Dear Subscribers,

as you know, we still have problems with CompuServe, which lead to a big amount of returned, not sent mails.

I fear that those problems are the result of measures for Compuserve's preparation to the takeover by AOL Europe Services SARL, Luxemburg (at least the German CS division).

Yesterday we got about 200 returned mails. Therefore I decided to resend the whole digest # 246 part 4. But later I stated, that it contains addresses, already getting the digest.

Please accept my apologies for sending the digest twice.

Hi All

Some poor soul said: -

For those that don't know, Outlook has an Inbox Repair Tool. Look for scanpst.exe on your PC. Close down Outlook first and then run the file. This will attempt to salvage your pst file. It is not a bad tool at all because if it can't repair the file completely it will get back as much as it can, but may take a long time. Even so an occasional backup of your pst wont hurt.

Am trying to get this to work with my netBook and the PCMCIA card pod but keep failing with "No Carrier"

Does anyone have the correct settings for this cardphone?

Subject: One More S7

Dear Friends,

My trusty S7 hit the trash heap last week after I was unable to get it repaired.  As my fellow Psionistas in the US may know, Tecklogix is no longer servicing Psion products.  Our good friend Shiva Naipul at Palmtop Support in Toronto proved very helpful by agreeing to look at the unit even though they don"t handle S7's, in order to track down someone who could handle the repair.

It was, as I feared, a repeat of the motherboard problem Techlogix had handled twice before, he got in touch with them and it was then they informed him the reason they'd not returned my calls was they"d shut down repair operations (otherwise they'd be happy to repair the unit for

free...again).

So I needed a motherboard, he was unable to procure one from the UK, and the cost would be prohibitive at any rate, but France would be the next port of call if I insisted.  I'd told him at the beginning if the cost of repair got to be too pricey, I'd consider replacing the unit, so he offered to look about for another unit.  Perhaps thirty minutes passed, the phone rings and he's telling me he's located the last new retail unit on line, no discounts or haggling; and gave me the phone number.  Needless to say Mr. Naipul gets top marks in customer service from me.

It was a dicey decision, a few more hundred dollars and I could have bought a netbook (or yes, something windoze oriented, but not yet ok?) but I only had a s7 budget and not much time before leaving for Chicago for a family crisis.

It turned out to be a display model and the best I could do was bring the price down from $899 to 870.  But when it was delivered I got a surprise.

Instead of 16MG RAM, it has 48.  Took a while for that to register, but it would make sense for a floor model if you wanted to display multiple functions and display webpages, would never do to run out of memory!  And it has a much better power connection than my first s7 came with, very nice.

Now I just need to send in the 5mx and get that pesky power connection taken care of.  You should see the ridiculously intricate perfectly balanced

wrapping of postal tape I've attached to the jack. Even with cardboard in the backup battery slot, a slight movement of the top cover causes loss of connection; I think there's a short somewhere.  Shiva mentioned that the cable could deteriorating; he would check it and do the needful.

Will be visiting the archives soon ISO more software to make this a better standalone computer.

Best...

Hi People,

Here's my $0.02 on the selectable silk screen applications subject:

1 RealMaps

2 PGP

3 PhoneMan

4 iContacts

As with other users, though, these are by no means my most utilised programs.

They would have to be:

1 RMRZip

2 Symbian Text Editor

3 newTELnet

4 FileSwitch

There are still other programs that are just THERE - part of the

infrastructure if you will....

1 Locker

2 ChaDis7

3 pIBeam

4 MBMView

I think I've bored you all enough now, but I'm sure that you've got the

general idea that I would be completely lost without my netBook.

Subject: Psion 5... a reminiscence & question

I look fondly on my Psion 5. Bought when first emerged in October 1997 - the successor to a beautifully designed Psion 3A. Throughout that time this list, probably the only one supporting a piece of equipment long out of manufacture, has supported and cajoled me to use every feature of a Psion 5.

I am not normally sentimental about equipment. I work in the recording and music industry with vastly expensive equipment on several platforms that goes out of date - or requires a major shift in operation technique - every year or so.

I should imagine that almost every part that moves on my Psion 5 has been replaced. POS in London is an interesting company, started by a someone who left Psion to set up a business devoted to maintaining Psion machines and their data. Now it provides the practical solution to keeping a dinosaur going. In the last calendar year I have returned my Psion 5 3 times - each time due to a fault connected with the cable - lines on the display - not switching on - cannot select icons. Each occasion costs around £75.

I am faced with a conundrum. If this were a Mac, PC, sampler, MIDI keyboard, synthesizer, digital audio workstation, SMPTE interface, digital audio converter... I would have made an assessment of alternatives and moved on.

But there is nothing to move onto! A keyboard is such a simple inputting device - and essential for me. The only option available weighs the same amount as a notebook PC and runs clunky software.

I know this question arises here from time to time - please indulge me with your collective latest thoughts on real alternatives to Psion 5.

Thank you

Ian

Subject: Extrabars on Series 7, netbook

In regards Kevin's comments re subject.

Extrabars appears to always capture the *eighth* application button. It's documentation states that it's only been tested on an original Series 5, and it shows.

I've also just noticed that Jason Kneen's website isn't up (at least up to a minute or two ago for me). The last time I checked it hadn't even been updated for about two or three *years*.

Going from comments I'd read on his website, I suspect that in the past a computing disaster lead to the loss of all sourcecode to Extrabars. I haven't contacted the author, as it seems like a hopeless cause.

In any case it can be fixed! Download HexEditor from Neuon, then patch ExtraBars.app by changing the byte at hex offset 6533 from 58 to 5A. Works on my netbook :-)

I have had similar crashes, but only with spam messages and normally those that have HTML coding in the actual message text rather than as an attachment. In a couple of cases I could delete the message without downloading and all would be OK, but in other cases just receiving the header would crash Email and I had to resort to a web based reader or a desperate e-mail to a friend with web access to remove the offending item before I could get my e-mails with the Psion. Thankfully, it hasn't happened for quite a while now. (famous last words...?)

I've also experienced the opposite, e-mails that were blocking a friend's WindoZe e-mail program and which I was able to delete from the server using EPOC Email.

One example was when my friend Per's 13 year old son had used the broadband connected computers at Per's university to collect 20 megabytes of photographs and then e-mailed them to his Dad! As soon as Per logged on to get his e-mails, the damned thing started downloading that 20mb e-mail and the only way out was to cancel. I put Per's POP3 server details into EPOC Email, deleted the offending item and Per was in business again. (I didn't attemt to download it to the Psion...)

The problem is probably that the e-mail uses some HTML coding or other stuff that is not standard to e-mails.

Very annoyingly, the only HTML coded e-mails I've ever received where there has been any attempt at using the available document formatting options offered by HTML have been spams from porn sites and the like. In 99% of the HTML e-mails I receive there is no other reason for them being in HTML format than the fact that Bill Gates has decided on behalf of the world that e-mails should be in HTML. This usually means that I have to pay twice to receive each e-mail. First for the e-mail text and then for the HTML attachment. This becomes rather annoying when GSM is the only way to receive e-mails and you're on a limited budget.

Subject: Dodgy PSU socket on 5mx

Hi,

Keith Clarke's PSU problem is solved by using the POD docking station which uses the Honda connector to supply the voltage (mine came from Proporta). It is probably cheaper than getting the 5mx fixed and you get a dandy pointer-holder too!

Happy days,

Phil.

You have three choices:

* Attempt to fix it yourself. It may just need resoldering, but in some cases the actuall connector is broken and I wouldn't know where to get a replacement.

* Send it in for repair.

* Buy a POD docking station which comes with a cable that connects the power via the RS-232. The cable can be detached from the docking station and used seperately. It works fine just for connecting the power supply without a PC hooked up to the other end.

PS. I've asked before, but didn't get a reply. Does anyone know where I could buy just a cable like the one that comes with the POD docking station? I asked POD a couple of years ago, but they replied that the cable was the most expensive part of the assembly and they weren't interested in selling it as a seperate item.

I've noticed that with age, all my Psions get a matted vertical area where the scrollbar appears on the right of the screen. I suppose that is where I mostly click. The only styluses (styli?) I've ever used are the original Psion ones or my fingernails.

I do have a copy of Allegro around somewhere (I even have the original box), but my reaction after playing with it for a while was "what's the point"? All the Psions have excellent keyboards, and there is no way you're going to be as quick in Allegro as on a keyboard.
