Subject: Psion Travelmodem
Hi,
I am packed and going on holiday tomorrow. The fun is party spoiled by my Travelmodem, which doesn't work, after a rest of 14 days, when last used. The Psion dealer in Singapore doesn't want to look at it and offers me a new one for $ 200. (A rather high price for obsolete goods!)
Can anybody advice me what might be the problem. How to open the modem (screwdriver between the two halfs ??) Is this modem repairable in general? The power light works and when my Psion dials, the data light blinks. Only the usual weak ringing sounds I don't hear and I get the message: "Can not connect with server, timed out". (NB.Settings, cables and telephone lines checked and OK)
Your help is very much appreciated, regards,
Bernard Olij

Subject: Psion Wap Browser & GPRS
Hi
I am connecting my Psion 5mx to my T39
phone and able to access the Internet over a GPRS connection - Email & Web work
fine on the Psion, however I cannot make the
Wap browser that I also have installed work.
A connection is established, but I get the error message "unable to connect to gateway".
(Needless to say, the Gateway settings are
the same as on my T39 and I have
previously been able to establish a
GSM Wap session using the browser!)
Any ideas why this should be the
case anyone?
Cheers,
Tim Thurston

Arent,
EPOC DIGEST V1 # 237 (3) : Serial Port Tranfer rates ( 4Rolf )
<< 460800 BPS is a standard rate for RS-232 ports with recent UARTS ... >>
That recent UARTs allow such a speed doesn't mean it is in accordance with the EIA-232 standard. I can, for example, use an EIA-232 connection over a longer distance than the standard allows for by carefully selecting the cable between the two devices. Whe I do so it's no longer EIA-232.
Secondly, please don't confuse EIA-232 with such standards as V.32, GSM and HSCSD as they're dealing with totally different aspects of data communication. V.32 is a modem standard rather than a serial interface standard. GSM and HSCSD deal with the 'air interface' between the mobile terminal and network base station. They're independent of the interface between mobile terminal and (handheld) computer. You can have a 300 bps or 115,200 bps connection between the two while the air interface uses a 14,400 bps link. Finally, follow the standard and it's bps rather than BPS according ISO as a capital b stands for byte and a small b for bit plus that seconds are abbreviated as a small s.

Dear John,
<< It has just about all the Psion to Garmin GPS software there is ... plus Compactor, RMR Zip, MBM View, Street and Route from Palmtop, and lots of other software installed on 64 MB card >>
Please not that the overall majority of software licenses don't allow you to transfer the license/registration to a third party. This means that you can sell the Series 5mx complete with (say) RMRZip and MBMView but in their unregistered state.

Dear Thomas,
<< I am sorry, but I think I miss the link between a Psion and the Dilbert of 29/4. However, I liked the Dilbert of 27/4 that explains to us how exactly Psion got us to form self-help groups such as this Digest. >>
Note that Dilbert cartoons (and others) aren't published synchronously. The cartoon in my newspaper of 29/4 can be different from the one in the publication you read. You'd have to ask the Digest duty editor to send 'your' cartoon of 27/4 as an attachment to the Digest to ensure that other subscribers know what you're aiming at.

Dear Kevin,
<< I'm now thinking of possibly getting a P800 myself (especially as Rolf seems to be getting on quite well now with the handwriting recognition) but I've always been put off in the past by anything with no keyboard >>
I wouldn't use the words "quite well" because my error rate on the P800 is much higher than on the Series 5mx or on the Series 7. The handwriting recognition is acceptable for the short entries (an appointment - a to-do) I make on the P800. It wouldn't do for longer texts.
To illustrate this, below the same paragraph as above but written on the P800 - straight from the stylus without any corrections - and beamed over to the Series 7 on which I write this reply.
I wouldn|t vfe the words "quite well" becouse my error rate onthe P800 us mwch higheh than on the Series 5ml or on the Feries 7. The handwriting recognitlon ifaccepoable for the short entries (an appointment - a to-do) I mak e on the P800. Io wouldn|t do for longer texds.
I trust this underlines that coming to grips with the P800's handwriting recognition may demand quite a bit of effort, depending on how clean and clear your normal pen-and-paper handwriting is.
<< 1 Is it possible to keep say 8 to 10 apps open at once without continually hitting "out of memory" messages (not possible on the 9210 unfortunately)? >>
I haven't encountered an out-of-memory message yet. First, because I don't have that much data stored in internal memory. Secondly, because it seems that the P800 shuts down applications that haven't been used for some time. The P800 is fast enough to load applications quickly.
<< 2 How good is the quality of the speakerphone (it's very good on the 9210)? >>
Haven't used it because I've yet to make notes or look up some item during a phone call.
<< 3 Does opening the Web browser automatically close all other open apps (as on the 9210) to give as much RAM as possible available for web browsing? >>
Not that I know. Though I suspect it may do so when memory is scarce.
<< 4 Can you use the mp3 player and carry out other operations simultaneously (as you can do on the 9210)? >>
You can, except when making a phone call.

Subject: Infrared on 5MX frozen "Off"
Using PhoneMan Pro I was sending an email to my 5MX when the 5MX was re-set.
Infrared can't now be re-activated by any means, even a soft re-set.
Is a hard re-set the answer?

Might I suggest a cheap smallish CF card and a USB CF reader? shouldn't cost too much and you'll always be able to back up essential files.
> Has anyone tried to reduce a digital photo size with a Psion?
nConvert does this. Use it all the time. Great JPEG quality and compression. However unlike MBMView it doesn't show you what its doing so youll still need MBMView or web to look at the picture and check it's come out OK. Oh and a hint - if you resize and rotate in one operation, the "lock Ratios" feature locks the size ratios before rotating so you can easily end up with a rather distorted picture! Just note the width and height and enter them manually with "lock ratios" unchecked. Remember modifying and saving a JPEG more than once will degrade the picture quality...

OPXscan is Ralph Sprenger's free utility which identifies orphaned opx-s and can delete them. Find it here:

Answer to: Greg Crayford
Re.: Problems with switching on - First of all "by hook and by crook" get yourself a back-up. Buy a CF card (16 Mb is enough and very cheap nowadays) and back up to the D disk. Just do it ! NOW ! Your problem is either software related in which case a soft reset might well work, or hardware related in which case it will need a service. Did you install a new program recently ? Does it do this also when no app's are open at all ?
Answer to: MichaelSFryer
Re. GPRS - Look at the website http://www.mikemcc.net/ for all the necessary details.

Re. Sheet on 7/Netbook - No multiple sheets in the EPOC sheet program.
Answer to: gianluca gallino
Re: bcc field - Ah, yes, that is a bug in the EPOC email program that we - the digest Team - also struggle with lately. Compuserve appears still to allow the BCC's to be hidden with EPOC mail, and there are a few others, Michael uses one in Denmark. But in general you will not succeed. The only way to find out is trial and error. Sorry.
Re. Dictionaries - Do Ctrl-Tab in the system screen and look under the folder DATA for a file that looks like Lexicon.rsc and lens9522.dat (the English file).

When I had the OS1.56 as in S7, I reprogrammed the Web app silk key for Opera.
1. Global find
2. External VGA switch on/off/frame rate
3. Lexicon (changes the language in spellchecker/thesaurus)
4. Backup (I highly recommend it for everyone, just a light touch and saves you a lot of hard troubles)
