage, so what is needed is asynchronise app to synchronise a Data file and Contacts.

Reply to Jim Watson-Gove:  the reason your Data file isn't getting sortedproperly is probably because you haven't used the option to change thenumber of characters used when sorting.

If you open the Help file and select 'Sorting entries (Data)' you'll see thefollowing instruction:

'To change the number of characters of a 'Text' or 'Memo' label used forsorting, select Change labels from the Tools menu, select the label tochange and press Edit. Then press Options.'   After doing this you'll seethe option to select the 'No. of characters to use when sorting theentries'.   You could enter 10 or even 20 here - that should ensure yoursorted list appears the way you want it.
